Your body needs water and sleep to lose weight. Without those 2 things it doesn’t want to do the work of releasing weight - or much of anything else for that matter! I know that you have tried lots of ways to lose weight, you’ve eaten certain types of foods, you’ve carried your water bottle around with you, you’ve drank water to fill your stomach up… This is different. I want you drink you water out of caring for your body. I want you to get in bed an hour earlier because you’re being kind to you. Because if you want beautiful results you better put in attractive effort! Your body doesn’t lose weight or keep it off because you punished yourself there. It stays where it is COMFORTABLE. These 2 things - drinking water and sleeping create COMFORT for your body. They also help you repair, rejuvenate, clear brain fog, tidy up your systems, do the work of detoxing your brain and body - there aren’t many things that water and sleep don’t improve and improve at a pretty amazing return! So, before you take anything out of your diet, or go to the gym like a mad woman, or buy any more supplements or powders or start counting anything - please drink some water and get some sleep. Consistently. So, to reiterate - if you want your body to do the hard work of burning the excess fat you’re lugging around, do it a solid and drink plenty of water and give it good quality rest. Episode 23: The #1 Way your Brain Keeps you from Losing Weight

Your brain is very efficient. It creates habits to keep you headed in THE SAME direction. It is a fabulous thing that our brains do for us AND when we want to make change we have to acknowledge it or we’ll be stuck, and likely frustrated. I had an Ah-Ha! Moment this week where I caught onto some wording I was using that was not serving me. Side Note: Language - the words we use, are super important. I’ll do an episode on that soon… What came up or me is just the basic difference in definition between RATIONAL and RATIONALIZING. Check this out: Rational: based on or in accordance with reason or logic Rationalizing: attempt to explain or justify (one's own or another's behavior or attitude) with logical, plausible reasons, even if these are not true or appropriate. Did you catch that?! Rational means it is in line with reason or logic. Rationalizing means we are trying to justify what we’re up to! That Felt like and Ah Ha! To me because I have a very, very, very rational brain - I always have - it works well for me. It helps me out! I am cool under pressure, the number one word people use to describe me is “calm” - so I get “rational” in my bones! What I have to watch out for is when that same sounding voice in my head starts RATIONALIZING. See what I mean! So, in weight loss this could look like your perfectly laid out plan for today, that you made yesterday that took into account your schedule, your leftovers, your time, etc. It’s a beautiful plan, thoughtfully made, that gets you closer to the results you want… Then - today - you hear the thought: It’s just one. Or… If I would have known they were bringing that, I would have planned for it. Or… I never get to have these. Or… I have been doing so well. Or… I just won’t eat _____ later… I know you’ve had at least one - maybe all - of those thoughts before! I know I sure have! So, when you go into changing your habit around eating, when you start planning for the first time (or the 50th time), when you try to do anything in the pursuit of “different.” Your brain will try and get you to stay the same. Not because it doesn’t love you, because it does! Just because it’s trying to save you energy so you can survive. That lizard part of your brain just wants to keep you alive. Nothing has gone wrong! So, next time you notice that you’re rationalizing over being just plain rational I want you to remember that it’s completely normal. AND STICK TO YOUR PLAN! Normalizing this will change everything. It takes the sting out of it. Sometimes these things crop up in our minds and we make it mean we’re bad people, or we’ll never make it work, or that it’s too hard. None of that is true - the only that’s true is that IT WILL HAPPEN. Your choice, is what do you do with it? You want to develop this habit, the habit of seeing your brain try to rationalize and just chuckling at it. Not in the mean point and laugh kind of way, but in the “Oh, bless your heart.” kind of way! Of course you want me to eat the cookie! You poor dear, you think the cookie will save me - it won't. Episode 21: Losing Weight Isn't the Hard Part
www.caryngillen.com Losing the weight isn’t hard, that part is super easy when you have the right tools, and you get your body pointed in the right direction. What’s hard, what feels terrible, is thinking about having to lose weight!! Think about it. You’re asking your brain to change operating systems from being a weight gaining or weight maintaining creature - to a weight losing creature. Your body can certainly do it. You just have to get your brain on board. Once you do that - there are a thousand ways to do it! I need you to know this because your body can absolutely do it. In fact, it wants to work FOR you. It just needs some help. I’m not saying this to be disrespectful of the struggle that has brought you to today. I do not discount your attempts and your desire. The problem is, if we give all the failed attempts too much credit then they get in the way of you actually having what you want! Where you’re going - all that past “proof” does not serve you. Who would you be if you made choices in support of your body instead of against it? What would be different if you cared for you body with food? If you knew weight loss was 100% guaranteed and would arrive on July 1st fully wrapped with a pretty bow - what would you do with your time and energy between now and then? Think about it? If your focus truly shifted to the brain of the person who had done it instead of focusing on being the person who can’t do it -- what would you be thinking about? Doing? Eating? Making the shift from living as the person who fails at this and struggles -- to being the person who has done it and lives it everyday is the work. That’s all I do with my clients. We spend about month getting all the food dialed in and all those food questions answered - then we go to work on becoming the person who has it done. When you walk in the world as the woman without the struggle - then you have freedom - no matter what the scale says. Then, you get to have the peace, the relief, the confidence all the way to your goal weight. You don’t have to wait to feel the benefits!! Okay, so you’re job is to consider who you’d be at goal weight that is different than who you are right now. What does she think about? What are her concerns? Episode 20: "I already know what to do."
I know that you you already know what to do. We all do. We all know how to save for retirement. We don’t all do it. We all know how to clean our houses on a pretty monthly schedule that we can print out from Pinterest. We don’t all do it. We all know we should be meditating and stretching - we likely even know how or have the resources to pick up the amazing and FREE habits. And yet - we don’t do it. KNOWING IS NOT THE SAME AS DOING. Did that one get you in the gut? Because it did me! I wish that I actually did every single best practice that I “know” how to do - but I don’t. If you’re a human, you don’t either! I’m going to give you the credit that the thought “I already know what to do.” is correct - but that’s it. That’s as much as it gets you - you get to be right. Here’s the deal, gang: The place where change happens is transferring the knowing to the doing. Until you take the action. You’ve got nothing. When you take action on what you know, when you step into the arena, THEN - and only then - will you learn what we need to. To actually take an idea and turn it into a habit that creates the life you want. I’m calling you out a bit today. Asking you to put your stake in the ground here. Step 1: Define your thing. Do yourself the favor of owning what it is you want. So when you say “I already know what to do.” What comes to mind? Is it to wake up 15 minutes early each morning so you can do that daily yoga practice that makes you feel amazing for the rest of the day? Is it to implement the saving strategy you know will get you the wealthy life you’ve always dreamed of? Is it to finally end the struggle with food and your body? Pick your one thing. Right now. Pick your thing and say it outloud. You got it? … Envision me air high fiving you right now! Now that you have that one thing - that’s it. That is your thing to focus on, commit to, and to do until it is yours. Go after it like it’s your job. Make it a priority. Not one of the priorities - but THE priority. Notice that last sentence “That is your thing to focus on, commit to, and to DO until it is yours.” I didn’t say “.. and KNOW until it is yours.” Knowing isn’t worth anything. Knowing is the quick blanket of feel better we layer over a problem. Doing is taking the problem between your hands, looking it in the eye, and telling it that times are changing in a way it actually believes you. I want you to make your problem nervous. Step two: Gather your resources, thoughts, and ideas. Make a long list of all the things you “know” you can try. Decide where you’re going to start and get to work. Don’t wait until January 1st. Your problem is counting on you to do that - you need to start today. Pick one thing off that list and start there. Do it until it’s who you are and then pick the next thing. Step three: Keep going. Let’s recap: KNOWING IS NOT THE SAME AS DOING. To learn, to change, to grow ----- that all happens by DOING. So, use your knowing to put together your list of actions you can take. Then just do whatever you can in any way you can to stay in “DOING” mode. Get momentum on your side, go after your one thing until it’s inevitable. Episode 19: Happy 4th of July! Yeah, you read that right ;)
http://www.caryngillen.com/schedule/ I have a weight loss coaching group that takes everything we talk about on the podcast to a deeper level and I’m enrolling for the new year right now. You might be thinking this all sounds great - but you have a real life! I hear you, and so do all the women in the group who are doing it! They are amazing but they aren’t super heros. They are people just like you and me who decided to make this a priority right now. What you need to do right now is consider where you want to be on the 4th of July. That is what is on the table. See, what we do is get all excited about goals - especially this time of year! We set resolutions and we get excited and we believe it’s possible! Then by Valentine’s day we’re done. We didn’t make it. We quit on ourselves. So I want you to think about what you typically do on the Fourth of July. Where are you? Who are you with? What are you feeling? What are you doing? What are you not doing? Now. I want you to do this again - but I’m going to share where you could be - the option that is available if you choose to join us for 6 months of coaching and weight loss. You’re at your usual spot. You’re around people who love you - but you’re starting to notice that things are different. The people who usually annoy you don’t take up so much space in your mind. You’re feeling calm. Confident, even. You notice that you’re surrounded by the chaos that can sometimes come with this holiday - but you’re gently smiling. You don’t feel overfull from the constant bites and grabs of food you usually eat all throughout the day. You know exactly what you’re going to eat because you planned for your favorite and you’re going to enjoy every bite. You’re a part of the group and you’re okay. You aren’t comparing yourself to every other person there. You’re not feeling anxious or needing to eat and drink just to be comfortable. You ARE comfortable. You’re not hiding. You’re interacting. If people are swimming and it’s hot - you might actually get in and you will for sure have fun. Now that you’ve considered it. How do you feel? Do you notice your body leaning in? Do you feel curiosity? Or maybe you feel disbelief, maybe you’re even feeling cynical. They are all options! You choose how you feel by the thoughts you have. I’m asking you to create a feeling of curiosity. I’m asking you to think “Maybe it could happen for me.” I know it is a great big ask - so I’m going to tell you my super secret feminist backstory… I know in my bones that when we, as women, do the work of taking our brains and our energy back from this struggle - from diet mentality, from caring about how we look compared to others, from the scale telling us if we can feel good or bad that day - then we can change the world. Think about it. When you end the struggle with food and your weight - what comes next?! The possibilities are endless, and I also happen to believe that choosing to end the struggle, choosing to do this work will set you up with tools you can use for the rest of your life to do anything you want. Anything. So the question for me isn’t, is it possible -- because I know it is. I’ve seen it so many times. Episode 17: What can you do instead?
After the last episode you’re likely wondering - what DO I do? I’m so glad you asked! There is another way - and it requires that you drop the struggle, believe that you can do it, and that you show up for yourself in a bigger way than you ever have for any diet. You need to know that this is possible, not just for me or my other clients, but for you too. You see, what the diet industry has also done to all of us is make us very suspicious that anything will work. We are guarded and fearful. They stole our hope - and I think that is so crappy of them! I see powerful, strong, capable women who can clearly move mountains in all other areas of their lives, but they think they can’t do it here. They actually, maybe you even, actually believe that you can’t do it. It’s just not true and it is costing us all a lot: Time with our kids Getting up and down on the floor with grandkids Having energy after work to cook food we actually enjoy and want to feed our families Confidence walking into any room Wearing the clothes we want to wear Sex with your partner You name it - women are missing out on it! Episode 16: You didn't get an F, THEY got an F!
You haven’t failed diets. Diets have failed you. And then they’ve blamed you for being bad or wrong... You’re not broken. You don’t need “Fixing” You’re okay, and you’ve always been okay. You’re also likely taking more responsibility than is appropriate given the failure of the diet and health industries failure to support us on this one. What you need to do is drop what you believe about losing weight: Calories in - Calories out is not how fat loss works. Exercise is not a great weight loss tool. 6 small meals a day keep your metabolism revved up Failure to quit following the old rules will get you the same results! If you’re listening to this you want different results and you can have them - but you have to be willing to get rid of the old ways. Okay, to sum it up - we were all fed misinformation for years. That information was supposed to help us lose weight - but it actually made us gain weight. You have to drop the old diet mentality and tools in order to allow your body to release the weight and get on with your life. More on THAT tomorrow. You’re doing the best that you can. You need to know this because you are likely the hardest person on you. I want you to repeat it to yourself, see if you believe it. If you don’t, try I’m considering the possibility that I’m doing the best that I can. If that is too hard to believe then try, It’s possible that people are doing the best that they can. You need to do this because the atmosphere in your brain matters. You matter. How you feel about you matters. Self imposed stress is unnecessarily hard on you - and there are enough challenges. Okay, so here it is one more time. You are doing the best that you can. How do we know? Because it’s what you are doing. Really try it on, for the rest of today, or the rest of this week - consider the possibility that it’s true. I’m doing the best that I can. You’re doing the best that you can.
