34 – Working on You
Now that we are into the second half of the year, how is it going for YOU? How is it going as you work on you?New Year's Resolutions are now more than six months old. Many of yours may been broken in just a few short weeks. Others, a couple of months. The desire, the fire, is just gone. But the ones that really mean something are probably still being worked on today. If you're in that place, your emotional intelligence can maybe either reignite you or may potentially just keep you going.Hurdles you may be running up against are when we self-judge ourselves, or even judge others. Judgment decision are not only easy, but they are quick. And that's dangerous because when that happens, you're operating on very, very limited information. And this is where we should let our curiosity take over. Ask questions, be informed, and understand why you shouldn't come to judge yourself, or others, too quickly. That opens up more choices, more options. It gives you the ability to leverage one of the competencies of empathy. As Eric likes to put it,"It's intellectually lazy to be judgmental."Curiosity says you care enough and you want to do the work of understanding what's going on. And that work might take you someplace uncomfortable. You might have to do some self-examination.The power of curiosity goes hand-in-hand with self-empathy. It gives you that ability to say "I'm not a failure."Self-examination, self exploration, can help you to start thinking of consequences and thinking through consequential thinking. So that you continue down the same path, the consequences are going to be the same. So what do you have to do to make those consequences come out the way you want?In each episode, Jeff and Eric will talk about what emotional intelligence, or understanding your emotions, can do for you in your daily and work life. 33 – The Future of Work with Special Guest Holly Custard, PhD
Holly Custard is deputy director of institute partnerships and outreach at the Strada Institute for the Future of Work, where she engages with stakeholders to raise awareness and inspire action through the Institute’s research and insights. Her work focuses on fostering the development of infrastructure that supports robust, connected and purposeful learning and career outcomes. In this episode, we talk with Holly about the future of what work might look like for us post pandemic. She covers a variety of areas that, as we exit the pandemic, should be incorporated into our workplace.A system should be designed that helps us transition into new jobs or careers. She outlines 5 areas that should be focused on.The big question is, will corporate embrace this change? Education vs skills is at the core of this conversation. Unpack what are the jobs, and what are the skills needed. Communicate what is needed from both the educational experience and skills needed, and how this can be a better result for both the employer and employee. How does EQ work into this, the hiring process, especially skills? Are we now entering a unique opportunity, to shape the future? What have what we need to implement these concepts, but it will take all of us to recognize them, and work together.Remember the term "working learner." How do we put that person at the center of all we do. We have to start to understand what is going on with employees in a structural, systematic way (EMPATHY!).And as the employee, without self-awareness of your personal history, it is difficult to move forward with a new career or job path.In each episode, Jeff and Eric will talk about what emotional intelligence, or understanding your emotions, can do for you in your daily and work life. We had the opportunity to speak with Dan DeLucia, Pitching Coach for The Ohio State University Buckeyes Baseball team. How do 18 or 19-year old young men, just out of high school, handle the pressures of playing sports and college life? How does EQ come into play when coaches help them adjust? Coach DeLucia gives us his insight on how difficult this time can be, and how he and fellow coaches go beyond the game, and make it about the person first, then the ball player.Dan is currently in his seventh year as an assistant for the Buckeyes, and has been a part of the Buckeye coaching staff that guided the team to three NCAA Regional appearances in the last four years as well as two Big Ten Tournament titles. He helped guide the youngest pitching staff in the nation to a postseason title run as the OSU arms shattered the school record for strikeouts in a season (583). D-1 College Athlete and EQ – Preview
In our next episode, we had the opportunity to speak with Dan DeLucia, Pitching Coach for The Ohio State University Buckeyes Baseball team. How do 18 or 19-year old young men, just out of high school, handle the pressures of playing sports and college life. How does EQ come into play when coaches help them adjust? Here's a preview of what Coach DeLucia had to say..."A lot of it, when they come, in is mental. And it's that finding what their drivers are. We'll have weekly pitchers' meetings where we're not talking baseball, we're talking more than that.A friend of mine brought this to my attention a year or two ago, this concept of MVP.Mission. Vision. Purpose.I use that with our guys and I've done it personally. I would encourage people to do it personally. To figure out, outside of baseball, why do you wake up every day? What are you doing internally that influences those choices that we're talking about? We'll sit down and go through pitchers' meetings and just talk about them as people. So when they're up on the mound, like you said, like Mariano Rivera is up on the mound in front of 50,000 people in the stands, and millions on TV in game seven of the World Series. How is he able to throw that cutter ball and not worry about what's going to happen?Clearly the best in the game have some physical attributes that a lot of people can't replicate, but internally, they're so secure with who they are, and that no matter what happens, good or bad, they're still going to be the same person when they get out of bed the next day.So it's the those measures that we really try to instill into our guys. Who are you? Know yourself in and out really, really well."In each episode, Jeff and Eric will talk about what emotional intelligence, or understanding your emotions, can do for you in your daily and work life.
