Unity in Worship with Nathan Wilbur
Singing and worship aren’t the first things that come to mind when we hear the phrase, Life Skills. But decades ago, communal worship and song were key parts of the Culture. Pastor Nathan Wilbur of Wilbur Ministries shares with us the benefits of family worship in his home growing up. Worshipping as a family forces us to think through our priorities; it invites God into our homes and brings to the family together over something wholesome. A regular worship time as a family helps us think through the roles God has given us, and makes it easier to come to terms with them If you are worried about time, simply set aside ten minutes on the weekend. If you would like to go longer but can’t, pray for more time. Feel bashful about singing aloud? Don’t worry about it; if your or a family member’s voice sounds like a football stuck in a tuba, it doesn’t matter. The point is worshiping God and connecting as a family Reclaim the culture of song; fifty years ago, the quality of voices didn’t matter, they just made more memories Parents delight in the voice of their children, why wouldn’t God delight in ours? This may have the side effect of churning up buried issues; good. That is God digging up the skeletons so all parties can have cleaner, more honest relationships. This will be a discipline, it will be hard and awkward at first, but stick with it; its long term benefits are worth it. Maintain an attitude of gratitude for what God has given us. The Wilbur family are Believing Jews who have led millions in worship across the globe. From testimonies to song, they are always ready to glorify God with the voices He gave them: https://www.wilburministries.com/ Check out their new Album; Selah https://www.wilburministries.com/product/selah-cd/ Resources from True North: Christian Psychology https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/?s=psych Book Club https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/?s=book+club Speech Club https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/product/debate/ Middle Schoolers Writing Club https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/product/middle-school-writing-club/ U.S. Lit and Comp https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/product/u-s-literature-and-composition-2/ U.S. History through film https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/product/modern-american-history/ Check out the True North Tribe Facebook page! Writing and Education in Crazy times with Andrew Pudewa of Institute for Excellence in Writing
While Writing isn’t exactly a soft skill, it is an invaluable hard skill that makes a feed back loop with the soft skills. Andrew Pudewa of IEW fame offers several tips to encourage this skill in crazy times. The top two things needed for your kids are; Language Skills (liberal arts), and Math skills (Logic/Stem/Arithmetic) Choose what is interesting, but also needed. Teach your kids how to memorize Especially poetry, this will teach them diction, and heavily ingrain a love for language and reading, which in turn will give them a love for learning. The 4 deadly errors of teaching writing: Over correction With holding help- if your child asks for it when writing, they probably need it. Unclear Assignments- Your child cannot follow instructions they don’t understand. Be clear. Over expectation- set a high bar, but be willing to give grace for learners. Resources from IEW https://iew.com/ TWSS Language Acquisition Through Poetry Themed Based Writing Books Ancient History Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales People and Places All things fun and fascination With all of the resources in the world of homeschooling today, you can get the best of both worlds of Public School and Homeschool True North Resources https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/product-category/english/ British Literature ‘Dinner with Shakespeare and Dickens’ Literature through the movies Writing Club The post Writing and Education in Crazy times with Andrew Pudewa of Institute for Excellence in Writing appeared first on Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

The Power of Notebooking with Cindy Rushton
Join Lisa Nehring and this week’s special guest, Cindy Rushton, and they discuss the power of notebooking! Here are some notes from the podcast: Note-booking: A storage container for new ideas or thoughts you want to remember. “… The way for writers who love to write, to write what they love about or what they love to learn” Notebooks document what you have studied. It allows you to interact with the material in a unique way. Lapbooks; a smaller, portable version that fits inside the larger notebook Notebooks allow the child to get their thoughts on a subject down, then read them when most needed later in life. An example would be Cindy’s son Matt; after a hard deployment in Afghanistan, he found a quote in his childhood notebook: “…My religious belief teaches me to feel as sage in battle as in Bed. God has fixed the time of my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. Captain, that is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.” -Stonewall Jackson The Notebooks help our children be ready for life: Matt Rushton is currently developing new ideas based off what is written in his notebook Helps with Learning as a lifestyle, as it is to hold what interests its owner. This will carry with us no matter where we go. Cindy’s books: Language Arts the Easy Way Notebooking Ministering to the Heart of Your Child http://cindyrushton.com/ Fifty percent off with code: tnha True North now offers a membership site: https://truenorthhomeschoolacademy.com/true-north-membership/ Including clubs like ‘Science through Marvel’, ‘Minecraft’ Equipping tools; Academic Advising, Special Needs help, and other online workshops The post The Power of Notebooking with Cindy Rushton appeared first on Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Communicating with our Kids about Internet Pornography with Hal and Melanie Young
4 ways Porn causes problems: Negative impact on couples/gender relations Leads men and women to devalue each other. Dominated by hostile sexism, frequent violence, gender dominations and object function Because Porn floods the brain with dopamine, it shorts circuits other systems. Porn becomes addictive, and undermines attachment, intimacy and the ability to relate. The more frequent the porn use the lower sexual satisfaction Porn as ‘instinctive’ is inaccurate and leads to low quality sex. Loneliness-porn is significantly related to loneliness. Porn is associated with relationship distress, disrupted attachment and strain in relational hardwiring, and causes harm to relationships. Divorce-doubles for men and women who use porn Effects of porn: Need bigger and bigger hits to get the same feeling Can shrink the brain-porn addicts have smaller volume and fewer un Turns off certain parts of the brain that process visual imagery. Circuits short term mentality- and devalues delayed gratification. Women in relationships with men who are addicted to porn, spectators reported not being as happy than with men who did not view pron. As Christians we should approach conversations with our kids about sexuality within the context of Marriage Sexuality within marriage is all about accountability and covenant. Raising real men means teaching and training them to fight temptation and to consider their own sexuality within the context of Love, Honor, and Virtue. Gregg Harris always said that we should not be teaching Sex Ed but Marriage Ed. Biblical answer- 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (on Sexual Immorality) Resource Guide: Raising Real Men Love, Honor, and Virtue Porn accountability: Covenant Eyes Accountability 2You Training Books: Every Man’s Battle Every Young Man’s Battle Raising Real Men Invite Hal and Melanie Young to speak at your church or conference! Communication with Dave and Lisa Nehring (Part 4)
Steps to communication: Listen Give feedback on what you think they are saying Affirm them Seek to know their thoughts Be sure of what they are saying by asking questions Be careful about when you speak. Try not to interrupt. Warning, give thought to your tone. But there must be reciprocity-back and forth Be authoritative without being authoritarian. At the end, have a “My part” and a “Your”, which must be upheld; this builds trust. If there isn’t a we, we have nothing at all. Communication with Dave and Lisa Nehring (part 2)
Middle schoolers argue, it is part of what they are. But it is a teaching opportunity: To teach them in this, reframe the situation for them; Affirm their identity -state the obvious if you need to: Encourage them; But always remember to pick your battles. We are in a time of social upheaval, so identity is critically important. Narrative requires hearing, listening, responding, for it to be a narrative. Teach children how they and their thoughts/feelings tie into a greater fabric of communication/family/identity Honor conveys something of value that is passed from group to individual, and individual to group. Communication= Me, thee, we. When you arrive at we, then you have communicated. The post Communication with Dave and Lisa Nehring (part 2) appeared first on Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Each distraction costs us over 23 minutes; in other words, every time we are distracted, we spend 23 minutes chasing bunny trails, before we get back on track! But the reality is that distraction isn’t about technology, it’s about how we fill our time. “Distraction, at its core, is this: confusion about what matters.” Curt Stienhorst Being distracted can have negative consequences: Multitasking can lead to information getting stored in the wrong part of the brain. The brain isn’t designed for multitasking; if you switch back and forth between tasks often enough, it can lead to feeling disoriented and exhausted. Your brain produces more cortisol, a stress hormone, when you multi-task, and can lead to irritability, aggression and impulsive behavior.
