What I Have Learned and Continue to Learn from Teachers, Employers, and Co-Workers
Show Notes: 39 What I Have Learned and Continue to Learn from Teachers, Employers, and Co-Workers Locations: Everywhere I have been and ongoing  1970’s to Present It is funny the different paths that simple decisions will take us down in this life. One of the best managers I have ever had was Marc Puhl. A Navy Chief Petty Officer, Store/District Manager and still a friend. He and many others in my life have had impacts in ways they probably don’t even know of. I was taught that regardless of the type of person you are around you can learn from them. Examples can be what to do or even what not to do, but one must keep their sights on goals and growth. I hope to be able to share some key points of continuing to grow in life by learning from others, the good, the bad, and the amazing.  I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube!  Thank you and go live your stories! Video Games and Pranks with Jared
Show Notes: 38 Video Games and Pranks with Jared Locations: Utah, Ongoing  1980’s Jared and I have always been fans of video games and it changed us a lot when Nintendo released the original Nintendo entertainment system. It developed and even greater amount of competitiveness in us both. That flowed over into pranks and always trying to one up the other. I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with us.    I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube!  Thank you and go live your stories! Rockhounding Adventures with Nancy
Show Notes 37: Rockhounding Adventures with Nancy Locations: Wyoming and Utah There are some amazing rocks and gems you can find in the outdoors. I grew up looking for fossils and rocks. Rockhounding has been a part of my life and I am lucky that my wife Nancy not only tolerates it but enjoys it with me. We have 2 rotary tumblers and a vibratory tumbler now and I am sure we will have more lapidary stuff to play with as we get older. It is just one more thing to look at the ground for and they make some beautiful conversation pieces. Since our trip to Scotland and Ireland was once again put on hold due to Covid and travel restrictions we decided to go on a week long rockhounding adventure. Make sure you visit your local rock shop and do your best to always get your supplies from local dealers when possible or online from small mom and pop shops when you can.  Get out there and live your stories!! Fall 2021 Big Game Guiding
Show Notes 36: Fall 2021 Big Game Guiding Locations: Wyoming and Utah I have always been fascinated by big game. Elk and mule deer are a magnificent animals and superb table fare. I love teaching others and enjoy guiding people who appreciate the wilderness and the beauty of nature. I struggle from time to time when I am guiding about the type of people that I am with. I have been doing it long enough that most of the people I fish and hunt with are repeat customers, but I also take out some new people each year. You never what you are going to get until you are out there. I have seen best friends fall apart when the going gets tough and I have seen people that are complete opposites find a bond through hunting and fishing. This year I had a couple firsts that are worth telling the stories of. There are days when nothing comes together, or you do not make good decisions and mess up your chance. Always remember that the worst hunt can become the best in just 5 seconds. Keep at it, stay positive, and sometimes everything comes together. The pursuit is exciting, the pack out and butchering is pure work, and the meals and memories are exquisite.  Get out there and live your stories!! Another Hobby: Brazilian Paper Hot Air Balloons (If you do this be careful!)
Show Notes 35: Another Hobby: Brazilian Paper Hot Air Balloons (If you do this be careful!) Locations: Utah and Wisconsin I am weird about my hobbies; they have always been cyclical with me. I would do one and dive in feet first. I tend to buy all the stuff you need and then I get excited about the next one and dive in again. It has created a lifelong love of learning and exploring new things. In the mid 90’s (yup I am that old now), I was in Brazil on a church mission. We were teaching a great guy who was retired Federal Police. He taught us about making these paper balloons. It is illegal to do in Brazil because of the fire danger…so of course I jumped in. More of a belly flop at the start but they got way better as I practiced and met others who enjoy it.  Get out there and live your stories!! Looking for Treasure and Lost Spanish Gold with my Grandma Betty
Show Notes 34: Looking for Treasure and Lost Spanish Gold with my Grandma Betty Locations: Utah Treasure hunting has been something I have pursued my entire life. The hunt for lost gold and mines from the Spanish that were in Utah has been intriguing to me and I enjoy any reason to get into the woods and mountains. This is mainly a teaser. While I do discuss some topics and talk about spending time looking for gold with my Grandma Betty, I do not go into too much detail. If you would like more information, feel free to contact me.  When panning or looking for gold please follow all laws and respect others claims. DO NOT TRESPASS! You can recreationally pan for gold in many National Forests and BLM land. Many of the treasure stories you hear and read about are not true. They are embellished by the authors to get you to part with your own treasure for the story. Keep that in mind while you look for treasure but also keep in mind…some of it is true. Hobbies and How I Got Started Carving Duck Decoys
Show Notes 33: Hobbies and How I Got Started Carving Duck Decoys Locations: Utah and Idaho Hobbies have always been a money drain and a release for me. I have a lot of hobbies and a few of them I am passionate about. When I was in college, my friend Jason Randolph introduced me to duck hunting over decoys with dogs and I have been forever thankful. I love ducks, dogs, and decoys. I soon began a collection of decoys for my own decoy spread and then began trying to make my own birds. Thanks to the DecoyCarvingForum (now a group on Facebook) and personal instruction from Tom Matus, I was able to get my birds into much better shape than my first cork goldeneye decoy.  Get out there and live your stories!! The Ups and Downs of Archery Elk Hunting and Nancy’s Biggest Bull Part 2
Show Notes 32: Locations: Wyoming The Ups and Downs of Archery Elk Hunting and Nancy’s Biggest Bull Part 2 Locations: Wyoming Since becoming a Wyoming resident and marrying Nancy over 5 years ago, we have been pursuing elk. They are a magnificent animal and superb table fare. Nancy was skeptical when I went archery hunting for elk the first year and came home with a cow elk later that evening. She was shocked. She started shooting archery and soon was chasing elk with her bow. Following breast cancer, she struggled to get her draw weight back up to the needed poundage so has been pursuing elk with a crossbow these last few years. Many missed opportunities and frustrations later, Nancy tagged her very first elk. The following year we put in for a limited entry unit in Wyoming and drew out. 2020 was a crazy year all around but Nancy her biggest bull elk to date and it was an experience neither of us will ever forget! Archery elk hunting is not what you see on social media and YouTube. There are days when nothing comes together, or you do not make good decisions and mess up your chance. Road Trip to Oregon for Clamming, Crabbing, and Fishing
Show Notes 30: Road Trip to Oregon for Clamming, Crabbing, and Fishing Locations: Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming WOW! Our world is crazy, but you do not have to be. Nancy and I decided after our trip to the UK was cancelled due to COVID-19, to travel to Oregon and go crabbing and clamming. We stayed at a crazy fun hotel in Crescent, Oregon called the Crescent Moon Motel. We got the glitter room, and the owner was super fun. We had a great Air BNB in Coos Bay, OR (Hollywood by the Bay). Great hosts and a super fun little spot. It is a bed, shower, and living space. Think kitchenette without the kitchen. There is a kitchen sink, microwave, and stuff but no stove. We took our Camp Chef and cooked outside. It was a great trip! We fished, clammed, and went crabbing in Coos Bay. For great gear and bait and local knowledge hit up the folks at The Bite’s On Bait and Tackle. Below is a link to their Facebook.  https://www.facebook.com/thebiteson/  Nancy caught a great silver salmon, and we came home with a bunch of crab. Since coming home we have had some great meals with our families. This was something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I am glad we made the road trip. Get out there and live your stories!! Chatting with My Good Friend JJ (Jason Randolph) about Guiding and Life: Part 2
Show Notes 29: Chatting with My Good Friend JJ (Jason Randolph) about Guiding and Life: Part 2 Locations: Utah, Nebraska, and Wyoming I was fortunate to meet and guide with JJ starting in 1997 out of Park City, UT. We have been friends ever since. We have been able to share many days on the water and in the duck blind. There are so many stories we have this will be a 2-part podcast and in all reality, I will have to sit down with him again sometime because I already remember more stories that we still haven’t even talked about.  JJ is an amazing guide and friend and a mediocre golfer lol, but if you get the chance you should float the North Platte river with him for some great fishing or hunt waterfowl with WYOBRASKA Waterfowl. It is hard to get JJ because he is booked most days, but I promise if you do you will have a great day even when the fish or birds do not cooperate. Even if you cannot hunt or fish with JJ, his guides and locations are outstanding! Get out there and enjoy some time on the water/blind with him. https://wyobraskawaterfowl.com/ https://www.northplattelodge.com/ This one has a little bit of swearing (a—holes is used a couple times)  Get out there and live your stories!! Show Notes 26: Cow Patties, Georgia Boys, High Mountain Fly Fishing, Thunderstorms, and Rob  Locations: High Uinta Mountains of Utah When fishing with friends who may not be as familiar with the backcountry areas you are in, it is a good idea to have a plan. When the plan goes awry and no one dies or gets hurt, then it makes for a fun story. Always buy more donuts at the Chevron in Kamas, UT than you think you need. Never leave them unattended if you want them later, or at the least make sure you are the first one back to the truck.  Get out there and live your stories!! Rambo, Ranger, Pheasants, Uncles, and an 870
Show Notes 25: My Very First Planned Pheasant Hunt, Ranger, Rambo, Uncles, and an 870 Locations: Utah  After bagging my first pheasant in my grandparent’s backyard and reading about them in the magazines I really wanted to do it the right way. I got my chance when I was 12 years old and my Uncles Larry and Brad took me to hunt. We had the aging Ranger with us and his son Rambo (short for rambunctious). What a fun day. We bagged some birds and had a good time. Get out there and live your stories!! My Mixed Breed Dog Chester, Merganser Jerky, Training Mistakes, and Dog Backpacks
Show Notes 24: My Mixed Breed Dog Chester, Merganser Jerky, Training Mistakes, and Dog Backpacks Locations: Utah and Wyoming I have always been a sucker for dogs. When I was a sophomore in college I made the mistake of stopping at the animal shelter and found Chester. Chester was WAY more expensive than I would have ever guessed and it took a lot of training to get him to do the things I wanted him to do but I am forever grateful that I was his human for all those years. We had a great time chasing birds and seemed to have an affinity for mergansers.  Get out there and live your stories!! Being Uncle Travis
Show Notes 23: Being Uncle Travis Locations: Utah and Wyoming Growing up I had a lot of uncles that would take me on adventures and help me to do things that I was not able to do with my parents. I have always been thankful for those experiences and memories. I like grabbing a nephew or niece and heading out on an adventure. I try to give them an experience and a memory and hopefully teach them something. Sometimes we worry too much about what bad things may happen and those things rob us of the potential adventure. DO NOT worry! Prepare for things but do not let it cripple your sense of adventure. Get out there, and live your stories!! Chuck, Brook Trout, Poison Ivy, Turkey Hunting, Taylor, and the Shaking Tree
Show Notes 22: Chuck, Brook Trout, Poison Ivy, Turkey Hunting, Taylor, and the Shaking Tree Locations: Minnesota and Wisconsin Spending time in the Mid-West after college was a wonderful experience. I spent the first few years focused on all of the things that I hadn’t been able to do in the western states, whitetail deer and turkey hunting, fishing for musky, walleye, and sturgeon, and finding all sorts of new mushrooms and wild edibles. This podcast is a story about a work friend named Chuck and my first experience with poison ivy. We fish for brook trout near the Kinnikinnick River and have a great time. I also talk about hunting turkeys with my stepson Taylor with a story about a shaking tree. If you are looking for equipment check out Mills Fleet Farm. I really enjoyed working for them and the friendships I made there are some of the best I have ever had. Blackjack
Show Notes 21: Blackjack Locations: Northern Utah I had never considered naming a spot on a river or anything else for that matter. I had some great times fishing a certain bend on the Weber river in Utah and had a client name one of my favorite runs. Over the years the river has changed and meandered but one thing has been consistent, the run holds fish. I learned you can never assume too much when it comes to explaining safety to some people. A Ride Along With Jared
Show Notes 19: A Ride Along with Jared  Locations: Northern Utah Spending some time with Jared on a ride along. The Mirror Lake Highway (HWY 150) is and outstanding drive from Kamas, UT to Evanston, WY. This highway takes you to some of the best trailheads and lakes in the Uinta mountains. The recreation available off the Mirror Lake Highway is very diverse and is one of my favorite places to go in Utah. Today’s episode is about a forest run with Jared and what a punk he can be.  If you are enjoying the stories and the podcast, I would really appreciate a 5 star review and please subscribe so you don’t miss an episode.  I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube!  Original episode artwork created by Scott Simkins.
