It isn’t a Matter of if AI will Replace Marketing People
This is part of a series of interviews with industry leaders about artificial intelligence’s impact on the marketing and sales departments' current and future headcount. We interview Paul Teshima, a former Eloqua executive and CEO of Nudge.ai (acquired by Affinity in March 2020). The executives interviewed so far seem to believe that AI will create jobs while also changing the job description of those in both sales and marketing. Paul may have a different opinion. The host is Jim Obermayer About Paul Teshima Paul is the CEO and Co-founder of Nudge.ai, a modern sales platform that uses artificial intelligence to provide sales teams with actionable insights on their target customers. He is a successful technology executive who has run Services, Customer Success, Account Management, Support and Product Management teams. As part of Eloqua’s executive team, Paul helped lead the company from $0 to over $100 million in revenue, then through IPO and a successful acquisition for $957 million by Oracle. He’s a firm believer that company culture trumps strategy every time, and that storytelling is an essential part of creating a business. He has a successful track record as a leader with a strong focus on sales and customer engagement. About Nudge (acquired by Affinity in March 2020) Nudge was co-founded in 2014 by former Eloqua executives, Paul Teshima and Steve Woods. After having successfully guided Eloqua to a market leading position in marketing automation from $0 to over $100 million in revenue, then through IPO and acquisition by Oracle for $957 million, Teshima and Woods recognized another massive challenge to solve – this time, however, it was on the sales side. The best sales professionals understand that people buy from people they know, like and trust. In a world that’s becoming overloaded with information, it’s becoming harder to build trusted, authentic relationships with buyers and existing customers. This is where Teshima and Woods saw the biggest challenge, and the biggest opportunity yet to be solved. Paul recently appeared on our sister program Sales Pipeline Radio with Matt Heinz: The Power of Relationship Marketing in a Distracted World. How a Marketing Platform Drives Customer Experience
Marketing in B2B companies is divided into those companies that have a sophisticated marketing platform (aka marketing automation system) and those that don’t. Those without a marketing automation system or marketing platform don’t know what’s happening to their marketplace until their pipeline is evaporating before their eyes. While marketing automation software users revel in the revenue growth, the biggest benefit, says David Greenberg, is enhanced customer experience. Building a Company Based on the Inner Athlete
Whether we were on a team requiring competent levels of motor skills, strength, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and endurance, or in a company or club where we work together, and make a personal sacrifice for the collective benefit of our friends or colleagues there are common themes to the success of the team. SquadLocker founder and CEO Gary Goldberg lives these values, encourages them within SquadLocker, but also in his daily life. He and our host, Susan Finch both admit they were probably tied for last place for being chosen to be on teams as they were growing up. But, there are so many ways our children can learn the value of a good mentor, coach, and team experience that will set them up to be the one EVERYONE is vying for them. ----more---- Some of the values covered in this episode include these pointers for success: Never play the victim. Never react impulsively. Don't take it personally. Take your losses and move on. Turn criticism into an opportunity. Celebrate the wins, but there is no need to peacock in the endzone - humility is a wonderful trait. Perseverance, dedication, desire, communication, teamwork, leadership skills, motivation, learning from failures, putting the team first, keeping out the parasites (hat tip to Chris Beall), and handling criticism are all qualities of a person we want to have on our team, and in our companies. Malcolm Lemmons tells us, "Many times, the most successful athletes aren’t the ones with the most talent and skills, but rather they are the ones who can be the most persistent and mentally tough. They are the ones who put in the extra work when no one is watching and they are the ones who have the will to outlast their opponent. They will do anything to come out on top and it is no different in entrepreneurship." Listen in. How do you feel about your own inner athlete? Are you the one who will show up every day, even when you don't feel like it? About Susan's guest: Gary Goldberg is a third-generation textile engineer who has enjoyed designing textile consumer products for some of the world's most recognized retailers and brands. He admits that he never reached star athlete status during his younger days, but recently has enjoyed learning to play Squash with his 3 teenage children. He is regularly beaten at pick up basketball by his two boys but claims he wants them to win. A native to New England, he resides in Providence, RI, and is the proud owner of a French Bulldog named Gallagher.
