Spoken Word
Our late night DJ 'Midnight Marsh' is back on the airwaves. This time he's got something to say about..the spoken word! But don't think for a minute it's going to have some Beatnik coffee house snapping fingers vibe! The first track 'Rust & Paprika' by Bloke will get you up and on your feet! It might be an offshoot of Carl's band Happyhead with his mate Bill Clift, but mostly it'll give you Happy Feet! The next track is from the Shriekback album 'Why Anything? Why This?'. It's called 'The Painter Paints'. It's a prose poem. No! It's an abstract essay. No! It's a pop song! The painter paints, the writer writes. What will you do tonight?David Barrett and Carl have been working together for  quite awhile. Check out 'Falling Inside', it's an interesting observation of more things than I could possibly list here! Geoff Woolley has been working with Carl the longest. Including his early band 'Out On Blue Six'. This track is done under the name 'The Palace Dogs'. You'll hear a familiar voice throughout. It's a great track, and I think you'll put it on repeat. It's also never been released so ya gotta check it out!Carl shares the spotlight with fellow Shriekback bandmate Barry Andrews. His spoken word contribution is 'Win a Night With a Well Known Paranoiac'. Just give it a listen. It's worth it.

"One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back." Barry does a deep dive into the world of .... nonsense.  He talks about Lewis Carroll's 'Jabborwocky' (did you know that George Orwell wrote an essay about nonsense poetry? Now ya do!) Barry tries on a dubious Irish accent again as he reads from, and talks about James Joyce's 'Finnegans Wake'. Ever thought about the nature of the multilingual pun? Me either! But Barry has, and tells us all about it. (Here you get to hear Barry do a very dubious French accent! No one's safe!) If you're a fan of Father Ted than you're already familiar with Bishop Brennan played by James Norton. Barry plays a bit of Norton reading Finnegans Wake. Not as funny as 'Kicking Bishop Brennan Up the Arse', but it's close! We flip the neologistic album over and the first track on side 2 is The Clash's 'Janie Jones'. Barry talks about an essay he wrote 'Jewels and Binoculars Hang From the Head of the Mule...or do they?' We go from the saccharine 'It Might as Well Rain Until September' to the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd's 'BIke'. Then we meet Rambling Syd Rumpo. Shriekback does make an appearance."All chemical all funny-man all belly-flop all dilly dallyAll muddy moan all billy bolly all wobble-why all shilly shallyAll chemical all funny-man all belly-flop all dilly dallyAll muddy moan all billy bolly all wobble-why all shilly shally"Till next time, let's keep in mind what the great Hugo Ball had to say on the subject; 'gadji beri bimba glandridi laula lonni cadori gadjama gramma berida bimbala glandri galassassa laulitalomini gadji beri bin blassa glassala laula lonni cadorsu sassala bim gadjama tuffm i zimzalla binban gligla wowolimai bin beri ban o katalominai rhinozerossola hopsamen laulitalomini hoooo gadjama rhinozerossola hopsamen bluku terullala blaulala loooo'

More literary inspiration for some Shriekback tunes
Barry talks again about the literary inspiration for a few Shriekback songs. 'Faded Flowers' makes another appearance. Why not? It's a great song! He tells us about how 'Faded Flowers' and 'This Big Hush' owe a lot to Sylvia Plath, and specifically her 1962 poem 'Elm'. It's nice to hear Barry give the poem a read. "Or shall I bring you the sound of poisons?   This is rain now, this big hush. And this is the fruit of it: tin-white, like arsenic."Then it's 1992, and the album 'Sacred City' is released. There's the song 'Signs' with influences by Jonathan Raban's 'Soft City', and Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities'. "You walk for days among trees and among stones. Rarely does the eye light on a thing, and then only when it has recognised that thing as the sign of another thing: a print in the sand indicates the tiger's passage; a marsh announces a vein of water; the hibiscus flower, the end of winter.""Beatles Zebra Crossing?" brings us to a tale of the famous 'crosswalk' or as we say in the UK 'Zebra Crossing'. It leads us to an interesting thought experiment...

Martyn Barker talks about 'Faded Flowers' and 'Fish Below the Ice'.
In this episode Martyn Barker talks about the 'seed' that became 'Faded Flowers'. From a technicians bench in Amsterdam, to the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto! It's got a Suriname influence. Check out this video to hear some Suriname music. See if that groove about a minute in sounds familiar. Here's a performance of 'Faded Flowers' from Shriekback's 2017 concert in London. Martyn then talks about 'Fish Below the Ice' it's also from the 'Oil and Gold' album, he says  it's basically the 'brother' track to 'Faded Flowers'. 'Fish Below the Ice' was also performed at the 2017 show. He ends the podcast with some kind words, 'cause as much of as a bad ass drummer he may be, he's a hell of a nice guy!

The literary inspiration for some Shriekback tunes
Barry Andrews of Shriekback talks about the influence that literature has had on a few of his songs. 1.
