This is a reading of the introduction to Dorothy Allison’s celebrated story collection “Trash” that draws on her own intergenerational experiences of growing up in a poor, white Southern family in the US.

I read this essay in the Paris Review thanks to Shamini who shared it in the first place. I felt like reading it for myself, aloud, was a way to do justice to its intentions. The essay challenges sex-gender categories to say the least. You can also read it on the PR website.
