Episode 025: Ever wonder how mindfulness and meditation became so mainstream?
Episode 025: Show NotesEver wonder how mindfulness and meditation became so mainstream? Think about it, ten years ago when you went to a bookstore looking for meditation books, they were only in the spirituality section. Now you’ll find them in the business section, the science section, the self-help section, the spirituality section, and who knows where else. The knowledge of meditation’s benefits have been around for centuries but it seems like no one cared to listen until someone decided that meditation is the new simple experience that will make you better, faster, stronger in this non-stop, always on society that we find ourselves in. The ‘re-branding’ of meditation (to be the quick and easy tool to conquer more, more efficiently) has made the activity available to a whole new demographic of people who don’t necessarily want the spiritual benefits. Due to this new take on mediation, it has also gained more interest in the mental health field. The world “meditation” is derived from the Latin/Greek roots of the word “medicine” which makes total sense when you think about how in ancient times, physicians were also spiritual advisors or healers.  Meditation is proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety, which is the main reason why I’ve picked up the habit but I’m also extremely interested in the spiritual benefits mediation provides. But what exactly is meditation? Transcendental Meditation is a discipline from the Hindu Vedic tradition and is achieved through the use of  mantras. Using the mantras or focusing on a specific word helps to promote relaxed awareness and achieve stillness. Mindfulness meditation is based on the 2,500 year old Buddhist tradition of increasing awareness, wisdom, and the ability to live life moment to moment. This practice emphasizes stress reduction and the power of focus. When someone begins meditating, they enter an altered state of consciousness. This state of consciousness is achieved in mindfulness meditation by focusing on the present moment non-judgmentally. This practice helps to open your awareness to everything that the mind and spirit want you to know.  The goal isn’t to shut down your mind, but instead the goal is to help you pay attention to thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations more clearly, from a detached perspective. Philosophers have said that practicing meditation regularly leads to a state of enlightenment, while Buddhist and Hindu traditions say it leads you into transcendental consciousness, and the Ancient Greeks have even said that meditation leads you into a state of being. Even if you have never contemplated meditating before, I hope those few descriptions gave you the itch to try it! LOVING THE PODCAST? Episode 024: Emerging From Depression
Episode 024: Show NotesHey guys! Clearly, I have not released an episode in quite some time, plus there is a new look and a new intro to the podcast so let’s talk about what has been happening. Real life: Seasonal Affective Disorder has been kicking my butt. Like a total ass whopping level of kicking my butt this year. I won’t get into all the details as I put out a blog post recently about what has been going on. So feel free to go read that if you’re feeling curious. Essentially, I restructured my brand, the whole website, the podcast, everything…..and I totally maxed myself out. Total burn out PLUS a super rainy fall season led to me falling face first into depression and isolation mode.  I learned my lesson the hard way but now I know I can’t be doing #AllTheThings all of the time. Rest and relaxation is going to be the theme of my winter season.  I’ve given up coffee and alcohol… for the most part. And if I have any of either, it will not be over one glass per day.  I’ve been committing at least 10 minutes per day to some sort of self-care activity whether it has been reading for personal enjoyment, gratitude journalling, yoga,  meditation, or just listening to a few of my favorite podcasts.  I’ve also committed to not put myself in situations that I don’t agree with and avoid toxic people as best as possible. So far, these few simple changes have made an amazing impact. I’ve been finally feeling like myself again. Inspired to create more episode, to write more blog posts, and most of all help all of you. I feel like this horrible lapse into depression was to realign me with my work in the world, to help people overcome their mental health challenges so they can live life to the fullest and become the leaders who make the change they wish to see in the world. That was a big driving force in restructuring this podcast, I want to constantly provide you with holistic resources that have helped me to overcome my bouts of anxiety and depression. The more I learn and the more I grow, the more I have to share with you.  In that respect, I appreciate all of my mental setbacks as they help me to offer a new perspective and an opportunity to serve you in a greater capacity. Episode 017: Eating Disorder Recovery, Motherhood, and Mindset Work with Kate Crocco
Episode 017: Show NotesOn today’s episode, I was joined by Confidence and Mindset coach, Kate Crocco! I was so excited to record this episode with Kate as I could relate to her story so much and I look up to her daily for inspiration. During this episode we discuss Kate's journey from being a psychotherapist to becoming a confidence and mindset coach for female entrepreneurs. While working as a therapist, Kate saw how her addiction patients would recover much quicker through the help of peer-to-peer counsellors who could share their similar story with the patients, versus the actual therapy where all Kate could provide was strategies and techniques to recover. As someone who struggled with depression, anxiety, and an eating disorder, Kate longed to share her story with her patients, and just wanted to let them know that they could get better and that there was a way out. As this is not allowed when you're a therapist, Kate found her way to life coaching and realized it was the perfect blend of what she was looking to do, even though she was terrified to make the jump.Kate and I also talk about motherhood and how she juggles being a mom, running a business, and doing #AllTheThings.  LOVING THE PODCAST? Episode 015: How Family Constellation Therapy & Energy Work Can Help Your Mental Health
Episode 015: Show NotesOn Episode 015, I invited Hanna Bier to discuss her past experiences with mental illness and how she transformed her life with family constellation therapy and energy work. This was the first time I’ve ever heard of family constellation therapy so if you’re brand new to this topic too, don’t worry! I asked a LOT of questions and Hanna had all the answers. The lowdown is that for some of us affirmations, NLP techniques, and reconstructing our subconscious minds works wonder, but for Hanna it just wasn’t making a difference so she searched for the reason why. She learned that those who struggled with significant trauma at some point in their life have a harder time reprogramming their mindset.Trauma is passed down through our family’s genetic code, as is a lot of positive traits, but let’s focus on the negative traits right now.The most basic understanding that I could come up with was that genetic predispositions leave us with a lot of junk and family constellation therapy helps us to resolve and clean up all the junk. Then Hanna and I discuss what her life as a monk for 3 and a half years was like before we dive into a conversation about energy work.Hanna is part of a small percentage of people who can actually visually see auras so at the end of our conversation, I asked her what my aura looked like. (I mean, how could I not?!)This conversation was eye opening and I learned a lot of new information that I hope you’ll enjoy learning as much as I did.Enjoy! LOVING THE PODCAST? Episode 014: Passion To Profession - When Writing Becomes The Best Of Both Worlds (With Ashly Hilst)
Episode 014: Show NotesOn Episode 014, I invited Ashly Hilst on the show. Ashly is a developmental editor which means she's basically the fairy godmother you need when you're stuck writing your book! Some of the things we talk about include turning writing from a self-care tool into a profession, destroying the self-doubt that usually accompanies people who write, and how your unique perspective on the most discussed topics are what turns turns people into your people. Then we jump into how Ashly gets shit done as an entrepreneurial mom with anxiety and depression, how she battles and combats imposter syndrome, and how important it is for her to get a bird's eye perspective on the situations at hand so she can eliminate the accompaning feelings of imposter syndrome.Of course we end up talking about the power of affirmations and how batching content helps to organize your business structure to get more accomplished. My favorite part of this conversation is when Ashly gives us her advice on how to WRITE THE DAMN BOOK. The two key parts to this advice were:You need support and accountability to keep you engaged in writing consistentlyFind a coach or an editor who will give your book individualized attentionThen we end our conversation with a discussion about the process behind writing and publishing a book, what being an editor actually entails, and important aspects that need to be included in every book.Did you know there are multiple types of editors?? Because I totally didn't! There are developmental editors, copy editors, proof reading editors and so many other types in the publishing world that we don't get to dive into. For all you aspiring NY Times Bestselling Authors out there, I hope you enjoy episode 014 and let it guide you one step further on your writing journey!  LOVING THE PODCAST? Episode 013: How to Support Your Body Throughout Burnout with Kelly Agnew
Episode 013: Show NotesI hope you're ready for an amazing episode because DAMN does this episode teach A LOT. For Episode 013 I invited Kelly Agnew onto the show to talk about her four pillars to help support your body throughout burnout. As entrepreneurs, let alone entrepreneurs living with mental health conditions, we're destined to hit burnout once or twice (or ten times!) in our career. When Kelly brought this topic to me, it couldn't have been at a better time. This past November I was smack dab in the middle of possibly the worst burnout of my entrepreneurial career. So clearly, the topic of how to COMBAT burning out and get back to a positive healthy lifestyle, was something I really wanted to share with you all!And let me tell you, if you're one of the fortunate souls who hasn't felt burn out before... take Kelly's four pillars to heart because you do not want to enter that nasty place. So what are these pillars that Kelly and I talk about? The 4 Pillars to Support Your Body Throughout BurnoutDiet / NutritionSupplementationLifestyleMindsetWe dive deep into these pillars so you're going to want to dedicate a good hour to listening to this episode! You're going to hear a little about our personal experiences with burnout, why you shouldn't be giving 100% of yourself at work, vitamins you should totally be taking when you're stressed or burnt out, and oh my goodness so much more. Let's just say that I've given up coffee after having this conversation.... well for the most part 😉We even cover what a Naturopath (ND) is and how they can help you differently than a Medical Doctor (MD), how it's actually a biological response when you start craving junk food when you're stressed, and why protein and healthy fats are essential for every meal to avoid burning out. And what's a Shining From The Shadows episode without a little meditation, stress management talk and obviously we mention the power of the best free resource... breathing!  LOVING THE PODCAST? Episode 012: The Positive Power of Forgiveness & The Toxicity of Complaints
Episode 012: Show NotesToday’s episode is jump started by the topic of forgiveness, followed by messages of Christianity, and whole-hearted truth. After experiencing excessive amounts of judgement and complaining about others, Amberlin tried to find a resource to help remove the toxicity from her life. From those actions, The Complainer’s Journal was born. Now, Amberlin is working on creating The Workbook to The Complainer’s Journal. Amberlin believes that pen to paper action creates more results than just reading about techniques. What I love about Amberlin’s main work is that although they both revolve around grace, compassion, dignity, and forgiveness, the two pieces focus on separate aspects of complaints.Have more issue with people and relations - pick up the Complainer’s Journal.Having a ton of issues around situations, events in your life, or just general ruts? Then pick up The Complainer’s Journal Workbook! In the second half of the interview, Amberlin and I talk about how we’re so quick to put shameful titles upon ourselves while positive attributes are much harder to accept. Funny how that works, isn’t it?Then we dive into the last part of our conversation which left me with an ear to ear smile. Amberlin talks about how she writes books with her son and how you can integrate your children and your passion more! You’re totally going to want to hear this part of the episode because, damn, does it leave you with a full heart and a big cheesy grin!  LOVING THE PODCAST? Now I raise them and write on the side. My hopes are that my example teaches them about the priorities and passions that make life precious and exciting.
