The Goal is Self-Denial Not Self-Love
Hi friends, Welcome back to the She’s Rooted Podcast. We’re well into Spring. When I first started to write this episode I noted a tree in my parent’s backyard. I had this song stuck in my head and it’s called Springtime by Chris Renzema. I’ll talk about that in a second, but when I first started writing this episode, I was laying on my dad’s hammock and saw this tree start to form little buds. Then every time we’d have dinner in the backyard I would see these leaves forming more and more.  And just this week I told my husband “wow! That tree has all its leaves”. It is truly amazing. It led me to so much appreciation that the Lord reveals our spiritual reality in the physical reality by showing us to stay rooted in Him and He will take what is pruned & dead and grow new leaves that are beautiful & full.  So this song, Springtime by Chris Renzema.  I will link the spotify link to the show notes, but you have to listen. One line says,  “We will sing a new song, 'Cause death is dead and gone with the winter. We will sing a new song, let "hallelujahs" flow like a river. We're coming back to life reaching towards the light. Your love is like springtime.” His love is like Springtime. He restores, refreshes and brings light to our souls. How is 2021 treating you? We are just about 5 months in. I truly hope that you are growing deeper roots in Jesus and if not, if you’re losing your way, I have encouragement for you. James 4:8 is always one of my favorites when I am drifting, getting too consumed with the things of this world & not living in His presence.  “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8 From personal experience as well as witnessing others lives, if we are not intentionally drawing near, we are definitely drawing further. So whatever it may be, maybe you need a different circle of people or a mentor - to help you fix your eyes on Jesus. Or maybe you have great people and you’re not walking in honesty with them, this is your message or your sign to cling to Him and cling to your people. We need one another. Okay, so fast & hard turn, today’s episode is titled “The Goal is Self-Denial Not Self-Love”. We never hear the terms self-care, self-love or even self-confidence in the Bible. I used to be pretty lax with this. I even did a series on 1st Corinthians 13 that I had to pull from the podcast episodes because I included self-love in there. Here’s the thing, not only is there not a command to love ourselves there’s even warning against it. In 2nd Timothy 3 starting in verse 1-5 when Paul writes, “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these.” So I start that off because I do believe our language matters. The self is not a steady please for us to rest. All throughout the psalms David writes in Psalm 32:7 “You are my hiding place; You keep me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance.” And to further the point more, in verses 1-6 David writes about confessing and repenting of his sin and because of that he has this attached love with the Lord. It’s truly beautiful.  Furthermore there’s so many other scriptures, Psalm 18:1-3 “I love You, O Lord, my strength.” The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies.”  Psalm 91:1-4 “One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will lodge in the shad...

A Conversation on Comparison & Community (Satisfied by Alyssa Bethke Book Review)
Introduction  In Spring 2021, Talia joined Alyssa Bethke’s launch team for the release of her new book, Satisfied: Finding Hope, Joy, and Contentment Right Where You Are. Talia wanted to find a way beyond a social media post to share about Alyssa’s book & so Talia invited a group of sisters from the launch team to join her to discuss quotes on community and comparison. Alyssa’s book Satisfied is an encouragement to find satisfaction in the Lord in whatever season we are in. Instead of thinking, “I need friends. Who will want me?” I had to start saying to myself, “Who can I be a friend to? Who needs some encouragement?” I had to be okay with being the pursuer, whether they responded or not. If I always am to be the one asking or leading, that’s okay because I’m imitating Christ and how He pursues us always. I can pursue because He pursues me.”  - Alyssa Bethke from Satisfied: Finding Hope, Joy, and Contentment Right Where You Are “Friends and community are God-given desire. We are made for them. We need one another. A lot of times relationships are not perfect or necessarily how we envisioned them because people are messy and life can be full and busy.”  - Alyssa Bethke from Satisfied: Finding Hope, Joy, and Contentment Right Where You Are “But here’s what I know to be true. First, God is the only one who can fill your loneliness. No person, no girlfriend can do it. That simply puts an impossible pressure on someone else. God only can comfort you, fill you up and satisfy you. It’s only from a place of resting in God and His love for you, that you can be a good friend to begin with. To love someone else well, to have courage to pursue friendships, you first have to be filled up with His love. He wants to satisfy you. He wants to be the one you run to and confide in.”  - Alyssa Bethke from Satisfied: Finding Hope, Joy, and Contentment Right Where You Are “I think God brings different people in our communities in different seasons for a purpose and for a reason. And sometimes the thing we get so caught up in seeing how people have these huge communities and we tend to overlook that even if our community is small, it doesn’t mean that that community isn’t important to us and to our hearts.” ~ Brandy Strong “We have to be so intentional with knowing that God satisfies us so that we can be propelled to be intentional in all these other areas.” ~ Grace Rios “In order to be your best self & really give the most & the best version of yourself to your community, you have to work on making sure that you are good & stable mentally,

Grief & Joy Can Hold Hands W/Beverly Ross
Summary  The word hope is thrown out so loosely, “I hope I pass my test” or “I hope that my favorite team wins”. But what happens when we journey through faith testing, earthquakes, life altering seasons. Even more so, what about when we lose those we love the most? In this podcast episode, Talia is joined by Beverly Ross who has so much to say on Hope - with a capital “H”- because Hope has a name and His name is Jesus.  Guest Information Beverly is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, Founder and Executive Director of Wise County Christian Counseling and Jenny's Hope in Decatur, Texas. She is married to Rick, who is a pastor. They have three adult children, Jenny, Josh, and Jonathan. Jenny died in February 2010. Since then, Hope has been an intentional focus of her life and her ministry. Scarred Hope is her first book that she wrote with her son, Josh. Rick and Beverly love spending time with their adult children and their five grandchildren. They love to travel with family and friends, enjoying the local cuisine. Beverly loves visiting coffee shops and spending time doing whatever her grandchildren love to do.  Beverly can be found on all social media here: https://www.facebook.com/rossbeverly https://www.instagram.com/beverlyross/ https://twitter.com/beverlyross Beverly’s Book Scarred Hope can be found here:  Quotables: “There is a shift in your soul when you recognize the spiritual discipline it takes to hold on to love, to hold onto hope, to hold onto kindness, to hang on to joy, which are all components.” ~ Beverly Ross  “Joy is so vulnerable. Think of a time that you feel so much joy and your heart is just open. And then a wound comes and you can’t clamp it up fast enough. And we resist, what if I open myself to joy and what if I get sucker punched again? But joy is from the Lord. And it is brave, it is so brave. It requires every ounce of courage you can muster up. But it is our distinguishing flavor as a Christian, to walk in joy.” ~ Beverly Ross  “I believe that we live in a grief denying & a grief defying culture that has even carried over into our churches.” ~ Beverly Ross  “Feeling tamped down, feelings locked in, feelings unprocessed come out in very negative expressions.” ~ Beverly Ross  “To hold space for another means that I am not going to try to fix you. I’m not even going to try to offer hope yet. I just want to be with you & remind you that the Lord is here.”  ~ Beverly Ross Question 1)  ~ I have always been touched by the message of hope you share from just your experience of losing your daughter Jenny.  Question 2)  ~ I love that you share about hope being a spiritual discipline. I think also with joy & hope they can be seen a Christian bonuses which is not what Jesus tells us. I know that you share that Grief & Joy can hold hands? Can you share more on that?  Question 3)  ~ I saw a video you shared about high school senior moms who are missing out on their children’s graduations because of the pandemic. I never thought of the loss that high school senior moms were experiencing.  Question 4)  ~ What is your take on unprocessed grief?  Question 5 ~ How do we hold space for one another when we go through grief?  Question 6 ~ When we don’t have words for our grief or we are processing it. Is there any advice you have on this?  Question 7 ~ I would love to know your thoughts on the phrase “time heals all wounds”.
