Find out how her dorkyness ruined the surprise for her hubby. Lindsey also finally decided that her aunt would be the recipient for the feather and fan scarf. It was the perfect choice! Kate decided at the last minute to not worry at all about finishing any knitting, and just sort of rolled with what she had for the holidays. Holiday Madness!
She Can Make – Show Notes Episode 21 This week’s episode is brought to you by Plum Deluxe! Today’s segments include: • In the Workroom • Alterations • A Review or Two • Crafting with Kids • And from the Mailbag Grab a cup of tea, make yourself comfortable and let’s start making. In The Workroom: Kate has finished her breakwater socks, just in time for Christmas! She is continuing work on her dark and stormy sweater. She is also trying to find the perfect hat pattern for the yarn she discussed in last week’s alterations. Lindsey finally finished her mittens, and even tried them out in the snow on the weekend. They were great for making snow angels at the farm with Hubby and Miss O! She’s kinda still working on the teal hat, it will get done eventually, but maybe not while it’s still cold. Lindsey wants to make a sleeve for her new travel tea cup, it keeps the tea hot for hours, but due to the double layers the outside gets super cold. She’s hoping to use some stash yarn for this. Alterations: Kate thinks she’s going to have to employ a Knitmore technique and bribe herself to finish all the many sleeves in her life, perhaps with a healthy helping of cake. Although Lindsey is super happy with her mittens there are some changes she would make for another pair. She finds the thumb gusset too big for her, instead of increasing every two rounds she thinks she will try every three, or alternate. And now a word from our sponsor: Love trying new teas? Treat yourself to a Plum Deluxe tea subscription. Starting only $10/month in the US and $17 for Canada, you'll receive a hand blended, all-organic, loose leaf tea thoughtfully chosen for the season. Tea club members also enjoy special benefits like free shipping on all purchases, discounts (you get 20% off your first purchase after you join), gift swaps, and access to a supportive community. Plum Deluxe also has a delightful selection of a la carte teas and artisan teaware in their online shop. Visit plumdeluxe.com and explore. A Review or Two: Lindsey reviews McCall’s pattern M7350 Misses' Gathered Scoop Neck or Surplice Dresses – Moderate stretch knits only. She made version A, find out what she loved and didn’t for this one. Crafting With Kids: Miss O and Lindsey have been busy with the holidays visiting family and trying to do as much snow playing and skating as they can manage, but not much in the crafting department. Miss O is also starting to learn to play more board games and they have been trying to get some time in on those. From the Mail Bag: Intro and Question from Dave: How do you find motivation to work on other projects after the holiday frenzy? This week’s episode is brought to you by Plum Deluxe! Gadget and Tool Upgrades - E20
She Can Make – Show Notes Episode 20 This week’s episode is brought to you by Plum Deluxe. Today’s segments include: • In the Workroom • Alterations • Gifts for Knitters • A Review or Two • Crafting with Kids • Events Spotlight • And from the Mail Bag Grab a cup of tea, make yourself comfortable and let’s start making. Thank you so much for joining us! In The Workroom: Lindsey finally got her husband’s socks finished, and before Christmas! She may have something else in the works for him, but time is getting short. Lindsey is still trudging along on the cable hat, and despite her frustration with this project she is signing up for a sock knitting class in the new year. Kate is making good progress on her Breakwater socks, a few inches left! She is continuing to work on the sleeves for the conifer sweater, but mostly she has been spinning to avoid the sleeves. Alterations: Kate ran into some problems trying to Navajo/Chain ply her braid of Corriedale, she maybe needs a bit more practice. Find out how it turned out and what she’s going to use it for. Lindsey discusses how moving up North has required an update in snow gear, which means a change in colour scheme for all the winter gear she is working on. Lindsey is also ecstatic that she was able to fix a mistake on her mittens without even paying much attention. This has her feeling much more confident about fixing future mistakes should they arise. And now a word from our sponsor: Love trying new teas? Treat yourself to a Plum Deluxe tea subscription. Here are Kate’s top five things to upgrade: 1. Needles! Find out the needles they want to try and order a single set, not a whole set of of interchangeables unless they’ve tried them, but a single set, or tester set of interchangeables and a promissory note to upgrade if they like them. 2. Scissors. There is no such thing as too many pairs of scissors, and honestly I love a cheap set, but a really beautiful sturdy set of high quality scissors that are worth sharpening are a gift your maker will have forever. 3. Project bags. We have a lot of stuff and it’s so nice to be able to kit it up and make it portable. That way, when we find the yarn later, the pattern and needles will hopefully be all in one place. 4. Row counters / stitch markers to make our lives easier. 5. A good ball winder and or swift. You can never go wrong with a Stanwood needle craft winder. A Review or Two: Lindsey reviews the Yarns of Rhichard Devrieze. They are a definite recommend from her, find out why. Crafting With Kids: Miss O and Lindsey tackle some chocolate making in preparation for some upcoming family get-togethers. It takes them three tries and the better part of an afternoon to get it right, but it all worked out in the end. Events Spotlight: Congratulations to Amberly Salem who is our lucky winner from our Muskoka Yarn Box giveaway. Kate discusses the new Yarn & Fibre Festival in Fenelon Falls, ON in June! We’ve started preparations to bring you the Kawartha Yarn & Fibre festival, and right now the call for vendors is out. If you’re an independent small to medium sized business interested in vending @ a fully accessible and indie focused festival in early June in the Kawarthas, please reach out to us at kawarthayff@gmail.com to get on the vendor list. Cables and Classes - E19
She Can Make – Show Notes Episode 19 This week’s episode is brought to you by Plum Deluxe. Today’s segments include: • In the Workroom • Alterations • Skills Lab • A Review or Two • Crafting with Kids • Events Spotlight • And from the Mail Bag Grab a cup of tea, make yourself comfortable and let’s start making. Thank you so much for joining us! In The Workroom: Lindsey is on a bit of a finishing kick for her projects in the works. She is also hoping to get some holiday sewing done if there is time. Kate is continuing to work on her Dark and Stormy Sweater. Kate got her second ugly Christmas sock done; she thinks that the Regia Pairfect might just be the cure for second sock syndrome. Kate has had a chance to try out her spiffy new Roger Hawkins wool combs made in Peterborough ON. She also attended her Next Step Wheel Class @ Gemini Fibre, which is how she decided on those combs. She is also learning a lot about prepping a whole fleece. Find out what’s been good and not so good about her experience. Alterations: Lindsey isn’t running into too many issues this week, but that’s because she is finishing up projects already in the works. She is also eyeing up her UFO pile and figuring out what to keep working on and what to cave and just turn back into balls of yarn. Kate comes to the realization that mostly every pair / set of needles in her house are occupied in some fashion or another. She also thinks a sort through the UFO pile is in order. And now a word from our sponsor: Love trying new teas? Treat yourself to a Plum Deluxe tea subscription. Starting only $10/month in the US and $17 for Canada, you'll receive a hand blended, all-organic, loose leaf tea thoughtfully chosen for the season. Month will be added when your order is processed. Offer expires Dec 31 2017. Skills Lab: Lindsey planned to do this fun skills lab giving all kinds of pointers on learning to cable for the first time. It’s nowhere near as hard as she thought it would be so the list is going to shorter than anticipated, but here it is: 1. It’s not hard, just drive in and try it! In a class or with the help of youtube. 2. You do need patience and time. The first row or set that you do is going to take so much longer than you think. 3. I recommend metal needles if you are a tight knitter at all, I worry for my wooden Chiaogoo ones with every cable. 4. I also recommend getting a cable needle the same size or slightly bigger than the needles you are using. It keeps the stitches tight and secure on the needle. 5. Take breaks if needed, it can be effort and concentration intensive. 6. And seriously, just do it. We talk about this all the time. Most of our major stumbling blocks are not skill based, but mental. This is not hard, it just takes time. A Review or Two: Kate is reviewing her Next Step Wheel Class @ Gemini Fibre Kate enjoyed her previous course Gemini Fibre, so this one was highly anticipated. Crafting With Kids: Lindsey and Miss O tackle some late season Christmas cards for upcoming family events. It’s a fun endeavour in colouring, gluing, and stickering blank cards to turn them into Christmas masterpieces. Lindsey discusses how and why Miss O mixes up Michael’s and the dollar store. Events Spotlight: Kate discusses starting up a brand spanking new Yarn & Fibre Festival in Fenelon Falls, ON in June! Gifts for Makers - Episode 18
She Can Make – Show Notes Episode 18 This episode is brought to you by Plum Deluxe. Today’s segments include: In the Workroom Alterations Gifts for Makers A Review or Two Crafting with Kids Event Spotlight   Grab a cup of tea, make yourself comfortable and let’s start making. Thank you so much for joining us! In the Workroom: Kate has finished the collar and ‘button bands’ on the Dark & Stormy sweater, she tried it on and is super happy with the fit.  She has kinda, sorta, maybe started working on the sleeves. The first of Kate’s new babies in the family have arrived.  Yay!  Now that she knows the bundle of joy is a girl, Kate is all set to knit all the girly things.  Now she is not so patiently waiting for baby number two, which will make her an Aunt! Kate has a couple pairs of socks in the works.  She is continuing work on her Breakwater socks.  Kate is also knitting herself a pair of Christmas socks using Regia Pairfect Design Line.  You must see them…  Lindsey has finished Miss O’s mittens, and yes, she put a string on them.  She loves them a lot! Lindsey also attended her first cable class, and it turned out much easier than she anticipated.  The pattern has some odd notations, but the teacher was awesome. Alterations:  Lindsey lost a cheap set of 12-inch circulars to the evil kitten.  Kate discusses her trouble finding the right flannel for backing a quilt she is working.  Lindsey offers a few suggestions, but more are welcome. And Now a Word from Our Sponsors:  Love trying new teas?  Treat yourself to a Plum Deluxe tea subscription.  Starting only $10/month in the US and $17 for Canada, you'll receive a hand blended, all-organic, loose leaf tea thoughtfully chosen for the season.  Tea club members also enjoy special benefits like free shipping on all purchases, discounts (you get 20% off your first purchase after you join), gift swaps, and access to a supportive community.  Caffeine-free, allergy friendly options available. A tea subscription makes a fantastic gift at a variety of budgets that keeps on giving!  Plum Deluxe also has a delightful selection of a la carte teas and artisan teaware in their online shop. Visit plumdeluxe.com and explore. Signup for a recurring subscription or buy a 6/9/12 month gift subscription and gent one month free - just put the words "Shecanmake Bonus Month” in the "how did you hear about us box".  Month will be added when your order is processed.  Offer expires Dec 31, 2017.   Gifts for Makers, Week 1: Kate gives you a few different ideas for gifts for the other makers in your life.   Think about how something you make can intersect with a need for the makers you know. We are makers ourselves, so we totally appreciate hand made items. In the past I’ve spun wool for my mom, because she doesn’t spin but she does knit up a storm.  I’ve knit her socks, because she knits like crazy but almost never knits socks. If you sew and know knitters, consider sewing project bags and needle / hook rolls etc. Pay attention to that maker’s pain points.  For Lindsey, for example, I know she doesn’t love the way her yarn rolls around and she’s been on the hunt for a yarn bowl, so I might see if I can find a beautiful hand made one that I think she would like and have that sent her way. Take note of which packages arrive at the door on a regular basis. I order from amazon for basically everything. I get lots of books on dying and spinning and fleece, and a gift card for amazon would never go amiss, or for my local yarn shop?  Or even for Ravelry I buy patterns like they’re going to cease to be available, so a gift card for Ravelry would be amazing as well. Think about something that they enjoy doing and find a way for it to be more beautiful.  Example: An orifice hook is a terribly low-tech item, which is completely necessary for spinning. They are usually functional, and form doesn’t come into consideration, but there are some BEAUTIFUL handmade ones available on Esty to suit a variety of tastes. Find one item that would gussy up your makers kit, and splurge a little on something they wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves. Swing by your maker’s favorite local shop, and see what they’ve been eyeing up but haven’t sprung for. Those lovely knitting / sewing / spinning shop folks usually have a pretty good idea of what would be an awesome treat for a maker that is a regular. A Review or Two: Lindsey reviews some KnitPicks gadgets from her early Black Friday shopping. Wooden yarn bowl - Black Mango Yarn Bowl with Holes Sheep measuring tape Yarn cutter keychain Crafting with Kids: Lindsey has been feeling a bit of a sewing bug lately as she tries to finish up a few knitting projects.  Miss O has also expressed a clear desire to be done with the yarn and move onto the fabric.  So, while Lindsey was doing some mundane sewing repairs Miss O charged ahead with her scrap sewing skills like a champ!  Lindsey discusses how she has improved and evolved in the few months since she first tried the machine.  Miss O might also be angling for her own fabric stash. Events Spotlight:  Kate is involved with a team of lovely ladies who are starting up a brand spanking new Yarn & Fibre Festival in Fenelon Falls, ON this June! We’ve started preparations to bring you the Kawartha Yarn & Fibre festival, and right now the call for vendors is out. If you’re a small to medium sized business interested in vending @ the festival in early June in Ontario, please reach out to us at kawarthayff@gmail.com to get on the vendor list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you to our sponsor Plum Deluxe for helping to make the show possible. In The Workroom: Kate is continuing work on her Dark and Stormy sweater. Finished the short rows for the collar and working on the button bands now. Lindsey is trying to knit mittens for Miss O using a worsted weight Rhichard Devrieze yarn, the colour is called seaside. Someone is anxious for these to be finished.
Alterations: Lindsey discusses some of the hiccups she has run into starting Miss O’s mittens. There have been a few restarts and some pattern mixing and matching. Kate discusses working on her second Breakwater sock, now that she knows it fits, it is destined for the Christmas basket. Alterations: Lindsey discusses the problems she runs into with her cabled hat. She started out on square needles, but can only find round DPNs for finishing the hat. Switching near the top of the hat will leave a distinct line, but she may have a solution! Lindsey also discusses the need for better yarn storage or the ability to knit faster after her shopping excursions recently with Kate. Kate has her Dark and Stormy sweater back on the needles, and she has a plan for getting it finished. If it doesn’t work this time Lindsey might get a new sweater! Skills Labs: Why we make homemade gifts: 1. It can be cost effective/Use up your stash. 2. It’s more personal or can be personalized. 3. It’s more meaningful/It may be a keepsake. 4. But why are the tarts gone? - Episode 14
She Can Make – Episode 14 Show Notes Today’s segments include: • In the Workroom • Alterations • Skills Lab • A Review or Two • Events Spotlight Thank you so much for joining us! Grab a cup of tea, make yourself comfortable and let’s start making. In The Workroom: Lindsey is still working on her husband’s birthday socks… yes, his birthday has passed. She has caved and let him try the first one on, so they are no longer a surprise. Lindsey also discusses how she plans to avoid second sock syndrome. Lindsey discusses signing up for a cable knitting class at her local store. She is knitting the Winter Cable Hat by Annanitato Lolo. It’s knit with 3.5mm needles and bulky yarn. She is using Diamond Luxury Traditional Chunky in a light teal colour. Kate is spending most of her time spinning, she has finished her second Sox in a Box from Fullen Woolens. She is also working on a box of Mystery Protein Fiber from Wellington Fiber. Kate is also working on one of five pairs of Christmas socks she has planned. She is ¾ of the way through the Breakwater Socks by Julia Swart, she is using Diamond Luxury Soxy Lady in Electric Avenue. Kate is happy that it has a great gauge on 2.75mm needles. Alterations: Lindsey is disappointed she didn’t get her husband’s socks done by his birthday. On the plus side she is happy that she spent a couple days at Kate’s place recently, which means lots of time knitting, spinning, and chatting together. This is not something that happens very often. Kate found a solution for her plying problem that she discussed last week. She spun two different lengths that needed to be plied together, find out the ingenious solution she found. Skills Lab: Wool Wash Take 2! Instructions from Deb Robson @ The Independant Stitch http://independentstitch.typepad.com/the_independent_stitch/2013/07/one-way-to-wash-fleeces-part-1-getting-ready.html Items Kate used: • Unicorn Power Scour • Mesh laundry bags • Salad spinner • Plastic basins • A sheet or two The Basic Steps: 1. Toss the fleece into a laundry bag. Whatever will fit without having to compress it to get it in. I used XL bags and got about 1.5 - 2 lbs of dirty fleece into each bag. 2. Fill your sink with cool water. Once the sink is full, toss the fleece on top and walk away for half an hour or so. You will come back to something that looks like tea, and would make an excellent fertilizer for your garden. If this is your plan, lift your fleece out gently and place in some sort of storage basin, and siphon or ladle out the water and take it to the nearest garden and please enjoy your excellent veggies and flowers! 3. Go back, pull the plug, let all the water run out, lift the fleece into a plastic storage basin for a moment, refill the sink with cool water, pop the fleece back in being a little more careful not to agitate at this point. Let it rest for approximately 1 episode of Criminal Minds or up to one season if you’re binge watching and fleece washing. I left two of my dirtier bits of fleece overnight and it worked quite well. 4. Drain the water again, moving the fleece out to the storage basin while you refill the sink with the hottest tap water you can muster, and two capfuls of Unicorn Clean Power scour. 5. Again, re-insert the fleece into the water, let rest for 20-30 minutes. This time, you don’t want to forget about it and let it cool so put on an episode of Big Bang or set your timer, whichever works for you. 6.
