Stay the F@!# Home With… Danielle Mandella
Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Danielle Mandella is staying the fuck home. Danielle Mandella is a comedian living with Cystic Fibrosis. Mandella routinely posts thoughtful and insightful insights about living her life with CF. Additionally, she was the recipient of a double lung over 15 years ago. Danielle was an early fan of the STAB podcast. She quickly found her way into contributing to the podcast as a guest. Several years later, when the STAB Comedy Theater opened, she helped with running the club. She eventually stepped down to take better care of her health. I asked to Danielle to be the final guest of the Stay the Fuck Home With… series because I want people to hear from someone who has a compromised immune system. She recommends going to the UCSF Health website to learn more about who is at greater risk of COVID-19 by clicking here. STAB Comedy Theater is also live-streaming a variety of performance, which you can see by clicking here. Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Debbie Chang and Tanya Azar are staying the fuck home. Debbie and Tanya are the co-owners of Kasbah Lounge, on J St. between 21st and 22nd St. The duo took ownership of the restaurant in 2016 after working in the restaurant for several years. They offer delicious food options with “classic Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors” and a wide array of unique and delicious drink options on their menu. While the duo have opted to remained closed during the shelter-in-place order for the safety of the public and their staff, the restaurant has gift cards available for purchase. Please consider purchasing one clicking here. You’ll be happy you did when they re-open Kasbah Lounge. One last thing. This will likely be the last episode Stay the F@!# Home With… I’ve been lucky enough to pick up some small work here and there over the next few weeks (I’m a freelance podcast producer) and because of that, I won’t be able to continue this series. Lopez is a member of the Anti-Cooperation League, the flagship show for the venue. In addition to ACL, she performs Lady Business, Masters of Rap Improv, and co-leads POC Improv Space. Stay the F@!# Home With… Rene Jacques and Cam Villa
Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Rene Jacques and Cam Villa are staying the fuck home. Rene Jacques and Cam Villa are the founders of are the founders of Golden Bay Mortgage Group. Both Cam and Rene have worked in the mortgage industry since the early 2000s. I invited them to be guests on the podcast because of their knowledge and experience in the mortgage industry. Because of the uncertainty many of us are experiencing around income, I thought they would be a great resource for anyone that has questions about their mortgage or if they’re thinking of buying a home. In addition to being business owners, both are involved in the community of Sacramento. Cam and I both live in the Colonial Heights neighborhood and became friends after meeting at a community event he started, the Colonial Heights Kickball League. Cam created the league to bring our neighborhood together, which was wildly successful for the community. Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Tina Reynolds is staying the fuck home. Tina Reynolds is the founder of Uptown Studios. She is such a positive and joyful person to be around. In addition to being the Chief Juggler at Uptown Studios, Tina is a community leader and public speaker. We previously spoke back in Episode 77. Stay the F@!# Home With… Jared Konopitski
Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Jared Konopitski is staying the fuck home. I’m closing out this week by speaking with Jared Konopitski, one of my favorite people to chat with in the entire world. He was a guest on Episode 194. Furthermore, Konopitski’s art has been on display both locally, like the annual KVIE Art Auction, and across the globe. His art is colorful, bright, playful, and has a childlike wonder without being childish. As a result of artistic eye, his art is loved by people of all ages. Thanks for listening! Stay the F@!# Home With… Emily Perez
Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Emily Perez is staying the fuck home. For this episode I wanted to chat with someone from the world of the performing arts. Sacramento has a robust performing arts scene, from the Music Circus to the B Street Theater at The Sofia to the Empire Arts Collective. Perez, along with Jessilee Windhaus, co-founded Empire Arts Collective in 2015. Additionally, Emily Perez is a music teacher. Are you staying the fuck home? Why not?! Liv Moe is staying the fuck home. For this episode I wanted to chat with someone in the world of art. Moe is the Founding Director of Verge Center for the Arts. Verge Center for the Arts plays a crucial role in the art scene in Sacramento. Verge advocates for the arts, provides facilities for artists-in-residence, and provide art classes for people of all ages. Stay the F@!# Home With… Danny Reynoso
Hi. The podcast ended in October of 2019. I had every intention of that being the end of it. However, everything changed with the shelter-in-place rule. So many in our community are now struggling to find their footing in our new reality. So why am I bringing the podcast back? I’ve been asked in person and online if the show would return during this difficult time. I was hesitant to do that, largely because I wasn’t sure what the podcast could offer during this time. The podcast was always so… idiosyncratic and loose. Do we need that now? But then I thought, this podcast can serve as a way for us to check in on our community leaders, business owners, freelancers, comics, and others to get words of encouragement and see how we can all help each other. Of course, it will still be idiosyncratic and loose. So, please join me as I checking in with Sacramento during this strange time in our city. For this episode I wanted to chat with someone working in the field of education. With that in mind, I decided to check in with Danny Reynoso. In addition to being an educator, Danny Reynoso is a punk rock musician and performer. He is in The Moans and was in the The Secretions. Thanks for listening!   Featured music “Serious Talk Theme Song” by Leah and Nicole “Hungaria” by Latché Swing “Serious Talk Theme Song (Quick Version)” by Leah and Nicole The post Stay the F@!# Home With… Danny Reynoso appeared first on Serious Talk. Stay the F@!# Home With… Johnny Taylor
Hi. The podcast ended in October of 2019. I had every intention of that being the end of it. However, everything changed with the shelter-in-place rule. So many in our community are now struggling to find their footing in our new reality. So why am I bringing the podcast back? The podcast was always so… idiosyncratic and loose. Do we need that now? But then I thought, this podcast can serve as a way for us to check in on our community leaders, business owners, freelancers, comics, and others to get words of encouragement and see how we can all help each other. Of course, it will still be idiosyncratic and loose. So, please join me as I checking in with Sacramento during this strange time in our city. This first person I thought to chat with is Comedian Johnny Taylor . Taylor calls Sacramento home but travels the nation performing comedy. He’s one of my favorite comics and in my Top 5 of people to chat with on this show and in real life. As a stand-up comic who tours, the shelter-in-place order has stopped his source of income and took away the thing he needs the most to do what he does: audiences. Thanks for listening! Johnny Taylor, shirtless, eating Pringles.     Featured music “Serious Talk Theme Song” by Leah and Nicole “Hungaria” by Latché Swing “Serious Talk Theme Song (Quick Version)” by Leah and Nicole The post Stay the F@!# Home With… Johnny Taylor appeared first on Serious Talk. The End
Episode 200: The End We have come to the end of Serious Talk. Seriously. Like Baby’s unforgettable summer in the Catskills of 1963, (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life and I owe it all to you. The Fans To everyone who listened to the podcast: Thank you. Sincerely, thank you. It’s been an honor to be allowed into your lives for nearly six years. When I started this podcast, I did not think it would ever gain an audience. In spite of the times I didn’t record episodes correctly or when I went from weekly episodes to a 25-episode season, and even when I was burdened with a job that was burning me out and gave me a bitter aspect on life and this podcast, the show somehow found an audience that kept growing. The response to the podcast gave me the self-confidence to pursue podcasting as a career. I decided to take a leap of faith that I could make an income from helping other people make their own podcasts. So for better or worse, my current life is all your fault! If you love comic books and haven’t tired of me yet, I’ll continue to co-host Graphic Novel Explorers Club. The Guests I want to say thank you to all of my guests (especially the elite club whose episodes I never posted — sorry). My invitations to be on the show were quite short. The usual question I got when I asked someone to be on the podcast went something like this: “What are we going to talk about?” My common response was, “I don’t know, but don’t worry. It’s my job to keep the conversation moving. I’ll make sure we have fun.” It’s amazing how many people were up for something as loose as Serious Talk. Seriously. My gratitude to everyone that appeared on the show cannot be expressed. Thank you for your time and willingness to participate in this experiment with me. What a blast I had chatting with each of you. The Comedians Sacramento has an outstanding comedy scene. If you doubt me, check out any of the comedians I’ve interviewed during six seasons of this show. Be thankful we have comics that are brave enough and crazy enough to do what they do and for doing it here in Sacramento. Seriously, you’ll be doing yourself a favor. It’s only a matter a of time before Sacramento gets a well-deserved reputation as a place with a deep well of comedic talent. My Friends I’ll continue by saying thank you to my friends for their support. How lucky am I that my friends are some of the funniest, most decent, and thoughtful people living in Sacramento? A special thanks to the friends I’ve made through podcasting, or existing friendships that grew stronger because of podcasting. This includes Elizabeth & Matthew, Siino, Kempa, Heather Smith, Dennis “Super” Supachana, Frankie Preziosi, Brian McComas, CJ & BK, Chris and Ricky, Hagel, Daniel & Corky, Allison Joy, and Comedian Ben Rice. Additional thanks to Leah and Nicole for the theme songs! Please accept my apology if I left you off of the list. An extra-special thank you goes out to Siino for recording this final episode with me! I also owe a debt of gratitude to Isaac Gonzales for approaching me about starting a podcast all those years ago (R.I.P. No Nipples on the Suit). My Family My family and I in Ireland, May of 2019 Now on to my sister, my dad, and Sue. Some of us don’t get to see others as much as we would like to, but when we do, it’s like there was no gap in time at all. We laugh so much whenever we are around each other and I appreciate that most of all. I love you all! Oi-cha-choi-choi! Finally, Sasha. The Official Girlfriend of the Podcast. You never bat an eyelash when I talk about any hair-brained idea I have. You challenge me to make them better and, just as important, you fully encourage me to pursue them. You are sweet, funny, engaged, and incredibly smart, all while consistently having the coldest hands of anyone I ever met. This podcast, my business, and the life we share are all possible because of you. Especially for all of those times you willingly banished yourself to our bedroom back when I recorded in our house. Thank you for your love, patience, and belief in me. I love you so! The End P.S. How could I forget my dumb dogs?! They’re pretty great, as far as dogs go. Now it really is The End. Episode 199 – Searching for Hope: Homelessness
Episode 199 focuses on the documentary Searching for Hope: Homelessness. The documentary will debut Monday, November 25 at 7 P.M. on KVIE. In this episode, Johnny chats with Director of Photography for KVIE, Martin Christian. Joining Christian is Dion Dwyer, Public Space Services Director for Downtown Sacramento Partnership. Searching for Hope: Homelessness “investigates this growing humanitarian crisis while discovering programs making a difference.” The trio talk about how much (or little) influence the ever changing political landscape of homelessness influenced the film’s structure; why Producer Joyce Mitchell chose to focus on Sacramento instead of the rest of California; and which individual worked to get the documentary into production. During the episode we learn what Navigators do. Additionally, we find out how they helped the production team earn the trust of the people they filmed. Further more, Dion shares some shocking statistics connected to people dealing with homelessness in the Sacramento area. The episodes continues with how people who worked and saved their entire lives may end up suffering from homelessness once they retire. And, finally, the story in the documentary that most touched Martin. All photos taken from “Searching for Hope: Homelessness”, courtesy of Martin Christian. Thank you for listening, Listeners, to my conversation with Martin Christian and Dion Dwyer. Be sure to watch Searching for Hope: Homelessness when it airs on KVIE on Monday, November 25, 2019. Episode 197: Bambi Vegan Tacos
The founders of Bambi Vegan Tacos (Ruben, Liz, and Chad) stopped by for Episode 197. Ruben and Chad handle the food side of the business while Liz handles more of the logistics.
