SFS 053: 5 Reasons It’s So Hard to Pursue Things You Really Want (and the Solution)
When there's something you really want, it can sometimes be the hardest thing to pursue. It might be a dream career, a person you're wildly attracted to or excellent health, but you find yourself not going after it and even pushing it away or avoiding it. Unfortunately, this happens to many people, and they end up living without ever pursuing the things they really wanted. This is tragic, because (in my view) the purpose of life is to go after and achieve your dreams. This came up for me recently as I considered starting a new business, one that’s completely aligned with the work I’ve always wanted to do. And I resisted. So I thought about what was going on. I’ve seen this before with other people and with many of my clients. I identified 5 reasons why it’s so hard to pursue things you really want, and provide actionable tips on how to overcome these roadblocks so you can pursue your dreams. Episode highlights: Why the fear of failure is greatest with things most important to you How the negative ways we interpret failure stop us The one fear that stops many people (and they don't even know it's happening) Techniques for getting past your fear The many rewards of taking risks to go after what you want Quote by Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover." Don't Miss a Thing Get every episode automatically! Share the Value If you're enjoying the show, please rate it on iTunes and write a brief review. SFS 044: Shark Tank’s Daymond John Says Being Selfish is a Key to Success
It's rare to hear selfishness portrayed in the media positively, especially from well-known entrepreneurs. In an interview on CNBC, Shark Tank entrepreneur and founder of FUBU Daymond John says that the way high-profile people "maximize" their days is that, "They're selfish." John says: "We've given up our power to everybody. We wake up in the morning, answer a million emails with everybody's problems, look on social media; everybody's doing better than us. Get and talk to the kids for a second, 'I'll talk to you later,' and you never see your kids because you didn't schedule them on a list to be with your family, you scheduled to be in meetings." I admire John for saying this, as it goes against the grain to urge people to be selfish. We break down what he says and I add my take on it. Episode highlights: Why you can't succeed (for the long-term) without being selfish I share how it's still hard sometimes for me to say "no" and take care of myself Being selfish (in the rational way) is HARD (but the rewards are HUGE) Make sure you are setting "appointments" with people you love Don't Miss a Thing Get every episode automatically! SFS 042: Being SELFISH With Your Time
Time is your most precious commodity as an entrepreneur. If you don't protect it, it will be devoured by unimportant activities and relationships that suck your energy and ability to build and enjoy the life you desire. Therefore it's crucial you're SELFISH with your time. The reason I chose this topic today is that I've decided to go back to doing 1 podcast episode per week instead of 3. It's been fun putting out more content, but I didn't realize how much time it would require. I decided I had to be selfish with my time to honor the other values in my life (projects, business, self-care) and still create valuable content. I'm still committed to the podcast. In fact, we have several cool interviews with entrepreneurs, as well as solo episodes, that will be released in the coming weeks! SFS 041: The Power of CLARITY in Your Business Purpose
Being rationally selfish means figuring out what you want, and then going after it to create a flourishing life. To do that effectively, you have to be CLEAR about what you want. Crystal clear. The human mind is extremely powerful and can guide you to almost anything you want. But it can only do what you tell it to do. If you give it vague, fuzzy orders, it will create vague, fuzzy directions, and your chances of getting what you want will greatly diminish or be impossible. The key to getting what you want in your business is being extremely clear about what you want. That's exactly what I teach you how to do in today's episode.
