Marcel Kuijsten - Julian Jaynes and the Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind
( 🎧 &"introspectacles" recommended 4 optimal immersion & enjoyment ) There are few words in circulation with as many disparate & ill-defined interpretations as “consciousness” & no one, as far as I’m concerned, has narrowed down a more concise definition thanJulian Jaynes in his 📖 The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Marcel Kuijsten founded the Julian Jaynes Society & has, along w a range of experts in various disciplines, continued to distribute, distill, explain, & expand upon Jaynes’ work through a number of publications that clarify the theory, dispel misconceptions, & present a growing body of evidence to support it. His latest 📖 is titled Conversations on Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind. All of this complex material is meticulously researched & articulated, & in this episode Marcel & I do our best to navigate & outline the theory’s various facets & examine its implications. During the intro I relay the story of my time “playing dead for a living” on the set of Westworld, a show about a themepark of AI-cowboys-gone-wild, which heavily leans on Jaynes’ theory to fulfill its narrative arc. JF Martel - Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment )) “Art is the only truly effective means we have of engaging, in a communal context, the psyche on its own terms,” writes jF Martel, the co-host of the Weird Studies podcast and the author of the brilliant book “Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artifice”, in which he distills a clear, working definition of art, in relation to its antithesis, artifice. Treating the episode as a book report, we use the philosophy put forth in its pages as a springboard to examine the implications of ai-generated images, and the potential consequences of outsourcing one’s intuitive sensibilities to a dreaming machine. Jake Kobrin - Interfacial Magick
(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment )) Proficient in both digital & traditional media, Jake is one of the few formally trained visionary artists. I was his guest on ep.10 of The Quarantine Sessions, a podcast he began hosting at the onset of the pandemic. Nowadays he sporadically casts pods as solo spells, wherein he discusses his study & practice of Magick. Alongside a curated pantheon of experts and professionals Jake also facilitates Online workshops & in-person retreats that focus on the intersection of art, mindfulness, & the western esoteric tradition. We talk about his recent ventures into co-creating w/ Midjourney, where text-prompted spells generate AI-art. We relate the process to divinatory practices, & consider that perhaps egregorial entities are the mind’s own AI agencies. We also touch upon his rarely discussed experience w/ hook suspension. Though it’s not his main avenue of expression, Jake also plays music, & I included one of his piano compositions in the intro to showcase the scope of his multivalent talent. Dave Green - A Draw-Bridge Between (The Waking State & The Lucid Dream)
(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment )) Dave Green’s simple line drawings come across as iconographic glyphs. These drawings are recreations, upon waking, of drawings he created in a lucid dream state. Lately he has been experimenting with giving his pen & paper to other people in his dreams to see what they create. His art has been featured in BBC Science Focus and DreamTime magazine. He has lectured about his work at the Tate Modern & is the subject of an upcoming documentary by the World Science Festival. We talk about dream practices, artful means of building bridges between worlds, & creating one’s own custom, divinatory lexicon through which to smuggle objects across the borders of waking & dream. Paradise Has Parasites (Solo Pod)
(( headphones recommended )) Time for a solo pod! In the spirit of modular storytelling this episode offers five written/spoken/sound-scaped vignettes. All the stories are based in the Ayahuasca experience, sourced from my private stash. Not unlike an audiobook, the dark, poetic prose intends to take the audience on an immersive listening experience, enchanting them into an altered state. The main tale takes place at the intersection of parapsychology and parasitology, and revolves around my visionary encounter with a parasite who, during a 2014 sojourn in the Peruvian amazon, held my body and mind hostage. The segments are tentatively titled as follows: Sharing Circle The Man In The Jungle The Secret Cannot Be Contained In The Beginning Was The Shhh... Colonel Carapace: in Cherished Memory of a Perished Parasite Extended shownotes (artwork/writings/resources): https://www.patreon.com/posts/64830146 a special thanks to Mike Brancatelli of Mike-a-delic (my guest in ep 10) for lending his voice talent in servive of this episode's intro, where he portrays Erik Davis (my guest in ep13) NEW: My latest essay: Dreamtime Screentime: Pareidolic Deities & Dead Channels My new film San Pedro Buy my book The He & The She Of It Support SPAOP: -Subscribe -Share -Rate (*****) -Review -patreonize us (http://www.patreon.com/voiddenizen) -donate: Venmo (@voiddenizen) or paypal (snailconvention@gmail.com) The Ungoogleable Michaelangelo: www.theungoogleable.com IG: void_denizen YT, Twitter, TikTok, etc: https://Linktr.ee/void_denizen All music by The Ungoogleable except Whim & Will, music byTravis Puntarelli (IG: @balladir)

Kent Osborn - Sonic Space Craft
(( headphones recommended )) Aside from facilitating plant medicine ceremonies & vending shamanic paraphernalia, Kent Osborn is also a painter & writer. He published a book of his Ayahuasca-inspired, visionary art called InKENTations, & wrote Shinan, which chronicles the different "kené"--the circuitous designs distinct to the Shipibo tribe of the Ucayali region of Peru. The patterns of the Kené are inspired by the shamans' icaros (healing songs). This episode consists of a conversation I recorded in 2014, in San Fancisco, when Kent returned from his first Shipibo-flavored Ayahuasca ceremony in Lima. He passionately and humorously shares an experience he had with a powerful shaman, wherein he crafted objects w/ his voice & ecountered ancestral spirits. I counter his wonder-filled account w/ a tale of one of my own early Aya experiences, in which the voice also played a central role in navigating & crafting space. Extended shownotes includes Kent's art & a piece of writing called "Icaro Casino", a case study, complimentary to ep 17, that dissects the assumptions behind our beliefs & the origins of chance, gambling, & divination. Eric Wargo - The Preciousness of the Prescient Present
((( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))) I’d describe Eric Wargo as an oneiric archeologist. He’s the author of “Time Loops: Retrocausation, Precognition, and The Unconscious” as well as a recent handbook for interpreting message from the future received in dreams called “Precognitive Dreamwork and the Long Self.” I resonate with the ideas he puts forth so much that I’ve purchased the book seven times! We talk about the physical locale of the collective unconscious, personification and encryption in dream states, time travel, the prophetic nature of creativity, and more. I also get a chance to relay a few pertinent instances of precognition and time loops from my own life. Gib Strange - Zeitgeist Busters
((headphones recommended for an optimal listening experience)) Gib Strange is a writer of post-ironic, meta-modern fiction. His witty work is filled w/ carefully balanced, tessellated paradoxes & insightful observations. He released parts of his novel, Notes From The Uncanny Valley, as an audiobook-disguised-as-podcast. It’s a "coming-of-information-age" kinda tale, permeated by a feeling of isolation & a sense of camaraderie w/ information itself. In it the narrator’s voice drifts dreamily on a bed of ambient sound like a ghostly tour guide highlighting the remains of the real as they fade into shades of virtuality. For me Gib’s writings condition a particular way of thinking, feeling, & seeing--aweaving, really--that may inspire the reader to want to write as well, to cast out their perceptual nets & take note of patterns in the world around them, in hopes of reeling in some detectable imprints of meaning. We struggled thru some techNickle diFickleties that forced us to try out all the different recording platforms in existence. Very fitting for the kind of technallergic topics we explored. As a result the conversation is divided into 3 parts & interspliced w/ segments from Gib’s audiolized narrative. Unfortunately the first 1/2 hour of our conversation has some crippled, crackly audio bits, like gristle for the ears, but it’s not too bad, so just spit em out, ok? ((((headphones recommended for an optimal listening experience)))) Jennifer Sodini is the author of "the Amenti Oracle: Feather Heart Deck and Guidebook" and "Everyday Amenti". She's the host of the "Radio Amenti" podcast, and has recently contributed writings to Rolling Stone magazine. She's also the social media mogul who founded the platform Evolve & Ascend, which received an overhaul just before we recorded this conversation in early January 2021, in the wake of the "LARPers Take Congress" episode of American Politics. Anthony Peake - Reincantations (Life After Life Afterlife)
(((Headphones recommended for optimal enjoyment))) Anthony Peake is the author of 11 books. Their names should clue you in to the kind of subject matter that saturates his research. His titles include Is There Life After Death: The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die,The Daemon: A Guide To Your Extraordinary Secret Self, The Hidden Universe,The Out Of Body Experience, The Infinite Mindfield, Philip K. Dick: The Man Who Remembered The Future, Opening The Doors of Perception, The Labyrinth of Time, & others. He is currently working on his 12th volume, which bears the title of the investigative theory he’s been outlining in the aforementioned labyrinth of tomes: Cheating The Ferryman: Welcome to the Youniverse. We get the chance to dig deep & excavate the philosophical/practical applications of this theory, which proposes that death is a scientific impossibility, & that we relive & rewrite the same life over & over in a fully immersive, brain-generated, virtual-reality life review. Each cycle is, in effect, Your Life: the Daemonic Director’s Cut. Before we delve into the conversation I relay a detailed, soundscaped entheogenic experience, in which I experienced profound insights that exemplify many facets of what Anthony’s vision proposes. Erik Davis - GhostWriting at the Crossroads
(((Headphones MANDATORY for optimal enjoyment))) After ep. 6 w/ Stuart Davis & his mantic antics, you probably thought you’d never encounter another esoteric Davis on this show. But you were wrong because the esoteric Erik Davis is in the (haunted) house! Erik is a prolific writer, speaker, cultural critic & social analyst, best known for his books TechGnosis, High Weirdness, Nomad Codes, and Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV. He conducted Terence Mckenna’s final interview, and was featured in the documentary DMT: The Spirit Molecule as well the recent A Glitch In The Matrix. Equipped with an esemplastic scholastic mind, and a creative, psychedelic soul, he walks a tightrope between the academic and the daemonic. This episode will be especially interesting for our fellow word-workers, but even if you don’t identify as a writer, we all, inevitably, work with words, whether we want to or not. It’s too late in the game to turn back, go mute, or become illiterate (especially YOU, who are at this very moment reviving my phantom voice by scanning these marks with your eyes). This episode is a portrait of a writer at the crossroads, adapting to a changing media landscape, and the shifting mindfield that comes with it. Ramin Nazer - DeepFake BlackFace
(((Headphones MANDATORY for optimal enjoyment))) Everybody loves Ramin. In my humble o’pineal, his creations deserve a Best Of The Web award. Why can’t YOU be more like Ramin? You’ve seen him tell an animated tale of timeline confusion on his way back from Dee EmTeeness on “Tales From The Trip” (DMTv). You’re already familiar with his podcast the Rainbow Brainskull Hour, and OF COURSE you know his colorful artworks, about which you‘ll hear me literally (literally) sing their praises during the intro. I remind him of Robin Williams, and I think he’s a real life Aladdin (probably just because he’s of Persian persuasion, and I like to genieralize). Whenever we, infinity’s mercurial PR men, rub our magic lamps together, our light-bulbed brain-noodles tend to whackadoodle all over the place, because neither of us are “straight men” (in the comedic sense--NO HOMO!) (except Sapiens). (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) In effect this is probably the least disciplined SPAOP conversation exploration to date. (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) We invite you to befriend what offends you, and to meet us at the TRIGGER WARNING sign on the intersection of irreverance and revelation, in the hope that this episode will make you “trigger happy”. Dave Oshana - The BloodsDream of the Ancestors
(((Headphones recommended for optimal enjoyment))) In the year 2000 Dave became enlightened. Notice what comes up at the mention of the e-word. R u triggered? Curious? Eye-rolling? Set aside any preconceived notions U might have about enlightenment, or what an enlightened person might be like. The way Dave describes it is that he simply woke up one morning & no longer felt like Dave, like the Dave he had, up to that moment, identified as. He woke up from Dave, and found himself to be a Whole Host of Sensations (WHoS Dave?) just… like… an embodied being with lots of bodily sensations that communicated to "him" from the depths of that being. There was a light too, though he didn’t conceptualize it. Several months later he began using the term “transmission” to help explain the phenomena that occurred when others had contact w/ him. He now shares the “Enlightenment Transmission” w/ people around the world, inspiring them to be their authentic selves. U may have heard about Dave Oshana on ep 7. Mike Brancatelli - The TricksterEquality of InnerSpace
(((Headphones recommended for optimal enjoyment))) Mike is the host of the MikeAdelic Podcast. He also does the best Alan Watts impression around, which I incorporated into this episode's intro! We talk about Mike’s recent venture into psilocyberspace, where he encountered an unspeakable transformational display, a "server farm", dazzling in its trickstery quality, and difficult to put one’s finger on. Confronting this innerspace—the life-force perceived beyond thought-forms—prompts one to find new ways to engage and relate with the world and Oneself. Esther Jacobs - Life in Permanent Beta
(((Headphones recommended for optimal enjoyment))) Esther Jacobs is an intrepid, location-independent entrepreneur. She's traveled to over 100 countries, speaks 7 languages, was "fired" from her country, and feels at home anywhere in the world. She writes books, and teaches others how to write books using her unique reverse writing technique. She was knighted in the Dutch order, and participated in the Dutch version of Survivor. She's also my big sister! Using her life story as our foundation, we talk about creatively overcoming obstacles, energy management, dream guidance, the wisdom & whispers of the body, groupthink vs individualism, control vs. surrender, the difference between travelers & tourists, surreality TV, past lives, and more. Jasun Horsley - Crucial Fictions & Lucid Trauma
Jasun Horsley is a sharp but subtle thinker who describes himself as "an existential detective in chronic confession mode". A prolific writer, he has published countless books, blog posts, & articles. He also hosts The Liminalist podcast, where we did a follow-up conversation. Initially reluctant, a series of uncanny coincidences lured me deeper into his realm, where I discovered a treasure trove of parallel processes, insights, & reflections. Stuart Davis - The Mantic Antics of a Twisted Mystic
Stuart Davis is a multimedia artist w/ a brilliant madcap mind. 10 years ago, while meditating during a fever, he was visited by an 8ft tall mantis entity, opening up a sync-holy vortex & setting a series of synchronicities in motion. These uncanny occurances inspired a forthcoming film called "Mant1s". He's also the creator of a meditative language called IS, published the essay "ET Presence & The Forfeiture of Human Sovereignty", & just launched his podcast Aliens & Artists. We talk about the multiplicity of identity, the influence of non-human intelligences on art (& vice versa), & more. Morgan Sorne - Resourceful Sorcery
(Headphone recommended for optimal immersion in the intro) Morgan Sorne is a multi-dimensional storyteller, visual artist, and composer. We talk about self-mythologization, embodying archetypal charisma, and how taking fictional liberties invites critical thinking and imagination. We gab about the influence of dream, deep listening, and giving voice to forces both earthly and otherworldly. We riff on modular storytelling, world-building, song-drawings, and the "DIY-VR" quality of composing with picture perfect pitch. Oh, and the Florida Man archetype. The Pandemic as Societal Tuning Fork in the Road
(Headphones) I'm taking this opportunity to go solo to share some musings, perspectives, & reflections on the current situation by sending a trippy lil broadcast from my cozy little quarantine to yours. I hope it puts a smile on your face & thoughts in your mind, & that this blend of cosmic, comedic, & contemplative content is a welcome distraction into the heartland. At any rate, you’ll learn a few (bad) words in Dutch. Originally, I just wanted to share a short, sound-scaped story called “The Man in the Jungle” with you (previously only available on my Patreon page) in order to cross-reference my recent appearances on the Third Eye Drops podcast and The Cosmic Nod podcast—both of which were heavily Ayahuasca themed—just like the story. But then the apocalypse started, so I thought why not ponder & pander to the pandemic theme for a few bars, & tie it in to the tale by riffing on the shipibo-placebo model of healing through the imagination. So here’s all of that, & more. You'd be missing out, but if you wanna skip straight to the story—it starts about 21 minutes in. I’ll be back soon with episode 5, featuring multi-dimensional artist & musician Morgan Sorne. I suggest you start familiarizing yourself with his work before the next episode drops, starting here. Until then, stay safe & stay the hell away from each other! ;-) support the show: -Share it! -give us a five star rating -share your pretty words in a review -patreonize us (www.patreon.com/voiddenizen) -donate via Venmo (@voiddenizen) or paypal (snailconvention@gmail.com) Links: -3rd Eye Drops, episode 193 -Cosmic Nod -Talismanic Antibodies Synth/bass on QuaranTune: Travis Puntarelli
