We’re pleased to introduce Poetry Northwest’s new audio podcast series, Seconds. Each episode will feature a second book author in conversation with our Editor, Keetje Kuipers, about their experiences writing and finding a home for their sophomore effort.

As challenging as it can be to bring a first book of poems into the world, the second book presents new hurdles and its publication often comes with a lot less fanfare. Seconds aims to shine a light on authors celebrating the recent publication of a second collection while asking the difficult questions about the journey to the second book, including what it’s like to start over at the first blank page and finding the path to a press willing to take on a second collection.

In this episode, Keetje Kuipers talks with Iain Haley Pollock about his second book, Ghost, Like a Place.

Iain Haley Pollock is the author of two poetry collections, Ghost, Like a Place (Alice James Books, 2018), which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, and Spit Back a Boy, winner of the 2010 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. Individual poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, The Baffler, and The New York Times Magazine. Pollock teaches English at Rye Country Day School in Rye, NY, and is a member of the poetry faculty at the Solstice MFA program of Pine Manor College. He also serves as poetry editor at Solstice Literary Magazine.

Future episodes of Seconds will feature Jennifer Chang, Eduardo Corral, t’ai freedom ford, and Julia Kolchinsky Dasbach.
