STK 011: How to Get A Top Notch Letter of Recommendation
I learned the hard way early in my college career that a letter of recommendation from the wrong person can be devastating to your chances at winning a scholarship. That lesson (http://www.collegemoneyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Screen-Shot-2015-03-04-at-7-1.48.03-PM-300x300.jpg)stuck with me for years. Today's episode focus on how to * Choose the right recommender for the right scholarship * Approach recommenders correctly * Help your recommender with the information to write a top notch letter * How to make sure they will be willing to write more letters down the line. Its another great interview that I know you will be extremely helpful. I hope you like this episode. To help us understand them a bit better we talk to Kaity Ocean, Media Rep and scholarship judge for the Beans for Brains Scholarship. The Beans for Brains Scholarship is unique among scholarships as it focuses on students that Crochet or Knit. The Craft Yarn Council of America estimates their are 53 million Americans who know how to knit or crochet. Thats a massive pool of people and a large section of the population. STK 009: Winning Scholarships Using A Team Approach, w/Monica Matthews
My guest this week is Monica Matthews, and she knows a lot about winning scholarships. Monica is one of those "Super Parents" we all strive to be and epitomizes the TEAM APPROACH to winning scholarships. The host of #CampusChat on twitter and author of the book How To Win College Scholarships, Monica learned about the scholarship game while finding the money for her son to earn his (http://www.collegemoneyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Screen-Shot-2015-02-04-at-9.01.25-AM-300x300.jpg)degree. Several years and over hundred thousand dollars in scholarships after beginning her journey, he has his degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is debt free! I have loved Monica's approach to the Parent/Child scholarships team since I first learned of it, and am doing the same with my own child. Todays interview talks about her experiences and her tips to building a successful scholarship team and knowing when to let the student do the heavy lifting. She can be found on her blog at how2winscholarships.com where she has even more tips and advice. Its another great interview that I know you will be extremely helpful. I hope you like this episode. One quick google search can really confirm who you are and work in your favor, or kill your chances at scholarships, college admissions, internships, or a job. Lets be honest, and remember that nearly 40% (http://www.collegemoneyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Screen-Shot-2015-01-20-at-9.47.31-AM-300x300.jpg)of all scholarships google potential winners to learn more about them. STK 007: Getting Local, Getting Paid: How to Search For Scholarships Locally with Gyan Devi
Searching for Scholarships, is half the battle. You can't apply for what you don't know exists. It is obvious that scholarship searching should be your first step. However, many gravitate to online scholarships search engines such as Cappex, or Zinch, and forget to utilize all of their (http://www.collegemoneyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Screen-Shot-2015-01-08-at-12.17.46-PM-300x300.jpg)resources fully. Which is a shame, because so much money is available locally that is often overlooked and awarded to candidates, sometimes simply out of virtue of having applied, rather than competing against a large pool of candidates. So to help give us some perspective, we talk to Gyan Devi, who we talked with during our second episode STK 002 discussing Big Scholarships and Bigger Myths. We also talk about a couple of scholarships that are still going strong that you can apply for now. Its another great interview that continues my series of episodes on the scholarships search process. I hope you like this episode. Interviews for scholarships, either in the form of Merit Aid or Private Aid, are high risk. It is a process that can be intimidating, scary, and literally leave people in tears (we talk about such a case during this episode). You can make or break your financial future by avoiding thousands in loans via scholarships if you can nail the interview when its part of the award process. I can vouch for how much is at stake when a scholarship interview goes badly, as it cost me thousands in (http://www.collegemoneyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-Shot-2014-12-25-at-6-1.39.39-AM-298x300.jpg)additional aid. STK 003: How To Write A Movie Quality Personal Statement For Scholarships w/ Ethan Sawyer
Scholarships are nothing if not an exercise in communicating a students personality in quick efficient manner. Some scholarships require several essays, others an essay no longer than 200 words. No matter the size or word count however, knowing how to build an original and high quality essay will make all the difference when competing for limited scholarship dollars. I have to be honest and say I have wanted to interview Ethan Sawyer for quite awhile. His website about college admissions essay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_essay) development and the Personal Statement Essay is outstanding. It was both a lesson and reminder of what I did right, and what I did wrong when I was applying for scholarships. This is an interview no parent or student preparing to pay for college should miss.
