VRAW Time-lapse: A real-time race report
Per listener request, listen in as Rick’s virtual Race Across the West, or VRAW, race unfolds in this time-lapse episode. From moments before the start through to the race finish celebration, and including a morning-after update, this episode is a series of rider and crew check-ins to give a behind-the-scenes look at what is involved in a 949-mile ultra-cycling with over 80,000 feet of elevation gain, all from the relative comfort of our basement. While we didn’t have a full crew, vehicles, the elements, other cars/trucks, and many of the typical complications of a race IRL to contend with, you may be surprised at how many similarities there were to the racer and crew experience for a virtual race. A Look into Rick's Plan for the First Ever vRAW
We’re publishing this episode on June 9th – a week before the start of the first ever virtual Race Across the West (vRAW) and virtual Race Across America (vRAAM). While there’s a lot to do to get ready, not nearly like what we and the crew would be doing getting ready to pack up two vans and physically head out to Oceanside, CA on Thursday, 6/12 as originally planned! So, what goes into getting ready to race 945 miles with a little over 83,000 ft. of climbing in 92 hours or less on a bike? On a trainer? In the basement? Listen in as Caryn and Rick discuss the very cool virtual cycling platform FulGaz where all of the magic will happen, training leading up to the race, including some of the amazing test rides in 7 different states, Rick’s race and nutrition plans, Caryn’s role as solo crew and a little about planned in-race social media activities and how to follow the vRAW leaderboard and track Rick from the start to the finish! Michael Davies-Hughes: On what it takes to (almost) finish RAAM
Welcome to the podcast, Michael Davies-Hughes. Our most quotable guest to date, Michael and Rick talk about how Michael caught the ultra-cycling bug and what drove him to give Race Across America a try. Spoiler alert – Michael didn’t quite finish his rookie RAAM attempt, but the lessons he and his crew learned along the way will be useful to anyone attempting their first or thirty-first ultra-event. While he was ready to be back to leverage his lessons in Race Across America 2020, Michael—along with all 2020 RAAM and RAW racers—had to put his plans on hold. Find out his thoughts on this year’s race season, where he’s headed next and his thoughts on the most challenging aspect of racing RAAM.  Following the interview, Caryn and Rick talk through their key takeaways from Michael and how his experiences can inform Rick’s race plans going forward. Anthony Gordon: The ultimate RAAM/RAW pivot – going online!
When life gives you lemons, make a virtual 3,000+ mile bike race out of thin air! As you know by now, the 2020 Race Across America and Race Across the West have been cancelled due to our shared global pandemic, which got Anthony Gordon thinking… As a documentary film-maker who suddenly found himself out of a project (documenting Rupert Guinness’ RAAM attempt), Anthony set to work on creating a virtual race experience for Rupert, other RAAM and RAW racers, and anyone who wants to give this whole ultra-endurance cycling thing a go. Anthony and Rick discuss how Anthony activated his network – and added to it partnering with the RAAM team, FulGaz and more – to put people (back) to work building out routes, registration, tracking, media and all of the components of an online race experience. After Rick’s chat with Anthony, he and Caryn talk about their takeaways from the interview and what this new online option means for Rick’s 2020 RAW plans, and they also begin making plans to have Anthony back on the podcast down the road – yep, he’s that interesting of a guy! Jo Schaalman: Fueling cross-country cycling through conscious nutrition
On this episode, we are thrilled to welcome Boulder, Colorado-based Jo Schaalman, co-founder of The Conscious Company and co-author of The Conscious Cleanse. Jo and Rick talk about Jo’s history as a college athlete and cross-country cyclist and how one of those crossings became the driving force behind her life’s work. In an interview ranging from Jo’s incredible cycling story (it includes lots of pizza and Chinese food) to how she ultimately used food to rebuild her body and life from the ground up (less pizza and Chinese food!), the two discuss how ultra-endurance athletes can gear up their nutrition game. She shares ideas for small (and more significant) changes that cyclists and crew members can make to enhance their ultra-endurance experiences, sustain energy and feel better in challenging conditions. Jo also outlines how the Conscious Cleanse and its fantastic community can provide a great jump start to learning which foods best fuel each person’s unique body. Jo’s engaging style and flexible approach to using nutrition to properly fuel your body make this interview one not to be missed.
