Week 8 Training Recap [Running for Dad #8]

It has been a slog physically and mentally lately, but I’ve still managed to accomplish amazing things. The Results Week 8 goal: Doing more speed than distance work. Race day is only two weeks away, and I’ve already gone a further distance than needed. Week 8 results: Tuesday, September 8: 1.02 miles, 8:56 minutes total, 8:34 minute first mileWednesday, September 9: 3.02 miles, 32:43 minutes total, 9:48 minute first mile, 10:04 minute second mile, 12:30 minute third mileFriday, September 11: 6.08 miles, 1:10:44 minutes total, 10:47 minute first mile, 11:25 minute second mile, 11:54 minute third mile, 11:37 minute fourth mile, 12:02 minute fifth mile, 11:49 minute sixth mile Daily Recap Tuesday, I simply wanted to go for speed and not distance. I broke my previous mile record by several seconds. I was very happy about that. Wednesday, I went for speed again. I had previously done two of three miles in under ten minutes each. This time, I wanted to do that for all three miles. I only did the first mile in under ten minutes, but not the second or third ones. Wednesday’s run was a slog. I don’t know why, so that makes it ok 🙂 Friday, I just went for it. I slowed down the pace and just went for it to see how far I could go. I did six miles, and it didn’t hurt too much. Jogging felt like walking. It was an amazing feeling. Dad’s Corner Here’s a funny story that I told at his funeral: I played on my school basketball team in middle school. In seventh grade, I was on the second string team, also known as the B team. We only had a three game season and lost all three games. The last game we got blown out. The score was about a bajillion to two. After the game, Dad took me home and could see how dejected I looked. He wanted so badly to help me. He told me that he would help me become a better basketball player. He told me that he would help me with my dribbling, passing, shooting, etc. This coming from a man who had even less athletic ability than I did and probably never played a game of basketball in his life. I was surprised that he said that, and I had no idea how he would actually keep to that promise. In the end, I never held him to it, and I thought it was sweet that he wanted to help. Week 7 Training Recap [Running for Dad #7]

This week had a bit of a rocky start but ended with a bang. Let’s see how I did: The Results Week 7 goal: 3.5 miles Week 7 results: Monday, August 31: 4.20 miles, 52:46 minutes total, 10:14 minute first mile, 11:32 minute second mile, 12:50 minute third mile, 15:11 minute fourth mileWednesday, September 2: 3.55 miles, 36:39 minutes total, 9:50 minute first mile, 9:39 minute second mile, 10:51 minute third mileFriday, September 4: 1.01 miles, 8:41 minutes totalSaturday, September 5: 5.02 miles, 57:15 minutes total, 10:06 minute first mile, 10:27 minute second mile, 11:04 minute third mile, 12:11 minute fourth mile, 12:58 minute fifth mile Daily Recap Monday’s run was difficult, and I didn’t perform as well as I would’ve liked. I didn’t have to make any excuses; people made all kinds of excuses for me, such as how humidity can sap your energy like nothing else. I wasn’t upset about it; just not happy with the result, but happy that I got out there and finished. Wednesday, I simply wanted to do a 3.5 mile run. Instead, I wound up setting a personal record by completing each of the first two miles in under ten minutes. Friday, I wanted to do a mile in under nine minutes for the first time. I succeeded. Saturday, I was exhausted from a grueling driving day the day before. However, my mind kept telling me that I should go for five miles. I went for it, and I did it. Dad’s Corner I felt the need to talk about this, I guess for the therapeutic value: Life experience has made me mentally stronger, and running has accelerated that process. When I was 18, Dad had quadruple bypass surgery. It was the first major health problem he had that precipitated a series of health problems over the last 17 years of his life before he passed away. It took him about a month and a half to really heal. During that time, he looked skinny, weak, and gray. I couldn’t stand seeing him like that. He was my hero, my idol, the man I called “the strongest man in the world”. It killed me to see him like that, and that’s why I wasn’t nearly as helpful to him as I could’ve been. I just couldn’t handle it. I’m not mad at my 18-year-old self. I just wish I would’ve been more helpful. Fast-forward to my 34-year-old self, and taking care of my father for the last three weeks of his life…..that experience was 100 times harder than watching him heal from bypass surgery. However, I actually rose to the occasion and helped out wherever I could. Ma still tells people that I was a rock during that time and that I did way more than was expected of me. I don’t think I was intentionally trying to make up for not being helpful during his bypass surgery recovery, but I’m glad I succeeded anyway. I just did what I felt I had to do. Week 6 Training Recap [Running for Dad #6]

The Results Week 6 goal: 3 miles Week 6 results: Monday, August 24: 3.77 miles, 44:09 minutes total, 10:57 minute first mile, 11:43 minute second mile, 11:58 minute third mileWednesday, August 26: 3.17 miles, 35.59 minutes total, 10:49 minute first mile, 11:09 minute second mile, 11:57 minute third mileFriday, August 28: 4.07 miles, 44:55 minutes total, 10:23 minute first mile, 11:02 minute second mile, 11:14 minute third mile, 11:22 minute fourth mile Daily Recap Monday I did interval work: eight minutes straight of running with one minute walk breaks. I did a total of 40 minutes of running with four minutes of walking. Since I ran for 35 minutes on Saturday, August 22, I figured I would try for 40 minutes just to make a bit of progress. Wednesday, I didn’t set out to make progress, only to maintain what I have. I decided to simply run the 5K distance and succeeded. On Tuesday, I saw my nutritionist. She is available to me as part of the corporate wellness program at work. I told her I started running, and she told me that I needed to add more carbs to my diet so that I had good fuel levels for running. I started adding more carbs Wednesday and Thursday. During Friday’s run, my legs felt awesome. Usually my legs feel tired or sore or some other version of “not good” for a good portion of the run. This time, my legs felt absolutely great. I only wanted to run 3.25 miles, but once I realized how good my legs felt after mile two, I decided to run another two miles. So, for the first time, I did over four miles without stopping. It felt amazing. Dad’s Corner I just miss him. That’s all. I really miss him. It’s coming up on three months that he’s been gone. Every now and then, I can still hear his voice in my head saying “hi son”. That’s what I hear most clearly. I also hear things like “ya done good” whenever he was happy with something that I did. It’s what I told him after he died, right as they wheeled him out of the room in the body bag. Life is unfair. I’m just glad that I can keep my connection with him alive by improving my health and fitness. It’s a great outlet for my grief. Week 5 training recap [Running for Dad #5]

Not so much speed, but everything else. First…. Daily Recap Sunday wasn’t even supposed to be a training day. I just didn’t feel good about not running. So, I busted out a quick mile. Monday, I decided to do some interval training. Five minute walking warmup, five minute walking cool down. Seven minutes of running, one minute of walking, then repeat that sequence three more times. My previous time spent running record was 25 minutes. This time, I wanted to see what happened when I ran for 28 minutes. It was exhausting, but I got through it. Wednesday, I ran with a meet-up group in Philly. It was a planned 4.3 mile loop around the city. I knew I was running with experienced runners, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to just get out there with other people and see what happened. I got smoked by everybody. I came in dead last. I expected that, and thankfully I was competing with myself and not with them. I had to stop several times because of busy intersections. I also had to stop because I suddenly felt tightness in my left calf within the first mile (don’t forget to stretch, people!). So, out of the 4.56 miles I completed, I probably ran for about 4.3 or 4.4 of them. Though it wasn’t continuous and had plenty of stops, I had never run that far before. I finally stopped running and started walking once I felt tingling in my hands. I figured that I had nothing left to prove and no reason to have more tingling and lose more feeling in my hands and elsewhere. Boxing on Friday evening was fine as always. My trainer taught me a new core workout: going from plank position to push-up position. OMG, that is hard! Saturday, I made it a beach day and drove out to Long Beach Island on the Jersey shore. All I wanted to do was run a 5K distance without stopping. And I did. Dad’s Corner At my bar mitzvah in September 1993, I remember being so proud of myself for learning how to read all of those passages in Hebrew. Reading from the Torah, making the Friday night blessing over the wine (I had grape juice), and everything else I learned. I remember sitting near the pulpit with my parents. I don’t remember too many details from that day, but Dad made a rare speech about me and the whole bar mitzvah experience. I remember him saying that his main goal was teaching me the difference between right and wrong and that he succeeded. He didn’t mention anything about reading all that Hebrew or reaching a Jewish milestone or anything like that. Only that I succeeded in learning the difference between right and wrong. Week 4 training recap [Running for Dad #4]

I REALLY REALLY wanted to hit the two mile mark on Monday of this week. Did I? Well….. Week 4 goal: 2 miles Week 4 results: Monday, August 10: 2.03 miles, 20:36 minutes total, 9:42 minute first mile, 10:25 minute second mileWednesday, August 12: 2.21 miles, 23:56 minutes total, 10:35 minute first mile, 10:54 minute second mileFriday, August 14: 2.52 miles, 25:46 minutes total, 9:23 minute first mile, 10:32 minute second mile My boxing training this week didn’t leave me completely sore all over. It was much more intense than the first week, but I was better prepared for it. I was worried that my morning exercises would leave me tired and affect my distance. I decided to test this worry and do my morning exercises before running. It actually gave me energy to go 2.21 miles on Wednesday and then 2.52 on Friday. So, I worried for nothing. If you’re interested in getting an energy boost in the morning, check out the Five Tibetan Rites. Interesting thing to note: Dad would be laughing at me if he knew that I was doing this. Not because he’s mean-spirited, but because he’s an engineer and is only concerned with efficiency. He never saw the point in people running, walking, or otherwise doing physical activity for charity. He found it highly inefficient and thought that people should just write a check. He’s an engineer who was never a big fan of physical activity. At least until he started walking more after his bypass surgery. Therefore, it’s funny that this is called “Running for Dad” since he would laugh at me if he were still alive. Though I wouldn’t do this for him if he were still alive, so I guess it’s a moot point. 🙂 Please excuse some of the audio quality in this episode. No more than a few minutes in the middle of it is somewhat subpar. My earbuds mic malfunctioned after I sweated all over it, so I did what I could to make it sound ok and at least intelligible. Week 3 training recap [Running for Dad #3]

I have been recording myself right before I run and then right after I run each day. I tell you what my thoughts and feelings are during each segment, and of course, my goals and what the results were. And I bought new shoes. And they feel amazing and were incredibly helpful in alleviating ankle and shin pain. I started boxing training on Thursday night, and it left me completely sore and exhausted for my Friday morning run. It showed in the results. Ma left her job to stay home with me. Becoming a single-income household was tough. Their credit cards were maxed out, and they had $200 to their name. I can still hear Dad saying: “we went out and bought $200 worth of baby food. We can starve, but the baby cannot.” This is the kind of man I am honoring, and I am proud to do so. Week 2 training recap [Running for Dad #2]

I think I need new shoes since I’m currently using crappy ones with lots of miles on them. This 5K mud run does come with bootcamp-style obstacles, so I want to do some cross-training to make sure that my full body is being worked out. Dad’s leadership style: he always asked his people who worked in the warehouse when he wanted to know more about their processes: “what are we doing here?” Not “what are you doing here?”, but “what are we doing here?”. He wanted them to know that he was on the same team that they were. Week 1 training recap [Running for Dad #1]

I had been wanting to take my exercising to the next level since I was getting bored of walking. My friend Kendra pointed me towards a 5K mud run in Middletown, Delaware. This mud run is a fundraiser for leukemia. That’s what gave Dad his death sentence. How perfect is that? So, I started training for it. Week 1 goal: 0.5 miles Week 1 results: Monday, July 20: 0.52 miles, 11:40 minutesWednesday, July 22: 0.66 miles, 11:06 minutesFriday, July 24: 1.06 miles, 12:07 minutes total, 11:04 minute mile Not bad for my first week.
