Developing the Capacity for Unconditional Love
“Try to limit your pain, and you will also limit your joy and capacity to love.” - Emily Gough   Pain is inevitable. Joy and love are not necessarily, because they require you to open yourself up enough to truly feel. In some ways, you are the one that determines how deeply you can feel. But most of us walk around in a state of avoidance, or trying to shut down certain parts of ourselves, prevents ourselves from feelings and experiencing certain emotions because it’s uncomfortable. We don’t know how to self-soothe or how to manage the emotions and it scares the shit out of us. Particularly when it comes to love, because when we open ourselves up to love, we open ourselves up to the very likely possibility of pain and hurt at the same time.   REFERENCES Room to Grow™ Mastermind   Episode #241, How to Have Hard Conversations & Improve Communication Episode #175, The Uncomfortable Exploration of the Grey Area: Nothing is Black and White Episode #117, The 9 Year Affair: Lessons in Infidelity IG post: @stefanossifandos   Questions?  Comments? Creating Your Own Version of Freedom From Within
Doors are open for the brand new Room to Grow™ Mastermind! Check out all the details and book a call with me to see if we're a good fit. We kick off on January 18th, 2021!   What’s your definition of freedom? Most people chalk it up to the Instagram-worthy things like: travel! Work from wherever! Laptop lifestyle! $10k months! Sure, that shit all sounds great. But freedom ultimately comes from within. 🌴I’ve lived in the exotic locations. I’ve done the laptop lifestyle (and technically still do, but in a different way) and worked from wherever. 👉🏽And I can tell you from experience that you can be in the most beautiful location in the world, surrounded by incredible people you adore and have money in the bank....and still feel trapped in a cage of your own making. Feeling lost. Directionless. Unsure of your purpose. And no idea what the f*ck to do next. Freedom is something that has to be cultivated from within. Otherwise any external version of freedom will only be an illusion. So where to start when it comes to cultivating this sense of freedom? We're going to dig into this today and everything that freedom truly represents for you.   REFERENCES Room to Grow™ Mastermind Book a Call with Emily   Episode #117, The 9 Year Affair: Lessons in Infidelity  Episode #116, Reiki, the Healing Power of Energy & Protecting Yourself with Kim Schweitzer   Questions?  Comments? Miscarriage, Van Life & Making Unconventional Choices with Claire Falconer & Luke Morris
I'm honoured to be able to bring you two incredible friends of mine - and this is also the first time I'm interviewing a couple on the Room to Grow™ Podcast! I met Luke and Claire in Bali and we basically worked out and ate our way around Canggu - they're my favourite people to third wheel with 😂 In all seriousness though, this is a very special conversation, and I'm very grateful to both Claire & Luke for being so open about their heartbreaking experience with two miscarriages, along with sharing some behind the scenes of their decisions to make international moves and renovate a van to start living in while travelling around Australia and live life outside the conventional standards and more on their own terms. A little about these two: Claire Falconer is a women’s health & nutrition coach, functional medicine practitioner, personal trainer and yoga teacher. Luke Morris is the founder of Wild Wood, an eco-friendly company that creates sunglasses made from reclaimed wood and plants one tree for each product sold.  Tune in and get to know these two amazing humans as they share their story.   DON'T MISS IT: Doors are open for the Room to Grow™ Mastermind! How Breaking Patterns & Healing Changes You
Doors are open for the brand new Room to Grow™ Mastermind! Check out all the details and book a call with me to see if we're a good fit. We kick off on January 18th, 2021!   On today's episode, we're exploring what happens when we do the work to heal old hurts and change our behaviours. Healing happens when we’re presented with a choice: take the more comfortable option of remaining the same, or sit with the uncomfortable truth that we can both do and be better.  It’s going to force you to face parts of yourself that would be easier to avoid. But the alternative is to instead repeat the same patterns and behaviours over and over again, to our own detriment, until we reach a point of no longer tolerating our own bullshit. Sometimes, it requires a cataclysmic event in our lives to push us to the point of change. A health scare, a relationship ending, missing an opportunity because we didn’t step up the way we know we could be capable of. And when we do this work, over time you begin to notice changes. Parts of you will soften and become more forgiving, compassionate and tolerant, while other parts of you may harden and you'll develop firmer boundaries and less tolerance for bullshit that go against your core values. We're getting into all of it today!   REFERENCES Room to Grow™ Mastermind Book a Call with Emily   Episode #185, What Does 'Doing the Work' Even Mean? Human Connection Requires Intention
Doors are open for the brand new Room to Grow™ Mastermind! Check out all the details and book a call with me to see if we're a good fit. We kick off on January 18th, 2021!   We're talking CONNECTION today, and this is one to pay attention to. Connection with another human being doesn’t happen by accident, and connection often won’t be convenient. Relationships in general often aren’t convenient, but they fulfill us in ways that nothing else can. We have to make the conscious decision to pour into others, to give people our full, undivided attention, to be curious and willing to learn. When you go about connecting with intention, everything shifts. And in a time when we’re all feeling lonelier and more isolated than ever, we need to be even more intentional and get creative about how we interact with others. SEASON 2: Launching December 31, 2020
I’m Emily Gough, a human connection coach, speaker and mental health advocate with an insatiable sense of curiosity and adventure, always asking more questions and using the power of stories to teach, learn and grow. 240 episodes in after launching in June 2018, we’re shaking things up here on the Room to Grow™ Podcast and making some highly intentional and radical moves as I shift the way I show up for myself and in service of others, particularly on this podcast. It’s about allowing for Room to Grow™ and expanding this podcast  to focus on three main pillars: 1. Human connection 2. Personal Growth 3. Freedom   We’ll be covering topics like: Relationships and cultivating genuine, supportive connections with ourselves and others Speaking your truth. Shattering personal barriers. Radical self acceptance. Courageously leaning into your skill sets.   Whether it’s a solo episode or bringing on highly curated guests with incredible stories, experiences and expertise to share, we’re leaning in and taking the entire idea of Room to Grow™ to the next level - all while still covering the uncomfortable topics that many of us like to avoid. It’s time to expand, level up and show up boldly. To take up space and acknowledge that little twinge of knowing you’re capable of more, even if it means going against the grain. To confidently trust yourself and show up with all kinds of compassion. And to deepen and strengthen your relationship with yourself and others while creating the life you’ve barely allowed yourself to dream about, whatever that looks like for you. Season 2 kicks off December 31, 2020. Buckle up.   Questions?  Comments? Want to connect and chat about this episode? Communication: the Lubrication for Relationships with Renelle Nelson
I'm honoured to have had the chance to bring listener favourite Renelle Nelson back onto the podcast for a continued discussion around sex, relationships, and communication - and this one is JUICY! 20 Things Not Worth Postponing in Life
Another trip around the sun, and 2020 in particular has taught us many lessons that we didn't even know we needed. One lesson in particular that has stood out to me is that anything can happen, and not to put off doing certain things. Some examples of things to *not* postpone: Reaching out when you miss someone or you think of them. Telling people we love them, even when it means we have to put aside our pride and ego to do so. Making hard choices that others won’t if it will bring you peace Showing compassion towards yourself and others Caring for your physical health Learning to let go and release expectations Tune in for the full list...and a few stories to go with them.   REFERENCES Episode #230, Slow Down to Speed Up: Burnout & the Inherent Vulnerability of Entrepreneurship Episode #126, Forgiveness Isn't Found, It's Earned: Doing the Inner Work Episode #153, The Life-Altering Year of 32: Burning Bridges, Building Relationships & Facing Your Darkest Fears Episode #46, The Birthday Episode: Simple Ways to Create More Joy Even When Life Gets Challenging Episode #78, Sorry, But Stop Apologizing   Questions?  Comments? Gossiping: Evolution, Connection & the Harm it Can Create
“Gossiping is motivated by a desire to be closer to the person you’re talking to. When you notice you’re talking together about someone who isn’t there, pause and check in with yourself. What might you be avoiding talking about?” -Dr. Alexandra H. Soloman   We've all gossiped, let's be honest. In fact, for the average person, gossip makes up 80% of our conversations as human beings. And while most of us think of gossip as negative, there are actually evolutionary roots to gossip that have had positive benefits to us as human beings. But overall, there's a lot of gossip that can be harmful, both to the person being discussed and the one doing the gossiping. Because that’s the thing about gossiping: when I hear someone talking about somebody else in a really shitty way, my first thought is: what are they saying about me when my back is turned then? In this episode we'll get into: How gossip can be used as a form of bonding, and why that can be incredibly negative What gossiping can tell you about a person Turning around a connection with someone who only wants to gossip Why intention matters when it comes to gossip and how to spot the differences Asking yourself how you want to show up in the world and the kind of human you want to become   REFERENCES Episode #17 Rest for Success and How to Manage Metabolism with Dr. Jade Teta Episode #205 Purpose, Using Pain for Growth & Building Multi-Passionate Online Businesses with Dr. Jade Teta Episode #88, Save the Drama for Your Mama: Being Drama-Focused is Keeping You From Happiness with Christina Montalvo Time Magazine: Why Do People Gossip?   Questions?  Comments? [BIZ TIPS] Re-Examining Your Definition of Success
There are two things you need to be asking yourself to create your own version of success: 1. Get clear on your WHY. Why do you do what you do? Dig deep - this can’t just be about the money. There has to be more to it than that. 2. What do you want? What feels good to you? But that's much easier said than done. Because that leap of faith can feel like the most difficult decision in the world, and it's so hard to know if we're making the right choices or not. So what do we do? Take action and hope for the best? Or try to weigh out the options to prevent major mistakes? Let's get into it ;) REFERENCES Episode #221, Your Job is Not Who You Are: Trust the Journey Episode #152, [BIZ TIPS] Harness Your Creativity: Switching From Consumer to Creator Episode #120, Listening to Your Intuition & Gut Instinct: Stop Ignoring Your Body Are You Listening to Your Intuition? [BIZ TIPS] Put the Human Back Into Business (and Stop De-Humanizing Your Potential Clients)
First up, the much-requested BRAND NEW mini course is up now: Grow the Sh*t Out of Your Podcast. 🥳🥳 If you want to learn how to increase downloads with NO ads, be bold and stand out from the crowd, and massively grow your business via a podcast that works for you while you sleep, you're going to need to dive in. Plus, it's the spiciest content I've put together yet, if I do say so myself ;) and JAM-PACKED with simple tools and strategies you can start implementing immediately to see huge growth in your podcast.  Grab the details HERE.   Speaking of organically driving traffic and boosting downloads...let's talk about why numbers can't be the *only* important metric in your business. There's a particular language used in the online marketing business, and much of it has to do with things like "leads," "conversions," "followers," etc.  I've even been behind the scenes of some big-name launches where the number of courses sold during a launch are referred to as "units." Listen, I get it. I've occasionally used some of this language as well, but every time I have, it has felt....wrong. Icky. Weird. Because when we remove the human element of business, that's when things start to go awry. You begin to lose touch with the person and people you're trying to speak to. You aren't clear on what their needs are or how you can help to solve a problem they're having. And it can make it easy to forget that there are real, live human beings behind the screen showing up for you every day. Are you showing up for them? It's harder to do if you simply think of people as numbers. We're diving into all of this today and more, including why it's so important for make it super simple for people to get to know you quickly and easily, because we can forget how many new people are coming into our sphere on a regular basis.    REFERENCES Episode #218, [BIZ TIPS] Why a Smaller Audience is an Advantage Episode #144, [BIZ TIPS] How an Awkward Introvert Makes Friends Around the Globe Episode #117, The 9 Year Affair: Lessons in Infidelity   Questions?  Comments? What to Do When You Feel Uninspired
We've all had those moments where it felts as though the creative energy simply wouldn't flow. You know, like when you realize you've been staring at the same page of your book for 15 minutes without reading a word. Or looking blankly at a computer screen without actually accomplishing anything, spinning your wheels and getting caught in "busy" work because the words simply won't come for that post you're trying to push out.  Everything feels forced, ideas won't populate, and you're worried your creativity has left the building for good. I've got good news: it will come back. But you're going to have to take care of you first. In this episode I'm giving you all the tools you need to trust the process, get that creativity and inspiration back, and remind yourself who the f*ck you are.   REFERENCES Episode #230, Slow Down to Speed Up: Burnout & the Inherent Vulnerability of Entrepreneurship Episode #117, The 9 Year Affair: Lessons in Infidelity Episode #90, How to Sleep Like a Boss with Christine Hansen   Questions?  Comments?
