Researchers at NASA, along with the United States Geological Survey and Lunar Planetary Institute completed the map, which is available online.  The map combines data from six different Apollo-era maps and more recent satellite images. The map is topographical and quite detailed, at a 1:5,000,000 scale. Fort Collins Salons Team Up to Honor Gift Cards of Closed Salon Popular Fort Collins salon Europa has closed for good, and many former clients were left with valuable, unredeemed gift cards. The salon was known for selling gift cards, as well as giving out 20% discounts on their anniversary, according to the Coloradoan.  In order to honor the cards and make sure clients get what they paid for, two other local salons are teaming up to take care of Europa’s former customers. Studio Be and Facette Medical Spa & Hair Experience will both be taking Europa gift cards at face value. In order to redeem the card, both salons are asking that any appointment is made before October 1st.  This has been News to Cure the Blues. With the reality of COVID-19 and quarantine keeping Americans stuck indoors, it can be tough to face the day. However, good news still exists, even in times like these. I’m 90.5 KCSU News Director Max Hunter and This is… NEWS TO CURE THE BLUES Fort Collins Senior Center Nation’s First “Sew Safe Site” Coronavirus is challenging, but our community never fails to come together and chip in to help support our essential workers. Volunteers from all walks of life have gathered at the closed Fort Collins Senior Center to create masks for Northern Colorado. According to Fox 31’s Evan Krugel, the Center has made more than 2000 masks, and dubbed themselves the nation’s first “Sew Safe Site”. This is because all volunteers must follow social distancing guidelines, and take temperature checks before entering.  They are welcoming more volunteers, and you can find more information on their website. Bandcamp Waives Their Share of Artist Revenue To Support Musicians Bandcamp, a fair-trade online music streaming service, is stepping up their efforts to support local artists. Bandcamp allows listeners to buy the songs they stream, and choose the price. Typically, Bandcamp then takes 15% of the money, which is already generous compared to services like iTunes and Spotify.  To aid artists losing touring revenue during quarantine, Bandcamp has decided to waive that 15% on the first Friday of the next three months. Bandcamp has already waived their share of the revenue once on March 20th, and on that day alone raised 4.3 million dollars.  Fun Things to Do in Northern Colorado This Week When you’re stuck at home, It’s incredibly easy to get bored. Missing Sheep Returns Home After Seven Years Some viral news from Australia: Prickles the sheep, thought missing since 2013, has found her family. When Prickles was only a lamb, the devastating Tasmanian brush fires burned through her home and destroyed her family’s farm. Separated from the Grey family, who raised her, Prickles wandered through the surrounding area for seven years. Prickles may never have found her missing family, but one day the Grey family decided to take a break from quarantining at home and celebrate their son’s birthday in the remains of the old family farm. While in the backyard, they spotted a gigantic white mass. Prickles was still there, now covered in seven years worth of untrimmed wool! Now that Prickles the sheep has been cleaned, the Grey family is trying to use the media attention to give to a good cause. They’ve started a fundraiser to guess how much the Prickles weighs, and are donating all the money to the United Nations Refugee Agency. You can find the fundraiser here. News To Cure The Blues 4
With the reality of COVID-19 and quarantine keeping Americans stuck indoors, it can be tough to face the day. However, good news still exists, even in times like these. I’m 90.5 KCSU News Director Max Hunter and This is… NEWS TO CURE THE BLUES The Taste of Fort Collins is Still On One of the hardest parts of being quarantined is missing all the fun events that had to be cancelled this spring. Thankfully, one local classic is still on: The Taste of Fort Collins!  While it has been pushed back to July 25th and 26th, the festival will still be happening. According to NorthFortyNews, the headlining bands will be Collective Soul, and Spin Doctors.  Local Hero Saves Easter for Kids Easter was last Sunday, but unlike most years there was very little egg hunting. Since social distancing guidelines are in place, Easter parties had to take place indoors, and public celebration was impossible. In Fort Collins however, the Easter Bunny still came to town. Kelsey Wade, a local 16 year-old, already had a bunny costume she’d made at home. On Easter Sunday she went all over Fort Collins to surprise kids as the Easter Bunny, responding to requests on her Nextdoor page. She spent most of the day bringing joy to local children. According to the Coloradoan, Wade isn’t even christian, she just felt that she had a way to spread joy during a difficult time. While kids still had to practice social distancing from Kelsey, she was still able to bring some Easter cheer in houses this year. LEGO Begins Building Visors, Donating to Kids in Need Help can come from the most unlikely places. The LEGO company, based in Denmark has decided to stop building 10-foot tall Star Wars characters, and to start making visors. The visors, made from LEGO plastic, are for healthcare workers to protect their eyes from being exposed to COVID-19. They say in their Instagram post, they can produce more than 13,000 visors a day. LEGO is also giving back to their biggest supporters: kids! The LEGO Foundation donated 50 million dollars to Education Cannot Wait, an organization which helps provide education to children worldwide.  They are also donating 500,000 LEGO sets to children in need. To learn more about how to give a child in need the gift of entertainment during quarantine, you can learn more on their Instagram post. This has been News to Cure the Blues.
