In This Episode:Tyler and Mike invite Chris Lee to come in and share what life is teaching him. Chris is living a rich life from a foundation established by parents that taught him the important things in life. Growing up he learned the value of doing hard things, of trees and fruit, of the harvest, of sacrifice, and of putting God first. These lessons echo in his life and in the things that he is teaching to his children every day. In his time with the guys, they get into some incredible conversations around topics like: Discipline Leveraging time Sharing whatever you have Power of creation Finding the "outer edge" Worst case scenario Overcoming fear Breaking chains Alignment The list goes on and on but listeners are in for a treat as Chris provides a master class on living the richest man in town life with intention and intensity.  The guys' notebooks are full after this one! Episode #128: Tyler and Mike with Brian Grow-"Replace Judgment With Curiosity"
In This Episode:Tyler and Mike are mixing things up for Season 5 of the Richest Men In Town podcast. The guys will be bringing Brian Grow into the conversation every once in a while to make meaning and break down what the RMIT guests have been sharing. This week Brian joins in the conversation around all kinds of topics including sports (shocker!), community, Zion, the power of curiosity, sympathy vs. empathy vs. compassion, not knowing answers, admitting when we're wrong, and questions of the soul like to pickleball or not to pickleball. Listeners might be able to check off Jimmy V's checklist for a good day with some laughter, some thinking, and some feels. Thanks, Brian for joining the madness.  Show NotesWho Said It... "It was then that I decided to replace judgment with curiosity and allowed myself to really listen and hear what they had to say." -Lynn Nottage "I would like to beg you dear Sir, as well as I can, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer." -Rainer Maria Rilke "My scientist friends have come up with things like 'principles of uncertainty' and dark holes. They're willing to live inside imagined hypotheses and theories. But many religious folks insist on answers that are always true. We love closure, resolution, and clarity while thinking that we are people of 'faith'! How strange that the very word 'faith' has come to mean its exact opposite." -Richard Rohr "There is no power for change greater than a community that discovers what it cares about." -Margaret Wheatley "One of the things we need to learn is that very great change starts from very small conversations, held among people who care. Forget about the politics or the staff person who is driving you crazy...What are the things you really have deep, abiding concern for? What is it you really have some passion for? If you go into that question for yourself, you will find the energy to go forward." -Margaret Wheatley "Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman References... Episode #127: Nick Skulavik-"I Can Do Anything!"
In This Episode:Mike introduces Tyler to one of his favorite human beings. Nick Skulavik jumps onto the RMIT podcast to share his story with anyone that will listen. He has a lot to be thankful for these days and he lets the guys in on the journey that he has been on to improve himself and keep the fire stoked. This episode has a little bit of everything...from junk on cheese and the boneless wing debate (again!) to the importance of creativity and the miracle of healing. Top it all off with a boy named Havoc and hopefully, listeners will learn what Nick has-that life and loved ones are precious, that cussing isn't cool, and that we can do anything. To Alixis, Sonora, Marlowe, and Havoc...you're dad is our hero. To Nick...thanks for showing up and making your folks proud.  Keep going brother!Show NotesWho Said It... References... Psst... Episode #126: Rachel Spencer-"He Stayed With Me"
In This Episode:Tyler introduces Mike to Rachel Spencer and Rachel proceeds to give the guys a Master Class in holding space and the power of God's love. This episode is about making new connections and seeing things from someone else's perspective. Rachel shares what faith looks and feels like for her as a gay woman and she is powerful in every sense of the word. Her witness is that God is her friend and she can feel Him helping her, even in the midst of doubts. She lets the guys in on her journey of stripping down her identity and locking in on the things that she knows. There might be more questions than answers sometimes, but through it all, she has learned that God loves us because of who we are and not in spite of who we are. And that makes all the difference. To Rachel, thank you for the intentional way that you are showing up in your life. You are loved and everyone that tunes in to hear your story will feel it and will be reminded that they are too. Episode #125: Alex & Bruce Biegel (Part 2)-"All Of It Is Beautiful"
In This Episode:Way back in November, the guys had an incredible conversation with the Biegels and they knew then that they weren't done with Alex and Bruce (see Episode #124). Fast forward to March and they are finally able to reconnect and they didn't skip a beat. They pick up right where they left off and the result is a fitting and unforgettable Part 2. The guys use the time to get caught up, revisit pieces of their remarkable story, and explore how they are dealing with the challenges that today presents. Through all of it, their witness of truth lights the guys up and everyone walks away grateful and edified. Ever have a righteous desire that just isn't happening in your life? Ever allow self-talk to get in your head? Ever discredit your experience or your own hard-earned wisdom? If you have, you will relate to this conversation. The Biegels teach us all what they have learned and are learning to get through things and the guys are taking notes. For this episode, it's simple. Tune in and be changed. After all, what do you have to lose?Show NotesWho Said It... “You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.” -Rene Daumal References... Episode #124: Alex & Bruce Biegel (Part I)-"God Will Work It Out"
In This Episode:Tyler and Mike introduce RMIT listeners to Bruce and Alex Biegel. The Biegels are an amazing couple that has a lot to teach anyone that will pull up a chair and listen to their story. Their individual faith journeys could not be more opposite from each other, but that's only half the story. The real adventure begins when they find each other and start building a life together. It's a love story unlike any that the guys have heard before. It's a living testament to the power of faith to overcome, to renew, to restore, to forgive, to endure, to surrender, and to never give up. This time spent with Bruce and Alex is a perfect reminder that everyone's journey is different, everyone's challenges and problems are custom, and with God, we can work it all out. These are some deep waters and Tyler and Mike are definitely not done with the Biegels. Neither is God.  Show NotesWho Said It... Episode #123: Nick Webb-"We Build Relationships, We Win"
In This Episode:Mike introduces Tyler to one of his favorite people as Nick Webb joins the Richest Men In Town family. Nick is a guy that has dedicated his life to building community one relationship at a time. He believes that finding and building relationships always lead to positive things. By following the examples of strong models like his grandmother, he has dedicated himself to giving back to make things better for other people, especially teenagers and young adults. Six years ago, Nick learned the truth that having kids changes everything, and he lets the guys in on what his twin "million dollar" boys mean to him and his wife Abby.  His dad adventure started with a couple of months in the NICU and, looking back, he wouldn't have it any other way. Being a husband and a father has helped Nick redefine what life is really all about and this perspective gives him the power to be a man of influence to everyone around him. Nick Webb, thank you for the way you are living every day and for the way that you showed up to tell your story. Keep going, brother. Listeners, grab a pen and a pad and tune in to Nick's story. Let's all do something with this one!Show NotesWho Said It... "One day you will wake up and there won't be any more time to do the thing that you have always wanted. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it.”  -Viktor Frankl "Nobody is born with a style or a voice. Episode #121: Daphne and Troy Blanchard-"Uh Oh...Mom and Dad are Receiving Inspiration"
In This Episode:Tyler and Mike sit down with an old guest and get the "rest of the story". Way back in March of 2021, the guys had Troy Blanchard on for Episode #43 "Choose Your Own Adventure" and Troy was incredible. What the rest of the world did not know at that time is that Troy and his incredible wife Daphne were on the verge of doing something pretty bold. They were packing up their US life to respond to inspiration. You see, they had both felt the prompting (in very different ways!) to disrupt, stretch, and grow and, in the end, it meant a family move. Not across the street or on the other side of town. Not even to another state. It meant a move to Ecuador. Now, Tyler and Mike take some time to sit down with Troy and Daphne to get an update and learn what the Ecuador move has taught them. To say that their notebooks were filled from the conversation is an understatement. In their time together they discuss a wide range of topics including: Focus on learning to receive and act on inspiration Staying nimble Drips and floods Dealing with resistance, doubt, and fear Remembering sacred feelings and moments Embracing change and the vulnerability that comes with it Pushing past the imposter syndrome Choosing courage over comfort Looking up and not around Intentional disruption Focusing on the next step Show NotesWho Said It... Episode #120: Brian Grow-"Ruts vs. Grooves"
In This Episode:Brian Grow comes with his second round of questions for the guys and the conversation that follows goes deep fast. His questions get everyone talking about a wide range of topics including:  Alignment between actions and truth The importance of thinking for ourselves and rethinking Being anchored in identity The power in the things we tell ourselves Rut vs. Groove Incorrect mental patterns Danger of guilt and shame Overcoming the world Patience with ourselves Being the change to build community Show NotesWho Said It... "There can be no happiness if the things that we believe in are different from the things that we do." -James Clear "When you act badly, you may think you are bad when in truth you're usually mistaken. You're just wrong. The challenge is not so much in closing the gap between our actions and our beliefs, rather the challenge is closing the gap between our actions and the truth. That's the challenge." -Elder Lawrence E. Corbridge "I hope that everyone becomes rich and famous so they can realize that's not it." -Jim Carey "Here's the grand truth. While the world insists that power, possessions, popularity, and pleasures of the flesh bring happiness, they do not. They cannot. What they do produce is nothing but a hollow substitute for the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God." -Russell M. Nelson "Let's start with a test. Do you have any opinions that you would be reluctant to express in front of a group of your peers? If the answer is no, you might want to stop and think about that. If everything you believe is something you're supposed to believe, could that possibly be a coincidence? Odds are it isn't. Odds are, you just think whatever you're told." -Paul Graham "Overcoming the world is not an event that happens in a day or two. It happens over a lifetime as we repeatedly embrace the doctrine of Christ. We cultivate faith in Jesus Christ by repenting daily and keeping covenants that endow us with power. We stay on the covenant path and are blessed with spiritual strength, personal revelation, increasing faith, and the ministering of angels. Living the doctrine of Christ can produce the most powerful virtuous cycle, creating spiritual momentum in our lives." -Russell M. Nelson References... In This Episode:The guys bring back a friend of the program, Brian Grow, and the script gets flipped. Brian is the one that comes with questions for our hosts. Or should we say question, because he gets one question out of the bag and a two-hour incredibly rich conversation spills out. It's a conversation that you don't want to miss. Show NotesWho Said It... "Religion is at its best when it makes us ask hard questions of ourselves. It's at its worst when it deludes us into thinking that we have all the answers for everybody else." "I am convinced that men hate each other because they fear each other, they fear each other because they don't know each other, they don't know each other because they don't communicate with each other, and they don't communicate with each other because they are separated from each other." -Martin Luther King Jr. "If you come here to help me, you're wasting your time. Maxwell once observed, sometimes “we can’t make it all add up because clearly we do not have all the numbers.” "And I will tell you of the wrestle which I had before God, before I received a remission of my sins.Behold, I went to hunt beasts in the forests; and the words which I had often heard my father speak concerning eternal life, and the joy of the saints, sunk deep into my heart. And my soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the heavens." -Enos 1:2-4 “The Standard of Truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.” -Joseph Smith "For want of a nail, the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe, the horse was lost. For want of the knight, the battle was lost. For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost. The kingdom was lost for the want of a nail." -Old Proverb "The idea of duty is a simple one. We all have a job to do in life. Whether that job is serving customers in a restaurant, taking care of our family, teaching our children, policing our cities, caring for the ill and infirm...we must do our job to the best of our ability. We must do our job well, not because it serves our interests, but because it serves the interests of others." -Admiral William H. McRaven References... Episode #117: Peter Carlseen-"It's All Going To Work Out"
In This Episode:Mike and Tyler catch up with a long-time friend of the program. Peter Carlseen comes in to sit down and share what life has been teaching him these days and the guys listen up and take notes. In true RMIT fashion, the conversation bounces from Elko, Nevada to lease agreeements for kids living at home. Sprinkle in some playoff baseball and a plug for Invisalign and that's just the introduction. Peter settles in on some heavy "Aha" moments that he has been blessed with from the university that is called FAMILY. The guys discuss leaving the comfort zone to grow, what unconditional love really looks like, and the power of compassion. God is indeed love and life gets a lot more rich when the two great commandments are at the center of everything that we do. Peter and his family are living courageously these days and they've never been closer. Tune in to hear Peter's masterclass on supporting kids through anything and maybe his courage will be contagious. To Peter and the Carlseen family, thanks for letting us in and showing us what a rich life looks like. Episode #116: Michael Druey-"I Carry Peace"
In This Episode:This week Tyler and Mike sit down "Pops". Michael Druey (aka "Pops" or "Grandpa Mike") has been trying to do it right for decades and the end result is a rich life that bears the sweet fruit we like to call RELATIONSHIPS. From his incredible personal relationship with God (aka "Dad") to his wife/best friend Sharon, Mike tries to leave enough evidence in the end for the world to be able to convict him of being a Christian. In their time with Michael, the guys are treated to a masterclass of mid-week church and nuggets about serving others, loving not judging, putting God first, reaching out to others in their moments of need, and so much more. Michael shares that he was not looking for God but God came and got him and the rest is history. Grandpa Mike, you're right. There are absolute truths out there for us to learn and discover. There is power in just loving. When you're in a hole, there's wisdom in the counsel to "stop digging". We can see that God did indeed flip a switch in Mike's heart and now he is doing a little bit of that to everyone that is lucky enough to know him. Keep stirring the pot Pops. Thanks for showing up, sharing, and teaching us all how to live that richest man in town life. If the game is about impact, you Michael Druey are a champion indeed. Show NotesWho Said It... Episode #115: Mitch Bahr-"When You Know, You Know"
In This Episode:This week the guys sit down with Mitch Bahr. In 1984, Mitch was 11 when he hears a live performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" as part of the 1984 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. In that moment, he felt like music needed to be a part of his life. Now, almost 40 years later, music is an integral part of Mitch's incredibly rich life. In his time with Mike and Tyler, Mitch shares his journey and the lessons that life has taught him along the way. The result is an incredible episode with an incredible guy who would be nothing without his incredible wife, Carmen. You think you have a great "How you met your spouse" story? Wait until you hear Mitch's. And let's get one thing straight... Mitch teaches more than just music. He invests in people and great music happens as a by-product. Class is in session here as he gives a master class about being centered on what's important, being content, what it means to be truly successful, the importance of empathy, that "faith is not a fortune cookie", and so much more. Mitch Bahr, thanks for showing up the way you did. Thank you for living life the way that you do and for showing us all how to do it right. Keep going!Show NotesWho Said It...
