Old Florida Tourism
Do you save brochures, ticket stubs, and other bits of memorabilia from your vacations, or is that a throwback to the past? Today’s special guest, and author, Tim Hollis, was raised by a dad who saved it all and passed it on to his son who grew up to write about it! Listen, as he shares with us the charm of Old Florida tourism, way before there was a famous mouse involved! (There may also be talk of the endless alcohol trails, and rear-facing station wagon seats that encouraged breathing exhaust. Here’s to the 70’s!) Are you on Facebook? Well, you can find us there, too! Give us a like and follow along at the Retro Road Podcast page! Route 66 Roadtrip
Back in 2012, we took a two-week adventure down Route 66, America's "Mother Road." A podcast called Retro Road would not be complete without a series on the route, and today's episode is the first in just such a series! We give an overview of this iconic and historic road through our own memories of one of our favorite adventures of all time! Mentioned in today’s show: Read about the history of the route (including the Dust Bowl era, tourist surge, and decommissioning of the road) from Wikipedia, here. What about those "certified bathrooms?" Read more here, from Michael Witzel's book, Route 66 Remembered. Check out Michael Wallis's terrific book: Route 66: The Mother Road For a comprehensive list of roadside attractions (including our favorites mentioned today), check out this page from TheRoute-66.com. Take a look at our favorite hotels from our trip: Blue Swallow Inn – Tucumcari, NM Wigwam Motel – Holbrook, AZ The Canyon Motel – Williams, AZ (caboose) El Rey Court – Santa Fe, NM El Rancho Hotel – Gallup, NM Seems everyone is on Facebook, and we are no different!
