What happens when a Workforce Board thinks beyond its limited government resources to find new ways of supporting local students and workers?Today, a conversation with Peter Callstrom. Peter is the President and CEO of the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP), the local Workforce Development Board for the City and County of San Diego.  SDWP funds and delivers programs that empower job seekers to meet the current and future workforce needs of employers in San Diego County. Together with community partners, the Workforce Partnership provides targeted employment services designed to help eligible adult job seekers identify, or regain, a career that will promote their success. In 2019 the Workforce Partnership began offering 9–12-month UC San Diego Extension certificate programs through the Workforce Income Share Agreement (ISA) Fund. Students receive training in Front-End Web Development and Business Intelligence, and the Workforce Partnership provides job placement, internship, mentorship and other support to help students land a job in fast-growing technology occupations. The program costs nothing upfront. Instead, students who graduate and get a job making above $40,000 will pay 6–8% of their salary for a set period of time back into the Workforce ISA Fund. The Fund re-invests the money in ISAs for new students. Course Report is the most-visited resource for students researching coding bootcamps online. At Course Report, she defines and executes their product and content strategies and conducts leading research about the bootcamp industry. Prior to Course Report, Liz held multiple roles at Living Social, an online marketplace that allows its registered users to buy and share things to do in their city. In addition to Course Report, she is a breakfast taco connoisseur, and bootcamp advocate. Course Report was founded in 2013 by Liz and Adam Lovallo. While at LivingSocial, Liz and Adam saw the Hungry Academy come to fruition and were inspired by the program’s success in transforming bright employees into entry-level developers in six months. As the bootcamp model gained steam, so too did the need for a third-party resource for their students. Week in Review & New Show Announcement
Another great week here at Skill FM.  First, we posted our second episode of the Isaac Morehouse podcast, an interview with his 10 year old son about his unschooling experiences. As one of our listeners on Facebook put it: "Pure Gold!" Second, we posted the first episode of our exciting collaboration with the CLOSE IT Summit, one of the premier workforce conferences in the U.S. that takes place every fall. The first episode featured a talk by Steve Cadigan, one of the early employees at LinkedIn, about global trends in hiring and their implications.  Third, we shared an interview with Lambda School Chief of Staff, Trevor McKendrick, who shed some light on the inner workings of Lambda, one of the most well-known and fastest growing code academies in Silicon Valley.  Finally, on the Skill podcast, we shared a conversation with Alec Resnick, the co-founder of Powderhouse Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts. Powderhouse was nearly the first self-directed, public, in-district high school in the country. Over the course of more than five years, the Powderhouse team (with support from a wide variety of community organizations, foundations, experts, and policymakers) worked closely with Somerville Public Schools to develop a detailed, practical, and piloted plan to open a new high school…which was thwarted at the last minute by Somerville’s Superintendent and School Committee.
