Salt River Restoration
Another installment and this one is on river restoration! The Salt River used to be over 200-feet wide and host ship based transport for canneries, timber, and travel. Then it was barely more than a ditch surrounded by willow and agricultural fields. Flooding on county roads and pasture limited access in the area and created a whole suite of problems. The Humboldt County Resource Conservation District is now engaged in a multi-year, multi-phased project that is restoring the Salt River. It is one of the biggest restoration projects on the west coast of the United States in a small rural community, and spans seven miles.
