In this week’s special Christmas edition of the What We Watched Podcast, Chris Soprych and Will Pfeifer talk about the new movies “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” and “Hugo,” discuss the new-to-video “A Dolphin’s Tale” and suggest a few holiday films, including “Die Hard” and the forgotten ’80s horror movie “Christmas Evil.”

This week on the podcast, Chris Soprych takes in a Jon Favrea-directed double feature of “Elf” and “Cowboys and Aliens” and worries about the direction Mr. Favreau’s career may be headed. Then, continuing the director theme, Will Pfeifer offers a review of Woody Allen’s latest, “Midnight in Paris.” All that and the usual roundup of box office results and new DVDs.

This could be the last episode of “Community” for a while (and our last podcast for a while), but it’s hard to imagine the show going out on a stronger note. “Regional Holiday Music” is arguably one of the finest “Community” episode in the history of the show, combining a razor-sharp satire of “Glee” with some great music and the usual stellar performances by the cast.   And here, as promised in the episode, is the address to send some snail mail to NBC telling the network how much you love the show. C’mon — you know you’re sending out a lot of mail at this time of year anyway. Why not add one to the pile to save one of the best shows on TV.  

On this week’s installment of the What We Watched podcast, Chris Soprych describes the beauty and wonder of Werner Herzog’s “Cave of Forgotten Dreams,” which takes viewers into a French cave filled with ancient drawings. Then Will Pfeifer brings things down several thousand notches with a review of the justifiably forgotten 1979 comedy “Americathon.” All that, plus the usual box office and new DVD roundup news.

The whole gang is back this week, with Chris Soprych returning to discuss the latest episode of “Community” with Melissa Westphal and Will Pfeifer. “Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism” told two tales (as the title suggests), one focusing on Annie’s efforts to hide the fact that she destroyed Abed’s “Dark Knight” DVD, the other shining the spotlight on the relationship between Shirley and Jeff. Here’s what we thought of ‘em both…

Sad news on the Greendale campus this week, as we learned that our favorite sitcom is going on hiatus after the Christmas break, with no real sign of when it will return. (Though apparently all 22 episodes of season 3 will be shot and aired.) But Will Pfeifer and Melissa Westphal try to keep things upbeat this week with a discussion of “Documentary Filmmaking Redux,” easily one of the best episodes of the season — and an especially strong showcase for Jim Rash, who plays Dean Craig Pelton (above).

On this week’s installment of the Register Star What We Watched Podcast, movie fans Chris Soprych and Will Pfeifer talk about the pros and cons of the animated hit “Puss in Boots,” why “Cannonball Run” is awful but still worth watching, and how “The Room” went from an obscure bad movie to a cult phenom. As dedicated fans of “Community,” we admit that the sitcom has stumbled a bit in its third season, delivering episodes that, though they were certainly entertaining, somehow lacked that special spark of previous years. But, we’re happy to report, Thursday night’s episode, “Rememdial Chaos Theory,” was among the strongest in the show’s history, with a complex plot, oddball flights of fancy, laugh-out-loud moments and a geninuely touching ending. Listen to our discussion, where we try to untangle the many realities created with few rolls of the die…   

Unlike the uncomfortably large study group that was the center of this week’s episode of “Community,” our podcast group is down to a mere two* — Will Pfeifer and Chris Soprych — but that doesn’t stop us from dissecting (unlike Britta!) the latest episode. Topics covered include the direction the show seems to be heading, Chang’s film noir delusions and the sad complexity of modern Legos. * By the way, regular podcaster Melissa Westphal does appear in the form of an email she sent us with her comments on the episode.
