17. From Kicking & Screaming to Grace: Tommy’s Early Recovery Experiences
Today, on In the Circle, there is a slightly different thing going on as we share with you a talk that I gave on our recent retreat to Big Sky Montana. 16. How Do I Overcome My Inner Critic?
Welcome to In The Circle. It is always such a blessing to sit and explore with you all. Today, we hear a sharply relevant inquiry to all humankind. Mariana, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community, shares that she has had a direct experience of the positive effects of Kundalini yoga, and yet her inner critic still questions the practice.  We all have these voices within us that question our evolution and transformation, even when we know that what we are doing is working.  Everybody wants to learn and grow, and we often experience our own resistance when we seek to change. If we are to make true progress, we will have to find a way to overcome our own resistance and quiet down that inner critic. The ideas we explore in this episode of In The Circle will hopefully inspire you to continue to push through your doubts and resistance when your personal experience supports doing so. Are there any ways your inner critic has gotten in the way of your forward progress? It is definitely a valuable inquiry for us all. Tommy discusses: How can I overcome the inner critic? 15. What If The 12-Steps Aren’t For Me?
Welcome to In The Circle. Thank you for being here today. In this episode, we check in with Jeanne, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. She shares about how the 12-steps will always be the foundation of her recovery, but that after a while she felt called to explore alternative paths of healing.  What starts as a question about adopting modern day healing modalities into 12-step recovery turns into a powerful look at what is broken about our approach to recovery in America and what we can do about it.  We take a hard look at some of the problems with the decision to treat addiction with drugs. There are so many options, and it is certainly my prayer that people will explore all the avenues that lead to health and wellness. I advocate for yoga, breath work, athletics, healthy diet, time in community, lots of time in nature, and of course, I think people should get naturally high every single day. We want to thank Jeanne today for asking this question and bringing so much to the table that we can explore. It's absolutely critical that we take stock of why we do what we do, especially when it comes to our decisions about healthcare and the wellbeing of all people. Tommy discusses: Considering the 12-step doctrine Ways modern treatment approaches fall short Is the world ready for new modalities of healing? Poorly designed institutions and agencies  Advocate for healing, not against broken systems Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 14. Getting Your Spark Back in Recovery
Welcome back to In The Circle. It is always such a blessing to sit and explore with you all. Today, we check in with Damon, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. He asks a deeply revealing question about taking the next step – a bounding leap – in his recovery… I've been sober for a while and have lost my passion. How can I get the fire back?  This is such an important inquiry, one which asks us to look more closely at the reasons we got sober in the first place, and at what is required to continue to walk the path when fear and desperation, which inspired us to change, have since faded away. This exploration is all about the why behind anything that we do, and it is therefore quite relevant to each of us. Tommy discusses: Receiving the gift of desperation Healing the ego Exploring the more subtle levels of detox  Dedicating oneself to greater purpose  Finding joy in the subtle  Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 13. Parenting A Child Struggling With Addiction
In The Circle today, we are sitting with the feelings of powerlessness, worry, and fear that loved ones of those in recovery face. Ann, a member of our Recovery 2.0 program, asks… How can I stay present with my child in recovery when my own fear arises? In exploring this inquiry, we're reminded, first and foremost, that there's no stronger prayer in the universe than a mother's prayer, and that worry doesn't change outcomes – presence does. The simple fact of the matter is that we cannot control what other people do, what they think, where they go, or the decisions they make. But we can be shining examples in their life, demonstrating solutions, and victory, rather than fueling the fires of insecurity and doubt. Tommy discusses: • Why a mother’s prayer is the strongest prayer of them all • Showing up as an example of victory • Shifting your mindset to be in the solution rather than the problem • Connecting with the truth of the situation • Why presence is the key to offering effective support • Getting out of a place of worry and fear Connect with Tommy • @TommyRosen on Instagram • Tommy on Facebook • Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 12. How Can I Heal Trauma and Truly Let Go?
Today on In The Circle, the much-maligned “T” word, trauma, enters the room for a conscious study on healing our hearts and minds. Ken, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community, asks… How can I heal trauma and truly let go?  In this episode, we explore the process of setting ourselves free, particularly from resentments relating to our parents – and I share a few very personal examples from my own life. This is one of those inquiries that is relevant for everyone with a heartbeat. Naturally, we desire to find greater joy in life. And to do so, we must find greater presence. In order to become more present, we must release the past.  Tommy discusses: Returning memories of childhood traumas Conscious parenting and learning from experiences Being cursed by your parents How healing changes shape for all of us Reframing trauma as an opportunity for grace  Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 11. How Do I Overcome The Pressure Of Time And Access The Present Moment?
What a blessing it is, once again, to sit in circle with you all today. In this episode, we field an interesting inquiry from Emily, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. Emily shares that her drive and ambition are getting in the way of her experiencing the fullness of life. On the one hand, we all strive to be better, to have success and better relationships. This inquiry asks us to locate the fine line between too much and too little effort. Can we create space for acceptance and gratitude in the present moment and also pursue our goals and ambitions? How do we balance these seemingly conflicting needs? We also look at the very perplexing concept of linear time and how we can resolve resentments from the past so they don’t color our enjoyment of the here and now.  Tommy discusses: Holding space for drive, ambition, and gratitude Resolving our attachment to the past Connecting to consciousness through meditation  How the linear concept of time warps our perspective  The importance of structure and open time in your schedule  Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 10. How Do I Avoid New Addictive Behaviors in Early Recovery?
Today on In The Circle, Anne, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community, brings a powerful and widely relevant inquiry about addiction as it relates to anyone on the planet. She asks… How do I avoid new addictions in early recovery? Many of us remember the classic arcade game: Whack-A-Mole. You move to quickly strike one down, only for another two, three, four to pop up in its place. Anne, being in the beginning stages of her recovery journey, worries that once she strikes down her most glaring addiction issue, that others may move to take its place in her life.  In today’s conversation, we accept that… Yes, other addictions exist and can be a tempting escape back into past behaviors that were harmful. But we also accept that, in overcoming one, we develop the tools to identify and avoid others. It’s this ever-growing toolbox of lessons and learnings which we then wield in our lives as more connected, more present, and more loving individuals. Tommy discusses: Defining behavioral addiction  Identifying the addiction frequency  Reviewing the Big 6 addictions  Avoiding addiction patterns And using them to set yourself free  Letting go of the unnecessary  Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 9. How Can I Process A Lost Relationship?
Today on In The Circle, we field a heartfelt and powerful inquiry about relationships from Jeff, a member of our Recovery 2.0 community. He asks… What do we do when people in our lives exit, whether by separation, or disagreement, or death? This question cuts to the core of our shared experience as mortal human beings. The nature of our relationships with one another dictates that they end – somehow, some way. But why tie negative feelings and words to something so inevitable? More than death as a means of losing someone, Jeff’s inquiry brings up the idea of lost relationships, both romantic and social – leading us to acknowledge the last few years as being especially turbulent in this area. Ultimately, we find ourselves arriving face to face with the most important relationship, the one with our true self. Tommy discusses: • What happens when you lose someone close to you? • How does the catalyst for such a change impact the process? • Reflecting on the meaning of connection  • Honoring the shifting nature of relationships • Navigating change with integrity and strength Connect with Tommy • @TommyRosen on Instagram • Tommy on Facebook • Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 8. Understanding Relapse: Abstinence vs. True Recovery
Today's thoughtful inquiry comes to us from Elizabeth, as she offers the deeply meaningful subject of relapse for closer inspection. In doing so, we reframe the meaning of the word, removing all shame from its existence, and call in the support of others on the path. Where it’s easy to point blame at a person, a circumstance, even one defining moment – we learn to take a step back, in silence, to assess the many other variables that led to such a moment. In taking responsibility for how we can get there, it becomes easier to avoid the same path. Tommy discusses: • Relapse is not a necessity, even though it's very common • Optionality of relapse outcomes  • Identifying and traveling to different levels of consciousness • How can we avoid relapse? • What are the signs of a relapse? 7. The Power And The Pitfalls Of Grief
Today's inquiry comes to us from Melly, who brings up the topic of grief and loss. We’ll discuss the importance of allowing ourselves to fully feel the waves of grief when it comes up for us. Because grief and loss can lead to relapse in some cases; and it’s essential that we let those feelings in and give ourselves time to process. We will often attach stories to grief; whether it’s losing a child to addiction, not being able to care for a parent in their illness, or not being present when a loved one passes away. These stories stick with us, and cause the grief to stick as well, so we need to learn to release them through our healing process. When we lose people, our way of communicating with them must change. Their form has changed, but their connectedness to us never goes away. Tommy discusses: • The difference between sadness and grief • The stories we attach to grief, and how to release them • How grief affects those who have lost loved ones, children, and animals • Experiencing grief in recovery • Why grief can lead to relapse in some cases • How to navigate grief Connect with Tommy • @TommyRosen on Instagram • Tommy on Facebook • Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 6. Alcohol Is Not Ruining My Life, But I Can’t Stop Drinking
Today’s inquiry is from our community member, Rebecca, who says, "alcohol is not ruining my life, but I can't stop drinking." This is specifically important for those in recovery, and yet relevant for everyone else. Because this inquiry is for the person who does not identify as an alcoholic. This is for the person who isn’t going to necessarily end up at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. This is for the person who is able to stop drinking for a week or two, but find themselves going back to it again, and again, and again. The severe alcoholic in one respect, in one single respect, has it easier than anybody else: because there's no question that they have a problem, and there's no question that they need to change. But we do not agree with the premise that people need to be utterly broken in their life in order to try something new. What if we didn't judge drinking as good or bad? What if we just reflected upon our own experience, our own feelings, and we can make a decision for ourselves from that place? Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing? Tommy discusses: • The concept of a “high bottom” • The definition of a teaching, and how it applies universally • The importance of practice in recovery, and not looking for a specific “end date” • Misunderstandings around alcohol • Light, medium, and heavy drinking Connect with Tommy: • @TommyRosen on Instagram • Tommy on Facebook • Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 5. Can Addiction Ever Be Cured?
Today’s inquiry is from Jacob, and the question that came up for him was… "Is there a cure for addiction?" I want to be clear that I feel that addiction is part of the human condition. We all experience it in some way. We’re all on the spectrum. It was important to me that we go deep on this subject, as I feel this question touches all of us in some way. It’s something that many of us in recovery – and our loved ones – have asked. Jacob’s earnestness and vulnerability in bringing forth this inquiry are so important. Everyone in the circle benefits when anyone demonstrates this kind of depth. Tommy discusses: Is there a “magic pill” to treat addiction?  Tommy’s revolutionary way of thinking about addiction and recovery Alignment with and evolution of 12-steps/AA The definition of addiction Putting a new lens on how you see time and assess your progress Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is a part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 4. How Can We Escape the “Frequency of Addiction”?
The frequency of addiction. Think about those words. Today’s question is “how do you know when you’re in or out of the frequency of addiction?” The member who asked this question gave us an analogy of Russian dolls, where every time you open one and think you’ve reached the end, but you’re greeted with another, and another, and another. Addiction feels like this sometimes. And before you become sober, identifying this frequency and its harmful patterns can seem almost impossible. You can’t think your way into a new level of awareness; it takes practice. But once you commit yourself to this lifelong practice, you’ll start to attract new types of people to you, and new opportunities will become possible for you; all because you changed your frequency. Tommy discusses: His final visit to a casino, its awful energy and environment, and how this led to an epiphany Why people struggling with addiction continue to find themselves in the same unhealthy patterns Why the quality of your sobriety is not a guarantee; you must maintain the practice Why you need to change the frequency around you first, in order to put your body & mind into a state where you can start to identify patterns and make changes Everyone has the power to change their frequency Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 3. In Recovery, What Do We Have To Look Forward To Beyond Abstinence?
Today we have Eduardo offering up an inquiry, which has to do with the idea that different people need different things at different times. At what point in your path of recovery and discovery do you outgrow a practice or routine? Things that have helped you – be it a recovery group or the 12 Steps themselves – will not serve you in perpetuity as you continue to grow and evolve. And so you may feel that it’s time for a change. What awaits us beyond simple abstinence? It’s important to ask ourselves where we’re going, what we should shoot for; and what do we do if and when we find ourselves isolated or separated because instead of taking a step forward through the same revolving door, we take a step up to bigger and bigger questions? Where is the 13th Step?Tommy discusses: Why the Shaman may feel isolated because of their expansive knowledge People who struggle with addiction have the capability, and responsibility, to become a teacher (and why we desperately need them today) The difficulty of stepping away from AA when it stops serving you Evolving from the language of “I am an alcoholic.” Misconception of self-control vs. the choice A conversation with Ram Dass on psychedelics Why happiness is not merely the relief of a craving Two yogic teachings to help maintain an expanded state of consciousness: abhyasa and vairagya Metaphor of dyeing cotton as it relates to recovery and evolution Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not. 2. Can I Be Free From Addiction Once and for All?
In the circle, today, we hear from Recovery 2.0 member, Luis, who asks… Are you ever free from addiction?  His question takes us down an interesting path. We must dissect the perspective of people struggling with addiction, and those struggling in recovery. This inquiry challenges the oft-heard phrase: “once an addict, always an addict.” In this episode we unpack what Tommy Rosen refers to as The Big 6 (main categories of addiction) and the 4 Aggravations (more insidious mental addictions) providing a more hopeful context for healing. We also uncover powerful truths… That you'll be healed from addiction when you no longer seek to be healed from it, when you're no longer looking for a cure; and that a real medicine makes itself obsolete. Thank you for joining us today. I sincerely hope you’re able to benefit from this valuable conversation, and all of our upcoming conversations on the podcast, to aid in your own growth and healing journey.Tommy discusses: Are you ever really "cured" from addiction? Dispelling the adage "once an addict, always an addict" If you could use again with no side effects and no one knowing, would you? The 6 main categories of addiction The 4 aggravations (mental addictions) Why looking for a cure is the wrong approach If you’re “cured” can you partake in drugs and alcohol without overdoing it? 1. Is It Possible For A Person In Recovery To Truly Reach A Place Of Peace?
Theresa is sitting in circle with us today, and she's asked a very important question: is it possible for a person in recovery to truly reach a place of peace and contentment? This incredibly powerful question, it seems to me, is really about the entire human race. Is it possible for any person, whether in recovery or not, to truly find peace and contentment? And yet, when we look at this inquiry through the lens of addiction and recovery, we learn so much about ourselves. Our minds are responsible for some of the problems that we encounter, but our minds also create the solutions. Thoughts lead to impressions, impressions lead to habits, and our habits determine how we act in this world. It’s only by taking action to change these habits that we can move forward into a greater state of awareness and presence. Tommy discusses: Misconceptions of Karma Why anxiety is a habitual response to your environment  Why you may feel that you’re at the mercy of everything around you (a “victim of circumstance”) Solutions for anxiety through forming new, healthier habits How you can shift your focus from the symptom of a problem towards its solution Why you should start enjoying “the thing” instead of “the outcome” Shame, and how it keeps you stuck Connect with Tommy @TommyRosen on Instagram Tommy on Facebook Tommy on TikTok Addiction is part of everyone’s journey, but recovery is not.
