010-Record Review BaDaBoom-All American Pop Review LP
Hey Kids, it’s time for Record Review BaDaBoom. This episode is the 12” Vinyl LP, All American Pop Collection Volume two. Released in 1980. We’re going to start with track one. Louie Louie by the Kingsmen, sung by Jack Ely, who left the group in 1963. I remember hearing Louie Louie on the radio approaching the summer of 1963. My local station WLOF out of Orlando played it non-stop when it broke. It was a cool sound, that intro, which is a Hohner Planet Electric Piano, played through a Sears Alamo amp, my sources tell me. Probably the only time the Louie Louie intro was played like the record. (Play-stop) Another oddity about hearing this record, something I didn’t notice in 1963, was how the drums solo through the guitar solo, just listen. (Play stop) There are several YouTube videos with Ely and The Kingsmen. I saw the Kingsmen, minus Ely, as a teenager, the summer of 1965 in Jacksonville, Florida. Minus Ely, they seemed old and boring to me, a 15-year old music fan. OK, here’s a needle drop of the rest of side one. (Play-stop) Here’s side two starting with the 1962 hit, Lets Dance by Chris Montez, that’s Carol Kaye on guitar, Ray Johnson on Philicorda organ, Ray Pohlman on bass. I bought this mainly for Louie Louie, but still it was a nice little listening journey through the late 50s, early 60s. I enjoyed it. Worth the $1.00 I spent on this LP. 009-Record Review BaDaBoom - James Gang LP Review
BaDaBoom, I’m Michael Welch. This episode features the 3rd and final studio album by James Gang, title Thirds. The Joe Walsh period ended with the live album James Gang Live in Concert. This album was released mid 1971. It includes their hit Walk Away. (play) This is an excellent demonstration of analog to vinyl from the 70s. The sound is dry, warm and fat. Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals. There’s an oddity on this record, Yadig? An All Blues jazz jam. Joe Walsh playing guitar and piano, Dale Peters-acoustic bass and vibraphone, Jim Fox, drums with brushes. (play) I saw and heard The James Gang in Nashville, probably December of 1970. I was playing in a group from Little Rock called Merging Traffic. We were in town to play a gig at Vanderbilt University. The James Gang show was at an auditorium, close to the Ryman, that’s what I remember. I had a nice seat in a fold up chair on the floor, close to the stage. Also on the bill was Sha Na Na and Rare Earth. I was unfamiliar with James Gang, they sounded great, much like their album, fat full, dry and funky. The cover of this record has the drumset I remember Jim Fox playing. A great sounding set of Rogers with the front head open and dampened, like that dry 70s studio sound. I was certainly impressed with Joe Walsh, a gifted talent. Here’s “again”, a beautiful tune written by Joe Walsh. (play) Dale Peters has a nice tune with backing vocals by The Sweet Inspirations, White Man /Black Man. (play) Live My Life Again, written by drummer Jim Fox. Every tune on this record has something in it that I like. My $2.00 investment into this LP was well spent. BaDaBoom https://quadragrip.com/

008-Record Review BaDaBoom-The Young Rascals LP Review
Welcome to Record Review BaDaBoom, I’m Michael Welch. This episode features The Rascals, known then as The Young Rascals, their debut album released March 1966 on the Atlantic Records label. It was number 15 on the Billboard chart. Most of the tunes are cover tunes. Unlike many west coast groups, The Beach Boys and The Byrds, The Rascals played their own instrumental tracks and sang. Lets listen to side one, track one slow down. (Play-stop) I had this record as a teenager. Dino Danelli had a very mature interesting style and sound. The group didn’t have a bass player; Felix Cavaliere plays Hammond B3, Gene Cornish, guitar, Eddie Brigati, vocals. Categorized as Blue-eyed soul. Here’s, Do You Feel It. The tune that elevated their popularity is Good Lovin, Good Lovin was played by every teenage cover band and nightclub musician. I hadn’t started playing professionally when it came out, but I saw many drummers play it. You needed some chops to play it like Dino. He could play and simultaneously, twirl his sticks, something I never felt the need to do. The 1966 Bob Dylan is still a very popular artist; this is Gene singing Like A Rolling Stone. He sounds a bit like Sonny and Cher. Mustang Sally, a lounge lizard classic. Why stop there, here’s In The Midnight Hour. I saw the Rascals in 1967 at the Kemp Coliseum, in Orlando, the only time I ever went there. Opening was a local group, Plant Life. In 1967, I had just got a drum set. The Rascals tune Groovin, was number one on the charts at the time. Dino came out front and played conga drum on the tune. I enjoyed hearing them play live. I’ve enjoyed revisiting this record, which I paid $2.00 for. It’s a good sounding album. BaDaBoom https://quadragrip.com/

006-Record Review BaDaBoom-Oldies But Goodies LP Review
Record Review BaDaBoom, I’m Michael Welch. This is a review of a compilation LP, Oldies But Goodies Volume 6, released in 1962. I bought this record because it includes the 1961 hit by Dee Clark called Raindrops, Record labels produced many of these compilation records with their own artist for distribution to radio stations. This LP seems to be produced for record buyers. The jacket has photos of all 6 record volumes with the songs artist and title. Mainly tunes from the late 50s. It also includes liner notes by Art Laboe, a Los Angeles Disc-Jockey, who coined the term, “Oldies But Goodies”. Here’s a quick needle drop of the hits. As I mentioned, I bought this record for $1.00 because it has Raindrops by Dee Clark. In the mid 60s, I think probably 1965 or 1966, I was attending this teen club in Orlando called the Tiki Club; it was where all of the best local and national groups played. I went to the club, it was a Saturday or Sunday afternoon event, and not knowing whom the band was. It was Dee Clark. In 1965, this was mainly a club for teenage white kids, Dee was the first R and B or soul singer of color I’d seen and heard. They sounded like adult professionals, much different than the music performed there at the time, which included British Invasion bands, Beatles, Stones, Who, etc. Playing guitar was Charlie Robinson. I would eventually meet and play all kinds of music with Charlie. Charlie’s one of my favorite guitarist and a walking history book of music from his many gigs starting in the 60s, playing the Chitlin Circuit with Dee Clark, who at the time was a major artist on the Vee Jay label. Here’s Raindrops. That’s it, till next time, BaDaBoom Michael Welch is an author, educator, producer, and publisher. He also plays the drumset. 005-Record Review BaDaBoom-The Turtles Lp Review
Welcome to Record Review, Badaboom. , todays feature is The Turtles Greatest Hits, released in 1967 on the White Whale label. I’m Michael Welch, this is Record Review BaDaBoom. Lets drop the needle on a few tracks. I saw The Turtles live, sometime around 1967, the year they had their major hits. The venue was the Orlando Youth Center. I stood on the floor below the stage, they sounded good. John Barbata is a very good drummer. There are numerous videos on YouTube with singers Howard Kayman and Mark Volman as Flo and Eddie in Frank Zappa’s ensemble. I liked the Turtles songs, they had a good beat and you could dance to it, if that was your thing. There was always one highlight for me, as a drummer. When I heard “She’d Rather Be With Me” on the radio, there was a snare drum roll that caught my ear. It was something I definitely could not play at the time. I remember when I saw them, watching to see if Johnny Barbata would reproduce it. This is it. There are YouTube videos of this tune; you can also see Johnny Barbata, in 1967, with a second high hat. I asked my drumming guru friend, Bobby Caldwell about it. Another $2.00 well spent. I’m Michael Welch, BaDaBoom Michael Welch is an author, educator, producer, and publisher. 004-Record Review BaDaBoom-Billy Stewart Lp Review
Hey Kid’s, it’s time for Record Review BaDaBoom; I’m your host Michael Welch. In this episode I talk about Billy Stewart, the Unbelievable LP, released in 1966. I remember driving in my car, in Orlando, when this came on the radio, it’s Billy Stewart singing the George Gershwin composition, Summertime, playing drums on this album is Maurice White from Earth, Wind and Fire. Dig it. This 45 record became a Top 40 hit on both pop and R& B charts. This LP, called Unbelievable is rare on Ebay. This single tune, Billy’s version of Summertime is the only heavy backbeat tune on the record, the others could be classified as jazz standards, Foggy Day, Misty, Moon River, My Funny Valentine. Billy Stewart and this album was a Chess Records project, great Chicago musicians. You can hear the production with acoustic bass, vibraphone, piano, brass, woodwinds and tight written arrangements. On this record, Billy Stewart is a Jazz Singer. Billy Stewart continued to record on the Chess label. He was killed in a car accident in 1970, at the age of 32. I was glad to find this Billy Stewart, Chess Records LP for $2.00 at my local flea market. Till next time, BaDaBoom Michael Welch is an author, educator, producer, and publisher. 003-Record Review BaDaBoom-Paul Revere & The Raiders LP Review
I’m Michael Welch, this is Record Review BaDaBoom, this episode features the LP by Paul Revere and The Raiders. It’s the Greatest Hits LP from 1967 on Columbia Records, produced by Terry Melcher. I watched this group regularly on TV each afternoon, on Dick Clark’s Where The Action Is. This group certainly got a lot of exposure during the mid 60s. Its music folklore that they recorded Louie Louie before The Kingsmen, here’s their version. (play-stop) Here’s Steppin Out. In 1966 they had a hit with the tune, Kicks, the lyrics known as one of the first anti-drug songs in popular music. Hal Blaine plays drums with other wrecking crew musicians on this and others tunes. (play-stop) Here’s Just Like Me, which to me sounds like The Kinks, All Day All Night , What can I say about this group, they were successful in the music business? It was the 60s. I think they were basically Mark Lindsay backed by The Wrecking Crew. Here’s a little closer, Good Thing. That’s it; I enjoyed listening to this record, Hal Blaine play nice. It was worth my $2.00 investment. BaDaBoom Michael Welch is an author, educator, producer, and publisher. He also plays the drumset. 002-Record Review BaDaBoom-Les Paul Mary Ford Lp Review
This is Record Review BaDBoom, I’m Michael Welch, this episode features Les Paul and Mary Ford. When I was a 7 your old kid, growing up in the country corn fields outside Springfield, Ohio, I listened to all kinds of music streaming from the radio or black and white TV variety shows. When I heard the 1951, #1 record “How High The Moon” I detected something different about it. Lets listen. As an adult musician, I would learn about the multi-track techniques of Les Paul. Hearing that tune was similar to my hearing Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring. The record I’ve acquired for this review is called “Warm and Wonderful” recorded in 1962 on Columbia Records. Most of the tunes are rhythmically slow 2 beat styles. Warm Acoustic Bass without drums. Most are vocal standards with a couple instrumentals. It’s a nicely recorded session without any of the multi-track vocals like How High The Moon. There are overdubbed guitar parts with tape delay echo, but it’s really a tight-clean production of vocal and instrumental tunes. At times, Mary Ford’s phrasing reminds me of Diana Krall, very nice. Les would have been a great addition to her trio or quartet. That’s it, I really enjoyed this album, and it sounds great playing on my turntable. 001-Record Review BaDaBoom-The Buckinghams Lp Review
BaDaBoom, it’s another episode of Record Review BaDaBoom. I have on my turntable, from Chicago, The Buckingham’s Greatest Hits LP, released in 1969 on Columbia. Produced by James William Guercio, known for producing The Buckingham’s, Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears. I’m going to drop the needle on side one. Woo, what is that you say, well, it’s Charles Ive’s Central Park In The Dark” which you probably didn’t hear on the 45 single radio version. Continuing on, to side two, here’s mercy mercy mercy written by jazz pianist, composer for cannonball adderly and weather report, Joe Zawinul. There’s reference that the rhythm section on this tune is drummer John Guerin and Carol Kaye on bass. Carol has Mercy Mercy Mercy listed on her web site discography. I never saw the Buckingham’s live. Listening to this record, I hear the similarities in the production of The Buckingham’s and Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago’s drummer, Danny Seraphine, plays and sounds much like The Buckingham’s drummer, John Poulos. Many Buckingham’s tunes had really cool drum breaks and fill. They are a bit more funkier than other bands in the 60s. I’ve enjoyed listening to this LP. $2.00 well spent, I’m Michael Welch BaDaBoom Michael Welch is an author, educator, producer, and publisher. He also plays the drumset.
