RBDS9 040 – The Maquis, Part 1 (S2E20)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Maquis, Part 1 Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 20: The Maquis, Part 1. In this episode we have a special guest star! Attiba Royster, local artist (local to us) and big Deep Space Nine fan, drops by the podcast! He’s here to discuss the two-episode arc introducing The Maquis. In Part 1, we meet Cal Hudson (played by Bernie Casey), an old friend of Sisko’s who appears a bit disillusioned with the Cardassian treaty and not loving his new job in the DMZ. We learn some really important things in this episode – like opposites do not attract and there is not a thin line between love and hate (at least that’s what Kim tells us, so it must be true). The Maquis This episode starts with somebody blowing up a Cardassian ship and ends with a kidnapping of Gul Dukat (honestly, they can keep him). But mostly the episode is full of a lot of shenanigans in the demilitarized zone which makes nobody happy. The Cardassians aren’t happy to have Federation citizens in their territory and the Federation citizens aren’t happy that they’re getting slowly picked off one by one. Sisko’s friend Cal isn’t happy with his new crappy job and Sisko isn’t happy that he has to spend more time with Gul Dukat. So overall, this treaty is not going well. Attiba Royster You can learn more about our friend and podcast guest Attiba on his bio page. And if you want to get in touch with him about his art or anything else, his contact page is here. attibaroyster.com is his main website, but you can also see some of his horror-related work at horrorgasmsd.com. Enjoy! What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet and The Circle. Or you can also listen to the previous episode in the series: Blood Oath. Next time… We dive into Season 2 Episode 20 of DS9: The Maquis, Part 2. RBDS9 039 – Blood Oath (S2E19)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Blood Oath Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 19: Blood Oath. In this episode, we meet some very old Klingons played by actors who originated their roles in the original series! We meet Kor played by John Colicos, Koloth played by William Campbell and Kang played by Michael Ansara. Blood Oath Kor, Kang and Koloth descend on the station to carry out a blood oath they took many years ago with Curzon Dax. They are surprised to find Curzon is now Jadzia and she still feels the obligation to seek vengeance against another old dude called The Albino. They try to release her from the oath, but she insists on coming along for the ride. Is today a good day to die? What’s this rebinge thing? RBDS9 038 – Profit and Loss (S2E18)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Profit and Loss Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 18: Profit and Loss. In this episode, we have Cardassian fugitives who don’t believe the government should be run by the military and Quark has a girlfriend. Everything is upside down! Special guest star Mary Crosby from “Who Shot JR?” fame stops by the station as Quark’s Cardassian (!) ex to add to the long list of famous guest stars. Profit and Loss Some Cardassian fugitives are accidentally stranded on the station causing some consternation for Sisko. Not only are they fugitives, but one of them is an ex of Quark’s and he seems prepared to give up his life on the station to follow her. For his trouble, she accidentally shoots him…but don’t worry, everything is fine and she feels bad. Garak sees an opportunity to turn in the fugitives and regain favor with Cardassia…but alas…nothing is ever that easy on DS9. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 037 – Playing God (S2E17)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Playing God Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 17: Playing God. In this episode Dax gets the dullest intern imaginable. Kira and Miles are trying to rid the station of Cardiassian voles and Sisko is forced into a life or death decision because we beamed something foreign onto the station. AGAIN. Playing God This week we learn that Curzon is really King of the jerks. I mean maybe we knew that already, but we get more evidence when we find that he emotionally abused young people in the training program. Jadzia tries to break the cycle with her intern and she takes him on a ride through the wormhole where she learns that is as boring as dishwater. Also while flying around, they pick up some kind of seaweed or maybe gum on the outside of the ship. It turns out that it’s not gum it’s actually a proto-universe which they accidentally advanced by taking it through the wormhole. Ooooops! Now what do we do? Let it evolve and take over the Alpha Quadrant or throw it back where they found it and pretend like it never happened!? What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 036 – Shadowplay (S2E16)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Shadowplay Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 16: Shadowplay. In this episode Odo and Dax happen upon a little village of people wearing funny hats and white robes. Their sensors aren’t functioning as they try to figure out a mystery involving disappearing villagers. And we finally have some B-stories back at the station! We also have some familiar-faced guest stars in this episode in Kenneth Mars and Kenneth Toby. In what shadows do we play? Odo and Dax work together to solve the mystery of the week when they learn of the disappearing hat people. And we all know Odo loves a good mystery (especially when it involves finding people); and he also makes a new friend in a little girl who wonders about Odo’s parents. Back on the station, some smaller stories are happening. Kira hooks up with her old friend Vedek Bareil (maybe fulfilling that naked prophecy???) and loses her focus on the scheming Quark. And Sisko starts Jake on an apprenticeship with Miles where we learn of Jake’s ambivalence toward a career in Starfleet. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 035 – Paradise (S2E15)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Paradise Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 14: Paradise. In this episode Sisko and Miles are on an away mission together and end up trapped on a planet where technology doesn’t work. We do a lot of over analysis of this episode, especially focusing on leadership (good and bad). While we’ve had several recent episodes where there just wasn’t much to talk about, this one finally breaks that mold! Paradise? Sisko and Miles beam down to a planet hampered by a rogue duonetic field. No technology works, including comms back to the runabout. We find a small group of humans who crash-landed here 10 years earlier and gave up on technology and established a new community. Is this what everyone wants or are they simply following the will of their strong-willed leader Alixus? Sisko gets into a battle of wills with the cult leader as he puts his life on the line to prove a point. Will Kira and Dax rescue them in time? Oh and be sure to stay tuned all the way to the end for a meowy outtake. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 034 – Whispers (S2E14)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Whispers Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 14: Whispers. In this episode Miles returns from an away mission to find that everyone is acting a bit squirrely. He can’t get a straight answer from anyone about what’s going on and even Molly is behaving strangely. Since Odo is away, he starts listening around corners and doing his own investigating! Whispers This is a flashback episode which starts with Miles recording a personal log in a runabout as he escapes DS9. Then he flashes back to everyone acting strangely, especially his wife and daughter! But he’s also getting funny reactions from Sisko, Kira and some new Starfleet NPC. Additionally there is a lot of whispering going on around him and no one seems to give him a straight answer. So Miles sets out to figure out what happened on the station while he was away. Miles keeps it together for quite while, but when both Odo (who newly arrives at the station halfway through the episode) and Jake begin to react to him differently, he panics. Has it gotten everyone? Is this a major plot that has infected all of Starfleet? Well it’s nothing that a lot of double-sweet coffee and a sneaky escape can’t fix. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to season 1 and some of our favorite episodes like Duet and Progress. Or you can also listen to the previous episode in the series: Armageddon Game. RBDS9 033 – Armageddon Game (S2E13)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Armageddon Game Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 13: Armageddon Game. In this episode we have some Julian/Miles angst, a deadly bio-weapon and some shockingly crazy hair. No seriously, LOOK AT THE HAIR. Armageddon Game Julian and Miles are on a mission to help the T’Lani and the Kelleruns destroy their stockpile of deadly biomechanical gene disruptor weapons (called Harvestors). Something goes very wrong just as they destroy the last of the weapons when armed thugs break into the lab and kill everyone (except our heroes, of course). Back on DS9, everyone believes Miles and Julian are dead except for one person who finds it hard to believe that Miles was drinking coffee in the afternoon. And that’s all it takes for Sisko and Dax to start an investigation of their own. Meanwhile, Julian is just trying to keep Miles alive long enough to make it home. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 032 – The Alternate (S2E12)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Alternate Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 12: The Alternate. In this episode the Bajoran scientist who studied Odo arrives at the station and everyone keeps calling him Odo’s dad. Everyone except Odo, that is! Dr. Mora is played by guest star James Sloyan who has played other characters in the Star Trek universe! The Alternate While everyone is annoying Odo by calling Dr. Mora his dad, there is a mystery to be solved. Odo, Dr. Mora and Dax bring a life form aboard that seems to be somewhat related to Odo. When that life form escapes from the lab and mysterious things start happening around the station, Odo is on the hunt for a monster. But oh snap, the monster just may be Odo himself. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. RBDS9 031 – Rivals (S2E11)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Rivals Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 11: Rivals. In this episode someone new is hanging out on the station and as usual, we don’t think to blame him immediately for a new problem we have. Guest star Chris Sarandon plays Martus Mazur as a slightly smarmy El-Aurian who likes to charm little old ladies out of their money. But luck isn’t always on his side. Rivals We have two pairs of rivals in this episode. First there is Quark trying to stop Martus from taking his business when the visitor builds a very popular casino on the Promenade. Then we have Julian and Miles competing for worst racquetball outfit. And it’s a toss up! What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 030 – Sanctuary (S2E10)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Sanctuary Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 10: Sanctuary. In this episode we beam some flaky skinned people into Ops without asking ourselves whether or not we should beam flaky skinned people into Ops! Why do we do that? Fortunately, they don’t bring a new virus to the station, but they do bring a little chaos as the universal translator struggles with their language. But never fear, we eventually get that working and we learn that our visitors are not alone! Sanctuary? The flaky skinned folks turn out to be Skrreans in search of a new home. They’ve come from the other side of “the eye” in search of a mythical place called Kentanna. The Skrreans were enslaved for centuries until the Dominion conquered their enslavers. In this dramatic story of refugees, Kira finds herself struggling to help everyone and still do her job. Join us for our analysis of Sanctuary! What’s this rebinge thing? RBDS9 029 – Second Sight (S2E9)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Second Sight Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 9: Second Sight. In this episode Sisko is seeing double. He keeps bumping into a mysterious woman on the promenade to whom he feels very drawn. The mystery deepens when she doesn’t reveal any information about herself and she keeps disappearing. Let’s get Odo to help! Second Sight A terraforming scientist played by Richard Kiley arrives at the station with his gigantic ego and young wife played by Salli Richardson-Whitfield. The mystery of the episode unravels as Sisko realizes the scientist’s wife is a doppelganger for a women he keeps running into on the promenade….yet the two women are somehow unaware of each other. Or are they!? What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. RBDS9 028 – Necessary Evil (S2E8)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Necessary Evil Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 8: Necessary Evil. In this episode we appear to flashback to a time when DS9 was part of a Dickens play…no not quite that far…but the station is under Cardassian rule and it’s all pretty grim. Odo meets Dukat, Kira and even Quark for the very first time as Dukat strong-arms him into investigating the murder of a Bajoran man. Necessary Evil Quark gets himself into some trouble early on and ends up clinging to life in the infirmary. Investigating this attack sends Odo back in time to the first crime he investigated on the station — a much darker and (apparently) bluer time when little orphan children sat on the promenade eating gruel. Well, sort of. We flash backwards and forwards quite a bit as Odo manages to solve the new crime and the very old one that eluded him 5 years ago. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to season 1 and some of our favorite episodes like Battle Lines and In the Hands of the Prophets. RBDS9 027 – Rules of Acquisition (S2E7)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Rules of Acquisition Hello Star Trek fans! We have arrived at episode 7: Rules of Acquisition. There’s a whole lot of Ferengi going on in this one. Maybe a little bit too much? But we also have Tongo, The X-Files and lobe augmentation to discuss. Thank goodness for some humor here and there because otherwise this episode hits some very low points. Just going to issue a warning here folks….we are pretty hard on the blatant sexism in this episode. You’ve been warned! (I’d like to apologize for how many times I sigh on this recording. -kv) 258 Rules In this episode, we meet Pel, a Ferengi with a secret who is well-versed in the Rules of Acquisition. Pel is a new waiter at Quark’s but Rom is not impressed. We also get more of the Nagus from season 1 as played by Wallace Shawn and we are introduced to a new race from the Gamma Quadrant called the Dosi. The Dosi are into red face paint and being generally scary. There are some important developments in this episode, but also just some bad bad bad writing. Tune in for our take on rules of Acquisition. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 026 – Melora (S2E6)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Melora Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 6: Melora! Ensign Melora (Daphne Ashbrook) from a low-gravity planet arrives on the station and she needs some special accommodations to get around. Bashir takes an extreme interest in her and wants to help increase her mobility and he also wants to date her (because he’s Bashir). Meanwhile, Crazy Joe Davola is after Quark for some shady dealings from their past. Melora In this episode, Ensign Melora is a little touchy about being treated differently or as a medical problem. We talk about the disappointing stereotypes at play here, especially in the beginning of the episode. We also wonder why in the accommodations they made to improve accessibility, they failed to turn on the lights in the hallway outside of her quarters (I mean check the image below)! And finally, we cover the B-story of a dude out to kill Quark…though really he doesn’t try that hard. Dark Hallway in Melora What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 025 – Cardassians (S2E5)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Cardassians Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 5: Cardassians! This episode focuses on war orphans left behind by the Cardassians when they withdrew from Bajor. Sisko finds himself in the middle of a custody battle that seems to have piqued the interest of Gul Dukat. Dukat seems overly concerned about the plight of a single orphan that he (supposedly) didn’t even know existed up until now. Lots of drama and also another recognizable guest star in Robert Mandan. Cardassians: Garek, Dukat and Rugal…oh my… An orphaned Cardassian “child” (and I use that term loosely as the actor was in his mid 20s, but playing a 13 year old) turns up at the station. Garek takes a particular interest in him and pays the price when the kid bites him. This sets off a string of events that involves several Dukat phone calls, Sisko in his PJs, some fun banter between Bashir and Garak, a quick trip to a Bajoran orphanage and a weighty custody hearing. Join us as we discuss the development of the Garak-Bashir relationship, the sliminess of Dukat and the purpleness of Sisko’s PJs. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to season 1 and some of our favorite episodes like In the Hands of the Prophets and Duet. Or you can also listen to our previous episode (a really good one): The Siege. RBDS9 024 – Invasive Procedures (S2E4)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Invasive Procedures Hello everyone! Welcome to Season 2 episode 4: Invasive Procedures! Hot off the 3-part season opener, we slide into a standalone episode starring none other than Lionel Luthor…well actually it’s John Glover who is well known for playing Lionel Luthor on Smallville and most importantly LA slimeball Brice Cummings in Scrooged (his most important role). Because the station has been evacuated (so we ARE capable of evacuating!!) , DS9 is being run by a skeleton crew leaving it vulnerable to an attack. And Lionel attacks! And as always, the crew is unprepared and cannot come up with a useful plan! Argh!!! What Invasive Procedures? Lionel Luthor (also known as Verad in this episode) has come to kidnap a member of the crew…well part of a member of the crew. He wants Dax, not Jadzia, just Dax. He’s a trill without a symbiont and he’s come to rectify that. And let’s just say…this does not go well for anyone. The usual and not so usual We cover the usual (bad hair) and the not so usual (Kira getting beat up by someone). Something has gone wrong with the hair in season 2 except for some killer bangs back in episode 2. But we are all a bit frizzy or in Lionel Luther’s case we’ve had a very unflattering bowl cut. Questionable hair is a common thing on this show, what’s not common is someone getting the better of Kira in a fight! She takes out a big Cardassian in episode 1 of this season, but here she gets taken out by Verad’s tough as nails girlfriend. It is alarming! RBDS9 023 – The Siege (S2E3)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Siege Hello everyone! Welcome to Season 2 episode 3: The Siege! This is the action-packed finale of the 3-parter that opened season 2. We continue on with our high-powered guest stars of Louise Fletcher, Frank Langella and Richard Beymer though only 2 of them are coming out of this episode alive! And we finally see some teamwork both on the station and on an away mission and it’s quite a ride! The Siege on the station Steven Weber, from Wings fame, leads the f-troop in an invasion of DS9. Sisko tries to hold down the fort until Kira and Dax deliver the Cardassian-involvement evidence to the chamber of ministers down on Bajor. So while Sisko is keeping everyone alive on the station (despite the best efforts of Colonel Wings), Kira and Dax are dodging attacks in a sub-impulse bucket of bolts! So much action! The Hair Just one more thing…we may mention the hair in this episode a few times. 90s Hair in The Siege What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 022 – The Circle (S2E2)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Circle Hello everyone! It’s time for Season 2 episode 2: The Circle! This is the second episode in a 3-parter and we are digging it so far. We’ve got all of our high-powered guest stars here in Louise Fletcher, Frank Langella and Richard Beymer. Plus we’ve got migraine triggers, naked prophecies, the axis of evil and great bangs. Oh yeah and we also debate the greatest scene (so far) of DS9. Kim says yes. James says no. Tune in to find out which scene it is. Just who is running The Circle? Minister Jaro, the power behind The Circle, reveals his nefarious plans in this episode and everything is coming together for him. He’s got his scary ally in the Sydney Opera House-sporting Evil Vedek Winn and he’s got a stockpile of weapons. Odo is searching for the source of the weapons, everyone is sad Kira is leaving and Kira is searching for the meaning of her naked migraine vision. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. RBDS9 021 – The Homecoming (S2E1)
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Homecoming We are back! And it’s time for Season 2 episode 1: The Homecoming! We finished season 1 on a high note with 3 good episodes in a row; so how does season 1 start? Well it starts with the first of a 3-parter and some high-octane guest stars. We meet Minister Jaro played by Tony award winning actor Frank Langella and also Li Nalas played by Golden Globe nominated actor Richard Beymer. And we also get a name for the cafeteria: it’s the replimat (this seems like a critical development). Just whose homecoming is it? In this episode, Kira and Miles are on a secret mission to rescue a Bajoran prisoner of war named Li Nalas. Li is revered as a war hero on Bajor and when Kira finds out he’s still alive she feels he’s the only one who can unite a fractured Bajor. Sisko agrees and this 3-part story is underway. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to season 1 and some of our favorite episodes like Progress. Or pick out your favorites and least favorites and listen to our take. You can also just catch up by tuning into our season 1 wrap up episode.
