How Do I Get Started with Bitcoin?
Rapp Report episode 211 How to get started with Bitcoin is the topic of this episode. Welcome to Andrew Rappaport’s Rapp Report, where we provide Biblical interpretation and application! The show is a ministry of Striving for Eternity and the Christian Podcast Community. In today’s episode, host Andrew Rappaport is joined by friend and Pastor Jim Osman of Kootenai Community Church in Idaho for part two of the conversation on bitcoin started in the last episode!  The hosts of the Bitcoin and the Bible podcast – Dave, Simon, and Will – join us again to discuss bitcoin, focusing today on the practical side of starting to use bitcoin.   Before turning to practical advice, though, Jim asks what will keep bitcoin from inflation or from dropping in value.  Will explains that people continue buying bitcoin because it’s a superior form of money, and they will ultimately have the ability to consume all available bitcoin supply.  This dynamic, grounded in the fact that value is subjective and based on market needs, listeners can be assured that the value of bitcoin will not go to 0.  With regard to inflation, Will describes the way that bitcoin operates with a hard cap of 21 million, and how the bitcoin system is designed with a kind of self-regulation because it’s in every bitcoin holder’s best interest to hold others to the rules of the system.   Turning to some possible concerns and responses to them, the group first considers whether or not the bitcoin cap will pose a problem.  Even when the cap is reached, there will be plenty of bitcoin and sufficient divisibility to ensure global commerce can exist on a digital system.  And while some people are wary of bitcoin’s fluctuations in market value, the current fiat system is over-engineered to avoid volatility.  Volatility, however, is a sign of life, and actually provides a reason for us to trust bitcoin!  The change in the bitcoin market is rooted in the fact that the market is free and open, and so at each moment, the dollar price of bitcoin is determined by willing buyers and sellers.  While the primary reason people put their money in banks is to be able to move it digitally, bitcoin facilitates this movement even better than banks; it allows for the transfer of money without bank control and with great speed.   As the conversation progresses, the group considers what bitcoin mining is.  At its most basic level, this mining involves grouping pending transactions into a block and finding the random number to make the block valid.  The process leaves a track of work that demonstrates the history of transactions and is done with a specially purposed computer.  The sort of computer required to mine (an ASIC miner) helps to bolster the security of the process, and some bitcoin users have also elected to study quantum computing, which is expected to protect bitcoin in the more technologically-advanced future.   Dave, Simon, and Will encourage listeners to lean into bitcoin rather than other cryptocurrencies, and the next topic of conversation is the rationale behind this selectivity.  Some cryptocurrencies are trying to be money, and others are not doing so, and in general, money wants to converge on a single best form of money.  At this point, bitcoin is the predominant form of digital money; the choice cycle pushes bitcoin value up and down, and the positioning of bitcoin at the pinnacle of the cryptocurrency world gives it a lot of security.  Other forms of cryptocurrency don’t work well because the incentive behind them (the driver of crypto outcomes!) won’t work, and some of them are even built of systems that allow the rich and powerful to rewrite the rules.   Now, assuming a person is convinced to give bitcoin a shot, the glaring question still remains: How can someone get set up on bitcoin?  Fortunately, there are great resources (including a Startup Guide and many others on BitcoinandtheBible.com!) to help lead the way, and though there are things to learn, the process is not as difficult as it might seem.  The work of learning offers great value, including security for personal finances and opportunities for Christians to ultimately educate their families, transfer both wisdom and wealth to the next generation, and practically love others in monetary ways.   The simplest way to begin is by setting up an account with a company that facilitates the purchase of bitcoin.  This sort of account requires access to some of a user’s banking information, though, so would-be users must first determine what level of privacy they require.  If they decide to set up an account, Dave, Simon, and Will encourage them to stick with companies that work with only bitcoin, rather than with various forms of cryptocurrency.  For relatively small transactions, a company like Strike is a strong option, and users may simply take money from a bank account and buy bitcoin.  The bitcoin will be in the custody of the company facilitating the purchase, but the next step in using bitcoin would likely be using a phone or cold wallet to take personal custody of the bitcoin.  Contrary to common fears, losing a phone or other device with bitcoin on it will not spell the end of the money!  Bitcoin resides on a network, but a device, so it will be accessed using a backup phrase from different devices.   For now, in the United States, bitcoin is treated as a capital asset, and functions as a savings technology.  People can buy and hold it for the time being, and can easily go between dollars and bitcoin (though transferring from bitcoin to dollars must be reported on taxes).  But the bitcoin space is growing with regard to the financial system, and bitcoin is already starting to impact lending and purchasing spaces.  Now is the time to seek education on bitcoin, because it seems inevitable that we will at some point transition from our current system – a debt-based Ponzi scheme – to a bitcoin standard.  Bitcoin will, it seems, follow the trend of other growing technologies; demand and cost will rise, and it will eventually become the hard money that drives other money out.  El Salvador has already accepted it as legal money, and Dave, Simon, and Will expect to see the US and other nations follow a similar trajectory!   The conversation wraps up with specific resource recommendations, an encouragement to educate oneself about bitcoin in order to help lead others, and a final personal commendation of the guests.  Be sure to tune in next time as we take on the topic of angels!   Timestamps: 0:31 – Welcome to today’s episode – Part two with the hosts of Bitcoin and the Bible! 2:47 – Conversation kicks off with questions of inflation and value loss. 7:55 – With a hard cap of 21 million, will there be enough bitcoin? 11:55 – Causes of volatility and how digital money transfer is better with bitcoin 16:16 – What is bitcoin mining, and why is bitcoin the best cryptocurrency? 26:52 – The discussion shifts to getting started with bitcoin. 38:46 – Bitcoin’s place in the world of currency, and the problem of today’s financial system. 49:14 – What will the future of bitcoin look like? 50:53 – The guests offer book recommendations. 53:45 – Final commendation of the guests and their resources, and a plug for the next episode!   Links: Listen to part 1 of this two-part series: What is Bitcoin? What is Bitcoin?
Rapp Report episode 210 Welcome to Andrew Rappaport’s Rapp Report, where we provide Biblical interpretation and application. The show is a ministry of Striving for Eternity and the Christian Podcast Community. On today’s episode, host Andrew Rappaport is joined by friend and Pastor Jim Osman of Kootenai Community Church in Idaho. Unlike our usual episodes, we will be in discussion with another podcast from the Christian Podcast Community, Bitcoin and the Bible, to discuss the issues of money, Bitcoin and the church. Join us for part one of this two-part episode!   To begin, the hosts of Bitcoin and the Bible introduce themselves and their show, the heart of which encourages Christians all around the world with the message that God has provided for us. With the great reset underway and the worldly transitions taking place, it is incumbent upon the church to put ourselves in a position to thrive going forward. Dave, Simon and Will are members of Kootenai Community Church.   Most people have no concept or Biblical understanding of currency, why we have it and how we should view it. At the very beginning, God created Adam and Eve and gave them the job of tending to His garden. Thus, work is built into the human condition as a good and noble thing given by God. The fruit of our labor can be traded amongst one another. It didn’t take long for the human population to realize a medium for exchange was needed. Thus, money is a way to facilitate trade and increase the prosperity of a society. Today, Dave explains, money is borrowed into creation and is really just a claim on a debt obligation. We have now found ourselves in a situation in which the debt has spiraled out of control and we are in need of a new monetary system to reset.   In a free market system, mediums of exchange must be divisible and recognizable. The value of currency differs greatly from place to place, depending on the needs of the population. Therefore, money does not have intrinsic value but is dependent on time, society, and circumstance. Money is desired due to its flexibility and allowance of other goods and services from the economy. Some Christians believe that money is inherently evil and vain. However, money is a morally neutral mechanism of storing labor. It is the greed of money that makes it evil. God refers to Abraham, who was rich in cattle, as a righteous man. Thus we are led to believe that He has given us permission to use the money he has allowed us to choose freely in a way that honors and glorifies Him.   The fiat system refers to the present operating system in which the money used is a decree by the government to be used in paying taxes and as the official currency. This money, however, is based solely on debt and is moved in the ether. Already, we are living in a world in which money has been dematerialized and is issued under the promise of its future performance. Bitcoin is likened unto gold in that all of the capital and energy has been invested into it for it to be created.   The concept of cryptocurrency is often a difficult one for people to understand, and Andrew breaks it down in the simplest way possible. Gold is great at storing value over time, while fiat currency is a great medium of exchange over space. Separately, they each have their own fatal flaws. The technological improvement of the fiat standard is the ability to combine the two currencies based on trust. Anyone can look at the situation and determine it is horribly dangerous. There is no interface between the digital and physical worlds. What needed to be done was to design money that exists digitally and also has digital scarcity, which nobody can control. A predefined system with rules but not rulers, which specified its monetary policy in the very beginning, makes it impossible to develop more of the currency and lets everyone monitor, would be a digital system that respects the store value of money. Rather than relying on an auditor, digital signatures verify the transference of said money and it takes real-world energy to effixate the transaction called locks in Bitcoin. Each block builds upon the last one, which provides a consensus on what has been done digitally with something intangible. If you’re still confused by this concept, check out Bitcoin and the Bible’s third episode of season 1.   The biggest hindrance for people to understand Bitcoin is not understanding computers. Most people don’t understand how the internet works, yet they are still able to use it in the most intimate ways. We are very early in the Bitcoin adoption cycle, but the guys predict that soon the entire world will be on a Bitcoin standard. It is crucial that the church begins now to free ourselves of the government’s fraud. By creating an exit strategy out of the system right now, we need to take the funds God has given you and put them into a safe system such as Bitcoin. As part one draws to a close, hear how blockchains play a part in keeping Bitcoin secure. Bitcoin was designed with the knowledge that everyone would do anything they could to try to stop it, yet it has emerged unscathed.   Don’t miss part two of this conversation, in which we’ll advise listeners on how to start up their own Bitcoins and determine why it is the best cryptocurrency.   Timestamps: 3:00 – Andrew introduces today’s guests and episode topic. 6:12 – David, Simon, and Will of Bitcoin and the Bible introduce themselves. 12:29 – The evolution of currency beginning in Genesis. 17:52 – How can the value of currency be determined? 21:44 – The pitfall of gold as currency. 24:30 – What should be the Christian’s view of money? 27:06 – The dematerialization of money and the emergence of Bitcoin. 34:00 – Breaking down Bitcoin. 42:00 – The importance of embracing Bitcoin. 46:11 – How does the blockchain ensure safety? 51:29 – The indestructibility of Bitcoin.   Links: For more content or to request a speaker for your church, visit Striving for Eternity’s website. The Holy Spirit, Spiritual Gifts, What We Believe, Part 12
Rapp Report episode 209 Andrew and Jim Osman continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Holy Spirit and the giving of spiritual gifts. The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: The Holy Spirit administers spiritual gifts to the church. The Holy Spirit glorifies neither Himself nor His gifts by ostentatious displays, but He does glorify Christ by implementing His work of redeeming the lost and building up believers in the holiest faith (John 16:13-14; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; 2 Corinthians 3:18). God the Holy Spirit is sovereign in the bestowing of all His gifts for the perfecting of the saints today. Speaking in tongues and the working of sign miracles in the beginning days of the church were for the purpose of pointing to and authenticating the apostles as revealers of divine truth and were never intended to be characteristic of the lives of believers (1 Corinthians 12:4-11; 13:8-10; 2 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 4:7-12; Hebrews 2:1-4). The Holy Spirit, What We Believe, Part 11
Rapp Report episode 207 Andrew and Jim Osman continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Holy Spirit. The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: The work of the Holy Spirit in this age began at Pentecost when He came from the Father as promised by Christ (John 14:16-17; 15:26) to initiate and complete the building of the Body of Christ, which is His church (1 Corinthians 12:13). The broad scope of His divine activity includes convicting the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; glorifying the Lord Jesus Christ; and transforming believers into the image of Christ (John 16:7-9; Acts 1:5; 2:4; Romans 8:29; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Ephesians 2:22). The Holy Spirit is the supernatural and sovereign Agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). The Holy Spirit also indwells, sanctifies, instructs, empowers believers for service, and seals them unto the day of redemption (Romans 8:9; 2 Corinthians 3:6; Ephesians 1:13). The Holy Spirit is the divine Teacher, who guided the apostles and prophets into all truth as they committed to writing God’s revelation, the Bible. Every believer possesses the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit from the moment of salvation, and it is the duty of all those born of the Spirit to be filled with (controlled by) the Spirit (John 16:13; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 5:18; 2 Peter 1:19-21; 1 John 2:20, 27). Jesus Christ’s Return, What We Believe, Part 9
Rapp Report episode 204 Andrew and Jim Osman continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Son, Jesus Christ. This is a branch of theology known as Christology. The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: Jesus Christ will return to receive the church, which is called His Body, unto Himself at the rapture, and returning with His church in glory, will establish His millennial kingdom on earth (Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 20). Jesus Christ is the One through whom God will judge all mankind (John 5:22-23): a) Believers (1 Corinthians 3:10-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10) b) Living inhabitants of the earth at His glorious return (Matthew 25:31-46) c) Unbelieving dead at the Great White Throne (Revelation 20:11-15) As the Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5), the Head of His Body the church (Ephesians 1:22; 5:23; Colossians 1:18), and the coming universal King, who will reign on the throne of David (Isaiah 9:6; Luke 1:31-33), He is the final Judge of all who fail to place their trust in Him as Lord and Savior (Matthew 25:14-46; Acts 17:30-31). Jesus Christ Provides Justification, What We Believe, Part 8
Rapp Report episode 203 Andrew and Jim Osman continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Son, Jesus Christ. This is a branch of theology known as Christology. The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: On the basis of the efficacy of the death of Jesus Christ, the believing sinner is freed from the punishment, the penalty, the power, and one day the very presence of sin, and he is declared righteous, given eternal life, and adopted into the family of God (Romans 3:25; 5:8-9; 2 Corinthians 5:14-15; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18). Our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead and that He is now ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He now mediates as our Advocate and High Priest (Matthew 28:6; Luke 24:38-39; Acts 2:30-31; Romans 4:25; 8:34; Hebrews 7:25; 9:24; 1 John 2:1). In the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave, God confirmed the deity of His Son and gave proof that God has accepted the atoning work of Christ on the cross. Jesus’ bodily resurrection is also the guarantee of a future resurrection life for all believers (John 5:26-29; 14:19; Romans 1:4; 4:25; 6:5-10; 1 Corinthians 15:20, 23). Virtual Evangelism with Peter Hammond
Rapp Report episode 202 Andrew and Jim Osman interview Peter Hammond to talk about how he used virtual environments for evangelism to the lost. He started out using video games. He admits that video games can be an addiction. After he was freed from that addiction he found his way to use online games to spread the gospel. As more and more of our relationships are online and virtual and Peter found ways to use that to share the gospel. Gaming has changed. It is no longer the single-player against a computer. Now it is played online with people virtually working together talking through the game but another audience is the many people that watch people play online and hear the conversations. Video games provide great opportunities for evangelism but that was not enough for Peter. Peter and his team have now written their own game as a means of sharing the gospel. They even have in the game a Way of the Master training. They had a Muslim girl that lives in a country where the gospel is not allowed to hear the gospel. He uses the game as an apologetic tool to answer the questions that many people ask. The goal of the game is to find the Bible in a world where the teachings of the Bible have been removed from the culture. Jesus Christ the Virgin-born Incarnation, What We Believe, Part 7
Rapp Report episode 201 Andrew and Jim Osman continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Son, Jesus Christ. This is a branch of theology known as Christology. The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: Jesus Christ is virgin-born (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23,25; Luke 1:26-35); He is God incarnate (John 1:1,14); and the purpose of the incarnation was to reveal God, redeem men, and rule over God’s kingdom (Psalm 2:7-9; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:29; Philippians 2:9-11; Hebrews 7:25-26; 1 Peter 1:18,19). In the incarnation, the second person of the Trinity laid aside His right to the full prerogatives of coexistence with God, assumed the place of a Son, and took on an existence appropriate to a servant while never divesting Himself of His divine attributes (Philippians 2:5-8). Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through the shedding of His blood and sacrificial death on the cross. His death was voluntary, vicarious, substitutionary, propitiatory, and redemptive (John 10:15; Romans 3:24-25; 5:8; 1 Peter 2:24).   Resources mentioned: The Resurrection and Premillennialism Premillennialism vs Postmillennialism This podcast is a ministry of Striving for Eternity and all our resources Listen to other podcasts on the Christian Podcast Community Support Striving for Eternity Leave us a review Give us your feedback, email us info@StrivingForEternity.org Get the book What Do They Believe Get the book What Do We Believe Sponsors: Logos Bible Software MyPillow or call (800) 873-0176 and use promo SFE

Jesus Christ the God-Man, What We Believe, Part 6
Rapp Report episode 200 Andrew and Jim Osman continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Son, Jesus Christ. This is a branch of theology known as Christology. Andrew together with Jim Osman discuss the false views and beliefs people often have about the Trinity. Other doctrines believe that the Trinity is three separate Gods-- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. In this episode, Andrew and Jim collectively explain from the context of Modalism that God is not three distinct deities but changes forms of activity under which God manifests Himself. Thus, there is really just one God. They also talk about Calvinism-- the doctrine of salvation and the incommunicable attributes that only God possesses: omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. These are one of the well-known topics that become debatable and are often used against Jesus Christ not being God and in turn, leads people to believe that Jesus Christ is created thus, he cannot possess the said attributes. Moreover, other doctrine teaches the part of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ that when Jesus became man, they believe he surrendered the prerogative of being a deity. Further down the episode, they talk about a question: Is Jesus still a man today? The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, possesses all the divine excellencies, and in these, He is coequal, consubstantial, and coeternal with the Father (John 10:30; 14:9). God the Father created according to His own will, through His Son, Jesus Christ, by whom all things continue in existence and in operation (John 1:3; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:2). In the incarnation (God becoming man), Christ surrendered only the prerogatives of deity but nothing of the divine essence, either in degree or kind. In His incarnation, the eternally existing second Person of the Trinity accepted all the essential characteristics of humanity and so became the God-Man (Philippians 2:5-8; Colossians 2:9). Jesus Christ represents humanity and deity in indivisible oneness (Micah 5:2; John 5:23; 14:9-10; Colossians 2:9). Can You Trust the Bible with Bodie Hodge
Rapp Report episode 199 Bodie Hodge of Answers in Genesis joins Andrew and Jim to discuss the question can you trust the Bible? Bodie is a speaker, writer, and researcher for Answers in Genesis, Bodie Hodge has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Many people misunderstand the purpose of Andrews in Genesis. Many think it is a ministry to provide evidence to unbelievers but Bodgie explains that the ministry is to the believer to encourage them. The purpose of the ministry is to uphold the Bible from the first verse. People claim that we cannot trust the Bible because it has been edited over hundreds of years. Bodie provides an easy-to-understand answer. When talking about the reliability of the Bible Bodie compares how other religions like Islam and Jehovah's Witnesses. Bodie explains how the number of manuscripts proves that the Bible can be trusted. They discuss how the different languages prove the Bible as accurate. What are the Dangers Critical Race Theory Poses to the Church?
Rapp Report episode 195 Part 2: What are the Dangers Critical Race Theory Poses to the Church? What is critical race theory (CRT)? It is the ideology that is behind most of the diversity and inclusivity training in school and the workplace, and these trainings are actually counterproductive because they are leading to more bias and fear. It is a lens through which to see the world (a worldview) – it shapes how you view politics, theology, and education. Critical theory sees everything as the oppressed versus the oppressor. It is deconstructing those constructs until they get down to fitting into this worldview of the oppressed versus the oppressor. Why does this matter? What’s the big deal if our kids are being taught it in schools? Isn’t inclusiveness and diversity training a good thing? What are the dangers it’s posing on the church? Are we falling for a false narrative? The language in our culture is changing, and we need to be aware of what the truth is behind it all. The church is falling for the social justice gospel. When you add anything to the gospel, you’re changing the gospel! This episode talks about critical race theory and how it is affecting the church. Wives and Submission (1 Peter 3:1)
Rapp Report episode 194 Andrew provides a detailed explanation of the passages used to explain the submission of wives. Many people have not searched the context to understand the meaning. Must wives obey their husbands in every aspect? Must wives submit to their husbands at all? Does Ephesians 5:22 and 1 Peter 3:1 teach that wives must submit to their own husbands or is there a great context that is often missed? It is important to look at the context. It is in the context of each passage that we see the truth of Scripture and it may not lead to where you think it will. Sometimes the common understanding of a passage of Scripture is not the clear meaning because some do not examine the context and see the greater context. The reality is that the two main passages used to teach wives submission to their own husbands have a greater context that is often ignored. The Scriptures teach that we are each to have submission to one another. Just as a wife is to submit to her own husband, so each husband is to submit to their wife. This lesson will help to understand the divisive issues taught in the church and explain the context to help balance the views held by many churches. God the Father, What We Believe, Part 5
Rapp Report episode 193 Andrew and Bud continue the What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website series discussing God the Father. This is a branch of theology known as Theology Proper. The What We Believe statement from the Striving for Eternity website discussed is: "God the Father, the first Person of the Trinity, orders and disposes all things according to His own purpose and grace (Psalm 145:8-9; 1 Corinthians 8:6). He is the Creator of all things (Genesis 1:1-31; Ephesians 3:9). As the only absolute and omnipotent Ruler in the universe, He is sovereign in creation, providence, and redemption (Psalm 103:19; Romans 11:36). His Fatherhood involves both His designations within the Trinity and His relationship with mankind. As Creator He is Father to all men (Ephesians 4:6), but He is spiritual Father only to believers (Romans 8:14; 2 Corinthians 6:18). He has an all-inclusive plan that He designed for His own glory in all things that come to pass (Ephesians 1:11). He continually upholds, directs, and governs all creatures and events (1 Chronicles 29:11). In His sovereignty He is neither author nor approver of sin (Habakkuk 1:13; John 8:38-47), nor does He abridge the accountability of moral, intelligent creatures (1 Peter 1:17). He has graciously chosen from eternity past those whom He would have as His own (Ephesians 1:4 6); He saves from sin all who come to Him through Jesus Christ; He adopts as His own all those who come to Him; and He becomes, upon adoption, Father to His own (John 1:12; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:5; Hebrews 12:5-9)."
