Random Fandom #10 - Podcast Favorite Janet Varney!
After a long break, we are back with our 10th show, a bit of a (very!) belated anniversary, and we're beyond excited to speak with none other than Podcast Favorite, actress Janet Varney. She's the voice of Avatar Korra of "Legend of Korra", she was on shows such as "You're the Worst" and "Stand Against Evil", she's was a regular on "The Thrilling Adventure Hour" podcast, her show "Fortune Rookie" is hilarious, and her podcast "The JV Club" has recently passed the 300th episode mark! We talk about recording your podcast in your pajamas; fandom as a form of escapism and what does the word "fangirl" means to Janet; what if Killing Eve had a male lead (no thanks!), and what was it about Halt and Catch Fire?; Shiri asks many questions about The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast and the LA improv scene; Chen wants to know about the audition process for "Korra"; We talk about the responsibility that comes with celebrity and certain types of roles; And finally, we just had to rope Janet into an epic Mash Game, to give her a taste of her own medicine :) Don't miss Janet's delightful and surprising picks in our fandom-related categories. Random Fandom #09 - The OTW, fans for fans with Claudia Rebaza
On this ep We speak to Ms. Claudia Rebaza from OTW - The Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the interests of fans by preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture. * Claudia explains what is “A Transformative Work”, what goes under that legal term and what does it mean for us, fans; We speak about the shift from a culture of privacy to a culture of Self-promotion in the last decade, as can be seen on earlier platforms such as Live Journal. (www.transformativeworks.org/fanworks-fair-use-and-fair-dealing). * LEGAL ADVOCACY - A big part of the OTW’s work is in regards to protecting and defending fanworks from commercial exploitation and legal challenges. We briefly talk about the FOSTA-SESTA law that was recently passed by President Trump, and Claudia explains why it was such a worry for fans at the time (www.transformativeworks.org/fosta-sesta-and-fan); Later on in the episode: (soon to be deceased) Kindle Worlds and Amazon’s legal language and what it means for the fanfiction writers using Kindle Worlds; and Marvel’s “Create Your Own” platform. (www.transformativeworks.org/what-fans-should-know-about-amazons-kindle-worlds-program) * TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS AND CULTURES JOURNAL - a peer-reviewed academic journal that promotes fan studies projects. An amazing resource for anyone writing their thesis on their favorite fandom. * FANLORE - The fandom-wiki devoted to preserving the history of fanworks and fandoms; Plus a shoutout to BetterBuffyFics - a popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer recommendation group that shiri started in the early 2000’s. (http://betterbuffyfics.fictionandart.com). * ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN - This giant fanfiction hosting site is the most well-known and popular out of all of the OTW’s activities. It’s free and all-inclusive, and very close to being perfect (if it wasn’t for that one pesky problem… 😊 ). We talk about features you might not be aware of even if you’re a long time user of the archive, such as Bookmarks, Collections, Orphaning the work, Next of Kin and more. * The future of OTW - what is in store for this constantly growing volunteer-based organization. Will it ever be out of the “beta” stage? And how about an app? You can find out more about the OTW and its projects on its website (transformativeworks.org), and learn about how your financial support is vital to the continuation and expansion of the OTW's work on its FAQ page. Random Fandom #08 - Fan art for a Living (with Animator Leigh Lahav)
We welcome animator and fangirl (and fellow Israeli) Leigh Lahav to the show, to speak to us about the success of her fan-based creations, and how their popularity paved the way for her to work and succeed in the industry. She tells us how she got started, how her art school experience was the opposite of what she needed, and how she got her groove back when she started making videos for her own fun. We also chat about many fandom-ish things, including: * Doctor Who: How excited we are for a Doctor generating into a different gender. Leigh shares different theories around the question: Did the former Doctor know or even chose to regenerate into the form of a woman?; How much do we love Billie Piper?; (a lot.) * Stars Wars: The Last Jedi: Rey, the flawless hero that still has flaws; shipping Rey and Kylo Ren, that oh-so-problematic ship; * Fanfiction as exploration, and why it's the place where it's okay to explore different taboos, including things you'll never accept in mainstream media; Fan-art and fanfiction for your own creation as the ultimate form of complement and the height of success; * And much more! Random Fandom #7 - ClexaCon (Interview)
In this episode we spoke to Holly Winebarger and Danielle Jablonski, two of the directors of the upcoming (April 5th!) Clexacon a convention for LGBTQ women & allies, celebrating LGBTQ women and characters in media. It is an event that grew from the outcry in the "The 100" fandom over the death of a beloved queer character. We spoke about representation or lack there of, what’s it like to get a production of this magnitude up and running when you’re spread out all over the world, the impact such an event has on young people, and of course about the passion that fans generate and how it can be harnessed into doing great things. Check out the con here: www.clexacon.com Fandom Roundup: * "Puffs" - an off-Broadway musical in the Harry Potter universe. * Canceled after two seasons, the beloved show "Sense 8" is now getting closure in the form of a movie, and the cast and creators are sharing a lot of cool content from shooting around the world. * "Will and Grace" has been back for a new season after 10 years off the air, and Shiri is loving it! Random Fandom #6 - Activism in Fandom
This episode is all about the activist side of fandom, as we talk about fans who have banded together to harness the passion for their beloved fandoms in order to promote and support good causes. 1. Fandom Roundup *We're still talking about sexual harassment and rape culture in Hollywood, finally some consequences for the abusers, and the changes in the industry regarding trans people in trans roles. Also, how come nobody cares about the Joss Whedon Thing. *Runaways, the New Marvel series is out. *Chen is reading Rowell's "Carry On", one of Shiri's fandoms, and we say we'll talk about that briefly but then we don't, and we go into the whole Fangirl/Carry On thing, discussing fanfiction in the mainstream. * In the show “Jane the Virgin”, the actual book that the character Jane have been writing during the series is out in stores now; another exciting example of a canonical fiction breaking through into the real world. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/17/books/review/book-from-jane-the-virgin.html 2. Main Story *Chen tells us about the outrage around a shocking character’s death on "the 100" a couple of years ago, and how it moved fans to action, birthing, among other things, ClexaCon - a pop culture con for LGBT women. *"Cancer Gets Lost" - one woman raises money for cancer research by auctioning fandom items. She'd started from the Lost fandom and now have branched out into other fandoms. *Eliza Taylor from "The 100" asks fans to help build a school in Thailand is an example for actors using their position to do some good in the world. *Joss Whedon always knew how to direct the passion of his crazy fandom towards supporting a specific cause, "Equality Now". Shiri goes into details about the "Firefly" fandom, one of the most active communities in that regard. *During the Writers of America strike of 2007, writers were picketing for their rights, and fans of different fandoms were coming together to support the people who make the shows they love so much. The Whedon fandom, and even the Xena fans (a show that at that point had been off the air for years) were taking care of the writers while they were on strike. *Sometimes the fandom's enthusiasm and willingness to act goes too far, in ways that are unpredictable. In 2011 the Firefly fandom took a off-hand comment by lead actor Nathan Fillion and run with it, in a way that was not supported by the creators. *In 2009, "Supernatural"’s Micha Collins asked fans via Twitter to lend a hand with social causes, an act that lead to the creation of “Random Acts”, a non-profit that is still active today. From the same fandom came “Wayward Daughters”, that started as a venture to support female characters in Supernatural, and had branched off into other areas of female empowerment and other causes. *“The Harry Potter Alliance” is another fan organization working towards causes that empower women, born of course from the Harry Potter fandom. * Finally, we speak briefly about Net Neutrality, and how it threatens to change the internet and our ability to engage in our fan activities online. http://papurrcat.tumblr.com/post/167854532912/shaolinbynature-your-fandoms-are-at-risk-with Find us: Itunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/s... Random Fandom #5 - Cons cons cons!
So Chen went to NY Comic Con and Shiri visited the Israeli equivalent; Tel Aviv Icon Festival, which means we have a lot of ground to cover in this Super-sized ep! In addition to our discussion topics, we included short interviews with fans at cons, and if you take a pick at our YouTube channel you can see photos of their amazing cosplay outfits, and more. 1. Fandom Roundup - ✦ Harvey Weinstein is accused of sexual assault, and Shiri talks about volunteering at the Tel Aviv Rape Crisis Center and being a part of the Harassment Prevention Team at the TLV Icon Festival. ✦ The new Star Wars trailer brings up some questions, but mostly pulling at your heartstrings because... Carrie Fisher. ✦ A new twist in the "My Immortal-Gate"! https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/10/9/16428248/my-immortal-still-a-mystery-rose-christo-fake ✦ Pushing Daisies celebrates its 10 years anniversary, and creator Bryan Fuller would go back in a heartbeat. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/10/pushing-daisies-10th-anniversary-bryan-fuller-lee-pace-anna-friel 2. Main story - Comic Con Panels Chen gives us a glimpse into some of the fascinating panels she was fortunate enough to attend to at NYCC. ✦ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are back! And Chen re-discovers her childhood fandom. ✦ And guess which sports superstar is also a huge Sherlock Holmes fanboy? https://www.inverse.com/article/36555-kareem-abdul-jabbar-sherlock-holmes-nba-mycroft-holmes-comic ✦ Representation of Mental Illness in Pop Culture Panel: Chen shares notes from the panel on this very important issue that is finally being talked about in recent years. Some examples mentioned are Jessica Jones; Elektra; Big Bang Theory; 13 Reasons Why, and a web-comic featuring a bi-polar superhero. Auracomics.tumblr.com Shiri takes the opportunity to talk about one of her biggest fandoms of the last few years, award-winning British drama My Mad Fat Diary, an excellent example of how to portray mental illness well, not to mention one of the best representations of a "Plus" character on television, ever. ✦ Badass Women of SYFY Panel: ✦ Legend of Korra Panel: One of Chen's biggest fandoms is this popular show in the Avatar the Last Airbender franchise. She happily stood in line to get a signature and take a photo with the voice of Korra, and big Random Fandom Podcast fave, Janet Varney! Shiri loves that talented actress quite a lot herself, as she is part of Shiri's biggest fandom to date - the Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast. So we both geek out pretty hard over her... ✦ Our problematic Faves Panel: Looking back to those fandoms we used to love, not always being aware at the time of all the problematic areas, culturally, ethically, etc. We talked about the Nick Spencer’s Captain America, as an example of a plot-line that just fell flat, despite the creators' hype; Shiri voiced her disagreement with the theory of one of the panelists' regarding hidden racism in 'ships; and Shiri goes off about representation of fat people in media... again. Random Fandom #4 - Hamilton in Sunnydale (with Lauren Eggert-Crowe)
1. Fandom Roundup - Exciting development in the Hellboy reboot, following actor Ed Skrein leaving for all the right reasons; http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/daniel-dae-kim-talks-replace-ed-skrein-hellboy-reboot-1037038 The beloved children's characters of The Moomin books and animated series are about to become an animated film as well, and we are thrilled to re-live our childhood; https://www.moomin.com/en/blog/star-cast-new-moomin-animation-series-moominvalley/ The Strangers in Paradise graphic novel is also about to become a film, directed by Angela Robinson, who formerly directed Wonder Woman's origin story - Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/angela-robinson-adapting-graphic-novel-strangers-paradise-creator-terry-moore-1038733 The forth book in the Millenium saga, not written by the original writer who passed away, will also be made into a film, and Chen is torn between loyalty to the source material, and her love of the franchise and actress Claire Foy, newly cast in the lead role; https://twitter.com/JarettSays/status/908741742895161344 Clark Gregg, Marvel Univers' Angent Coulson, will be directing an episode in the upcoming season; http://www.cbr.com/clark-gregg-directing-agents-of-shield-episode/ And the Organization for Transformative Works is celebrating ten years of bringing us, among other things, our favorite fanfiction home, Archive of Our Own. http://www.transformativeworks.org/today-is-the-otws-10th-anniversary/ 2. Main story - We talked about the thrill of the fandom mashup - putting two of your favorite things together to enhance one another. Shiri shares a bit about her fan-made movie "Angel in the Office", a mashup of... you guessed it. To expand on that, we had the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Lauren Eggert-Crowe, creator of SunnydaleHam, the Buffy/Hamilton crossover twitter and Tumblr accounts. We talked about missing fanzines; the problematic terms "fans" and "fangirls"; women on the West Wing; tumblr vs. twitter, and of course Buffy and Hamilton in all their similarities and differences; and we tried to come up with our own SunnydaleHam tweet on the spot. We couldn't help asking Lauren about her feelings towards the "Joss Whedon Thing..." and heard her thoughts on Whedon as a feminist, separating the love for a show with the love for the creators; Buffy and the lack of diversity, and much more. Random Fandom #1 - The Joss Whedon thing
On our very first show we introduce ourselves, and discuss at length the very upsetting news about our (former) hero, Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and more, and a bit of a god in fan culture. Chen talks about Wynonna Earp, the series that had just been renewed for a third season; and gives a disappointing update on the Xena: Warrior Princess reboot to which we were so looking forward. Shiri gives a shout-out to Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ - a hilarious semi-scripted parody of reality TV, that's been recently canceled and is looking for a home.
