Singaporean PR Raised $55 Million With The Most Innovative Way Of Making Revenue
Thanks for listening to one of our most popular episodes, click the Play button! In this episode, hear how an Iranian-born Swede, now a Singaporean PR, achieved the near-impossible by raising $55 million dollars for his startup that aims to make buildings more energy-efficient, using technology to save clients money on their energy bills and on top of that, earn his startup that he co-founded some serious buck along the way. Sound like a boring episode about science and climate change? Give this one a chance, today’s guest is a captivating and driven public speaker. UPDATE: A month after this episode aired, Poyan had the privilege of being included in The Peak Power List 2018.  “The idea was that clients could achieve 20 to 30 per cent energy savings with zero upfront cost. BBP would get paid a portion of its clients’ savings only if its solution worked… Investors have caught on. BBP recently raised $45 million for regional expansion. It is currently in eight territories, including India, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Malaysia. So far this year, it has secured $18 million worth of contracts.” – Germaine Cheong, The Peak Magazine. At some point, you have to ask yourself, why be an entrepreneur? Well, you can’t deny the prospect of making a lot of money. You read about that all the time, but what’s even more impressive are entrepreneurs who start with a mission to help our world, and then build a successful company based around that. On top of that, if they can secure $18 million in contracts, then his business has been able to achieve the near-impossible trifecta of earning serious buck, creating a competitive technology that can be exported internationally and help the environment. I hate the over-usage of the phrase ‘win-win’ in the startup lexicon, especially when used in relation to the environment but…has he really achieved the sacred ‘win-win’ scenario?  Hear how a Stanford MBA grad built his career at Unilever and Mckinsey, then ditched the corporate path to become an entrepreneur on a crusade to help the environment with a very unique business model. A business model where he would pay all the costs to install his technology and only be paid based on the money his clients would save on their energy bill. No upfront payment and he would carry all the risk. Introducing Poyan Rajamand, the Co-Founder of Barghest Building Performance (BBP), he’s not only raised a series B but earned his company awards and partnerships with the Singapore Government. Check out his website at www.bbp.sg. The stakes were clearly against him. Firstly, it’s hard to find money from investors or clients in sustainability, even though there’s a lot of positive recognition of the field, there’s inertia from clients who are pushing back on changing their ways. Secondly, his business model had to prove to clients his tech could reduce their bills before he got paid, meaning he had no room for error and he was carrying all the risk that his tech would pay off. That takes some backbone. And thirdly, he would have had a much more stable career path as a management consultant. You have to respect anyone who turns down attractive career prospects to roll the dice with entrepreneurship while saving the environment along the way. He and his co-founders have raised 55 million dollars, that’s impressive for a startup focused on energy efficiency. Thanks for listening! The greatest compliment you can give me is to recommend this podcast to colleagues, family and friends. Share a comment through email or Linkedin and let me know what you think, I’m constantly trying to improve the content in this podcast for you.  I’m also looking for my next tv show after I recently hosted my last tv show on Channel NewsAsia about the latest business trends in Asia. In this show, I flew to Japan to uncover the e-sports industry to dive deep into the Esports industry. I learned a lot about myself and about how to host a show. You can check it out here, it’s an hour-long and we met with a lot of interesting characters along the way. I’d love to know what you think. Watch the latest TV show in Japan with Channel NewsAsia before COVID-19 hit. More about Barghest Building Performance (BBP): Many companies in the Energy Efficiency space offer advice on how to improve energy efficiency or sell a new piece of equipment that helps customers save energy. Barghest Building Performance do neither. They offer a solution that helps buildings operate their existing equipment better and thereby achieve long term measurable and sustainable energy saving. Their solution is always paid through the savings they achieve over the long term, which aligns their incentive with that of their clients. If their clients don’t achieve any energy savings, they don’t get paid. Barghest Building Performance focuses on Air Conditioning Systems since its the most energy-intensive system in a building, but can offer a range of other energy efficiency-related services. Damien Cummings is one of Asia Pacific’s most recognised digital transformation leaders, having led digital or marketing departments at companies like Ogilvy, Samsung and Standard Chartered Bank. He’s now the CEO of Peoplewave, his startup that aims to help HR departments through their innovative software. He raised a seed round of $1.2 million, which is an impressive amount for a seed round, but behind his success, he’s had to fight huge personal battles. You’ll hear how an ambitious young man from Australia used his social and self-taught computer skills to climb to the top of Asia’s marketing industry, and how he’s dealt with huge hardship. Find out how he’s able to keep his mind on his goal of building a $1 billion-dollar company. In this show, I flew to Japan to uncover the e-sports industry with a crew and fixer, and we dove deep into the Esports industry. I learned a lot about myself and about how to host a show. You can check it out here, it’s an hour-long and we met with a lot of interesting characters along the way. I’d love to know what you think. Damien’s Bio: Damien Cummings is highly awarded, being honoured with a Doctor of Philosophy in Management (honoris causa) from KEISIE University, Korea in October 2017. He’s also been awarded “Global Top 50 Digital Marketing Leaders 2016”, “Financial Services Marketer of the Year 2016”, “Digital Marketer of the Year 2016”, “Most Influential CMO 2015”, “Marketing Professional of The Year 2012” and the “Brand Leadership Award 2011”. Damien is currently CEO of Peoplewave, Asia’s leading HR software company, which is powered by blockchain. He is also the Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Blogger and Principal Consultant at Econsultancy. Before entrepreneurship, he was Global Head of Digital Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank and Chief Marketing Officer at Philips APAC. Damien has also worked at major global brands such as Samsung, Dell, Ogilvy & Mather, Citibank, Coca-Cola, NRMA and McKinsey & Company. He has been a judge for many awards and a top-ranked keynote speaker, chairman or commentator on marketing transformation and digital. Damien has held industry leadership positions including APAC Board Director of the Mobile Marketing Association, APAC Advisory Board of the CMO Council and the Global Executive Committee of the World Federation of Advertisers. Damien’s blog, Digital Future, is available at: http://www.digitalfuture.asia and his Twitter account is: @DamienCummings Host’s Bio: At 20, I took a break from my law degree to co-found my first startup, Beeconomic, which was fully acquired by Groupon (a record-breaking buyout in Singapore after just 6 months according to The Straits Times). As Groupon Singapore co-founder, we created over 200 jobs and made history by helping Groupon become “the fastest-growing company ever” (-Forbes and CNBC). After Groupon, I worked on 4 startups that failed, which taught me important lessons about failure. After finishing my law degree, I joined a “Top 5” law firm in Australia that led to an offer in their M&A advisory practice. I was then recruited by Hong Kong’s biggest English newspaper, The South China Morning Post, as the social media editor to execute a digital transformation strategy. When the team achieved strong digital growth, Jack Ma’s Alibaba acquired the newspaper. After 6 months of transitioning and training with the new owners, I moved on to pursue my passion for cooking. After culinary school, I became a full-time advisor for a $100M Japanese VC, a highlight is our $1M investment into a fast-growing, millennial-focused news platform. I have served as a consultant to Governments and 80+ tech firms in Southeast Asia, but for early-stage startups, I also volunteer as a mentor at an incubator. I am an entrepreneur who knows exactly how it feels to be guide-less and isolated. I’ve met a lot of kind people on my travels who were willing to help me and this is my way of paying it forward. Spending my spare time volunteering in charities, mediation, cooking, and working out are my passions. Channel NewsAsia shot a 2018 TV documentary called “Millionaire Minds: Chris Chong” featuring my latest (failed ) startup and featured me as a guest host on their show “The Millennial Investor” before COVID-19 hit. I’m looking for my next job (like everyone right now), if you know of any TV hosting opportunities, then do please reach out. S2E5 Who We Are: COVID-19 and George Floyd Update
Thanks for listening, click the Play button! Hey, welcome back to season 2 of ramen to riches. It took me a long time to really think through what is going on right now in the world. If you’ve been following the news, it’s clear the world is in a state of flux, as are many people and its Governments. From the pandemic to the protests, there’s so much happening but in Malaysia, there’s not much I can do, but I hope to offer a small bit of relief for those in the startup community. Having said that, I didn’t pre-write this speech, I just pressed record because I felt so many of my ideas had been pent up, so, sorry if it sounds a bit rough around the edges. I highly recommend watching ’13th’ on Netflix now which shows how the US Government has been infiltrated by corporate interest to drive up the rates of incarceration among minorities, especially Latino and Black people. Also, check out my latest documentary with Channel NewsAsia by googling Japan Millenial Investor and you’ll find the episode. If you liked this episode, check out our most popular interview from season 1 with the co-founder of SGAG and MGAG, Karl Mak. S2E4: INSEAD Grad’s Startup Changes Food Ordering
Thanks for listening to one of our most popular episodes from Season 1, click the Play button! Ten years ago, ordering food was pretty much a hassle…it was like how you remember it when you were a kid, if you wanted delivery, you’d have to call hours ahead, and only some restaurants would deliver. And I say ten years ago because timing is everything. Ten years ago, you wouldn’t get into a stranger’s car, or you wouldn’t sleep in a stranger’s house instead of a hotel. Tim was at INSEAD when he saw food delivery apps like Foodpanda transform how food was delivered. He then thought, could an app change our experience when we order and pay for food in a restaurant? Watch the latest TV show in Japan with Channel NewsAsia before COVID-19 hit. That was Tim from Waitrr, check out his website at waitrr.com, he now covers around 200 restaurants in Singapore. It seems kind of obvious after that conversation that we should have the freedom to easily order food without having to wait or deal with staff. Call me a stickler but I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much when I don’t have to deal with wait staff, especially in Asia, where I’ve had menus thrown at me, been shouted at, or just been given death stares while I eat my food. You got to admire a guy for passing on a really lucrative finance job to follow his passion, after all, he came from a family of restaurateurs so he must have been thinking about how he can have a positive impact on the industry. Also, bonus advice on how he handled building his app with an outsourced Vietnamese team and what it’s like being a new dad and how it’s changed the way he approaches entrepreneurship. More about Waitrr: Waitrr is an ordering and payment application that creates a seamless and enjoyable dining experience for busy food lovers. Be it dine-in or take away, the application comes in handy. Precious time is usually spent waiting in line, making your order, waiting for the bill, you name it. With Waitrr, the orders are sent straight to the kitchen in seconds. It’s as easy as 1-2-3. Once you download Waitrr, you immediately see the restaurants in your area. Those located nearest to will appear on the top of the list for your convenience. Waitrr with over 190 restaurants, with food from almost every cuisine. After selecting a restaurant of your choice, you will be led to a complete menu with pictures for you to browse. Once confirmed, you simply select ‘Add order’ and ‘Pickup Time’.  Alternatively, those who want to dine in can start browsing the menu and once they get seated, their orders can be placed. It just takes one QR code scan for the order to be sent straight to the kitchen. Waitrr was founded by Tim Wekezer who studied an MBA programme at INSEAD Singapore. Having grown up in a family of restaurant owners, and holding a bachelor’s degree from the distinguished Hotelschool – The Hague, Tim has a deep understanding of restaurant operations and the guest experience. Holding an MBA in Finance, Tim’s resume could have easily landed him an opportunity in the field of finance. Instead, he took the bold decision to crack at something he was passionate about. The idea came to Tim when he encountered a bad lunch experience here in Singapore, where he had to wait almost an hour just to get a waiter to send his order into the kitchen. Tim examined the solutions currently in place and found only tablet e-menus which were limited in function and very expensive. The timing was perfect to actualize this idea when he took the idea to an Insead Venture Competition and won first prize. All of the prize money went into kickstarting the development of the Waitrr app. Validating the business model, Waitrr has received its early stage fundings from a crowdfunding community of Singaporean investors. To name a few, some of them include Andy Lim who is the Founder and chairman of private equity firm Tembusu Partners and Steve Kek, CEO of OMG Venture. Another source of funding was from Jisr Venture Partners, run by Albanawi and son Omar. They saw Waitrr’s strategic intent to improve automation and progress in the F&B sectors. Similarly, Toronto-based food ordering app Ritual raising  US$70M recently tells us that there is demand for our service, both on the consumer and investment side. Looking at the prospects for growth overseas, Ritual’s geographical growth tells us that Waitrr has a similar potential to disrupt the industry in Asia – as a leading player in the Singapore market. Host’s Bio: At 20, I took a break from my law degree to co-found my first startup, Beeconomic, which was fully acquired by Groupon (a record-breaking buyout in Singapore after just 6 months according to The Straits Times). S2E3: How Coronavirus Has Changed Asian Culture
Thanks for listening, click the Play button! Watch the latest TV show in Japan with Channel NewsAsia before COVID-19 hit. Hey, welcome back to season 2 of ramen to riches, I hope that you’re doing alright, with what’s happening now with COVID19, these are hard times, not only to record the podcast, but in every way. This feels like an episode of Black Mirror. Societies, economies, and families are on the verge of crumbling. Actually all of 2020 has been pretty bad so far. This is the closest I’ve ever been in a wartime lockdown, which doesn’t say much, but where I live, they’re taking it very seriously- people have been arrested for jogging, supermarkets only let in one person at a time, and only one person per a family. It’s harder to get into a supermarket then “Ce La Vie“. And the hard thing is, it’s not an enemy any of us can visibly see, it’s not a person or a race that we can hate, yet it’s taking down hundreds of lives every hour and I think the last I read it was 95,000 have passed and just yesterday it was 80,000, so 15,000 people died in 1 day of something people didn’t even know existed 6 months ago. Or maybe some of us did know about it sooner but didn’t tell. I think most of us were already freaking out when the number hit six thousand, and now it’s 15 times that in just a few weeks. Will everyone blame Asians for Coronavirus? This podcast episode addresses the insidious racist monster in the room. Now what I’ve been telling my startup friends, is two very important points regarding COVID. Firstly, predict that your future revenues, for a few more quarters ahead, will be slashed, you have to factor that into your future forecasts and plan accordingly. Go through the 5 stages of grief, you can google it, and then cross out that original number and replace it with a fraction of what it was before. If your business is booming during this, then damn you you’re not meant to be profiteering from a crisis but good job. My second and final point, if you have any cash, hold onto it as a reserve that you can dip into during times of need like this one. All accessible capital is now considered your emergency fund, use it to take care of your staff, or future costs, this thing might crush your business for at least another 6 months, you’re going to have to be a uni student again and live on a budget. If you’re like me in a tightly restricted country, like Malaysia, you’re not even allowed to walk outside to walk your dog or go jogging. The only reason why you should go out is for essential reasons like groceries or medical needs, otherwise, police will ask you to stop, turn back and stay inside. They’re even threatening fines or being arrested. Luckily I have my girlfriend and we exercise, cook, and keep each other company. And there’s Netflix, there’s not a lot of new videos coming on youtube, but so far, we’re fine. The tight lockdown imposed on my city has just been extended by another 2 weeks, so, in total 3 weeks left. Well I can’t deny that my girlfriend and I have fights, but that’s kind of expected if we’re cooped up for a week, but we seem to handle it well and I’m hopeful we’ll get better at dealing with each other’s differences. Counting the amount of time we spend together, I mean, it feels like a time machine that speeds up how fast the relationship grows. It’s a big experiment where everyone has to live in their place, some people are alone, and they’re probably anxious not being able to see anyone, some people live with parents and that would be fun to watch, families are combustible, and I’m living with my partner, figuring her out every day, enjoying her lying next to me, her presence is calming. The biggest thing for us right now is not to fight over the little things, but they seem so important and worth fighting for in the heat of the moment. It’s hard staying in, staying calm, getting your mind into some kind of distraction like a new hobby or activity, it could be a daily fitness video, that you follow along to on youtube, or learn a new language or how to cook. I tried reading again, it’s slow but I’m getting into it, I’m reading a book recommended to me on my work trip to Japan, the book is called “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” (really incredible!). Or, if you’re feeling too energetic to read, then lie down until you feel a burst of energy, then get up and give your house a good spring clean. Throw out old things you don’t need anymore, or put it in a box to donate to a charity. Your place is gonna seem bigger and more spacious. Finally, be patient with those that you live with, hold back on sparking an argument, if you’re cranky, go to bed and sleep it off. Everyone needs to stick together, to overlook the little things and live as a pack. Now’s the time, more than any other, when you need each other, they need you to be calm, co-operative, and helpful. You should ask for the same. We feel the world has changed, and it has. We know this is temporary, but it doesn’t feel that way, and we realize things will be different. The loss of normalcy; the fear of economic toll; the loss of connection. This is hitting us and we’re grieving. Collectively. I believe we will continue to find meaning now and when this is over. But take just a short moment to think about others, neighbors that you might only pass once in a while who are taking care of elderly relatives, staff in essential services who can’t take off work, frontline health workers who are exasperated, and as we speak are working around the clock to shoulder most of the immediate recovery work, dealing with emotional exhaustion we probably can’t even comprehend because so few of us ever had to deal in life and death situations. Thanks for listening! The greatest compliment you can give me is to recommend this podcast to colleagues, family and friends. How A Startup Raised USD$2.9M After 4 Years of Struggling. Part 2
This is part 2 of a 2 part series. Listen to Part 1 first. Welcome back to season 2 of Ramen To Riches. We’re in part 2 of our conversation with Aston Chia. He’s the co-founder of Overdrive, an IoT, or internet of things startup that automates data sensing of different things from tracking vehicles to machinery, goods and even tracking people, kids, and the elderly.  Basically these senses collect data about people’s movements, actions, in an effort to make things more efficient, secure, reduce wastage, among other benefits, pitching to business owners or governments. Just to recap from part 1 of this series on Overdrive. There are two guys starting their own really small operation, they initially built a product tracking sensors in vehicles, but that wasn’t popular, so, one day they asked their clients what they needed, and because of that, they changed their product to something that customers actually needed and bought, until finally, when they had the right talent working with them, had enough happy clients and investors, the next step was the epic journey to raise money from seasoned investors. It would take them four years, countless meetings, and the fear of failure always lurking around. Because if they didn’t lure investors’ interest, they wouldn’t have the money needed to continue to grow overseas.  Find out how two outsiders, Aston Chia, and his cofounder Zen Chin, raised US 2.9Million, which is equivalent to around 4 million Singapore dollars. 30,000 sensors as we speak sending data to Aston’s company, that’s a lot of sensors. Just imagine, for example, your tv remote as one sensor, now times that by 30,000 throughout the country, imagine the load of data that is collected, where once it’s received they’ll read and analyze the data and advise companies on increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Thanks for joining us on another episode, because as an entrepreneur, we all have to make sacrifices, like cutting costs by only eating ramen or using the free wifi at Starbucks, but with the right mind, you can go from ramen to riches. Join us next time and thanks for listening. Aston’s Bio Founded in 2015 by technologists Aston Chia and Zen Chin, Overdrive’s customer portfolio include Sentosa, Nanyang Technological University, Fedex, Ascendas, the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore, and Volkswagen and Mazda in Malaysia via its local IoT partner. Overdrive operates an IOT platform that automates data sensing of various types of assets within a business ecosystem, from vehicles and machinery, to goods and people. It leverages on a “mash-up” of different connectivity technologies and curated 3rd party devices, that is configured to optimally deliver business objectives such as real-time tracking and monitoring, exception alerting and command centre visualization. Aston is a technologist and solution architect at the heart, having learnt his craft at Monash University Australia with a Bachelor of Computing in 2005. He then led a developer team for Wired-Up Mobile Solutions, architecting and developing a mobile back up solution for VAS for major mobile operators in Asia. He went on to help Bayer Southeast Asia plan, design and coordinate the execution of their largest data center migration into 2 new data centers. Prior to starting Overdrive, Aston led the design and development of EaziCall, a callback mobile solution for Singtel. He is 36 yrs old and married with 2 baby boys. Thanks for listening! S2E2: Why This Startup Tracks 30,000 Sensors Across Singapore. Part 1
Hey, there’s this guy I’ve known for a long time, I met him the first time I moved from Australia to Singapore when I was 19. He was my landlord, literally the first person I met after I left Changi Airport. I was looking for accommodation and found an ad online and I contacted Aston, I think it was on Facebook, and we agreed on a price to rent his room. I had almost no savings and his room was in my price range, but not exactly in the middle of town. He was a really cool guy, a great host, a person who didn’t mind helping you out. I saw the best traits of Singaporean values in him. Aston is a seemingly unassuming guy, a highly talented coder who can code and manage people. How many coders do you know who can manage people? He was starting a company in IoT, the internet of things, but it was a small operation, just him and his co-founder creating software that tracks sensors inside company vehicles.  I left Singapore, it was great but I was only 19, had a law degree I couldn’t put off anymore, so I came back to Australia. But a year passes, my brother calls me up and asks me if I want to start a business with him, and where does he want to start this business? Singapore, we did it and sold it to Groupon.  That’s when we go back to Aston’s story, he’d give me sporadic updates, new developments he was making with different iterations and business ideas. I read that his startup, Overdrive, had just raised US2.9M in a space that isn’t just important because it’s Government level, it changes our touchpoints with our cities. You can’t make any mistakes in this industry and with this Government. On this episode, you’ll hear why he built a startup that tracks sensors all around Singapore. How many sensors does he track? 30,000. What does he track? Stuff, where thousands of kids, vehicles, machinery, you name it, are located in real-time, he can track anything. Is that creepy? Maybe a little, we talk about it, and how a humble, technically oriented guy developed himself into a salesman and because of that, has been able to charm investors, raising a very nice US 2.9 million dollars. The biggest message you’ll get in this episode- If he can do it, then so can you. S2E1: Monologue, on persistence and courage
Hey! Check out my latest TV show, The Millennial Investor on Channel NewsAsia, where I go to Japan to uncover the explosive esports industry. At the end of season 1, which took 6 months to record and ended with 22 episodes, I just had nothing left to say after that, and that’s why I took a break before making season 2. It’s like when you’re at work, and you have a really good meeting, that feeling after, you’ve said everything you needed to say and also taken in a lot. I really hope that you got something meaningful out of this episode and only if you did learn something new, as a thank you, please take a screenshot of this podcast and share it as an Instagram story and tag us. The greatest compliment you can give me is to recommend this podcast to colleagues, family, and friends. Share a comment and let me know what you think, I’m constantly trying to improve this podcast for you.  I’m also looking for my next tv show. I recently hosted my last tv show on Channel NewsAsia about the latest business trends in Asia, I flew to Japan to uncover the e-sports industry there which was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about myself and about how to host a show. You can look it up on google by typing in Millenial Investor Japan, it’s an hour-long episode and we met with a lot of interesting characters along the way. How to Take Your Startup From Ramen to Riches – Interview by Alex Leung
Due To A Surge In Traffic, For An Easier Experience, Listen On Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Podbean. A huge thanks to Alex Leung for interviewing me on his podcast, here is his LinkedIn profile and his website, Fullstack Marketing Ninja. From his website: Chris Chong was just 21 years old when he sold his first startup to Groupon, achieving the entrepreneur’s goal of a million dollar exit. As a Groupon Singapore co-founder, he created over 200 jobs and made history by helping Groupon become one of the fastest growing company ever. He managed Groupon Singapore’s growth to become Singapore’s biggest e-commerce website from 2010 – 2014. His next startup failed, which humbled him and taught him important lessons along the way. Chris has had a storied career, with highlights including working at a Top 5 law firm in Australia, the SCMP – Hong Kong’s oldest newspaper – managing millions of users across multiple websites and social networks and working as a full-time Advisor for REAPRA, a $100M Japanese venture-builder and VC based in Singapore. After being covered on the front page of The Straits Times (2010), Channel NewsAsia filmed a TV documentary called “Millionaire Minds: Chris Chong” (2018). His goal now is to pay-it-forward by sharing knowledge through a semi-autobiographical podcast called “Ramen To Riches.” What’s covered in this episode: What Chris’ journey was like from starting as a young 21 year-old entrepreneur in Singapore to building Groupon SG, a company of over 200 people. Some reasons why if you’re an entrepreneur in Southeast Asia, Singapore is the place you have to be. How to know if you should continue moving forward with a startup idea or when you should kill it. How Singapore is becoming as good of a startup ecosystem as Silicon Valley. Podcast Transcription: (This transcription has been redacted for readability.) Alexander Leung: Hi everyone. Thanks for tuning into the Fullstack Marketing Ninja Podcast. We’re here today with Chris Chong, a person who wears many hats and is currently the founder and host of another Singapore-based podcast called Ramen to Riches. Chris is also a serial entrepreneur, having started several startups across Southeast Asia. In the public eye, he’s probably best known as the co-founder of Groupon in Singapore. Glad you could be with us today Chris. Can you give us a bit more info on your background? Chris Chong: Absolutely. Hey everyone listening. I grew up in Sydney, Australia. My parents are originally from Singapore and Malaysia. I am Australian born Chinese and basically, after high school, I got into a law degree at my local university in Sydney and I just really wanted to get good with girls. I was kind of nerdy back then and I really wanted to try something new to get on an adventure and I really didn’t want to become a lawyer. At the time, I was reading a lot of law books and they were thick. I just started this adventure in Singapore where I basically copied a really popular idea at the time which was the Groupon model, this idea of like a daily deal. My brother also quit his job in New York. He was working as an investment banker and we basically tried our luck at coming back to our mother country Singapore with very little money; just just the clothes on our back and the savings in our car. We moved into a tiny hostel in a part of Singapore. If anyone’s ever been there, it’s called Little India – it’s like where all the Indian construction workers live. We shared a queen sized bed and basically just using a laptop built out a cheap copy of a Groupon for six months. And basically the day after we launched, there was a new competitor every week and we had to fight tooth and nail to try to keep our slice of the pie, undercutting each other on commissions and being on the verge of basically becoming bankrupt. We were surviving on two dollar meals and we couldn’t really even drink like Starbucks coffee. Groupon came into Singapore and they asked the top top five players to fly to Hong Kong and it was very much like a “Shark Tank” kind of interview grilling us about where we saw the future of the company where we saw the future of the business model and eventually they chose us. We were at that time not even first out of the five. We were probably the second or third option, but I think that was just something about my brother that they liked maybe myself as well and they said here’s a ton of money go kill your competitors and become the daily deal kings of Singapore. We also spread to the Philippines and I ran Groupon with my brother like it was a family business for four years. It’s super awkward when you are starting from literally waking up next to your brother in the same bed at the age of 21 to building a company of over 200 people with him. A: Wow. I didn’t even know that was the genesis of how you got started with Groupon. You gave a really good understanding of how and why you got into the whole startup scene. One thing I think that was really interesting is that Groupon is considered one of the earliest success stories in Southeast Asia during the startup e-commerce era. What was that like? You kind of already gave us a harrowing account of how that experience was. What was it like doing a startup in Southeast Asia back then? Give us a little bit more detail on that. It’s an incredible story. C: Hey thanks man. Yeah, you’re right. You know, if we compare the startup scenes in Singapore and San Francisco, I think that Singaporeans would really like to see themselves as being up to speed now, in terms of deep tech or A.I. or whatever the next step is. I think Dyson has just announced that they’re launching their electric car program IN Singapore – so they’re moving all their operations away from Europe or America. When we first came to Singapore literally I was like a second year university student. This was in 2010. The only real success stories from the Internet was there were like review websites? It was it was really far behind. E-commerce had taken off at maybe like an individual level. So there were some blog stores some like some trendy young ladies who had a knack for buying things in the markets in Thailand and bringing it to Singapore and then making a premium on that. But there was nothing cohesive. There was no real e-commerce ecosystem at that time. We chose Singapore because we had one cousin living here. So all my family had kind of scattered around the world to Canada, America and Australia. We chose Singapore because it’s English speaking. I can’t speak a word of Mandarin. I’m like a terrible Asian in that sense. A: I feel your pain. C: A fellow banana! There was some e-commerce infrastructure here that already existed so we didn’t have to do cash delivery or like, mobile coupon payments. The Singaporean Government is very stable which we take for granted but it’s not the case in other countries where you have to work with families who are entrenched with the government and the merchants here are really forward thinking – it’s not a traditional Chinese environment where we would have have to first of all, speak Mandarin and develop relationships like you have to in China and spend a lot of time with them. So it had all the right ingredients and we came in at the right time in the right place and it was a hustle, you know? By the time Groupon came to Singapore there were 35 different players all trying to fight for the same merchants. So if any merchant showed up on my page, then they’d get five calls from our competitors trying to basically undercut us and try to win them over. It was really tough at that time as it was just about to explode. The scene was just ripe in Singapore. A: It sounds like the infrastructure was a bit more developed than other Southeast Asian countries at the time, but right now I think we’re starting to see that inflection point with technology where you can leapfrog a lot of a national growing pains. Definitely, the amount of funding is growing consistently across the region, especially in Singapore for startups. What’s cool to hear is that even in 2010, you felt that Singapore was the right place to be at the right time. On the show, we try to stick with things that are actionable and your background is really a mosaic of experiences. Obviously you’re a hustler, you learned a lot about business just by taking a bunch of bumps and bruises along the way. You studied and practiced law, you’ve worked in journalism and PR. You’ve also founded several different apps and the big Groupon win. How has all of this benefited your work in startups in Asia? What sticks out to you as elements of your skills and experience that have really helped your journey? C: So my basis before becoming an entrepreneur was I had been studying law and I had been studying journalism in university and I had at that time just started talking to girls. So when you combine all the amateurish elements about me. It was just about trying to get out there trying to talk to people and network. But I mean that’s all I really came with in terms of my skill set. I mean, they say having a law degree is like having a degree in bullshit and maybe combining that as well with journalism – being able to sell yourself to journalists and always trying to present a rosy picture of whatever you’re doing, whatever company you’re building. It was really tough learning sales on the job because I had never pitched anything, so to go into a pitch situation to try go into many different industries from restaurants to like paintball places and try to pitch the Groupon model was tough. It was tough to learn how to deal with all those different objections and rejections and rejections are tough. You walk away from a place feeling kind of deflated. Part of your core identity feels a little bit hurt that the person said no but you just have to understand that it’s part of the pitch process and if you ever want to get anywhere in life you have to get slammed down a couple of times and I think that’s what I’ve really learned through much of my entrepreneurial journey through all my startups. You know, I was kind of lucky. You asked when did I know that I had a chance that maybe Groupon would acquire us so that the startup had any chance of any longevity beyond one of our competitors being bought out. We couldn’t really see it that way. For me, my personal journey was more about self discovery, overcoming fear and really looking outward for opportunities and not taking it too hard on myself if something didn’t go my way or if I didn’t close a deal. My brother is eight years older than me. He definitely was a bit more put together mind. He was an investment banker so he knew exactly what he wanted out of it, maybe financially or career-wise, but as a young buck, 21 year-old cowboy, I was just thinking, “you know, maybe I can mix the skills that I’ve been able to acquire and mixing that with different shop owners and then seeing if I can just become a better person to the world.” How that relates to journalism and PR was that, Groupon was bought out because of our story. The odds were really stacked against us; there were more established people competing against us. It was literally two brothers who no one had ever heard of. We’d been to Singapore on family holidays two or three times, it was like coming in, snatching the pie in the middle of the night while no one was looking and taking it home, while the whole house was being guarded by all the “big boys” who were starting to look and say, “this daily deal model in Singapore is huge.” All the incubators, the VCs, even the companies that run public transport here, all the big advertising companies here were starting to set up their own kind of Groupon clone website. So for us – two nobodies – to have the opportunity to be the poster boys of this new e-commerce website explosion in Singapore really changed the complete landscape here. And I think it gave a lot of young people who didn’t have any experience, any corporate experience or weren’t one of the big wigs, weren’t one of the old, big families here that represent 98% of the wealth on this island a chance to dream that they could also do the same thing. We were on the front page of the national newspaper, there was a documentary made about us and I guess the message that we wanted to convey is that at the core of entrepreneurship is that, hey, if you really have enough gusto and believe in yourself and if you’re not afraid of a bit of failure and rejection, then you can aim sky high and there’s a chance that you might get that prize that we got and that was really what I wanted to tell everyone. You know, you don’t have to go through all those five-year courses or work at a co-working space that looks like a McDonald’s. You can you can share a queen-sized bed with your older brother and eat two dollar meals and drink fifty cent coffees and hustle your way to success. A: Being ambitious and hustling is celebrated in startup culture, but being pragmatic and understanding when to realistically quit or pivot is another. You’ve started several startups in the past – how do you know when to continue moving forward with an idea or when to pivot or kill it? C: You know, I was just like, “Wild Wild West cowboy” style of thinking, “hey this is a cool idea, could I adapt it for the Singapore market? Or, the original entrepreneur methodology is just looking for a problem and trying to find a solution. It was definitely and just like, “was I making money from it? Where was I getting customer interest in it? Was I getting customer retention?” [This] is probably the most important indicator because you don’t want to be a one-hit wonder with customers. I think the most important thing I learned at the VC was that there is a strict methodology – before you even put one single cent of your life’s savings into a startup idea and that’s doing a lot of research on your customers. A lot of face-to-face interviews; I’m not talking about, creating a Google survey and just sending it out to as many people as you can. That’s one touchpoint, but literally going into the street and trying to talk to your target customer and asking open-ended questions, not asking presumptive questions but really asking, “like hey, how is the state of this current process?” and just holding back and letting them answer. So active listening is really important. Before you even put a single cent into creating a minimal viable product if you can do as much preliminary research into a customer then you can hope to basically hedge your risk and avoid having that startup that bankrupts you. So if you’ve already launched and you know you’re not getting a great vibe from your customers, you’re not getting customer retention, then it’s probably time to kill it or pivot and move on but you definitely know when you have a hit when there’s a product-market fit, which is basically customers that are buying from you and then keep on coming back and is so wowed by their experience that they’re actually telling their friends about it. A: Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs that are moving to or thinking about moving to Singapore? C: Yeah, I mean that’s a great question. You know the gap between say, San Francisco and Singapore’s tech ecosystem used to probably be very wide. You know, like the type of mindset, the culture, the language barrier, but in the last ten years, I think Singapore has really caught up to speed in terms of having the same infrastructure, the same ecosystem, the same opportunities and the same resources as San Francisco. I mean right now, what’s very hot here is deep tech, AI, very much the same as San Francisco. We’re over marketplaces, we’re over chat bots… it’s just exploded in Singapore. If there’s one thing that I could emphasize to a foreigner who’s thinking about coming to Singapore for the startup scene is that it’s very similar. It’s very cosmopolitan. You’ll find the same sort of access to resources, you can find funding, you can find learning materials and you can find great coders. So, basically, Singapore is a hotbed in Southeast Asia where the best of the best try to make it. So that gap has minimized in the last 10 years. We’re still copying some great ideas out of San Francisco, but we’re doing it efficiently and we need as much talent here as possible. I encourage anyone to come to Singapore. A: As someone who’s seen startups at work both in Singapore and San Francisco, I completely agree that Singapore has come a long way in less than a decade. Thanks so much for joining us today Chris. To end our chat, I wanted to know, what’s on the horizon for you this year? C: So as you mentioned earlier, I’m working on my own podcast and the mission of my podcast is to really dive deep into the hardships that entrepreneurs have had to overcome to make the success that they’ve had. I’m trying to interview some of the big household brand names in Singapore, the brands that impact Singaporeans on a daily basis, but not make it super promotional and paint it like this overnight success story that the mainstream media seems to be obsessed with but really dive into the stories where it was a battle. Like, looking in the mirror and wondering, “am I going to give up?” The first guy I interviewed, his younger brother committed suicide on the weekend and he had to show up to work on Monday and still be a leader. I interviewed another gentleman who was on the brink of bankruptcy and he went through an emergency fundraising round and his co-founder ditched him. Fundraising is a job in itself; he had to run the operations while fundraising and he had to carry both those weights on his shoulder. And I think it’s that kind of picture, that persistence that is the key to success in entrepreneurship. From what I’ve seen, the startups that succeed are the ones that just didn’t die out of pure persistence by the founders. I want that message to be conveyed to anybody who’s entering the startup ecosystem. Whether as a fresh grad or they’re thinking of making the move from a corporate job, because I don’t want them to come in super bright-eyed and bushy-tailed thinking, “oh you can instantly just become an overnight success.” Usually it’ll take like three or four startups or it’ll take a lot of failures and a lot of rejection before you gain any validation in this space. So that’s what I’m working on and my goal for 2019 is to turn my podcast into a TV show, so I hope I do that. A: Thanks for your time today Chris. C: Thanks so much for having me man.
