Choosing Music for Worship: It is hot right now!
Choosing Music for Worship As I begin a new, long term sub ministry in a contemporary service, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on my habits and thought processes when it comes to choosing music in worship. Each week I will look at a different aspect of choosing music and the important questions we should ask as we work to develop the worship life of our church. I will spend time with issues that apply to both traditional and contemporary services, as well as all worship styles in general. Good music selection practices apply to us all. It is hot right now! The driving force behind the rapid change in music being used in churches today is the worship music industry churning out more and more new music. Music Directors often feel compelled to offer their churches the “latest and greatest” music. With the rate that new music comes out today, this can lead to a disposable approach to the musical language of our churches that literally mirror’s Top 40 radio. Is that the best way to choose music for worship? In this podcast, I will give you a few questions to ask of those new songs before you slide them into your worship music rotation.

How Firm a Foundation
As we work to launch into new directions, it is important to stop and assess the strength of our base. In today’s podcast, we talk about four key areas that must be carefully tended to so that we can stay strong in our ministry.

As we focus hard on finding new ways to do things, let’s not forget all of the wonderful things that we have done in the past. Sometimes it is from digging through memories that we find inspiration for the future. This week we explore the value of memories and three practical ways to begin remembering the past for its valuable contributions.

New Year, New Ministry: Teach the Why
Nothing is more powerful than a clear and committed WHY. Well, nothing that is then when that commitment to a why is clearly communicated to others so that they can find the why for themselves. Sound complicated? It is actually pretty simple but at the same time pretty difficult. Join me this week as I share the importance of rediscovering your ‘whys’ (or maybe defining them for the very first time) and then building support for your ministry by teaching the whys to others.

New Year, New Ministry: Commit to the How
I was told once by a very smart teacher, “there is nothing that cannot be done, there are only things you have not figured out how to do.” That lesson changed my ministry forever and I believe that it can change yours too. This week we will discuss the “how’s” in our ministry and what it takes to get the results we have always wanted.

New Year, New Ministry: Finding A New When
Churches seem to be locked in on Sunday morning only for worship. It has not always been that way. Many times in church history worship services and other ministries have been offered at different times in order to reach people who may not be able (or are even unwilling) to attend a Sunday morning service. As we look for revisions to our ministries, maybe it is time to find out when people can come to worship and make allowances for them instead of always asking them to come to us. Join us this week as we explore the possibilities.

New Year, New Ministry: Find the Where
As we look at small revisions we can make to our ministries that will produce large results by the end of 2020, this week we find new places where we can do the ministries we already have. From moving rehearsals outdoors, taking performances on the road, to even teaching kids in school about instruments, we can reach so many more people by simply doing the same things we already do, just in new places. All we need to do is look and make the commitment.

New Year, New Ministry: Revision not Resolution
There is so much pressure on resolutions that they almost always fail. Revisions, on the other hand, are manageable changes that can have a huge impact. As we start this new series we begin by discussing the important difference between these two change agents and how we can prepare to make revisions in our ministries in the coming year.

Being the Baby
When we look at the Baby Jesus and think about our ministries, I am struck by two possible approaches: “Are we keeping our ministries as a “baby” and not letting them grow up?” and “Are we no longer able to look at our ministries through the fresh, awestruck eyes of a baby?” Each of these is an important point of view that we will explore together this week.

Worship Servant: Serving the Congregation
Too often worship leaders can forget that they are to serve the congregation, not the other way around. This week we look at what it means to truly serve the congregations we have been called to lead in worship.
