EP034: The Gift of Transformational Travel with Jake Haupert, co-founder, Explorer X and The Transformational Travel Council
Do these two things go together? Travel + transformation. Of course they do! I mean isn't that what we all want and quite honestly, isn't that what we should expect when we travel to far off lands? Ahhhhhh, but we don't *always* seek adventure now, do we? Sometimes a trip abroad is just about checking boxes and seeing monuments (too many to count and far too quickly to really appreciate). Am I right? With where we are today as a society, as a country, this is what every human being needs. More transformative ways of healing, connecting, and growing! Being more conscious about travel, and digging deeper into the experience, before, during and after the adventure is over; THIS is the "hero's journey" that lives within Jake Haupert. It is the personal quest that he is working tirelessly to create, for everyone.  Jake Haupert is the co-founder of The Transformational Travel Council, creating change by empowering, guiding and supporting travelers in their pursuit of personal growth and global understanding. He is also the co-founder of Explorer X, a company where he and the other X'er co-founder, Michael Bennett, consciously-design custom travel experiences that take the traveler to the most incredible destinations around the world, uncovering how cultures, experiences, and adventures have the ability to impact the traveler from the inside-out.  Jake has a deep appreciation for the power of travel and its ability to incite change by breaking down the walls within and between us. Highlights from the show: The definition of "transformational travel" and why it's so important in today's society  Through Explorer X and the adventures that they create for individuals, small groups, and families; raising consciousness, being more present, opportunities to learn and grow (and heal), all through travel  Capturing and staying within a person's travel flow (what's it all mean) A nod to the great Joseph Campbell and the "hero's journey"... the inspiration that comes from JC's work If REAL travel is what you seek, ask yourself, "why am I going?" and "how can I have a deeper experience?" Jake's story around purpose; the younger years and the travel bug he picked up later in life after inspiration and role-modeling from the women in his life (mother and grandmother) Mentors! We love it when mentors come up in purpose-achievement discussions. Without mentors, would inventions and amazing companies like Explorer X and TTC exist? Tune in to hear about Jake's mentors.  Advice to the younger generation around purpose ... Jake captures it beautifully! EP033: The Key to Life with "the Lake" Creator, Robin Layton
Robin Layton is one of the lucky ones. She knew at a very young age what her purpose was. A celebrated Nikon Ambassador since 2013, Robin has an eye for award-winning visual storytelling.  By age 24, she was honored by LIFE magazine as one of the eight most talented photographers in America. In 1991, her image of a young departing soldier, embracing his daughter on the USS John F. Kennedy, was used globally for ads including AT&T and the USO and was on the cover of LIFE Magazine’s The Year in Pictures issue. Her photo story on runaway teens in downtown Seattle was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Sports enthusiasts will remember her iconic photograph of Ken Griffey Jr. from the 1995 American League playoffs (“The Smile at the Bottom of the Pile”). Robin is clearly on a path of purpose! She's about to launch her latest project, a labor of love titled, "the lake," a stunning culmination of a 10-year personal mission, presented on a grand scale with state-of-the-art craft and attention to every detail.   How do you know if you'll be financially ok in your life? Do you have a financial game plan? Do you know your numbers? If you're like me... reviewing my financial statements and coming up with a sound investment strategy is as exciting as going to the dentist and finding out I need a root canal.   MONEY and FINANCES scare the crap out of me!  Until I met my financial guru, Tama Smith. Tama is the Head of Women Living a Richer Life at Brighton Jones, in Seattle, WA. Her story is poignantly beautiful. She started out a highly driven undergrad at Berkeley, launched her own company serving as its CEO, and as the business model started to reveal significant cracks, Tama received that dreaded phone call ... Just as Tama was heading into a deep valley of professional despair because of her company's broken business model, Tama's beloved sister who lived in LA with her teen-age son, and was the primary caretaker of their aging parents, was diagnosed with malignant cancer. Tama rushed to her sister's aid and within a matter of weeks, her sister passed. In that instant, Tama's life was forever changed.  Tama's story unfolds in this episode of Purpose Lounge and with it the teachings that only an MBA Wharton grad and the former CEO of the Tyra Banks Company, can so eloquently and passionately deliver.  Highlights from the show: Avoid the "bag lady or bag person" fear by emotionally addressing your insecurities around money and financial planning Life throws a lot of curve-balls; are you emotionally and financially prepared? EP031: Wave Edibles and Wave CBD co-founder Michelle Boessler
Fascinating people get me every time! Michelle Boessler is super fascinating! When you meet this fabulous unicorn, you would never expect her to tell you she's a co-founder of a highly successful cannabis company. But then again, what should we expect?  Michelle's company, Wave Edibles is dedicated to helping people! With proper, micro-dosing in every nibble, to the highest quality chocolate. Think Godiva ... only this chocolate delight is "on drugs." What I most appreciate about Michelle and her story of purpose-achievement is that she didn't go it alone. She aligned her values and principles with a few other like-minded unicorns to create an amazing company with a purposeful mission to help people manage their pain and emotions through a revolutionary edible line that is fun, safe and clean.  NEWS ALERT! By the time we published this episode, Michelle and her team launched an entirely NEW product line called Wave CBD available at www.wavecbd.net. Grown and made in the USA, each product promotes relaxation, immune system support, relief for sleeping disorders, and soothes joint and muscle aches while helping with anxious feelings or distress.  Beyond the business and these amazing products (because we're not here to serve up commercial advertisements), Michelle shares important messages that every entrepreneur and founder should hear when the decision is made to leave the comfort of a corporate job and launch a business.  Highlights from the show: The growing up years in Middlebury, ID; how this small-town vibe (driving alongside the Amish), family, experiences, and travel abroad helped define a life of purpose. Channeling the great Maya Angelou. "I love wisdom. And you can never be great at anything unless you love it. Not be in love with it, but love the thing, admire the thing. And it seems that if you love the thing, and you don't just want to possess it, it will find you." Staying true to your values and knowing what your passion is. Taking her strong desire to help people and unleashing that passion in an effort to launch a business that she can feel good about. Relationships and the connection to people who can help you achieve your goals. Advice to the younger generations around living a life of purpose? Come on, you know we always ask this question on Purpose Lounge!  Don't be afraid of the word "no"... it doesn't define you! Always be learning! EP026: Transcending extreme change to create a new world order with Hanson Hosein
The equation is simple.  Take one part supportive parents encouraging education and creativity, combined with several parts education and passion, remove discipline and structured vision, and replace with a healthy dose of purpose and meaning, and you come away with a man who has every bit mastered the art and science of what it takes to be a full-fledged modern storyteller and communication leader.  Hanson Hosein is one of Seattle's most influential people. He's also the Director of the Communication Leadership master’s program at the University of Washington and the President of HRH Media Group LLC  a media production and communications strategy firm, based in Seattle, WA.  His journey began years ago when he completed several law degrees before entering into the field of journalism. Taking an unconventional approach, Hanson achieved accolades as an Emmy and Overseas Press Club award-winning journalist for NBC News. Hanson courageously ventured into war-torn territories as a solo TV war correspondent for MSNBC and CBC. He is also a documentary film director whose work has been streamed and broadcast worldwide.   The episode you're about to tune into, or perhaps you already have, details Hanson's journey and mission, to help leaders act as agents of translation and transformation.  Highlights from the show include: A lesson on how to never be boring From London to Seattle, the journey is the mission and purpose is in every step What it means to start at the top of the mountain... EP025: Resilience and Courageous Leadership with Tracey Grove
Have you ever heard the tale of the terrifying sabertooth?  Well of course you have! Not only have you heard the story, but you've also probably lived it.  Tracey Grove, a high-performance executive coach who specializes in leadership effectiveness and resilience, stepped into Purpose Lounge to share practical steps and insights to achieve resilient leadership in today's stressed out, and fear-based culture and society. In Tracey's book, "Taming the Sabertooth: Resilient Leadership in a Stressful World," we are asked to reflect on major topics and themes surrounding trauma and stress, and to measure our own levels of resilience.   The story began with a defining moment that occurred on May 21, 1998, when Tracey and her husband were carjacked near their home in South Africa.  In one single event that for others resulted in the loss of life, for reasons speculated but really unknown, Tracey and her husband were released. As a survivor, Tracey has been focusing her life's work on helping others, particularly leaders, to thrive (not just survive) in a world that is highly charged, ever-changing and let's face it, fairly traumatic.   Highlights from this episode: How to build high performing teams Understanding the importance of stress and how to deal with it Flexing your self-awareness muscle and identifying triggers that take you off your resilient path Ways to maintain balance to be healthy and feel good through gratitude  Empathy and courage...the impacts on leadership and ways to harness these attributes  Moving through fear; and my favorite chapter in her book, "Feel the fear, and do it anyway." EP024: Social entrepreneur and co-founder of Bee-Bilingual with Elizabeth Black
Meet Elizabeth Black, a social entrepreneur and former elementary school Spanish teacher who believes every student should have the opportunity to learn a language.  Elizabeth is based in Washington, DC, and focuses on content, instruction, and program marketing. With over six years of classroom teaching experience in the language education field, she holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Spanish from American University, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Christian Brothers University, and dual DC teaching licensures in elementary education and K-12 Spanish instruction. Together with her brother, they launched a purpose-driven company, Bee-Bilingual, an online education program that provides engaging, affordable language instruction to K-5 students. In an increasingly global world, it's more important than ever for students to learn multiple languages. Research has shown that the best time for students to learn languages is when they are young. The idea for Bee-Bilingual came about during the years Elizabeth worked as an elementary Spanish teacher in Washington, DC. Quite often, she found herself teaching students who were eager to learn, but weren’t able to attain even a basic level of proficiency due to the limited time and resources allotted for language instruction. In today’s world, speaking multiple languages is not only beneficial but, in some fields, a requirement for students’ future careers. Elizabeth began to wonder if there was an affordable way to make sure that every child had the opportunity to learn another language. After some research, she realized that there weren’t many options available for elementary schools to meet this need. As Elizabeth discussed this problem with her brother, Phil, they decided they wanted to do something about it. Phil came on board as co-founder and, with Elizabeth’s background in teaching and curriculum development and his knowledge of finance and business, Bee Bilingual was formed! EP018: Man on a Mission with Randall Broad
"You have cancer."  Three words no one ever wants to hear from their physician.  In this very special episode of Purpose Lounge, we hear from Randall Broad about his cancer journey, what he learned, and what he now teaches anyone who may be faced with the same life altering news.   Randy was diagnosed in 2008 with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at a local yet renowned community hospital. The fact that he was diagnosed with this disease is heart wrenching in and of itself, but it was the manner in which the diagnosis was communicated to him that is even more shocking.  Not willing to accept their treatment protocol, lack of effective communication, and overall disregard, Randy set out to find prospective providers in the area. Taking matters into his own hands and ‘shopping’ for the right provider proved fruitful. Based on a caring physician, Dr. Renato G. Martins, who took the time to educate Randy about his specific form of cancer and the recommended treatment, Randy brought his business to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA).  Now a 10-year lung cancer survivor, Randy’s greatest mission is to advocate for fellow patients. The Kirkland  father of two is actively involved in patient advocacy both locally and nationally: talking with patients one-on-one, partnering with physicians and speaking at events.  “I’ve noticed that patients, especially ones who are newly diagnosed, don’t know what questions they need answered,” he says. “I want to help break down the barrier on both sides of the stethoscope.”  Randy is also partnering with Gary H. Lyman, MD, MPH, of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, to improve the communication process between patients and physicians. During these “CSessions,” Randy interviewed Dr. Lyman on the subject; next, he plans to continue the discussions around the web with various audiences.   I hope that everyone will share this episode as it reminds us just how important it is to be our own advocate, to get the medical attention and information that we need in order to experience positive outcomes in remission and healing. Oh, and one more thing, Randy is a published author!  Check out his personal memoir, "It's an Extraordinary Life," a book he wrote for his children after being diagnosed with cancer.  Available on Amazon!

EP017: Life Lessons from a Medium with Tina Powers
I will never forget the first time I saw the movie, "Sixth Sense." Young Cole Sear (played by Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret as he ever so softly whispers into the camera, "I see dead people."    Even before that spine-tingler, I was incredibly curious about anything having to do with the paranormal.  I was also fascinated by mediumship; people who receive messages from the deceased.  I mean who doesn't love to binge watch past episodes of "Crossing Over" with John Edward.   So you can only imagine how excited I was when Tina Powers entered the lounge, Purpose Lounge!      Tina is a former news anchor and reporter who now works as a professional medium, receiving psychic messages from the deceased. As she laughingly says: “It’s reporting for the other side.”    As you tune into this episode, you'll receive powerful messages from the very much alive, Ms. Powers.  Lessons about doing what you love, trusting yourself, combating negative energy, addressing the skeptics,... oh, and conjuring up one of her most memorable readings to the tune of "Billie Jean." (Yep, that's right, we're talking about Michael Jackson!!)   In the end, Tina gives the best advice to those seeking purpose, especially to the younger generation…   More about Tina Powers: In addition to being a well-known and highly sought after medium, Tina lectures on intuition and "how to raise inspired, positive kids."  She holds private sessions with clients at the world-renowned Miraval Resort in Arizona. Her clientele is a veritable “who’s who” of people from all walks of life from business leaders to celebrities who span the globe. Her warmth, infectious laugh and incredible ability to help people connect with a higher vibration enables them to lead happier lives.   Tina is an accomplished oil painter and has recently begun showing her vibrant, colorful pieces. She believes all forms of creative expression are an essential element of our true contentment as human beings.   Tina has authored two books. The first, a children‘s book called The Land of Imagination helps children believe in themselves and their dreams. Reporting for the Other Side is a chronicle of her journey from the news media to the spiritual world.   Schedule a private reading with Tina and learn more about her work: www.tinapowers.com.    Thank you for tuning in!  Be sure to Subscribe, Rate/Review your favorite episode.  You can also check out the full library of Purpose Lounge content at www.purposelounge.com.

Mastin Kipp's exercise that you can follow to help you identify your list of things that you have been putting off because you're allowing FEAR to stand in your way A concept called "Courageous Action" which Mastin describes as that which we are afraid to do, but that ultimately helps us do the things that we KNOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING This episode is a wake-up call to anyone who may be stuck in FEAR, with practical ways of thinking about how to FIGHT through the FEAR by simply shifting your mindset. EP015: Kissing 2018 Goodbye with No Regrets
Welcome to what will likely be the last episode of Purpose Lounge to air in 2018!  It's been six joyful months since we launched, focusing on Purpose, Meaning, and Joy!  In this episode, I take a few moments to reflect on what I'm titling, "My year of transition." 2018 has been significant in terms of my own personal growth and for that, I am entirely grateful to the universe!  I have No Regrets!  Had it not been for the trials and tribulations, I don't know that Purpose Lounge would exist.   We've had some pretty incredible guests (a.k.a. purpose achievers) on the show, sharing their stories of how they achieved purpose in their lives.  It takes courage to step into your purpose! But oh, when we do... the freedom and grace that comes with it!   As I reflect on this past year, I realize just how important the message of being seen is, especially when so many of us battle depression and anxiety.  Feeling needed!  Self-love!  Overcoming!  Such important topics and themes throughout each episode.   My hope for the new year (2019) is that we continue to share messages of hope and that we all continue to seek out opportunities to live a life of purpose and meaning.  Let's put an end to comparing ourselves to others, and stomp out the "disease to please."  Let's show up as our best self, be vulnerable, and live this life!   Now go be awesome!!  See in you in 2019!
