We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. We’re going to Scotland in 2021. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 12:32 - Origins of No Pants Day 17:28 - “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day” from Kilted For Her Pleasure 20:00 - Doctor Who vs Outlander with Devo Spice Today we’re gonna chat with Devo Spice. That’s the band name of comedy hip hop artist, Tom Rockwell. Tom is out of New Jersey. I met him at I-Con, the very first convention I ever attended in Stony Brook, New York on Long Island. He was at all of the Brobdingnagian Bards shows there. He is a hilarious musician with a helluva way with words. He’s recorded on the Bards’ CD I Will Not Sing Along. He wrote the lyrics to my song “Doctor Of Gallifrey”. And one of these days, we’re gonna do a recording of “Lannigan’s Ball” as a rap song. Welcome Devo Spice. Can you please tell me your Celtic origins and how it involves comedy hip hop? And in a truly celtic fashion, don’t let facts get in the way. Let’s hear that glib red headed comedic blarney come out full force. DEVO SPICE BACK STORY When I was given the idea of a Doctor Who parody of “Donald McGillavry”, I knew one Whovian who had seen every Doctor Who episode ever made, and was still available. That was Devo Spice. Little did I know at the time that one of The Doctors companions was a Scotsman fighting at Culloden named Jamie. Tom, can you tell me who this kilt-wearing companion was and if he was the same Jamie from The Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon? And if so, how does he fit into both timelines? ABOUT THE COMPANION JAMIE OF CULLODEN FROM DOCTOR WHO Tom, you also host a comedy music podcast called Manic Mondays. And you’re the founder of The FuMP. Why comedy music? What drew you to it? What’s the funniest song you ever heard on The FuMP? Feel free to say one of mine. And when you're done with that you can tell me which other song of mine was the funniest. (re: this is an actual question. I'm curious what the real funniest song is) FUNNY MUSIC You can check out his podcast at ManicMondays.net. The Funny Music Project is at TheFump.com. And of course, if you want to hear more music by Devo Spice, my favorite album of his is the Doctor Who album, I Am the Doctor. It’s also a favorite by my daughter Kenzie. And she barely knows Doctor Who. You can find out more about his music at DevoSpice.com. Here’s his song “Companion Application” from his CD. 30:34 - Devo Spice “Companion Application” from I Am the Doctor 33:22 -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. I updated the lyrics for all of the songs I sing in this show. You will find lyrics and chords so you can play along with me. But the best way to support me is to Join the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. Patreon funds my songwriting and more. Your support pays for the production and promotion of my music and this podcast. Follow the link in the shownotes. Times are changing. Regular gigs will begin again this year as more and more people take the vaccine. There will be a degree of normality coming. But I’m betting that the pandemic is the final nail into the CD coffin. Sure, some of you will still buy them. But the 40-50% of pre-pandemic sales will drop below 25%. That’s my bet. Of course, cds were the primary source of income for musicians. So what’s next? How do you intend to support musicians into the future? - JOIN THE PUB CHAT —Joe Biden won the 2020 election to become the 46th president of the United States of America. Big congrats to him and Kamala Harris, the first black, asian and woman Vice President. But for President-Elect Biden’s inauguration, he hired The Chieftains to play music. That got me thinking. Who would you want if you won the presidential election? You can listen to the album for free in my Mage Records store on Bandcamp. Then email me marc@marcgunn.com or Chat in the Celtic Geeks group on Facebook to let me know what you think of the album. Rattyboy says on Amazon said:  "5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL Traditional Celtic Music. This CD is a beautiful compilation of Celtic music! Absolutely a wonderful album done very professionally. The autoharp combined with Marc's voice on the album and his accompaniment (voices, instruments, etc.) is divine to listen to. My suggestion is to buy the CD so you don't lose these gems. A very, VERY well done CD that I have actually listened to several times already. Simply wonderful." Copenhaver Reviewed on Amazon: "...this is a Greatest Hits collection. Marc is a dynamic performer and this is a good compilation of Irish songs like "Rocky Road to Dublin," "Old Dun Cow," and more. You should certainly try to see him live." John White reviewed on Amazon on May 28, 2013: "Another great album from the Celtfather. Many classics, reinterpreted in a way that only Marc Gunn can perform them. If you've liked his previous stuff, you'll love this one as well (I do). If you don't like this stuff...well, go drink 3-4 pints of Guinness, then come back and listen again; you'll love him for sure, then!" River Godbee said on February 12, 2013: "I think this should have been called "Marc Gunn's Greatest Hits"." Brazell on June 8, 2013: "Another great album from Marc Gunn. The Celtfather presents a wonderful collection of music that will speak to the Celt in all of us." In response to my “Will It Resonate?” I got these responses: Allan Marcotte wrote: "Marc, Yes I bought "Not Everyday is St Patrick's Day" and I love it.  It has one of my favorite songs on it "Kilkelly Ireland".  I think it has a great mix of songs on it, including some good rebel songs. I hope you and your family are well.  Keep up the good work and great music!" Renae Jackson emailed: "I was listening to one of your CDs today.  On the way to my father's memorial.  Thank you for the music you make.  I'm not Irish or even close, but I love the Celtic culture.  The emotion and feeling of Irish music is so special.  Again, thank you for the music you make, it has meant a lot to me today." Deedra Winey sent a photo and emailed: "Hi Marc! I'm ok,aside from a headache. Luckily I can sit in the quiet ,dark for a few days. I rearranged some stuff and am now a Gunn Runner! I'm excited! Rosin the Bow for Christmas #220
The comical history of Rosin the Bow. My failure as a podcaster. What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? A Doctor Whovian Spotlight on Matt Hughes. Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic Geek culture. I am your Guide. My name is Marc Gunn. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.com. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 00:27 - SONG: “Rosin the Bow” from Happy Songs of Death What does “Rosin the Bow” mean? Rosin is a solid form of resin that's obtained from pines and other conifers. ... Used by cellists, violinists, and other string musicians, rosin helps create friction between the bow hair and strings. Essentially, rosin helps the bow grip the strings and produce sound. That’s from The Vault at Music & The Arts. The song was popularized in America in the 19th century. Though it probably had British or Irish origins according to Wikipedia. The most interesting fact was that the music for the song was used by several US presidential campaigns, including for William Henry Harrison ("The Hero of Tippecanoe"),[3] Henry Clay ("Harry, the Honest and True") and Abraham Lincoln ("Lincoln and Liberty"). 3:02 - WELCOME -- Post a review in Apple Podcasts. If you enjoy this show, please subscribe or post a review on Apple Podcasts. I’d love your feedback. -- The first episodes of the 2020 Celtic Christmas Podcast are now online. As usual, the show is free to listen to. And there are over 50 episodes to enjoy with mostly music, but also a lot of holiday entertainment. Get Celtic Christmas music. -- Browncoat Christmas is now online. Mikey Mason and I released this four song EP of Christmas songs inspired by Joss Whedon’s TV show, Firefly. It’s upbeat and fun. You can download or stream it most everywhere online. -- Short Story of what’s new: My failure as a podcaster. - CD SPONSOR: SCOTTISH SONGS OF DRINKING & REBELLION Hi. I’m Marc Gunn. You may remember me from such kilted bands as the Brobdingnagian Bards, Kilted Kings, and Marc Gunn. Ye know. Me. But perhaps, you don’t know my music. But you may know some fine Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. That may be a rip off title from a Clancy Brothers album, Irish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. But the music is pure Scottish fun. You’ll get 17 Scottish songs that will make you want to drink or rise up against England. You’ll hear songs I learned from Ed Miller, The Corries, Widening Gyre (you probably have never heard of that band), and even Outlander… Well, sort of. There are five songs by Robert Burns, including “MacPherson’s Farewell”, “Scots Wha Hae”, “Ye Jacobites by Name”, “A Man’s A Man for A’ That”, and the clean love song version of “Green Grow the Rashes”. There’s the unofficial national anthem of Scotland, “Flower of Scotland”, by The Corries. The “Skye Boat Song” was a fantastic traditional Scottish song even before the lyrics were modified for the Outlander TV show. There’s the great drinking ballad, “Jock Stuart”. And let’s not forget Hugh S. Roberton’s incredible “Mingulay Boat Song” that is given a Louisiana gospel edge. You’ll find it all on Marc Gunn’s Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. Get it at CelticMusic.org. Now let’s go geek with a song that’s not from that CD... 9:09 - GEEK SONG: “The Smial or the Tree” from Sci Fi Drinking Songs "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort." - The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien What on Middle-earth is a “smial”? Well the Tolkien Gateway has the answer. “Smials were the hobbit-holes tunneled into earth mounds and hills. For generations the Hobbits dug into the earth to live. By the later Third Age the poorest Hobbits still went on living in burrows of the most primitive kind with only one window or none. For the most well-to-do hobbits, smials were luxurious versions of those primitive diggings of old. Their tunnels had rounded walls and branched to other rooms. Smials included Bag End and the smials along Bagshot Row of Hobbiton, the Great Smials of Tuckborough and Brandy Hall. The latter two were large enough to have ample room for a hundred Hobbits. When suitable sites for these large and ramifying tunnels were not everywhere to be found, many Hobbits lived in wood, brick or stone houses. This was the case with some muddy regions of the Eastfarthing, such as the Marish. "Smial" is a term used by Tolkien fans to refer to divisions of Tolkien Societies. Read more about it at http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Smials 11:25 - CELTIC GEEK SPOTLIGHT: Matt Hughes I've seen Matt Hughes' name for about as long as I can remember. He was an integral part of the Brobdingnagian Bards' community early on. Which is where I first found him. He was also one of the first people to cover a song I wrote. So you know that's gonna make me happy. Hehe He also helped me write “Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster” and performed on “Scouring the Shire” and “Bilbo’s Farewell” (he yelled ‘Proudfeet’) on my CD Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits. When I asked Matt about being a guest in the Celtic Geek Spotlight, he made some silly reference to the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. That gave me the idea to have Matt answer all of my questions… without blinking. As soon as he does that, we will be forced to move to a different time period with a new question. Welcome Matt, can you tell me what inspires you with music? Why are you still making music today? What do you have planned for the future? Oh and do it all without blinking… MATT RESPONDS Whoa. It’s 2004. Hey my voice sounds younger. What are you doing at this time in your life, Matt? THIS TIME IN LIFE Pirate Accent: Curses, Matthew! That was just getting good. Avast. Suppose it’s time for ye to tell me about your pirate lifestyle. How did you become a pirate? What songs inspired your travel back in time? PIRATE LIFE Thank you Matt Hughes, wherever you are in time. I appreciate you taking the time to chat with me. Now obviously, it sucks that we lost some of the stories you were telling thanks to that darned Weeping Angel time travel business. My wife loved the song and insisted on walking down the aisle to it. Thanks for the years past present and future." Tammy Glover replied: "I have so many songs & music types that I like (many of them are your songs!), it’s hard to narrow down. Bring Me Home, Boys and Doctor of Gallifrey are 2 that immediately spring to mind. As for creative things, cooking is a favorite, especially soups and noodles. I have also been tinkering with some jewelry making. I enjoy watching your videos & seeing your family updates. ???? Have a great day!!" Jan Czenkusch writes: "Well as always I have a cross stitch project to work on.  I am also trying to work on some Christmas music to record for church.  My version of Come to the Hills will be the prelude on Sunday." Sarah Crockett sent you a message. "A Rabbit for Halloween, She said her name was Saffron, Doctor of Gallifrey, Roll the Old Firefly along, Don’t go Drinking with Hobbits, She’s Shiny, Breathing, and I really REALLY love O’er the Way. Good stuff! I look forward to my 2 hour drive to work on Friday with your music ?????? I am currently working on not gaining any more Covid weight (not going well), trying new recipes, and tweaking my Faire garb and various Mad Men cosplay. I boring ??"

Celtic Heartstrings #219
The bothies of Scotland, the true nature of Celtic Heartstrings, genetic counseling and an interview with Mikey Mason about our new single, “Hero of Christmas.” It’s all on the Pub Songs Podcast #219. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 0:23 - SONG: “Barnyards of Delgaty” from Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion 2:16 - WELCOME --That was a bothy ballad. Bothys are small houses in Scotland. They were typically used by itinerant farmers a century ago. -- Post a review in Apple Podcasts -- New videos: Bright Side of Everything, Tough Times, Something Different Coffee Concert with Hallelujah -- New podcasts: Poor But Happy, Celtic Christmas Podcast -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics: Hero of Canton, Monahan’s Mudder’s Milk 5:15 - SPONSOR: Celtic Heartstrings Celtic Heartstring are necklace pendants made from the broken strings of my heart. I mean, autoharp. However, they are more than a recycled string from my autoharp. I like to think of them as a symbol. Celtic Heartstrings are designed to be as unique as each person who wears one. The large pendant is worn over our hearts to remind us that empathy and kindness are essential to the human experience. Generosity builds bridges. And when we look at people through their eyes, with empathy, we better understand them. Kindness becomes easier. Celtic Heartstrings also symbolize our shared love of Celtic culture through music. They are a symbol of the diversity of the people who wear them. Though they are called “Celtic”, these are not true Celtic knots. They *look* like them. Just because someone might not be of Celtic heritage does not mean they are not part of our Celtic community. Celtic Heartstrings are about inclusion. That’s something that I’ve talked about on my Celtic podcasts since I started all of them. There’s enough exclusion in this world. Kindness and generosity are about inclusion. We can be different and yet also be one people, be that Americans or just the human race. Some of my more popular designs are the Celtic Butterfly, the Celtic Dragonfly, the Infinity Heart, and the Celtic Cross. You can find them all in my store at MageRecords.com. Wear your Celtic Heartstring with heart. Come together with kindness. 7:28 - GEEK SONG: “Genetic Counseling Song” from Selcouth November 12 was Genetic Counseling Awareness Day. My wife is a genetic counselor. When she was completing her degree, she asked me to write a song for their graduation. I had a lot of trouble writing one. So we sat down together and wrote some lyrics for a song that captured different aspects of her new career. I recorded a video of “Genetic Counseling Song” last year and posted it to YouTube. I think Genetic Counselors were happy to be seen. 10:36 - CELTIC GEEK SPOTLIGHT: Hero of Christmas Interview with Mikey Mason In 2018, Mikey Mason and I did a Blue Sun Holiday Tour Spectacular. We played five dates between Alabama and Indiana. We recorded a few Firefly Christmas songs for the event. They were available on a limited-edition CD. We are planning the official release of the EP in December. In the meantime, we are very happy to officially release the first single, “Hero of Christmas”. The song is of course a parody of “Hero of Canton” and touches on the 60’s Christmas special “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” as well as Dr Seuss’ masterpiece, “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. I sat down with Mikey last year and talked to him about the song. 25:43 - SPOTLIGHT SONG: “Hero of Christmas” by Marc Gunn & Mikey Mason from Browncoat Christmas TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS. Patrick Mahoney replied: "With my crowd I don't think I could make it past noon and be conscious" Kris Dobie asks: "Does Tea count???" What do you think? Do you like the Mandalorian? Coming Together #216
A dark murder ballad for Halloween. Coming together to change the world. Why more people don’t play the autoharp. Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic Geek culture. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 8:48 - SONG: “Together” by Marc Gunn from Single for KrabbeConnect Krabbe disease is a rare genetic disorder. It is a severe neurological condition that results from the loss of the protective covering surrounding nerve cells.  Individuals affected by Krabbe disease do not make enough of a specific enzyme. Because of this, Krabbe disease slowly damages the white matter, brain and spinal cord, as well as nerves outside the Central Nervous System. 11:13 - STORY: Coming Together I’ve been thinking a lot about togetherness recently. What does it take to bring people together? What does it take to build a community? I can’t say that I really know. Nor am I any good at it. It makes me think of the presidential race. I will vote for Vice President Joe Biden because he’s a moderate. He has worked for years together with both sides of the political aisle, Democrats and Republicans. He seems to me a return to politicians who aren’t just about creating division. But I don’t know how he will bring people together, or if he can in these partisan times. As for me, I’m bad at it. I posted a new episode of the Celtfather Monthly podcast recently. My primary goal was to remind you to have a moratorium on sharing partisanship on social. Don’t share partisan memes. Don’t share news articles. Instead, just share your opinion on your social media. No sooner had I shared that podcast, when I didn’t follow my own advice. In so doing, I felt like I created division. I want to unite people. But I’m not good at it. I don’t know anyone who is. I know I get overrun by my emotions. I say dumb things in anger. Sometimes I will ignore facts just to suit my belief system. You would think that right and wrong were more straightforward. Black and white. But what’s that line by Obi Wan Kenobi in Empire Strikes Back. It’s not black and white. It’s full of opinion. Because my beliefs are different from yours. I am a Celt. To me that means, we understand what it means to be oppressed. And so we should stand up for others who are also oppressed or fighting for their individual rights, as long as it doesn’t impose on ours. As a Geek, those Celtic beliefs are strengthened by the lessons I learned from Star Trek, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one. And by Doctor Who. We are all important, no matter your religion, the color of your skin, your sexual orientation, or what exotic race they come from. They are creatures of this universe and deserve respect. We should celebrate all of our differences. That’s what my next CD, Selcouth, is all about. It’s about being different, and proud of those differences. And not belittling someone else’s. It’s about coming together as a community of people who are different. Who are not like everyone else. We’re Celtic Geeks. Each of us is even different from other Celtic Geeks. But we embrace that difference as a group. I don’t know that this community idea really even resonates with you. I want a better world. And I believe we have the capability to make it better. By working together. By being selfless. By putting my neighbor before my own wants and desires. I feel like that is how we truly come together. But it might just be an idealistic goal that’s not attainable. I don't know. But I feel it essential that we try. 15:31 - SONG: “Health to the Company” sung by Marc Gunn, recorded by Brobdingnagian Bards from Real Men Wear Kilts 18:42 - JOIN THE PUB CHAT (read and see videos at bottom of notes) Are you a Celtic Geek? Chat in the Celtic Geeks group on Facebook. 23:32 - SONG: “Just A Hero” from Selcouth Sometimes we fabricate heroes to satisfy our own dissatisfaction. The mudders of Canton do that in the episode “Jaynestown” on the TV show Firefly. They take a horrible person, Jayne Cobb, who did one good thing for them and put him up on a pedestal. This song continues the story. The mudders realize they don’t need a statue. They can stand up for themselves. They become their own heroes. 26:56 - UPCOMING SHOWS THURS: Coffee with The Celtfather on YouTube @ 12:00 PM Eastern OCT 17: The Lost Druid in Decatur, GA @ 7:00 - 9:00 PM EDT OCT 22: Celtfather Live on YouTube @ 8:00 - 9 PM EDT. When i look on Youtube, it's always older people in their thirties or more. I don't see any youthful looking people playing it. Is it really bad for a kid to play that instrument? Even more weird, I'm 16 and really autistic, so i act like a kid. It somehow fits my weird personality in the most unique way, but most people would only associate the sound as background music for me, they would be surprised if i could actually play it too.” That’s a good question. I know it is a great instrument for kids. But I can think of at least two reasons. First it is typically associated with folk music. Not to say you can’t play anything on it. You can. Look up autoHarpers on YouTube and you’ll find a bunch of younger people playing Pop songs and what not  But it is a stigma. Second, it is a heavy instrument. It might be a bit big for many kids. I do know there is a luthier in California and makes what’s called the sparrow autoharp. It is smaller and lightweight. Not the best sound as far as I’m concerned, but it’s a great introductory instrument. I taught at the California autoharp gathering a few years back. They do a lot of youth outreach. We taught some kids. But even there it seems most kids probably would rather learn to play the guitar. I’m with you though. I love the sound of the instrument but I also feel like it fits my weird personality. I love that I play an instrument that few other people play. And I can also honestly say that no one in the world plays the autoharp like I do. My suggestion is that you just start playing it. Figure out its strengths and weaknesses. Make it your own. You can do some brilliant things on the instrument. Find out more about Autoharp music here.

Even though I had love for the music, I had no idea that I would also find a love for the autoharp.  Almost instantly I bought one and began online zoom lessons and although the first month or so has been difficult, my autoharp and I are now in the honeymoon phase and we are both falling in love with each other daily.  Thank you for inspiring me to take this on.  Your tune "Don't Go Drinking with Hobbits" is one of the first real songs that I am working on and I love singing and playing it.  Being a Tolkien fan, I can't wait to hear your new Hobbit songs.  Thanks for all the work that you do.  Take care.  Howard"

Now I’m [belatedly] listening to your Pride Month episode, and am once again impressed by your fearlessness to wade into an area that you feel is important enough to deserve your attention and representation while remaining unafraid to admit your ignorance (which, as Mark Twain observed, “can be fixed, unlike stupidity, which is permanent”) by selecting a great co-host both musically and (sub) culturally.  I wish I could do more, but I’m supporting a raft of podcasts, and some folks in my real life neighborhood businesses who are also struggling right now. I can’t fly anymore thanks to radiation treatment a few years back, but your Celtic Invasion Vacations sound wonderful - perhaps one day I can figure out how to travel “across the pond” by boat and join you to enjoy the touring"

Songs by Rie Sheridan Rose #210
The music of fantasy and Steampunk author, Rie Sheridan Rose is featured today on the Pub Songs Podcast. Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic Geek culture. I am your Guide. My name is Marc Gunn. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.net. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 0:18 - SONG: “Elves” from Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits 2:33 - WELCOME -- Watch the show on YouTube. I met Rie Sheridan Rose at Excalibur Fantasy Faire. That was the first Renaissance festival I performed at. Rie became a fan of my band Brobdingnagian Bards. But one day, before I got to know her, she handed me lyrics and a cassette out of the blue. She had written a song and asked if I would sing it. I’ll be honest. I was a bit lazy. I didn’t want to try to learn her melody.I never really did anything with the cassette. But I loved the lyrics. So I wrote some music for it. Andrew and I started playing the song. It was extremely well-received. Eventually, it was recorded for the Bards’ album, Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales. One day, I asked her to write lyrics for a Firefly soundtrack. Then I asked if she would write some hobbit drinking songs with me. Then came a pirate and dragon Steampunk project I came up with. Twenty years later, we have over 30 songs that we’ve written together! And while I do talk about Rie every now and then during shows and in emails. I don’t think I ever did a show dedicated to the songs she and I wrote. Nor have I done a podcast dedicated to our music together. Back in June, I finally remedied that during Coffee with The Cetlfather. I’m pleased to share that show with you right now. 4:18 - LIVE COFFEE WITH RIE SHERIDAN ROSE SHOW 5:10 - “Scouring the Shire” from Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits 8:27 - “There’s a Bug in Cabin Six” from As Long As I’m Flyin’ 13:32 - “Come and Be a Pirate” from Pirates vs. Dragons 15:54 - “Keep Them Soaring” from Pirates vs. Dragons 20:18 - “Soul of a Harper” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 24:18 - “Raise a Glass in Parting” from Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits 26:22 - “Browncoats Keep Flyin’” from Sci Fi Drinking Songs I hope you enjoyed that show. Molly Malone 3.) Wild Mountain Thyme 4.) Whiskey in a Jar 5.) Black Velvet Band With honorable mentions to Beer Beer Beer, Fields of Athenry, Green Grows the Laurel, and A Stor mo Chro. Joshua Ohmer: Most famous has to be Danny Boy, although it's not a favorite of mine. Then I'd say Whiskey in the Jar, Molly Malone... And if we can dip into modern Irish music, I'd say that The Cranberries' Zombie and probably something from U2, like Sunday Bloody Sunday should qualify as particularly famous Irish songs. Janine Rinker: That's tough. I've only learned a few... Molly Mallone, Paddy Works on the Railway, a verse-ish of Danny Boy. I'd probably go with The Wild Rover and Whiskey in the Jar as the last two. I'd occasionally hear "They Kept the Pig in the Parlor" from my dad's family, but have to say that's an anti-Irish song. Allan Marcotte: The Wild Colonial Boy, Bold Fenian Men, Whiskey in the Jar, Rising of the Moon and Brennan on the Moor Matt Hughes: Wild Rover, Black Velvet Band, Whiskey in the Jar, Finnegan's Wake and Molly Malone > Celtfather Photo Series Allan Marcotte Celia Garland Janine Rinker Jenn Wallace

Please, please do that for me. My hands are clumsy, My voice is shrill, But your song still gives me a thrill. I am no bard, Music for me is hard. Yet I’m the only one here to play you. So please dear harp, Sing for me, A song to set any soul free.

Re: Sci F’Irish music Janine Rinker replied about Sci F'Irish music: "Hi Marc, I would expect Sci-F’irish music to include original Sci-Fi music, traditional Irish music and Sci-Fi parodies of Irish music.  Per Arthur C. Clarke, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”, which you could use to justify including fantasy with sci-fi, if you like. I would not be surprised if some Scottish music was included, since I think greater care is taken to distinguish Scottish from Irish where one or both groups are a major presence." Crazy Jay says, "Star Wars and Lord of the Rings" I had some comments that came in along with tips from my April Celtfather Live show: Joyce emailed me a donation: "Just a small gift to make up for losing some revenue while on vacation through the end of the month. Your podcast is an oasis some days. And thank you also for being a SJW. How could it ever be right to stand-up for injustice? Crazy." Troy emailed a tip: "Why not tip in advance, right? lol. Looking forward to the show, thank you. Hope you and yours are doing well during these weird times. Stay safe out there." What theme should I explore in upcoming Pub Songs Podcast episodes? Jamie Richards: "Staying Connected or Community might be fun" and "I always like stories, whether a song that is in itself a story, the story behind a song, or just stories in general." Carol Baril: "Anything with a positive spin! Need optimism really bad!" Karen Mitchell Carothers: "Anything that doesn't have to do with COVID. Seriously. I'm even tired of FuMP songs about quarantine. I'd love to hear more about your celtic travels... I've only been to southwest Ireland myself, though we are hoping to go to Scotland next year (mainly south central Scotland, I think... the Carruthers ancestral area... visit the family ghost...)" Jenn emailed: "Hey! Totally unasked for suggestion ?? but you should totally market that one quote “I’ve never known what it means to be normal/nor have I knowingly cared”. I’m a mental health therapist and I would totally buy that as a poster for my office - or as a tshirt for normal life. Just a thought! Thanks!" Melba Langley emailed: "Hi Marc! I stumbled across your demon lullaby in an obscure board back in early 2010. I had a high risk pregnancy,  couldn't drive, and had my terminally ill father in law living with us. I planned a whole nursery theme around this awesome song I downloaded.  My husband freaked out. We went with ladybugs. Fast forward to this wonderful social isolation,  and I told my now 9 year old about the story behind her ladybug decor.  She loved it. She asked me to paint monsters on her walls, and to scribble parts of the lyrics in red on the walls,  simulating blood. For the first time since a computer crash that corrupted the demon lullaby download, I looked you up. My kid has been singing,  "you used to have a sister" all day long.  My husband is freaking out. But hey, we have time to redo her room,  right? In 2010 I found both monsters and demons underneath there bed, btw. I think it's awesome.  If we can get paint delivered, you'll get pictures."

Calligraphy, too, but I dabble in a bunch of things. But that's my challenge. I'm a dabbler. It's hard for me to stay focused and create things. Not enough time or money..." Janine Rinker: "I used to write poetry. Now it's mostly pen and ink and/or colored pencil. It's hard to get started, and I had a lot of scientific illustration projects that I was doing for classes, so I'm in the habit of gridding stuff, which is tedious, instead of drawing much freehand. I've got a partly finished alligator and a pathophysiology illustration I may give up on in my sketchbook now, also a flag and puppy picture I seem to have lost the reference photo for."
