Stay Off My Operating Table with Dr. Philip Ovadia (Heart Surgeon)
Heart disease is largely preventable. In this podcast heart surgeon Dr Ovadia tells us exactly how to stay off his operating table with just a handful of lifestyle and nutrition tips that are quick to implement. Dr Philip Ovadia joins us to discuss the main themes of his upcoming book, detailing how to stay metabolically healthy. We cover what being metabolically healthy means, and identify Phil's 5 key markers to check for in metabolic health. Much of metabolic health can be attributed to lifestyle choices, particularly those to do with diet and exercise and Phil details some common food choices (particularly seed oils and certain processed carbohydrates) that may be causing us some long term problems. Importantly, rather than detailing too much into calorie numbers Phil outlines how food choices might have a bigger impact on helping those who need to lose weight to do so. Dr Ovadia's book "Stay off my operating table" is released Nov 11th 2021. Advances In Psychedelic Psychotherapy with Olie Thomas
Disclaimer: This content in this edition of the podcast is for information purposes only. Although the compounds Olie discusses are currently undergoing renewed scientific interest for the potential to treat such conditions as PTSD, depression and more they are currently class A drugs and not currently legal in the UK and many other countries. If you have a medical condition or are unsure our advice is to contact your GP for further guidance. I this episode:Coach Olie Thomas talks us through his knowledge of psychedelic compounds, their study in clinical trials, interesting historical past, uses and recent developments and the renewed interest in them by university trials over the past 20 years. During 1950-1965 up to 1000 studies were conducted on more than 40,000 participants into the effects of psychedelic compounds. Ram Dass, Timothy Leary and more established writers pivoted to the front of this field of interest. However, cultural change and legal policy during the 1960s saw this branch of plant based psychedelics grouped in with prohibited drugs and clinical research halted thereafter for more than 30 years. Olie explains the recent renewal in interest in these compounds for the treatment of conditions such as anxiety, depression and more.He speaks about his own journey will mental illness and his personal recovery from it with the uses of these compounds. We discuss the ethics of their use, what their new role might be in modern medicine and also explore the parallel branch of psychedelics which is rooted in spiritual growth. This podcast is our most explorative to date and we understand that it is a step away from our more conventional topics. We hope you enjoy the discussion on this episode and you can reach out to Olie with your questions via his social media or the profound fitness website. https://www.instagram.com/oliethomas_/ Your hosts Mike & Byron http://www.profoundfitness.co.uk/

Iatrogenesis
In this episode Mike talks to Byron about his 3rd article in the Coronavirus series. Iatrogenesis was published by StartingStrength.com the world's foremost strength training website and is a discussion about the impact lockdown has had. Iatrogenesis comes from the Greek: Brought forth from the healer. It implies harm done by something intended to be a cure. Byron explains where the choice of title came from and talks through the content in the article. Key points covered in this episode are: The strength coaches perspective of lockdown and managing sickness during this time. What our industry should be doing to be tasked with being essential. All gyms have been forced closed during this phase and Byron argues that many facilities are offering health related products and services but have been grouped in with the non-essential Leisure bracket. A division needs to occur with certain gyms like Profound Fitness and such small studios that are health and athlete focussed being recognised as essential and separate from leisure or entertainment type facilities. Programming 101 Pt 7. Foundation Series
The final episode of the Foundation series. Learn common approaches to programming for strength training and how we change the programme to ensure constant onwards progress. ***For safety and practicality reasons we recommend if you want you to strength train that you seek the advice of a professional and if you have not exercised for some time we would normally recommend that you visit your local GP before you pursue physical activity. In this episode: We discuss 2 types of clients a 55 year old lady and 20 year old male rugby player and how those two different approaches to programme design may differ. We walk you through the basics of simple programming for strength progress and what we commonly do when progress starts to stall. True Programming is not static but it is reactive! Many times personal trainers issue a static document which is more like a to do list of things to do until the client gets bored and wants to try something else. We emphasise the actual programming is still designed around the person but react to them and involve some changes week by week to keep them on track and progressing. We identify the kind of adjustments we make for our two sample clients how the start points may be quite different for each of them and then discuss with some detail the kind of adjustments we would make a program to get people from their novice linear progression all the way through to the end of it and into the early intermediate phase.  We give you some common coaches tips and tricks for and sticking a lift when progress starts to stall and by the end of this podcast you should have a handy bag of tools for how to modify your program to make onwards progress in the first few months of training. If you have any questions or if you are stuck with your progress you can reach out to us at any time via the websites.  Again if you were looking for Byron's e-book on common gym mistakes you can see that at his website www.STRENGTHREVOLUTION.org Contact us through the gym with your questions. http://www.profoundfitness.co.uk/ Find us online Mike https://www.instagram.com/mwfitnesscoach/ Byron https://www.instagram.com/strengthrevolutioncoaching/ If you enjoyed this podcast, please leave us a positive review and share it with those that you think it would help.
