EP31: Spirituality In Business: Entrepreneurs, Seekers, and Business as Spiritual Path
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll get clarity on your business as a spiritual journey with Spiritual Director Christopher Carrick. Christopher and I have observed that entrepreneurs are more likely than the average person to be spiritual seekers. Many of my clients have a spiritual connection to some divinity, something greater than them — outside of a traditional religious institution. They’re delivering their spiritual gifts through the medium of business. Christopher works almost exclusively with entrepreneurs, and he joins me in this episode to explore business as a spiritual path. Key areas discussed in this episode: What does it mean for business to be a spiritual path? The fundamental spiritual questions our businesses bring us to How your business can be a projection of you and teach you about yourself Taking responsibility in your business by connecting to the energy of self-leadership and self-care Channeling spirit or receiving divine downloads in your business How spirituality helps you allow your genius to flow through you The role of boundaries on the spiritual path What difficult clients and client situations are here to teach us How you might be sabotaging your own growth The perspective shift that can allow you to take feedback more effectively and less personally How spiritual issues such as receiving help can manifest in your business The next level always involves greater consciousness, more depth, greater connection. Christopher shares about the spiritual practice of going into the unknown and what it can teach you. In this episode, you’ll learn how to get more client testimonials for your consulting business. We all know that testimonials are gold in your business and that your happy clients want to give you testimonials. They want to say good things about you and help you to get more clients like them. But the sticking point happens when it turns into an obligation for them. We want to ask for testimonials, not delegate To-Do’s. In this episode, I share exactly how to do this so you can grow your business through consistent, supportive client testimonials. Key areas discussed in this episode: How to make it easy for your clients to give you testimonials (including video testimonials!) Eight simple steps to get glowing testimonials that speak to the results you get for your clients The ideal components to include in your testimonials What to do with your testimonials to grow your business What potential clients want to see in your testimonials I know that if you do the things I’ve described in this episode, it’s going to be so much easier for you to get testimonials and share them with your audience. EP29: Why You Need a Virtual CFO For Your Business
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn why you need a virtual CFO for your business with guest Patty Lawrence. Patty, my long-time client and friend, is the Consulting CFO and Founder of TurboExecs. She works with results-oriented business owners to reveal the story behind the numbers with financial tools that skyrocket profitability, productivity and remove barriers to growth and profits. Her clients typically increase the bottom line by at least 15 percent and feel in control of their finances and results. Business owners are often baffled by their numbers and the blurry picture those numbers paint. Their books are at best, a mystery, or at worst, a mess. So it’s no surprise that some business owners are their lowest paid employee. They’re unsure about how much they can afford to invest, or even if they’re prepared for what life throws at them (hello, COVID). Patty knows that. She understands that they need to hear from a calming voice about their business finances. That it’s going to be OK. And that’s exactly what she delivers. If you’re ready to get clear on your numbers, pay yourself well and discover the story behind the numbers in your business, this episode is for you. Get ready to take notes as Patty and I talk about: How a client went from hemorrhaging cash to increasing sales by 20% (and the bottom line by 38%!) by sucking it up and doing the hard work. What every business owner should know: 6 financial management issues that translate across any size business. Information in trends that tell the story behind the numbers in your business. Post-COVID cash position recommendations. Pricing your services for profitability. 3 numbers all business owners must track consistently. The counterintuitive approach she uses that helps her stay in her Joy and Genius zone. How Patty evolved from hourly rates to outcome-based engagements and increased average client size from $2,500 to $132K. You’ll also hear Patty’s remarkable journey from solo entrepreneur to having a team she can trust and the gutsy hire she just made to (gulp) replace herself! Connect with Patty on LinkedIn and head to her website to use her free salary tool, an Excel sheet that helps you set clear financial goals. EP28: 6 Tips for Stress-Free Consulting Client Management
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to have a more profitable and joyful business through stress-free client management. We’ve talked in the past about both selecting perfect clients and getting results through your clients. Client selection is the number one determiner of profitability (and I would add: joy) in your work with clients. But once you have that client on board, the next most important thing is client management. We have to manage the work and the clients so that we are able to achieve results through them - and in this episode, I teach you how. Key areas discussed in this episode: How you can have more success in your client relationships. 6 tips for stress-free consulting client management. There's nothing more important in client relationships than clear communication. The foundation for that communication is trust, shared understanding, shared vocabulary, and shared goals. I explain how to get there by starting your relationship off on the right foot. The one thing you should always plan for in a client relationship (and how it will help you find more success). Why conflict in the beginning of a client relationship can sometimes be a good thing. How to get your clients excited about working together. If you implement just a few of the actions I mention in this episode, you will see yourself on the path to better client relationships, and that means better results for them and more joy for you. But you can control your attitude and your intentions, and doing so can be a huge source of power in your business. On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to use play - yes, PLAY - to become more creative, achieve your goals, and experience more joy in your business. Of all the consulting niches I’ve come across, Strategic Play Consultant Gary Ware’s is my favorite! He joins me to share his experience helping clients with team building and problem-solving through “purposeful play” — something that’s missing from most of our adult lives. You might be thinking…”I don’t have time for play.” Well, Gary says you’re looking at play through the wrong lens. Play and creativity are muscles. They’re skills that we can develop. In addition to fun creative ideas for improving your work and home life, you’ll hear Gary bringing in the science to support making these changes. Key areas covered in this episode: Gary shares the breakthrough experience his client had when he played a game with their sales team. EP24: Stop The Revenue Rollercoaster
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to stop the revenue rollercoaster. You'll never be able to grow your business joyfully if you're constantly fighting the peaks and valleys of feast and famine. I see the revenue rollercoaster happening with people like my client Liz. Liz has many small clients and one huge client. After closing that huge client, she’d coast for so long that she’d start to feel the famine. Another client, Katie, had a really great spring and signed on tons of new business. Busy with delivery, her firm then fell into a lull, and that lull is starting to really stress her out. Sound familiar? In this episode, I’m sharing why the revenue rollercoaster happens in our businesses and what we can do about it. Key areas discussed in this episode: Not getting clients even though you really want some? I share how to know if you’ve unknowingly put a virtual “closed” sign on your business. Which bad habits actually cultivate the feast or famine cycle. 3 changes to make in your business if you want to stop the revenue rollercoaster for good How to know if you’re spending too much time on the wrong activities (like client delivery!) Marketing is not an event. You need ongoing marketing in order to have a steady stream of clients flowing into your business. I talk about how to create and nurture that flow. EP23: Video Marketing is Hot!
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to grow your business with videos. Video marketing is effective, efficient, and powerful — and yet so many consultants hesitate to use video at all or as much as they should. There are many reasons for that, like… “Making videos is hard.” “Making videos isn’t convenient.” “There’s never enough time to make videos. I can’t fit that into my week.” “All the equipment, technology, editing, production…it feels overwhelming.” Sound familiar? I hear you. But the truth remains that video marketing is a powerful growth tool for your business, and there are plenty of ways to overcome these hurdles. Key areas discussed in this episode: Why you need to be using video in your business (including the unique opportunities using video offers you). Some of the key blocks consultants have with using video and how you can get through them. 5 essential ways to use video in your business. Being good on video is a skill that is required for the 2020s. I share my tips for improving your video performance. You might already have videos you’ve forgotten about. EP22: Visioning To Grow The Business You Want
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to grow your business by using visioning and vision statements. Visioning is about envisioning the future and then engineering your path towards it. When you see what you want to have happen in your business, you can get insights and ideas into how to build it. This technique has huge opportunities, but a lot of people aren’t using it. And those that are using it, I find, aren’t using it to the great possibility that they could. Key areas discussed in this episode: I first learned this tool at The Coca-Cola Company when I was in the field (yes, it’s a powerful tool that global multinational corporations are using and you can use it, too). I share exactly what we did and how we used it in corporate business planning. 5 critical reasons why you should use visioning in your business. Vision statements are not mission statements. I share how to create your vision statement and orient towards it. It's easier to achieve what you've already seen yourself doing. I talk about why visioning works and makes it easier to create your reality. How to make your goals more compelling and other ways to use visioning in your business to get clarity and attract what you want. Visioning puts you in a position of clarity, control, and decisiveness — and that leads to the kind of action that grows your business. EP21: Strategic Alliances
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to grow your business with strategic alliances. The truth is, there are not many shortcuts in business. You really just have to put in the work. Many people you might think of as overnight successes have been working for seven to ten years before you ever hear of them. With that being said, this is one of the few methods where you can quickly tap into someone else's audience and put yourself on a path to success faster than doing it on your own. If you have seven to ten strategic alliances, you could almost not do any other marketing and rely on them as referral sources. (You could, but don’t.) That’s how powerful strategic alliances are, and they’re an incredibly valuable foundation for your business. Key areas discussed in this episode: Strategic alliances are intentional connections. I share how to choose who you should be forming strategic alliances with (including the most important questions you can ask yourself). Exactly how to set up strategic alliances that serve your business. How strategic alliances help you develop an abundance mentality. The key part of creating strategic alliances that most consultants miss. Two things that are critical in nurturing your strategic alliances. EP20: Grow Your Business with Case Studies
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to use case studies to build your business. Last week, I talked about getting results for your clients. This week, I’m sharing about how to promote those results and use them to grow your business. This is one of my favorite marketing techniques. I call it, “I’ll have what she’s having.” (You might remember this line from the movie “When Harry Met Sally”!) Case studies are detailed, informative stories of your clients’ success. They’re a much less salesy way to share your results, because they don’t just make claims about how amazing you are; instead, they document your results. Interestingly, potential clients often come away from reading a case study thinking how amazing you are, because the results conveyed it to them. That’s why you need to be creating and sharing case studies for your business. Key areas covered in this episode: ✍️A case study has credibility. It builds authority and a desire for readers to get those results for themselves. I share the process I use to develop case studies that you can use to grow your business. ✍️The exact format to use for your success story, including key questions to answer (and even why it matters what name you give your client in the story). ✍️Case studies can be the core marketing pieces in your business. I share the key thing to make sure your case study does so it’s actually effective. ✍️The different versions of your case study to create so you get the most out of it. ✍️Your case study shouldn’t feel like a marketing piece. I talk about how to make it feel more entertaining and educational instead. I answer some questions consultants have asked me about creating case studies (you can submit your own questions for a future episode by leaving me a voice message at enlightenedmarketing.com/podcast). Case studies are an incredible way to sell your work without selling it (and they’re fun to both read and write). EP19: Results that Get More Clients
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to build your business by getting results for your clients. Years ago when I was in the third year of my consulting business, I was taking a marketing class. One of the assignments was to write down some success stories. I was horrified to realize that I didn't have any success stories. And the reason I didn't have them? My clients weren’t unhappy, but they weren’t implementing the work. When I followed up with them to find out how things were going, they would say, “Oh, well, ah, you know. Yeah, thanks. That was great. Our priorities have changed. We're working on something else right now.” Realizing that was both frustrating and eye-opening. I started to dedicate myself to ensuring that if I started a project, it was going to have success at the end of it. That caused me to learn a lot about what it really takes to get results. I’m known for helping people add $100K to their business in a single offer. I'm known for turning $400K proposals into $800K yeses. I’m known for helping a client add $600K in the first year of working with me, for helping another who was charging $5,000 per client before and now has just sold another $6,000 per month engagement. I could go on and on. I'm talking about the results that I'm getting for my clients and that my clients are getting through working with me. That is what builds my business, and it does more than almost any marketing messaging that I can do. Key areas discussed in this episode: Three essential ways to get better results for your clients. The one thing to do that almost guarantees you’ll get a successful result. You need to set and manage expectations to set your client up for success. I share when to start setting those expectations (it’s sooner than you think) and how to manage them. What an episode of the Dog Whisperer taught me about getting successful outcomes for our clients (weird, but hugely important!). How to use the results you get with your clients to grow your business. EP18: Strategic Visibility
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to grow your business with strategic visibility. Is your business brand visible? When your audience needs a leadership consultant or a finance person or help with their IT, do you come to mind for them? Being visible is a key way to grow your business. Because your audience doesn’t have psychic powers. They’re not going to just find you one day. You need to make the work easy for them - by being visible. Here are some of the key areas covered in this episode: Why you’re not as visible as you should be (there are tons of limiting beliefs that go into this) and how that’s actually (surprise!) a self-sabotage strategy. You want to have a high top of mind awareness in your niche for your audience. I break down what that means and how to get there. You don’t need to be everywhere, but you do need to be way, way more visible than you think. I deliver the “where and how” on this. The visibility strategy my former employer, The Coca-Cola Company, used that you can apply to your business. You want to build your identity as the go-to person for your people in your niche. I share some actionable strategies to use to create a body of work that begins to teach people who you are. I hope this podcast episode helps you shift your beliefs and actions around visibility, so you can help more people, have more fun, and make more money. EP17: Build Your Business with a Team
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to build your business with a team. You are the talent in your business. You're the genius. Everything we can do to take care of you and free you up to do your genius thing is what we want to do. One way to do that is with a team. Working with a team can help you grow your business - even if you’ve been bootstrapping and feel like you don’t need a team. Here are key areas covered in this episode: The trap many capable consultants fall into, how it keeps you from growing, and how to get out of it! When you should consider bringing on a team or, if you already have somebody helping you out, when you should consider expanding your team. A team can (and should) support you in doing more of your genius work, and work that is joyful for you. That’s the reason you’re in business after all, not to answer customer service emails. I share ways to use your team so you can stay in your Joy & Genius Zone. Limiting beliefs that sabotage you from hiring a supportive team (including the big one: I can’t afford it!) and how to break through them. If you’re not getting ROI from your team, you’re not using them right. I share what they need to be doing so that you can get a return and be more profitable. There are four kinds of tasks in your business. I share how to figure out which ones to delegate and which ones to keep. I also have an awesome worksheet that you can use to determine what you should delegate in your business. Get it here: https://enlightenedmarketing.com/delegate/ When you have a terrific team, you get to constantly build new supportive beliefs like: “I can rely on people. My team makes me a better version of myself.” Those are the beliefs that I want you to nurture and cultivate in yourself. And if you do so, I know you'll be a more profitable and joyful business owner. EP15: Proposals That Get a YES!
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to write proposals that get you a yes almost every time. Do you often waste hours and hours on proposals that end up getting rejected? Only to receive back terse emails like, “It’s out of our budget” or “We’ve decided to go in another direction?” This is the reality for too many consultants. Let’s stop wasting time on proposals only to hear a no. Doing proposals right can grow your business exponentially, and in this episode of the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how. Proposals are heinous and dreadful and terrible for almost everyone. You don’t always need to send a proposal, and there ARE ways to make them simpler. Here are the key areas I covered in this episode: A proposal should not be a discovery session, yet that’s how too many of them read. Find out what a proposal is - and is not, what to put in and what to leave out. How to shorten writing time by ensuring you have all the information you need when you sit down to write your proposal. Your proposal does NOT need to be a 50-page document - or even 15. I’ll share why including too much detail can cause you trouble down the road. You are the expert. I share how to write your proposal so you gain trust, protect yourself from “scope creep” and don’t tempt clients to micromanage you. There’s ONE BIG THING you’re not going to do in your proposal that will save you from rejected proposals and avoid the dreaded sticker shock. Yes, it’s going to require you to be brave - but it works. Should you put options in your proposals, and if so, how many? (Plus, I share something profound my husband asked me years ago that I’ve returned to over and over again.) BONUS: You can download my personal template for proposals here: theyesproposaltemplate.com. I’ve used this proposal to close business in the range of low thousands all the way up to a million dollars for a client that we wrote one for, so I know it can be a winner for you as well. If you follow the tips I share in this episode, you’re going to start getting more yeses to your proposals for a more profitable - and yes, joyful - business. EP12: Delivering Client Work with Ease
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to deliver client work with ease. Ted is frustrated by clients who always want to see him in person. The travel there and back eats up valuable time he could be spending elsewhere. And many times the meetings could be done remotely or even by email. When Beth lands big new engagements, she’s excited, but then it sinks in just how much work she now needs to do. From coordinating meetings to designing workshops to outlining new process models to convey key messages ... she loves some of it, but it’s still a LOT. There IS a way to deliver work more efficiently so that the clients get amazing results but you don’t have to put in so much effort. EP11: Pricing Your Consulting Services With Samantha Hartley
On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you’ll learn how to price your consulting services. There are many ways to price your services. When I was a brand new baby consultant, the client asked me what my daily rate was. I didn’t have one and had no idea how to come up with one. I had just gotten the price for some tickets for a vacation that were $1,050 a day. I thought, “That sounds like a good number.” It was a pretty random way to price something, but the client said yes. 🤷🏼♀️ Years later, I was trying to come up with a price for a new client. While touring the facility, the marketing manager revealed to me that the marketing budget the client had per year was $68,000, and that none of their marketing was doing anything. I thought, “Well, they're currently flushing $68,000 a year down the drain. So I think $60,000 would be a good amount to spend with me.” As it turned out, they agreed. Flash forward to very recently when I had a new coaching client who invested $60,000 with me. She said it was the most that she'd spent for anything in her life except her house, and she got a really good return on that investment. But what I think was important is that she had been struggling with not charging enough for her services and working with clients who were too small. She went right out, got a client and told them that the price was $60,000. By investing with me, she'd expanded her idea of her own value and she was able to embody it. And this client said yes to her. “Your price should honor you for the work you put in and for your value.” Pricing is both an art and a science. When it comes down to it, price communicates the value of what you’re offering. In this episode of the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, you’ll learn: What the job of your marketing really is The key factors you need to consider when setting your prices How to access your intuitive answer for what your services are worth How to embody the value of your services to charge what they’re really worth Pricing is both an art and a science, and getting it right helps you have a more profitable, joyful business (which is my wish for you!).
