The Potential Path: Book Discussion: Longpath by Ari Wallach (Part I)
Welcome to the latest episode of The Potential Path. This week I introduce a book I found last year that has been extremely valuable for me in thinking about the impact that I want to have on the world around me. Ever since I read Longpath by Ari Wallach, not many days have passed without me talking about it with someone. The subtitle of the book is: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs. An Antidote for Short-Termism If that gets you curious, then listen to my thoughts on this (at 1.5x speed or more I do recommend), and please do share your thoughts or feedback. If you find this valuable, please share this with someone else. My challenges for us in the week ahead based on this episode: As we notice the responses, the reactions, and the decisions that we're faced with making let's practice asking a couple of different questions: How might my initial automatic response at this moment be informed by short-term pressures or just the way I was taught to think? And if I “Dolly Zoom” out, give myself more context, without losing focus on the issue, what changes in my perspective and thinking appear? -Relevant Links- Longpath by Ari Wallach Floating in Darkness by Ron Garan Building a Product with Purpose? Welcome to The Potential Path!
Albert Einstein said that the most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe. I believe he may be right. But what does it mean? And how can what we believe about the world be a decision? And why would it be the MOST important decision we make? After many years of deep reflection on this idea, I propose the following: We live in a time when change is needed. While we need many changemakers, only a small percentage of humans committing their energy to change is required to reach a tipping point toward futures we desire. Those changemakers need to sustain energy toward the solutions they are working on. Sustaining that energy requires some belief that it is possible to reach that tipping point. That belief or optimism can only be maintained if we SEE references or evidence that progress is being made, that good things are happening, that we are collectively steering things in the right direction. PLENTY of references or evidence is available at all times that would by default cause us to see the world as hostile, fucked, or a lost cause. Therefore the way we DECIDE how to see the world is to intentionally look for solid evidence that would give us hope and optimism. This does not mean ignoring the magnitude of the problems. It means starting them straight in the face, understanding them, noticing how they make us feel… AND then also looking for that evidence of progress to see if perhaps it exists. Welcome to The Potential Path, a show-within-a-show (for now) where we will attempt to implement this exercise as a habit. To see if we can shift our perspective from seeing the problem to seeing the potential. In the words of Ryan Holiday in his book, The Obstacle is the Way, “We can see disaster rationally. Or rather, like Rockefeller, we can see opportunity in every disaster, and transform that negative situation into an education, a skill set, or… a chance to move forward.” In this show, I'll talk about concepts, ideas, books, and any other ideas that come into my life that have the potential to help you in your quest to shape a desired future. We will have conversations with guests who have valuable perspectives on what is happening in the world now, in the future, or perhaps even valuable insights from understanding the past. If you have already committed yourself to help steer humanity in a healthy direction, or if you are considering making a commitment to affecting more positive impact, then this show is here to lift your energy, give you hope, and help you see that it’s possible to decide that the universe is a friendly place working for us. So join me as we CHOOSE The Potential Path and discover how our perception of the world can shape our potential for success. -Connect with Eli- LinkedIn Instagram Twitter Building a software product? #69 Rajamanohar Somasundaram - Aquaconnect: Transforming Rural Communities by Optimizing Aquaculture
In this episode of Products With Purpose, Eli spoke with Rajamanohar (Raj) Somasundaram CEO and co-founder of Aquaconnect Raj, an IITK Alumnus has been recognized at the World Economic Forum as one of the 'Young Global Leaders-2012' and became a ‘TED Fellow in 2009’ for his exceptional leadership and contribution to emerging markets in “Mobile4Good” initiatives. He was also featured as part of the '40 UNDER 40 Ecosapiens' list by The New Indian Express for promoting sustainable aquaculture practices in India. Aquaconnect is a full-stack aquaculture technology platform. Around 5 million rural farmers in coastal communities depend on shrimp & fish aquaculture, where traditional farming practices prevent them from achieving production efficiency and disease prediction. Some of the highlights from this episode: How technology can be leveraged to optimize the food value chain, especially in regions with fragmented landholdings By adopting technology on farms, we can improve the sustainability of protein production, especially in aquaculture How Aquaconnect enables farmers with advisory, inputs, market linkages, and finance The need to integrate solutions with the entire value chain How bringing transparency to the agro value chain leads to better data-driven decisions How Aquaconnect is reducing capital costs by 45% for farmers Make sure to stay until the end to hear Raj’s book recommendation, and something forward-looking that he’s optimistic about right now!
