Why brands need to listen to women with Jackie Frank
I’m delighted to be speaking today with the incredibly powerful and fearless leader, one of Australia’s most experienced media executives, Jackie Frank. Jackie is the inaugural editor of Australian Marie Claire and for 20 years was the General Manager of Pacific Magazines overseeing the fashion, beauty, health, and custom sections for one of the country’s largest publishing divisions. With a long track record of building, developing, and maintaining brands, Jackie is now the founder of the Be Frank Group, where she consults with several local and international organisations on brand development. Be Frank Group is an innovation studio with an unashamedly female focus, connecting brands to the female consumer through initiatives and campaigns. In this episode, I ask Jackie why she believes women are the most powerful market and how they drive the economy through direct buying power and influence. We talk about what women really want and why we are demanding authenticity and genuine connection from brands. Jackie shares why the veil of perfection must be lifted in order to gain brand loyalty from women. We talk about how the landscape has changed since covid, why brands need to be having meaningful conversations with women, and Jackie shares what she hopes to see as the future unfolds. Jackie has been at the top of her game for over three decades and I’m excited to share the power of her learnings as a woman in a key leadership role in the Australian media landscape. I hope this episode gives you powerful insight to reconsider the way you market your brand both personally and professionally. Justine Cullen has spent her life writing for and about women. A reformed beauty editor and award-winning fashion magazine editor, she has formerly held the roles of Editor-in-Chief of the much beloved SHOP Til You Drop and ELLE Australia magazines. How I became fearless with our Host Tory Archbold
Life always delivers us lessons and like most people I don't often talk about the hard times because I am focused on the future not the past.Hard times happen and they happen to everyone which is why at some point in your life when the timing feels right it is important to share them to shine a light for others.I always feel vulnerable sharing this side of my life and when I spoke to the top rating podcast FORTY for an episode with Those Two Girls seeing it shared on socials made my heart skipped a beat with the headline:• The grim reality of her glamorous life• Why keeping her family’s ‘dirty little secret’ nearly killed her• What was really going on behind closed doors and the steps she took to transform post-trauma.Then I saw the first comment from a mother and businesswoman in Queensland and she wrote 'just finished listening, I loved it. It has to be one of my favourites, left me feeling happy' and I knew in that moment I did the right thing because when we own our story we own our power and that means we can empower one another. In this episode I share the powerful steps I took to own my story and my power. How I found the courage to become fearless and step away from judgement. I trust it helps someone today. The Playbook with David Meltzer and Tory Archbold
David Meltzer is a Legendary Sports Executive, Entrepreneur, and Investor who Co-Founded Sports 1 Marketing and formerly served as CEO of the renowned Leigh (“Lee”) Steinberg Sports & Entertainment agency, which was the inspiration for the movie Jerry Maguire. David has been recognized by Variety Magazine as their Sports Humanitarian of the Year and awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He is also the Executive Producer of the Apple TV series 2 Minute Drill and Office Hours which Tory will be interviewed on in series 3. In this Powerful Stories podcast chat David shares how he hit rock bottom and knew life as he was living it had to change. By investing the time to understand and find his true self he found his life purpose and is on a global mission to empower OVER 1 BILLION people to be happy by sharing the tool kit of his life journey. This simple yet powerful mission has led him on an incredible journey to provide one thing…VALUE. I have to confess, this is one of my all-time favourite podcast episodes. David has great energy, great insights and a willingness to share his key learnings to inspire others to seek change and find their happy heart. You will want to hit REPLAY more than a few times... Enjoy with love, TORY x Topics Discussed: 01:21 David Meltzer speaks about faith and understanding. “I thought I was really geared to be more happy, healthy, wealthy, and worthy. But what I started to find out was I was already happy, healthy, worthy, and worthy, and I had to figure out what I was doing to interfere with it. And I think that paradigm shift gave me the power to have faith. And my simple faith is that there's something bigger than me that loves me more than my mom.” (02:36): David Meltzer credits his wife for his success. “I have to give credit to my wife because I was on a journey as a multi-millionaire and I was writing the most notable sports agency in the world, which gave me access to things that even billionaires couldn't do or afford. And so I'd been lying to myself for many years, surrounding myself with the wrong people, the wrong ideas. And all of a sudden my wife, as I came home one morning at five 30 after lying to her partying, told me she wasn't happy, told me she was leaving me, told me to take stock in who I was and most importantly, what I wanted to become. And that moment to me changed my life because I had no idea. Because nobody was telling me no. I always say, be careful of all the people that say yes to you and surround yourself by the people that actually give you the radical humility to know that you don't know what you don't know. And so, although I was upset with my wife when she told me at first that she was leaving by the next day, I realized she was right.” (04:42): David Meltzer does not believe in limiting himself and discusses why his values give him purpose. “My values started with gratitude. When I realized that gratitude would give me perspective, it allowed me to to find the light, the love, and the lessons in everything that I did.” (06:25): David Meltzer talks about life lessons and becoming accountable to source. “When we take accountability, we now have control by surrendering. How am I utilizing fear to either get me up, get me started, get me back started? Or how am I using fear to get outta my own way? (08:07): Tory Archbold asks David Meltzer how he learnt the art of forgiveness. “So the way that I mastered that was starting to read about forgiveness and the best text that I could find about forgiveness was a Course in Miracles with Marianne Williamson which showed him the art of forgiveness within the context of his own values. “It also talks about forgiveness in the realm of time. Alot of people don't understand that time is so important. If you look at the greatest leaders in all industries, that they all have studied and mastered time for different reasons. One, some people have mastered time in the past to understand how not to limit themselves with the meaning that they give inflection points or defined moments according to the quantitative measure of time. Obviously today, in the present, multiple famous and productive people have mastered time for today. But even more importantly, in the future. And believe it or not, forgiveness is one of the key skill sets to maximizing the quantifiable value of time.” (10:03): David Meltzer talks about switching his mindset, and making others accountable. “When I was 13 years old, I was completely broke. Poor six kids, single mom, my mom worked two jobs, packed my dinner in paper bag, traveled around after teaching second grade raising five boys and one girl and then filling up turn styles at convenience stores with greeting cards just so we had enough money sometimes for food stamps so we could eat. But when I was 13, I got a real watch, a great gift, I got a watch and it was my prize possession. You could imagine a poor kid getting a really fancy real watch. So the very first day I could, I wore it to school and the exact opposite of what I thought was going to happen happened. I thought people were going to look on me is if I was one of the rich kids or, but no, it was one of the most discouraging things people made fun of me. They said that fake watch, you know, you're such a loser.” “I came home crying and I put the watch in my drawer and my mom noticed I wasn't wearing the watch anymore. And she asked me why. And I said, Well, because everyone's making fun of me. They said, I can't afford a watch. Did I steal it? Is it fake? And I said, Mom, I'm never gonna wear that watch. And she said, Oh, she said, That's okay. She said, Someday you're, I get choked up thinking about it. She said, Someday you're gonna be so rich that you could wear fake watches and everyone will think they're real. In fact, they won't believe you when you tell them that they're fake. And that's exactly what I did and it's exactly what happened. And so to this day, I wear fake watches, the nicest looking, nicest brands of watches and I give them away and I tell people that they're fake.” (12:45): Tory Archbold asks David Meltzer what makes a great leader? “Great leaders are intelligent followers and you know, I wear my crown on my heart, not on my head anymore. And in the sports entertainment world, so many people wear their crown on their head. And I learned through radical humility to lead with my heart, my feelings, in fact five levels of attention all relative to the way we feel. I started to do the right things, say the right things, think the right things, believe the right things, which made me feel the right things. And if I could feel the right things, I could lead with my heart by being an intelligent follower, by finding out what people are doing today, what they like about it, what they don't like, and how I could be of service or value, but also how they could help me or if they knew anyone that could help me.” (13:35): What is David Meltzer’s life mission? “Building and creating happiness is to create a community of sponsors and power sponsors, people with open minds, open hearts and open hands that are willing to either help others or find someone to help others and vice versa. And so through that ego scarce industry of sports and entertainment, I found my heart, I found humility and I found the ability to lead as an intelligent follower, not as a manipulator, a liar, cheater, an oversell, a backend seller, a denier, but instead a supplier, a supplier, an supplier of inspiration. And I apply my why, I'm not in search of it anymore.” (18:05): David Meltzer talks about what is takes to be real. “ I get all this extra credit for perspiring which is so funny. And I want more men to feel comfortable perspiring. And I want women to also equally feel comfortable having an emotional perspiration called emotional crying. The more true you are to yourself in the pursuit of your own happiness and the pursuit of your own potential, you too will achieve that passion that you share with me, that purpose that you share. And even profitability.” 19:32): Tory Archbold asks David Meltzer how important is a team that surrounds you? “Well, I built a team around me by being aware of who feeds me. 80% of my time was spent on people, ideas, circumstances, and events that bleed me. And what I found was if I was more discriminative about those people that feed me, that I would feed those that feed me so they could feed me and others even more. And this spectrum of quantified values that I put into my teammates are the most essential. When I say teammates, I mean the people, the collective consciousness around me, whether it be professional or personal. My biggest downgrade wasn't professional bleeding, it was personal. I had surround myself with all the wrong people and all the wrong ideas. They were bleeding me. And I was spending 80% of my time on people that believed me on circumstances, events, and situations that were bleeding me. And when I went ahead and said to myself, I am gonna allow people to fall away from me that are bleeding me or even fire them from my life, that I was gonna create a collective consciousness of sponsors and power sponsors that give and receive through three steps. Doing things differently with global powerhouse Kate Vale
In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I have an insightful conversation with the global powerhouse that is Kate Vale. Kate is General Partner at ALIAVIA Ventures, an investor, advisor, board member and a mum. I’m also lucky enough to call her a friend. As the former Managing Director @ Google and YouTube, Australia and New Zealand, Kate grew the business from $0-$500m in 9 years. As Managing Director, Kate launched Spotify to be the #1 streaming service in the Australian and New Zealand regions. Leading both businesses to IPO. As an investor, Kate has invested in outstanding early stage companies with the current valuation exceeding $3.5 billion. Kate Vale’s achievements include being hired as Google's first employee in Austraia / NZand growing that team from zero employees over 500 where she created the maternity leave policy at Google because it didn’t exist when she had her first baby. She played a pivotal role in scaling the business incredibly quickly setting it up for regional success. Fast forward to today, and Kate is the co-founder of ALIAVIA Venture, a venture capital fund that invests in females in the tech industry who are seeking to launch a global business. The fund was launched with business partner Marissa Warren after they discovered in 2019 that women were receiving less than 5% of all venture capital funding. Kate talks about working in the male-dominated VC world and reveals some more truly staggering statistics about the gender inequity in this space, including the fact that at present there are less than a dozen female General Partners across the approximately 70 venture capital funds currently operating in Australia. Kate is a woman who believes in ideas and is willing to back great ideas, and she also believes in people. She also eschews the fear of failure in favour of jumping off the cliff and backing herself, no matter what. This is a truly powerful entrepreneur who is using the power of experience and connection to deliver impact on a global scale, and I hope you take as many learnings away from this conversation as I did. Much love, Tory xox Topics Discussed [1:21] Kate initially started in the human resources industry, and then pivoted into a sales-based role in the tech industry. In 2002 she moved over to Google after succeeding through a 12-hour interview process, and went on to hire several hundred employees over her time at the company. [5:27] The second stage of Kate’s tech career saw her move across to what was at the time a small music start-up called Spotify in 2011. She grew the office to be the largest music streaming platform across Australia and New Zealand, and helped launch Spotify’s Asian division. [7:05] Kate then gained some experience sitting on the boards of companies including Tourism Australia and Tourism Tasmania. [7:15] Today, Kate is the co-founder of venture capital fund ALIAVIA, which invests in female tech founders. Kate discusses the biggest challenges she sees with female entrepreneurs in 2022, including balancing personal life with professional life, difficulties accessing funding, challenges in being taken seriously, owning accomplishments and the fear of failure. [11:24] Kate believes we should reframe ‘failures’ in business as valuable lessons. [12:23] Why female founders get such a small slice of the funding pie, and how her venture capital fund, ALIAVIA, is proving the naysayers wrong. Kate and her business partner, Marissa Warren, are both passionate about supporting female tech founders. [16:39] We discuss the need to promote more women internally so that women pitching female-centric ideas are not blocked by men who don’t see the potential in those ideas. [18:19] Kate shares what she’s looking for in prospective partners, (including at least one female founder who holds significant equity in the business and has a C-level role) and how to create a stand-out pitch when approaching a venture capital firm seeking funding. She reveals that the founder herself is as much a part of the VC firm’s decision as is the pitch – and says she seeks a founder who lives and breathes her business and is working tirelessly to solve a problem that matters. [22:38] How to use technology in your business to deliver growth, including investing in R&D that delivers genuine value. [26:07] Kate explains the type of female-led businesses she is looking to invest in; namely those in the enterprise technology and consumer tech spaces, as well as those using Saas (software as a service) revenue models. [27:41] Doing things differently, and the meaning behind the name ALIAVIA. [30:05] Kate’s advice on balancing family with a high-powered career Where to find Kate Vale Website: www.aliavia.vc LinkedIn: Kate Vale Where to Find Tory Archbold Are you ready to take a powerful step forward in business and in life? Learning to Surrender with Olympian Stephanie Rice
In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I chat to the fabulous and fearless Stephanie Rice. You probably know her as the former Olympic swimmer, but she has undergone something of an evolution in recent years, and there’s much more to this powerful woman. Stephanie is a conduit for sharing her story and showing others that challenges can become possibilities, and she is brilliant at leveraging her huge social media following and the community she has built there to help others. However, as Stephanie will tell you, she has a love/hate relationship with social media. One of the major values she leads her life by is authenticity, and in this we are very aligned. I personally believe that human connection is the best connection, and Stephanie and I discuss how she prioritises business partnerships that align with her truth and also value human connection. We discuss self-love, and the process of learning to surrender your desires to the universe, and being open to receiving what comes your way. Stephanie shares how many people assume she is a naturally happy person, but in fact, she says that she has worked hard to become the happy, positive person she is today. Steph also opens up about her daily practices, including cultivating gratitude and appreciation every single day, and the mantra she recites every morning upon waking. Stephanie Rice truly is a woman who is grounded in her authenticity, and who is doing a stellar job of building longevity in business by virtue of knowing and being herself. I took many learnings away from this conversation, and I hope that you do too. Much love, Tory xox [1:16] Stephanie discusses the support she received from Jackie Frank, former editor of Marie Claire Australia, when she was at the height of her success as an Olympic swimmer. [2:30] She opens up about the dark period she experienced following her swimming career, and where she’s at with this now, in addition to what encouraged her to share her struggles publicly when the time was right. [5:39] Stephanie talks about feeling like a ‘nobody’ after she retired from swimming. We discuss the difficulty of transitions, particularly when moving on from a career that we have linked our self-worth and identity to. [07:06] Finding self-love and self-acceptance is still a process for Stephanie. She takes time to read, meditate and sit with her emotions when they come up, and this helps her to meet herself. [9:45] Stephanie tries to build rituals into her daily life, such as meditating to connect with her intuition and receive guidance. [11:40] She talks about the difficulty of learning to surrender, especially being a driven, successful woman and the dichotomy of going after things versus surrendering and being open to receiving. [13:36] Stephanie shares the values that allow her to step into her intent and purpose on a daily basis, including integrity, authenticity and making sure her partnerships involve a mutual exchange of energy. [15:03] Steph is working on being secure in herself, and is enjoying a new phase of feeling self-assured from a solid internal place, where she doesn’t need external validation like she once did. [18:45] Stephanie shares her love/hate battle with social media, and how she values one-on-one in-depth conversations over surface-level connections. She opens up about how when her energy changed, she noticed that her following mirrored her evolution by becoming much more positive, too. [20:44] She talks about the joys of positive connection via socials, plus the pressures of social media from a business perspective, including what potential partners look for and the difficulties of being assessed via the analytics of her Instagram account. [25:30] Stephanie shares her morning rituals, including telling herself every morning, “Something amazing will happen today.” [29:10] Stephanie opens up about being ready for a relationship and creating a family of her own, and talks about what she’s looking for in a partnership, as well as the process of surrendering her desires to the universe. The Power of Women’s Work with Nicole Kalil and Tory Archbold
In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I talk with Nicole Kalil, direct from the US. Nicole is a former C-suite executive, who decided to step away from her role at a Fortune 500 company to focus on her true calling – building women’s confidence. Now a keynote speaker, host of the ‘This Is Woman’s Work’ podcast and author (her first book, Validation is for Parking, is out October 4), she is a wealth of wisdom and inspiration. We have a beautiful conversation around having the confidence to step out of what does not feel right for our truth, our intent and our purpose to move into what is right for our destiny. As well as talking career U-turns, we discuss what true confidence really looks like, how to reframe our failures in order to deepen our trust within ourself, and the power of women who support each other. We also talk about how showing up online from a place of authenticity and genuine purpose is received with so much more support and connection; as well as what the ‘false equation’ is and how to leave this behind in order to build your confidence from the inside out. Powerfully, Nicole says that it’s not about becoming confident, but about connecting to your confidence. Personally for me, the women my life lift each other up – their success story is my success story, and Nicole absolutely shares this outlook, so it was a pure delight to connect with her. I believe that all women deserve to step up and into their power, and they can only do that when they have confidence – so this one is a must-listen. Much love, Tory xox Topics Discussed [1:08] Nicole didn’t know the magic of women authentically and abundantly supporting each other until recent years, and says her life changed when the uncovered this power. She is seeking to reframe the concept of ‘woman’s work’ in a way that each individual woman gets to decide what her work is – wherever purpose leads you to be lit up from the inside. [4:49] Nicole says that statistically, women have less confidence than men in their 30s, 40s and 50s, but we weren’t born this way. She argues that lacking confidence isn’t a ‘you’ problem, it’s a society problem, and goes on to say that true confidence is when you trust yourself. The key is to own who you are, know who you’re not and choose to embrace all of it. [7:32] Moving into a place where you believe you are enough involves quietening what Nicole calls the ‘head trash’ – the voice in our mind that says things about us, to us, that are rarely true. [10:54] Nicole reveals the game-changing moments that took her on the path to where she is today; including what she describes as delivering ‘an Oscar-worthy performance’ as a C-suite executive, while being lonely and lacking in confidence behind-the-scenes, and the subsequent decision to step away from her lucrative corporate career to follow her calling. [15:47] Navigating the loss of identity that comes with leaving behind the corporate career you have become known for; stepping forward to show people who you have become and how to answer the question ‘What do you do?’ as a fledgling entrepreneur. [17:59] We talk about how showing up on social media or online when our confidence is low, usually receives a response that reflects this. On the flip side, when we show up from a place of confidence and truth, our content resonates so much more deeply. Nicole says that outsourcing has helped her conserve energy and protect her authenticity. [20:43] Nicole shares how she built her powerful tribe on social media, including being clear and authentic in how she shows up, which helps her people to gravitate towards her, as well as strategic moves such as joining social media support groups to boost her exposure and engagement. [22:23] Nicole speaks about the ‘mean girls syndrome’, and her belief that this kind of behaviour stems from insecurity. [25:42] Nicole shares the three powerful steps she recommends you take right now in order to gain confidence. How To Be Confident with Mel Schilling
In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I chat with the fabulous psychologist-turned-confidence coach Mel Schilling. I believe you can’t step into your power zone if you don’t know how to step out of your comfort zone, so I one hundred per cent back Mel’s philosophy that courage is essential for building genuine confidence. Mel and I share a lot of synchronicities, we are both courageous and reach out to our network and call on the power of connection. This is exactly what Mel did to land one of her biggest career stepping-stones, a role as a Relationships Expert on a little show you may have heard of called Married At First Sight. We cover everything from calling on support during challenging times, to auditing the relationships in our life to help us live the life that sets our heart on fire. I truly believe that owning the power of our story allows us to be seen, and this comes only once we are confident with who we are – so if you’re seeking to make a global impact, this episode is for you. Much love, Tory xox Topics Discussed [1:02] Mel sees courage as the gateway to confidence, and says that first comes courage, then confidence, then competence. She also shares that the most courageous thing she has ever done is put herself forward to a job as a relationship expert on Married At First Sight – when there wasn’t even a vacancy. A big part of turning this move into a success was the way Mel drew on the power of her network to connect her with the right people along the way. [6:16] Mel opens up about the vision board and other manifestation techniques she employed to help her secure her dream role, including NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). [8:05] How Mel stepped into her power to own who she was and find her soulmate after spending her entire 30s single. At almost 40, she decided to practice what she was preaching in her coaching work and stepped into online dating, where she met her now-husband. [11:15] Mel talks about how as women we can take ownership of ourselves to come into our power, and how this involves knowing which things to compromise on (and which we shouldn’t). Ultimately, it’s about letting go of what doesn’t matter – usually this is around other peoples’ opinions, and it involves letting go of years of conditioning. [13:31] How to vibrate at a high level to attract the right people into your life by conducting a ‘relationship audit’ in your life. [17:32] Mel opens up about her challenging experience being the target of a vicious backlash following a comment she made in the media, and how she dealt with it – including leaning on her inner circle, putting practical boundaries in place around social media and taking time out. [22:26] We talk about how often we see the light once we’ve learnt the lesson that the challenge has been sent to teach us. Other times, it’s about accepting that the situation is outside of our control, and choosing our response. [24:05] Mel’s next powerful step will be running her own production projects (watch this space) to help people live out their full potential, through building their confidence. Navigating conflict with Mia Madafferi
In this episode of the Powerful Steps podcast, I speak with the impressive Mia Madafferi – lawyer, successful female entrepreneur and founder of Grey Rock Consulting. Mia is highly experienced in navigating complex disputes – so if you’re facing challenges with a difficult personality in your business or life, this episode will be an invaluable listen. Mia delivers some excellent expert advice around dealing with high-conflict and narcissistic personality types, from creating – and maintaining – boundaries even when facing resistance, to the transformational perspective shift that will change everything for you in this dynamic. During this conversation, Mia shares that her next powerful step is to go international, and she currently has some exciting group programs in the works, so watch this space! I learnt so much during this conversation, and I hope you do too. [1:32] Mia takes us through her career backstory, from having a passionate sense of compassion and justice from her early years, to deciding to pursue law even in the face of resistance from her family, and ultimately learning to back herself. [4:06] Mia talks about the traditional nature of the legal profession, fitting (or not fitting) into the traditional mould of a lawyer, and how she started to excel when she stopped trying to fit into that box and stepped into her own truth. [6:00] Learning to backing yourself is a process that requires listening to your intuition and cutting out the noise. Responding to people who say ‘you can’t do that’ involves taking them on a journey until they are advocating for you too. [8:25] When navigating high-conflict situations with a narcissist, the key is in accepting who they are, knowing it’s not personal, creating boundaries and standing by them. [13:16] Mia started Grey Rock Consultancy following personal experiences and situations that caused her to realise she was constantly people-pleasing. She talks about the importance of realising when you need to reach out for support when dealing with narcissistic behaviour. [15:58] Tory shares some of her own journey dealing with difficult conflict, and subsequently winning full custody of her daughter and a restraining order. [17:05] Much of the advice around how to navigate narcissistic or high-conflict personalities can be so hard to apply when you’re personally invested, so Mia shares the enormous focus shift that you need to take in order to successfully deal with these situations. [20:54] Why dealing with these types can be like dealing with a toddler, and acknowledging that the process for women to emerge out the other side when dealing with narcissistic or high-conflict personalities is an individual journey. Driving Global Change Through Fashion with Vanessa Bell
In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I sit down with Vanessa Bell, who you might know from her Instagram account as Fashion to Farmer. I first met Vanessa on a virtual coffee date during lockdown a couple of years ago and have been so impressed with her story of transformation, from a successful career in fashion as a model to land guardian and one of the largest female landowners in Australia. Vanessa is passionate about supporting the environment by reducing landfill and microplastic pollution, and she decided to leverage the relationships she’d formed over decades to inspire a new generation to consider using wool. She is currently about to take her brand global, so watch this space. We talk about how women can rise like a phoenix after being burnt to the ashes, rising back up to meet ourselves and become the women we are today. Vanessa shares how she focuses on self-care, saying she believes we need to nurture ourselves first and foremost. I believe that life is about synchronicities and opportunities; and passing on the gifts we’ve been given through lived experience, and Vanessa really embraces this in her own life. I hope you love her story as much as I do. Much love, Tory xox [1:09] Vanessa shares her beginnings in the backstreets of Kings Cross in Sydney, when she approached an industry figure after a friend’s mum suggested she might be a good fit for modelling. She spent her twenties travelling and modelling, returning to Australia to work in finance and then media, before meeting her husband and becoming a farmer. [2:41] Vanessa found her career purpose when she embraced and owned her story. [4:31] When we first met, Vanessa was avoiding stepping forward and telling her story due to a fear of judgement. She began to understand we all have our own unique power, and for her, understanding the power of community and connection and leaning into a group of women that saw her, supported her and wanted the best for her gave her a sense of freedom to become who she is. Her journey through my Powerful Steps program gave her a newfound sense of vitality and creativity and today, Vanessa wants to use the contacts she’s forged through fashion to drive global change. [7:10] When Vanessa first joined Powerful Steps, I asked her who would be the ultimate person she’d like to partner her brand with, and she replied, ‘Victoria Beckham’. Then, when she simply asked, magic began to unfold. Vanessa is in the process of launching her first capsule range of women’s knitwear in collaboration with a contact from Victoria’s team. [12:32] Vanessa talks about life on the land, living on a cattle station on the mid-north coast of NSW, which is the largest landholding on the Eastern seaboard. She shares that synchronicity with nature is a healer for her, and mentions carbon farming and other projects she works on in addition to her core business. [12:51] Vanessa opens up about the importance of getting back to our core, and overcoming negative narratives from the past. She believes we all have the capacity to change, and that it’s important to embrace change and learning, while leaning into the community for support. [14:44] We discuss the daily inner rituals Vanessa uses to maintain inner balance while being a wife, mum and business owner and entrepreneur driving impact, including grounding, deep breathing, gratitude, and being clear about her intentions at the beginning of the morning. She says self-care is not an indulgence, it’s a discipline. [18:09] Vanessa talks about a traumatic life experience in 2007 after which she went partially blind in her left eye for six months, and how this led her to realise we have choices and capacity for growth and change in our lives. Since this experience, Vanessa has been passionate about bringing vibrancy to the world. Life on the farm teaches her about animals’ capacity for love, and understanding that we’re all part of this source. [20:03] Vanessa discusses her plans to launch her capsule collection and share the message about choosing wool, reducing landfill and microplastics at a global level. [20:56] She says that to stay in your power, you need to get back to the core of who you are, and you have a choice to ‘either cut to the core or rot to the core’. Vanessa recommends focusing on mindfulness, which she does through knitting, lawn-mowing and self-care. Want to know more about Vanessa? Surprising the naysayers with Alex Fevola
In this episode of the Powerful Stories podcast, I talk to businesswoman and entrepreneur, Alex Fevola. Alex started her career as a single mum doing it all, and has now just celebrated 10 years as an entrepreneur at the top of her game. Through it all, self-belief has been her superpower. What began 10 years ago as helping other women to step into their power by transforming them through makeup and photography, evolved into a successful brand, Runway Room, with this same mission at its core. In addition to having written a bestselling book, Silver Linings, that has had several print reruns, Alex is currently planning the expansion of Runway Room into a national and soon-to-be-global brand. Alex Fevola has a wonderful story of a success and survival and quite frankly, she’s my type of woman. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it. Much love, Tory xox [2:02] Alex shares where her journey began and how she found her power after finding herself a single mother after losing her partner, when a sense of surivival kicked in and created her hunger for success. She talks about her early photography career, and how it evolved to what is now Runway Room. [6:32] Alex says that other women can use self-belief to translate their dreams into reality by truly knowing and understanding their craft or product, and genuinely believing in it. She says that sharing your genuine passion and knowledge is a recipe for success. [8:41] Alex shares that she has not always possessed the confidence she has now – in fact, throughout her early career and how she felt like a fraud and felt like people didn’t take her seriously. She reveals that it took a long time for her to feel confident and stop fearing judgement BUT she was able to retain her belief because she knew what she was doing was genuine. [10:16] On being the face of the brand and interacting on a grass roots level with her customer as the brand founder. Alex worked six days a week in her stores for several years, and one benefit of this was receiving invaluable direct feedback from the customers; she credits this close connection with her customer as creating a line of ‘movers’. [10:55] Alex opens up about the motivation for sharing her story and writing her bestselling book, Silver Linings. She responds to the idea that people were surprised that she had the talent to write it, and the thousands of messages she has received from women in response. [16:13] How Alex’s teenage daughter, Mia, felt about her sharing their story publicly, and how today she is an empowered young woman. [19:33] Opens up about managing life with four children including one still under five, while still running her successful business. She says that balance doesn’t exist, instead it’s more about juggling the priorities depending on what needs her attention on any given day. [20:56] Alex talks about her next powerful steps, including taking Runway Room national via plans to partner with a national retailer, in addition to launching the brand into the UK in April 2023 – and potentially writing another book in the future.
