Surf Church, much like the Blues Brothers mission (as Laurel points out) is a mission from God. The mission of Surf Church is to reach surfers with the gospel. The vision, when there are waves, the presence of God through his people, is present in the water. He starts the injustice of the week by diving off the deep end. They discuss justice vs. grace. Autistic and Audacious with Surfers Healing and John Pike
Show Notes John Pike founded the Wilmington chapter of Surfers Healing, an organization to help expose children with autism to the wonderful, calming and therapeutic world of surfing. This mission is near and dear to John’s heart as a father of a child who was diagnosed with autism at two years old. As with any parent, John searched for resources and community to broaden the horizons of his son. Thus, Surfers Healing came to town. John discusses autism as a diagnosis and shares his journey with us. He divulges his philosophies and gets down to the nitty gritty discussing racial justice and the stigma surrounding autism in minority communities. Surfers Healing is always free and runs off of dedicated, competent and compassionate volunteers, who are also amazing surfers. If you see the dolphin, that’s Surfers Healing. John, in all of his extra time, also started Different Not Less Charters. He utilizes his captain’s license to expose his “Autism Ohana” to inshore fishing, sunset cruises or just a ride on the water. Miguel “El Guapo” Lozano, Spanish Freediving Champion
The second deepest man in the world joins the ladies to discuss the in’s and out’s of the sport of freediving. Miguel Lozano is Spain’s top diver and a really fun guy. Philosophy of Surfing, Politics and Injustice with Peter Maguire
Laurel and Ashley loved talking to Peter Maguire so much they cannot wait to have him back. What did they talk to him about exactly? The verdict is still out. Peter, Malibu Colony 1982 Post Session Notes -Laurel just got back from Puerto Rico and talks about the waves. Turns out they were good. -Peter has been surfing locally with his sons. The surf was surprisingly powerful but fun. Peter hates ego and crowds so tries to hit spots that are less occupied. That’s a tall order in Wrightsville Beach. -Growing up surfing in California, Peter learned proper Taliban mentality, which he admits isn’t the most fun way to do it. -Peter tells us about his reckoning in relation to surfing. -He almost drowned as a child! -They digress into a discussion about martial arts among other things. Special Episode- While Covid Has Us Twiddling Our Thumbs….
Update: The first case of covid19 in Belize was confirmed the evening after this recording. Laurel and Ash take this opportunity to record their first remote podcast episode. There is a lot Ashley is missing out on in regards to the virus and she helps Laurel can fill in some gaps. Ashley is impressed with how proactive Belize has been in regards to the virus. Airports and schools are closed. Social distancing and self imposed curfewing are currently suggested. It just doesn’t seem like critical equipment in an actual pandemic. -Is the toilet paper shortage just a reaction to the sensationalism of the media? -The ebbing tide is a great opportunity to get creative and grow. Episode 14- Our Obsession With Food
Who doesn’t obsess about food? Laurel and Ashley sure do! What’s good to eat before surfing or freediving and what’s absolutely NOT. They engage in a taste test, McDonald’s donut sticks vs. Laurel’s husband’s homemade zucchini tart. Most importantly, how to begin controlling uncontrollable food obsessions. Family, busyness, all of these things can consume you. -Be more intentional with your time.
