Hey Folks, Welcome back to our latest interview edition of the Pop Culture Squadcast. In this episode, we spoke with comic writer David Pepose. David is known for his creator-owned titles Spencer and Locke, Going to the Chapel, Scouts Honor, and The O.Z.He started his comic career interning at DC comics and was highly respected as the head of the comic book review team at Newsarama before diving full time into his freelance comic creating. His work has been nominated for multiple industry awards and his catalogue of work is continuing to grow into new publishing venues. His latest work, The O.Z., is a book that he is publishing through Kickstarter. The first double-sized issue was funded last year and currently the campaign for the second installment is underway. Backers have until September 15th to get behind this excellent comic.David has grown as a writer and creator over the years that Pop Culture Squad has been around and he continues to be one of our favorite interviewees. In our latest episode of the Pop Culture SquadCast, we spoke to comic book writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson. Phillip's catalog of published comic work has increased significantly in recent years. He created and wrote the hit DC Comics Black Label series The Last God and currently is writing for both DC and Marvel comics. He is penning Action Comics for DC and the newly launched Alien book for Marvel, among others.Phillip has an amazing "day job" as a member of the United States Army and has come to comic book writing later than others. His roots in comic publishing come from the creator owned space with books like Last Sons of America that was published by Boom! Ep. #019 SquadCast Interview with Comic Book Writer Jeffrey Burandt
Our latest Pop Culture SquadCast features comic writer Jeffrey Burandt who is in the midst of campaign to fund his latest comic on Kickstarter. Burandt's style is satirical with warm heart. The best part about his writing is that while the things he writes about run the gamut from straight humor to life and death sci-fi, the reader gets the sense that Burandt is enjoying the telling of the story regardless of topic or genre.We got a chance to talk to him about his new project with Jason Gongour called Killer Bad, and we also talked about his other projects including Odd Schnozz from Oni, anthology projects Love is Love and Pandemix, and more.Killer Bad looks to be a hell of ride. In this episode, we spoke with comics editor extraordinaire Shelly Bond.Anyone who has been paying attention to comics over the past thirty years knows that Shelly has shepherded some of the most fantastic comic stories to ever come along. Her decades long tenure at Vertigo brought us books like Fables, Lucifer, American Virgin, Clean Room, Euthanauts, and so many more.Over the past few years Shelly has been curating and publishing comics through Kickstarter. Her anthologies include Femme Magnifique, Insider Art, Heavy Rotation, and Hey Amateur!Her latest offering which is still available to back is called Filth and Grammar, The Comic Book Editor's Secret Handbook. We have another great interview to bring to you. This one is with comic writer Vito Delsante. He has a current Kickstarter campaign in progress for the long awaited graphic novel World War Mob: La Collezione Completa .We spent some time discussing the origins of this comic project. It sounds and looks fantastic. We highly recommend backing this project.The Kickstarter campaign ends in twelve days on January 27, 2021, and this is one that you won't want to miss. A few weeks ago, I had a chance to have a conversation with comic book writer and editor Erica Schultz.In the past couple of years her writing credits have really started to pile up. She has written for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Red 5 Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, her own label Vices Press, and more.Erica also has taught lettering for Comics Experience and is currently an instructor at the Kubert School.Her creator owned comic series Forgotten Home, with art by Marika Cresta, was published as a Comixology Original, and she is currently writing The Legacy of Mandrake, the Magician for Red 5 Comics.We talked about her process and her latest projects. Today, we bring you an new spotlight interview. In this session, we spoke with comics writer Justin Jordan.Justin has been a professional comic book writer for over a decade now and is the co-creator of fan favorite indie comics The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, which has recently been optioned as film by Allnighter, and Spread among others. He has worked for DC Comics and Valiant Entertainment as well as other licensed properties while developing his creator owned comics.In collaboration with artist John Amor and letterer Micah Myers, Justin has been publishing the webcomic Urban Animal on Webtoon.com for a couple of years now. He and John are bringing the webcomic to print through a kickstarter campaign in conjunction with Rocketship Entertainment. Welcome back to another spotlight interview. In this session, we spoke with award-winning comics creator and screenwriter Joe Harris.Joe has a written a new comic comic, Disaster, Inc., debuting this week from AfterShock Comics. It is drawn and colored by Sebastián Piriz and lettered by Carlos Mangual.He has written for Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, and Storm King Comics, among others. He is well known for shepherding the return of The X-Files to comics at IDW beginning in 2013. Some of his other titles include: Great Pacific, Snowfall, Rockstars, Slingers, and Surviving Nuclear Attack.Harris also wrote the screenplay to Sony Pictures' Darkness Falls. They are the creative team behind a brand new Original Graphic Novel called Robot's Tale. It is based on the music of the band Dance Gavin Dance and being published by Z2 Comics.Ian is an artist who has worked on the Invader Zim movie and done work for Boom! Studios on the Adventure Time comics and Bee and PuppyCat. He also illustrated Poppy's Graphic Novel Genesis 1 which was also published by Z2.Eliot is writer of such comics as Hot Lunch Special and Midnight Vista from AfterShock comics. He has done a bunch of work with Valiant Comics and besides this Dance Gavin Dance book is currently working on Bleed Them Dry from Vault comics.We had a great conversation about this crazy story that they are creating. This time we were lucky enough to spend some time talking with comic writer Paul Storrie.Paul has written for DC, Marvel, IDW, Moonstone Books, Source Point Press, and others. He is well known for his original character Robyn of Sherwood. He will have two publications coming to comic shops in the next couple of months. First, on February 12th the long awaited collection of the Gotham Girls mini-series will be published by DC Comics as Harley Quinn and the Gotham Girls.
