Way back in 2012 my pet business was in a mess. The clients were happy, although I didn't have many The dogs I was walking were happy, but not very well behaved But Dom WASN'T happy The reason for this disatisfaction came from my lack of control of the dogs I was adventuring. It was chaos It wasn't safe And I knew things had to change, I just didn't know how... I had tons of ethusiasm and energy, but ZERO dog handling skills. I did some research and discovered a guy called John Rogerson, and as luck would have it, later that year he was running a 7-day dog behaviour course at Darlington Dogs Trust, just down the roads from me. So, I ponied up for the course my dad covered for me, and I went on the course that changed my life. Sadly, John passed away the day before New Years Eve. He'd just arrived in India to deliver a course, when he collapsed and nothing could be done. A great loss for the dog world, but the ripples of his genius will spread through the canine community through the many people he influenced. This weeks episode is a look back at what I learned from John, and the friends I discovered through that course. I'm also sharing what can happen when you push yourself out of your comfort zone, and put yourself in an enviroment where you AREN'T the smartest person in the room. Episode 272 brings you something a little different, as I've invited my old friend Jane Arden back onto the show. 2022 has been something of an Annus Horribilis for Jane as she's faced numerous challenges in her personal life.  At the start of the year, her partner Mike ended up in hospital with breathing problems which turned out to be a blood clot on his lung. Jane ended up doing everything which led to a total breakdown which necessitated a trip to A and E, and a complete three month break from the business. Later in the year she found a lump on her breast which resulted in exploratory surgery, and as we recorded this podcast she was still waiting for results. Something a little bit different today, because I am talking to the awesome James Eager from Ebassguitar.com James grew up with a passion for music, and at age 18 he went to Trinity College of music to hone his craft in bass guitar and double bass.  He worked in the orchestra pit on some of the top shows in the West End, he taught for a couple of days a week, AND played in a band.  By the time James hit his 30's the band started to take off, and were doing gigs all over the world, and very lucrative high-end weddings.  However, this turned out to be a feast or famine business which made James reasses things and seek a more stable career with recurring revenue.  That led to James going back to teaching, but this time online, where he got the marketing bug, put out his first lead magnet, built an email list, sold his first program and eventually this led to his hugely succesful online empire, E-Bass Guitar.  James story is very similar to my own, and it's a perfect template for what dog trainers can follow to take their business online and earn recurring revenue.  In this podcast you will discover; Why perfectionism is the enemy of progress when building an online business Why, when you are an entreprenuer it's better to be resilient than brilliant  Why you're first business, is often a stepping stone to a better  business  How a business coach can help you build a better business, faster than you would on your own  Also after the podcast was finished James told me his dad owned as pet food business in the 1970's!
