POLKcast: Being SLIC with Chris Fullerton and Jarrod Jones
In the last episode of POLKcast season 2, Winter Haven Library and Teaching Learning Computing Center Director Chris Fullerton and Librarian Jarrod Jones share one of the newest resources available to students — the Student Learning Innovation Centers (SLICs). The SLICs provide the technology, software, and assistance for students to create multimedia projects that will wow their peers and professors. The Winter Haven Campus Library SLIC is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students can visit the Library information desk with their Polk State IDs or make reservations online at polk.libcal.com/reserve/groupstudy. Walk-ins are welcome. However, the room accommodates up to six students. Therefore, reservations are recommended one week in advance. POLKcast: The Writing Studio and grammar jokes with Rebecka Ramos
In this episode of POLKcast, Professor Rebecka Ramos entertains some grammar jokes and shares about Polk State College’s The Writing Studio — a valuable tutoring resource for students to receive assistance from the College’s dedicated English faculty both online and in person. The Writing Studio sessions are open to all students, who are advised to bring their writing assignments and questions. Tutoring takes place at scheduled times on Canvas, in WSC 135 on the Winter Haven Campus, and in LLC 2101 on the Lakeland Campus. POLKcast: The importance of Polk State in Lake Wales with Andy Oguntola
In this episode of POLKcast, Polk State JD Alexander Center Director Andy Oguntola shares the critical importance of the Lake Wales Campus, which serves approximately 1,100 students each year — many who would not be able to access higher education outside of southeast Polk County. In 2018-2019, the Lake Wales Campus served a student population that was 53 percent ethnic minority, 66 percent female, transportation disadvantaged like 38 percent of Polk County residents, and financially in need, with 47 percent receiving need-based federal pell grants and 20 percent of female students between 18 and 24 living below poverty. At Polk State’s Lake Wales Campus, students have access to associate degrees and Bachelor of Science in Supervision and Management degree programs, dual enrollment, and onsite academic support including advisors, tutors, technology, and more. Since the Polk State JD Alexander Center opened, more than 500 students from southeast Polk County have earned their Polk State degrees, resulting in more than $12 million in additional annual income for these graduates and their families.
