THIS IS US — “I’ve Got This” Episode 510 — Pictured: Phylicia Rashad as Carol — (Photo by: NBC) Last episode, we saw various Pearson clans on their way home from the hospital. This week, we saw a variation on that theme with three groups of Pearsons having super mega-uncomfortable dinners. Even though this season has felt a little disjointed thanks to the COVID-related slowdown of production, it’s important to realize that this is episode 10. Normally, this would have been the first episode back from the winter break, thus ringing in new storylines to take us through to the season finale. That’s why this episode unleashed several can of worms into the Pearsons’ lives. OK, granted there was a lot of good reconciliation stuff between Kevin and Randall. AND I won’t overlook that the cast has grown by three more Pearsons. BUT – Did I want to know how Kevin made it “In The Room” in time for delivery? Yes. Do I care about the invention of data compression? Not as much as the show’s writers obviously thought I would, no. Don’t get me wrong – I didn’t hate the episode. As Caroline and I discuss in the podcast though, I wonder if we’re seeing examples of where COVID protocols have started to not only impact how stories are being told but the actual stories themselves. In a series of flashbacks, we learned all about Randall’s maternal grandparents, the well-to-do Dubois family. The struggles his mother, Laurel, had in finding a way to co-exist in a household where she never felt like she fit in, mirrored Randall’s own experience growing up in some ways. Then the lasting shame she felt about how she left William and Randall’s lives served as a powerful example for how Randall does NOT want to live his life… Just a super-powerful hour of TV! Combined with this podcast’s sparkling and witty commentary, it -should- leave you feeling warm and cozy enough to last until next week’s episode! The winter break is over and we have a solid run of 14 episodes coming up, kicking off with tonight’s “A Long Road Home”. As narrative structures go, TIU has gone complicated with time jumps and tricky intercutting in the past – but not tonight. Sure, there were a couple of flashbacks, but overall, we were served up straight-forward, dramatic storytelling that went for the gut with each of the Big 3’s storylines: Kate – settled years old business with perpetual record store assistant manager, Marc that put her on a path of low self-esteem, low self-confidence, overeating, trust issues… Kevin – has to decide if the big words he had for Madison at the beginning of her pregnancy will be something he can actually live up to… Randall – confronts the idea of an alternate reality in which his mother survived his birth – but would also make William a liar… Watch this one. Another week into the fifth season and Dan Fogelman and company treat us to a rather lightweight, but enjoyable episode. Does that mean they’re getting ready for a gut-punch next week? Time will tell, but if Kate’s bombshell from her past is any indication, we might be in store for a trip down a dark alley, where a piece of crap named Mark is waiting for us with pretentious musical recommendations and bad hair very soon. In the podcast, we discuss if this painful and clamped down chapter from Kate’s history might unlock many problems she’s carried into her adult life. With Kevin, we discuss how wonderful it is that he learned perseverance in his professional life – but wonder why Madison wasn’t seen AT ALL or merit any part of the conversation this episode. And Randall – well, Randall doesn’t usually get to be the comic relief and this week provided and change of pace plus a deeper look at Malik. THIS IS US — “Strangers: Part Two” Episode 418 — Pictured: (l-r) Justin Hartley as Kevin, Sterling K. Brown as Randall — (Photo by: Ron Batzdorff/NBC) This week’s episode, This Is Us Season 4 Episode 18, entitled “Strangers, Part 2,” gave us the knock-down drag-out between Randall and Kevin we’ve been waiting to see since the mid-season finale. Last week’s big question of, How will the Big 3 find out got answered as soon as Kevin’s brain locked in the very un-Rebecca-like phrase ‘investment in my future” spilled out of her mouth. Then it was off to the races with Kevin having to deal with a deceptive and smug brother on one side and the news of his impending fatherhood on the other. Sure, other stuff happened, but this is what we tuned in to see. So, now that the only proof of the brothers making up comes in the form of Rebecca’s death-scene about 10 years from now in the show’s timeline, we have to wonder. Is that the first time they see each other or will they make up before the scene in Kevin’s future-house? Caroline and Paul dig into that and other questions, like: The build-up to this fight has lasted half this season. But was the fight -really- as nuclear as you thought it was going to be? If you’ve listened to this podcast before, then you know that our own twins spent a looooong time in the NICU. So, we ask each other, Did Toby and Kate’s return to the NICU and its wall of fame resonate with you? THIS IS US — “After the Fire” Episode 417 — Pictured: (l-r) Ron Cephas Jones as William, Niles Fitch as Randall, Milo Ventimiglia as Jack — (Photo by: Ron Batzdorff/NBC) This week’s episode, This Is Us Season 4 Episode 17, entitled “After The Fire” should have been called “What Randall Did”. Last night, we saw Randall describe two “What-Ifs” to his new therapist, both assuming Jack had lived after the fire which claimed his life in reality. In one, Mary Sue… er, I mean Randall, lives his best life, magnanimously forgives Rebecca for lying about William, and catches his stomach cancer early (plus other pro-Randall achievements). In the other “Bizarro” version, he assumes the both he and Jack could not forgive Rebecca for lying about William. Randall becomes estranged from his siblings and mother, is rejected by William, and lives an empty life as a philandering academic. After this highly productive session, a suddenly clear-headed Randall decides it’s high time to call Rebecca as a “good son” and emotionally strongarm her into agreeing to his plans. So… Now we know what will cause the right. The last real question is, How will the rest of the Big 3 find out? Caroline and Paul discuss that and several possible scenarios for the last episode of the season, as well as: First off, How dare he? In his Bizarro version, Randall depicted his siblings as probably much happier people than he did in his ideal scenario. What’s up with that? Brown as Randall — (Photo by: Will Hart/NBC) This week’s episode, This Is Us – Season 4 Episode 16, entitled, “New York, New York, New York” featured three parallel New York City-centered storylines. Well, really three and a half, but who’s counting? Anyway, We’ve been talking about the Big 3 and the impending rift since mid-season. This episode brings what the rift probably involves into sharper focus. Nothing is set in stone yet, but it looks the future of Rebecca’s care and the Pearson boys’ differing opinion of it will be at the rift’s core. What will cause the break? Although we consider this one of our best TIU podcasts in a while, we were still left with a few lingering questions, like: Kate barely made an appearance in this episode. Where will she stand? With Kevin or Randall? We know she ends up with Kevin in the cabin later on (from the mid-season flash-forward), but will she start out on Kevin’s side? Rebecca has a husband. Why wasn’t Miguel even invited to the clinical trial discussion? We’re all going to grow old and possibly go through this same kind of thing. What would we choose? The trial? With every passing week in which the show dances around the issue, the biggest question of the week continues to be: What will cause the giant rift among the siblings? Caroline and Paul found this episode super enjoyable, but many questions rose up post-show, such as: Should Kevin and Madison give it a shot? I know this was also one of last week’s questions, but it’s still very relevant. Is Toby’s change of heart for real? We want to believe in him, but what he-said, Kate can’t un-hear. And finally, we get a short peek at the far-future timeline, bringing the time capsule story full-circle. This podcast is a little shorter than usual, but we still tackle ALL timelines. Plus, we throw in our experience as the parents of a blind preemie to weigh against the realism of Kate and Toby’s story. Other questions we tackle include: Are we done with Marc? Last episode, during the 3-way phone call with Kevin and Randall, Kate told us her marriage was imploding and this week we got a deeper look into what made her say that. Can Toby and Kate pull it together? As usual, we cover all timelines presented in the episode, injecting our own personal experiences as parents of a blind child (deafblind, actually) into our analysis. Questions we tackle include: Marc had always been a little creepy, and many fans have predicted a forthcoming sexual assault on his part, but did anyone guess that he was actually psychotic? (That’s 2:17 am for those playing along at home). In that episode-ending phone call with Randall, Kevin told us he’d also had a rough week. So, the big question has been, What’s gone wrong in Kevin’s world? In this podcast, we discuss all three major timelines represented in this episode. In just over an hour, Caroline and Paul tie all of those stories back to what we believe the entire point of this episode was: Kevin finally taking Sophie out his “will they / won’t they” category forever. But can he leave Sophie to her new life with Grant and stay out of it? Other questions we had include: Rebecca finally noticed that Marc is a creep. What happened that made it obvious to her? The internet cried out when they saw Madison sharing a bed with Kevin. Paul wonders, Why -couldn’t- they work as a couple?
