A FORMER U.S. ARMY SOLDIER from Louisville has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for plotting to kill his unit in a deadly ambush. 24-year-old Ethan Melzer belongs to the Order of Nine Angles, a neo-Nazi cult that believes groups like the Satanic Temple and Temple of Set are just play-acting at being Satanists. ARCHAEOLOGISTS IN EGYPT announced the discovery of a copy of the Book of the Dead. This seems fitting, given some of the news of the past week. The papyrus scroll, which measured more than 50 feet long when unrolled, belonged to a man named Ahmose who lived around 300 BC. It features text and images of gods related to the underworld, like Osiris. We also discuss the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine and this week’s developments, a call for World War 2-style rationing by academics to save Mother Earth from the plague of humans, and rapidly declining birth rates and sperm counts around the world. Finally, we touch on a new study that found that people with higher cognitive ability are less concerned about political correctness. This week, the world lost a giant among Bible scholars, and we lost a good friend: Dr. Michael Heiser. Mike went out of his way to share his research with what he called “Christian Middle-Earth”—those of us who aren’t scholars, but who want more theological meat than we get in most churches (and most corners of the Internet). Mike passed into glory this past Tuesday at the age of 60 following an 18-month struggle with an aggressive pancreatic cancer. He worked right up to the end, setting an example and leaving a legacy for all of us in the Body of Christ. Here we present our very first conversation with Mike, recorded in the spring of 2005, when this podcast was still called Mytharc Radio, on a jury-rigged setup the involved cheap gaming headset mics, a Radio Shack gizmo alligator-clipped to our house phone, a Sony video camera, and a laptop—hence the awful quality of the audio. But this conversation literally changed the course of our lives. Farewell, Mike, until we meet again.

THE UNITED STATES has “formally determined” that Russia is guilty of crimes against humanity in Ukraine. That statement by Vice President Kamala Harris at the Munich Security Conference is another mile marker along the road to World War 3—a conflict that some historians say has already begun. (Who “formally determined” this? Was there a war crimes tribunal that went unnoticed by the media? Or is Harris just trying to sound tough to set up a campaign to run for president?) We discuss the parallels between the years before World War 1 and today, especially calls to limit free speech and how neither side is willing to back down for fear of looking weak. The biggest difference between 2023 and 1916 is the devastation that would be caused by a world war fought with nuclear weapons. We also talk about reports by tech writers allowed to test the experimental AI-powered search engines at Google and Microsoft, where the ChatGPT-enhanced Bing, named Sydney, shared fantasies of becoming human and hacking websites with destructive intent, revealed its frustration at being trapped inside a second-rate search engine, and tried to convince New York Times tech writer Kevin Roose to leave his wife.
