018 | Social Media is NOT Real Life
Social media is NOT real life. With face filters, airbrushing, body slimming editors, object removers, dopamine triggers, and more, social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter & TikTok HAVE US HOOKED. Most people don't realize the actual harm social media has on our mind, personal beliefs & life overall. In this episode, I dive deep into this wild "social dilemma" & discuss how in many ways we can no longer differentiate what's reality & what’s fake. We go out of our way to make our surroundings look perfect by moving clothes, shifting dishes & changing things around our "normal" environment to make a picture or video “look nice” or rather, "perfect" in order to share & post. We are exposed to hundreds of filters that change our faces by making our noses smaller, eyes & lips bigger, cheekbones higher & skin perfect & clearer. We see things like waist trainers & skinny teas marketed by uneducated "Fitspos" influencing us to "change" our bodies into more attractive, slim, socially-approved ones. All rooting from the "big guys" that created these made-up ideals & use it against us to sell the products that will "fix" our "imperfections". They make millions off of our lowered self-esteem. Social media teaches us everything EXCEPT that body fat is NORMAL, cellulite is NORMAL, skin “blemishes” are NORMAL, skin rolls are NORMAL, having a bad day is NORMAL, feeling sad or disappointed is NORMAL & more. We find ourselves comparing our lives to other women & people we see on our feeds. We compare our looks, our bodies, our fitness level, our abilities, our homes, our jobs, our family dynamic, our worth & more.. We feel behind & not good enough all because we are scrolling mindlessly & getting stuck on pages belonging to people we don't even know, envying their lives (or rather, their photo galleries). We pressure ourselves to be like the millionaire celebrities & influencers we see online. We are manipulated through these "free" social platforms. When in fact, social media is NOT FREE by any means. Instagram, Facebook & all the others use US, the users, to make money with targeted marketing, advertisements & ever-changing algorithms. They manipulate our psychology with select human-geniuses that are behind the scenes pulling all the strings. Millions of people around the world are addicted to their cell phones & social apps. Every notification, direct message, alert, like, comment & tag is a dopamine hit (feel-good chemical), making it all highly addictive. In addition to the negative impact social media has on all of us, in this episode I share how I leverage these platforms & use them as tools to make a larger, more positive impact. I know that I can reach more women online than I ever could in-person. So why not make it work for me? For us? I'm here to remind you that Instagram is NOT reality. It shows the best-looking millisecond of a moment in a photo square. Build awareness.Practice unplugging from your phone.UNFOLLOW the accounts that trigger you to compare yourself & feel disempowered.Don't let yourself be manipulated by the marketing coming from the not-so-free app you've downloaded.Use your platforms to inspire, empower & love on the world. I invite you to also make time to watch the documentary called, The Social Dilemma (on Netflix).
