Sri Muppidi chats with Marc Tarpenning about his career path and how he founded Tesla. 

Gen. H.R. McMaster. served as the 26th National Security Advisor under the Trump administration. H.R. was a commissioned officer in the army for 34 years before he retired as a Lieutenant General in 2018. He wrote the award-winning book, Dereliction of Duty about the Vietnam War, and he’s currently working on another book as a fellow at the Hoover Institute.

Jill Butler is a public school teacher and administrator. In the past two decades, Ms. Butler served a teacher at Pleasanton Middle School and then later transitioned into serving as the principal of the school. 

Pejman Nozad is the founding managing partner at Pear Ventures, an early stage venture fund. Starting his career as a rug salesman, Pejman has taken on the venture scene and has invested in successful startups like Dropbox, Lending Club, DoorDash, and Gusto. Before he immigrated to the States, Pejamn was a budding soccer player and sports journalist in Iran.  

Zahra Billoo is a civil rights lawyer and serves as the executive director of the Bay Area chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR). CAIR is a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. In 2017, Zahra spoke at the Women’s March on Washington and sued Donald Trump to challenge his Muslim ban executive orders. Through her work at CAIR, Zahra facilitates training and workshops at a grassroots level and provides direct legal services for victims of law enforcement targeting and Islamophobia. 

R.B. Brenner is a renowned journalist and editor. He served in important editing positions at the Washington Post, including Sunday Editor and Metro Editor. He was also one of the primary editors of the Washington Post’s coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings, which was awarded a Pulitzer in 2008. RB also has dabbled in Hollywood, serving as a consultant for two journalism-themed movies, The Post and State of Play. Currently, R.B. is a lecturer at the Communications Department at Stanford.

Marc Tarpenning has had an illustrious career in the startup world. Building computers at age 14, Marc later went to launch NuvoMedia, developing an early handheld electronic book reader. Later on, Marc co-founded Tesla, serving as CFO and VP of Electrical Engineering. Since his time at Tesla, Marc went on to advise startups and has gotten more involved in local politics.
