Show Notes Sean McCormick and Zack Bloom, Founders of Covalent Media Group. Acquired by Subdirect Digital Media Group in February 2019. Client relationship grew over several years while working on the lead gen side. There was a strategic fit that made sense for long-term growth. Being acquired frees up time to move away from the day-to-day startup hustle and focus on new growth opportunities. The acquisition process started in August 2018 and ended in February 2019 and from offer letter to closing, approximately four and a half months. Listen more than you talk. Don’t let your ego get involved! Have a good accountant and bookkeeper. Stay on top of your finances! Surround yourself with mentors and advisors that have your best interest at heart. Be open, willing to listen to people and ask lots of questions. Known each other since 8th grade and went to the University of Rhode Island together. Covalent is the second company Sean and Zack have founded together. Surround yourself with knowledgeable advisors and someone to be the tie-breaker. It’s important to know your business partner and how they operate under pressure. Covalent was founded in Sean’s dining room. Spent early days hustling and taking half hour walks every day to discuss the business. Get out of the office with your business partner! Bought a call center in Texas and didn’t plan enough post-acquisition cash flow. Outsourcing development for lead gen portal to an offshore firm and nearly had to shut down their highest grossing revenue channel. Strong relationships and communication skills are the difference between success and failure. Pay Per Call has grown tremendously over the past 6 months and will be a focus for Covalent in the coming years. Having more cash flow allows you to explore new opportunities. Most people don’t do that. Accept that you don’t know everything, you’re not an expert, and you can always get better. Getting new clients but networking with and learning from other marketers. Remove dates from URLs and add sidebar links to pillar content. Look at high performing pages and optimize them for long-tail keyword terms. Lots of inbound leads from marketing efforts over the years. Everything is omni-channel. It’s not one thing that gets you the client, it’s 50. Workday usually starts around 5:00 AM and finishes around 10:00 PM. #1 Tip: Go for a walk to think about your day, what went well, what went wrong, how you can do better and what you will prioritize the next day. Start small! Pick 1 thing to add into your routine and build positive habits slowly. Meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight! Marketing is going to get harder and more competitive. An ‘Accredited Investor’ is a high-net worth individual who invests in startups with an understanding of the risk. SEC Definition: Someone who is sophisticated enough to invest in private companies. To be an accredited investors, individuals must demonstrate an annual income of $200,000, or $300,000 for joint income, for the last two years with expectation of earning the same or higher income. Since joining, TCA has funded 40-50 companies plus additional rounds. Typical financing ranges from $.5 million to $1.5 million per round. How the Funding Process works for Entrepreneurs at TCA: Online Application with Pitch deck, Executive summary, Business info, etc. Matched with a TCA member who is familiar with the industry to evaluate. Exploratory meeting, conference call or committee screening. Formal Presentation looking at the business / market opportunity. Due Diligence looking under the hood (30-day process). Investment is made and a deal is signed. Target your investors, know your audience and understand their thesis. Be prepared! Have your materials and documents ready and on-hand (cap table, financial projections, patents, etc). Don’t add time to your deal! Time kills deals. Be trustworthy. Investors don’t want to partner with someone they don’t trust. Have a clear and concise story about your business. Don’t make it hard for investors to help you! Be prepared and make it easy for them. As an entrepreneur, you want to be in a position to tell the best story possible. Good story starter lines include: users, revenue, and other funding efforts (FOMO). Adam: Angel investors look for companies they can help grow and lend their expertise to. Generating Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) and a history of growth is a good starting point for starting to find investors. Adam: Bring user acquisition metrics, how you got them, traffic sources, plan to scale, etc. Know your Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC) and Lifetime Value (LTV). Due Diligence: Technical Fundamentals, Trust and Relationship Building. Adam: Transparency is crucial. Admit when you don’t have an answer. Be open to questions and feedback during the due diligence process. VCs look at conversion rates, traffic, retention, cohorts, revenue, CAC, LTV. Corporate stuff like compensation, cap table, previous funding, financials, and strategy. Idiosyncratic variables, market variables and hard numbers help determine business valuation. For early-stage companies, investors often look at comparable companies. It’s not a success to raise money. Making money is how you get success. Adam: Ask for help and advice when you need it! The Finance vertical is long-term, high-value and has a lot potential customers. Financial services includes a wide range of products and customer types. Consumers pick up the phone when they need something done. This is especially true for financial products and services. Educate the consumer and provide unique products that fit their needs. Customize the service offering for the customer and consider their long-term value (ex. What products and services will they need 5 or 10 years from now?). Bridge the omni-channel gap with calls, emails, live chat, etc. Understand where the customer is at right now and how you can help them. Don’t be intimidated by competition -- be more creative! Find and recommend complimentary products for their unique situation. Be obsessive about segmentation and learning about your audience. Immerse yourself in the customer experience.
