355 - Girl Body Parts and a "Woker" Society?
From joey blowing up a woman's restroom while ladies are waiting to use, to a bunch of "girl body part talk," co-hosts Liz Miller, Amy Alderman, and Ellen Mauro have "homie time" with Joey; which means listen at your own risk.  Lots of "adult clowning," so get the earmuffs out for the kids. After getting through the sh*ts and giggles, Liz expresses love and grace towards people who "do not agree with her lifestyle," and Joey proposes that society is getting more woke.  co-hostsEllen Mauro / Instagram Liz Miller / Instagram Amy Alderman / Facebook Joey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter  Join Bear W/ Community (a community for PWNA patrons)Read About / JoinBear W// Community VideoRaffle and Welcome PacketRaffleWelcome PacketUpdates via Remind App (or text @Bearwit to 81010)Socials / Connect (open to all):PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupPodcast WebsiteYouTubeE-mail us  for correspondence.ThanksTheme song and all music, courtesy of Derek MinorAndrew Holder sound engineers, mixes, and helps with overall production.E-mail him here for all your podcast needs. Support the show

354 - A Gay Conversation: A Community Gathering of Affirming and Un-Affirming Christians
The Bear W/ Community holds "Big Gatherings" each month; some of them like this conversation, are open to the public.    What you are hearing on this episode is one of those meetings and the beginning of regular gatherings to discuss the potential of unity amongst affirming and un-affirming Christians.  With Liz Miller (Christian woman married to a woman) and Hunter Gregory (Christian man engaged to a man) as some of the main voices in this conversation, we all discuss whether it's possible to truly love a queer person without affirming his or her sexuality.  Lots of grace in this one, thrown in all directions.  If you have engaged evangelicalism, you keenly understand how people land on both sides of this one.  Matt Oxley, one of the co-hosts (queer himself, former evangelical) has empathy for those who do not affirm him.   He sees them as "victims" of a smear campaign that's been going on for the last hundred years.   How about this one?  Is it good or bad, that not one un-affirming person Joey approached to engage in this discussion, was willing to?  Hunter Gregory says "that's a bunch of malarky and hogwash." 353 - Pets, Farming, Killing Animals, Meat and Cowboys
Any difference in shooting a barking dog verses killing a gnat for buzzing in your ear? Pastor With No Answers Podcast partners with Tony Jones of The Reverend Hunter Podcast and Neil Dudley of Pederson Natural Farms, The Cowboy Perspective Podcast, and The Pederson Farms Podcast for an episode that will air on all three shows!Lots of "pet talk," (can you leave a dog in the kennel all day?  can you let your cat die instead of paying the vet $1000 to save her?) lots of animal and human life talk.  Tony loves hunting and Neil's farm kills 1500 pigs every week, yet both have yet to be desensitized by the loss of life for the little piggies turned bacon on Neil's farm, or for Bambi's mom that Tony's bullet met right before she fell to her death.  What's the "eye lash rule" of killing animals?  Has Walmart contributed to a societal flippancy towards buying and eating meat?   What does "humane treatment" of animals mean anyway, and why isn't Tony a fan of that terminology?  Is this something Christians should talk more about, consider more deeply?   As a Christian, what are some of Neil's convictions about the treatment of animals when running a farm?  Does he look after the animals' best interest in the process of "harvesting" them?  Would it be unchristian not to?Can there even be any moral implications for going around killing plants and animals, if God doesn't exist? And in that case, does this conversation even matter?Tony Jones  // The Reverend Hunter Podcast // Twitter Neil Dudley // Pederson Natural Farms // The Cowboy Perspective Podcast // The Pederson Farms Podcast   Joey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter / Facebook Bear W/ Community (a community for PWNA patrons)Read About / Join Bear W// Community VideoRaffle and Welcome Packet Raffle Welcome PacketUpdates via Remind App (or text @Bearwit to 81010) Socials / Connect (open to all):PWNA Discussion Facebook Group Podcast WebsiteYouTube Tik TokE-mail us  for correspondence.ThanksTheme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends.Andrew Holder sound engineers, mixes, and helps with overall production.E-mail him here for all your podcast needs. Support the show

352 - Did the Church Mean to Screw Us Up?
Were church leaders  reckless,  using little wisdom when standing up for and “teaching truth?”  Was it an accident so many of us were messed up in the process?   Co-hosts Ellen Mauro, Hayne Griffen, and Joey Svendsen mourn the lack of love and wisdom seen in church's approach to sexuality and youth,  it's reluctancy to even love those with other views, and it's impulse to beat the mess out of some one who is not "one of us" any more.   My journey is full of changes in how I see God, faith, the Church and spirituality in general.  I have also found church family amongst people who would be labeled "evangelical" by most.   That’s why as I mourn the hypocrisy in the "capital C church," I also cannot help but to  speak on behalf of people who i have often seen live with good intent, bringing forth a lot of goodness and hope into the world.  But it’s tiring to see the church act more like Judas than Jesus; and even more bothersome?  We’re being desensitized as we watch the church claim "Jesus as Lord," without following in His footsteps of love.  This is a false claim and is ruining the credibility of gospel and thus the church.  -- JoeyRobbie Madison “The Way that You Love” single / Spotify / Apple Music   Joey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter / Facebook Ellen Mauro / Instagram Bear W/ Community Read About / Join / Raffle / Welcome Packet Raffle Bear W// Community VideoCLICK HERE to receive updates on all the "Bear W/ Going On's" texted right to you from Remind.  Or text @bearwit to 81010.Socials / ConnectJoin our mailing list to keep up with everything. 351 - You Are Helping Destroy the World by Not Taking Jesus Seriously
Why can't Christians enjoy a "God's Kingdom first" approach to life?  Could our very democracy crumble,  due merely to people’s unwillingness to listen and learn about other peoples's views, convictions and beliefs?Rev. Brandan Robertson is family of this show, author, activist and public theologian.  Discussing his newest book, Filled to Be Emptied: The Path to Liberation for Privileged People, Brandan once again pulls no punches in his true desire to radically love all, taking Jesus seriously no matter what the cost.  Although Rev. Brandan considers himself on the "left" (or in the "progressive camp") and speaks often against the hypocrisy of much of the evangelical right, he feels his leftest "team" gains nothing--and is even  in err--when demonizing Trump voters.  Brandan challenges us all to "see the face of God" in everyone.  Why do we worship ideology?  Can we really call ourselves followers of Christ if we do not empty ourselves and give up privileges like he did (Philippians 2)?  This passage, Brandan supposes, addresses the sacrificial responsibilities a privileged follower of Christ is called to have.  Hard point to argue against.   Read the verse for yourself.   Is anger good, while bitterness is not?  Why are some evangelicals leaving evangelicalism while others stay, in support of a leader who goes against many of the very morals  evangelicals have historically never budged on? 350 - Communism or Capitalism, Which Represents [true] Heart of the Gospel?
Co-hosts Joey Svendsen and Matt Oxley hang with regular contributor Jack Hoey (the father) to discuss whether capitalism or communism is ideal in regards to morals, greed, and a more "Jesus Way" of running things.  Everyone on the show agrees on capitalism's shortcomings (and even evil of), but the disagreement at hand, is whether communism is any better.   There are admirable motivations for both "sides" to promote their version of "ideal government," the various perspectives here represent a different weighting system of different values. Did Jesus speak against capitalism?  Does communism lend itself to more evil, given the more control allotted to less people, and the question remains: has it ever worked in the past?  History has spoken clearly though, no manmade system can fix human greed, undo the propensity to take advantage of others,  nor stop the violence motivated often for financial gain.  Co-HostsMatt Oxley / Web  / TwitterJoey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter / FacebookBear W/ Community Read About / Join / Raffle / Welcome PacketBear W// Community VideoSocials / Connect  Join our mailing list to keep up with everything.Join the PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupWe are on YouTube and Tik Tok.PWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.ThanksTheme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends. 349 - How Evangelicals Greatly Misunderstand "Deconstructed" Christians
Katie Hays is an author, church planter, pastor, educated at MIT, Yale and Princeton: and she taught us a new word: "Fundagelical."  That's what her and I (Joey) were, before going through the scary process of faith change.  With her new book ("God Gets Everything God Wants") as the context, we discuss a variety of topics:-How we were once both convinced of our narrow view of faith being the only right one.-Accepting the bible has multiple "takes" on a particular subject and inerrancy falls a part.-How evangelicals' "gospel news" may be incomplete- Blame the "capital C church" needs to accept-The "slippery slope" of deconstruction that led to our freedom-The humility required for deconstruction.-Rarely does  one set out to deconstruct her faith. -What the church has learned from the LGBTQ community -The relentless faith and devoutness of a "deconstructed Christian."-The pain of loved ones' misunderstandings of your deconstruction  - When Joey's mom was with child (with Joey), prophesies were made about Joey by a spirit-filled prayer group of Catholic women  On a "fun scale" of 1-10, this conversation was a 10 for me.   -- Joey Kate Hays  Website / Book / Twitter / ChurchSupport the Show / Bear W/ Community The Raffle Venmo  - each dollar you send  counts as one raffle ticketJoin the Bear W/ Community for a month, each dollar for your tier counts as one raffle ticket.Bear W// Community VideoReceive "Welcome Packet" via REMIND app (you sign up. Continuing a conversation that was started on this podcast 2 years ago, part six of a series that has taken a behind the scenes look at Joey’s journey through a mental health crisis in 2019.  Joining today are four of Joey’s closest friends, Tim McAdams, Sarah Eller. And Amy Alderman, Robbie Madison, both also co-hosts of the show.   The three reflect on his transparency leading up to this crisis and the effects it had on their processing of the situation at hand, back in 2019.  They discuss whether they dealt with fear around the potential of Joey losing his life; and how they processed knowing that the friend of theirs, who was battling for his life, was also pastor of the church that all four  considered their family.  A true story of friendship, the power of family and the need for connection.  Sarah Eller, Tim McAdams, Amy Alderman and Robbie Madison, special thanks for your love, grace and commitment to your boy.  Bear W/ Community – investigate and/or joinWelcome Packet - we'd love to send you!Click here to download our community calendar.to enter the "The Raffle" Other past episodes in this series:My Depressive Episode: Why Talk About Our HellMy Depressive Episode 2: “To See a Son Suffer”My Depressive Episode 3 (w/ Chip Judd): Anxiety and How it All BeganMy Depressive Episode 4: Our Pastors Walked With Us & the Mental InstitutionMy Depressive Episode 5: The BadChristian Divorce Connect in other ways: Sign up for our mailing list to keep up with everything. 346 - After Their Son Drowned, These Parents Say "God is Good."
Adarius Gerard Jenkins 12/10/00 - 06/09/13Son of Kip and Leenetta Smalls, brother of Kazadia SmallsHonoring all who are mourning the loss of a loved one, during this Mother's Day 2022.  Sunday morning of June 9th 2013 started just like any other day, but by the time the sun set, a metaphorical darkness had settled in the hearts of Leenetta and Kip Smalls, as their minds were forced to grapple with the prospect of their precious 12-year-old Darius not coming back home to them on this side of heaven. This is the story of the human experience.  Not one person is in the clear from pain like this, it's always potentially right around the corner.  Life gives the potential for the highest highs and unbearable lows.  What stands out in this story is the abundant, God-given peace that was  received by these suffering parents, peace that guided them through the unbearable pain they weren't sure they could survive. This is also a  "2 Corinthians 1 story," one in which Paul says "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.......And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort."  Just one year after their loss, Kip and Leenetta were afforded the opportunity to pass along the supernatural comfort they had received to those in similar shoes.   May this story of peace amidst such agony, be an encouragement to us all.  If life turns for us in a way that brings to our hearts insurmountable pain, may we have faith in a hope that  God's love for us will prevail, even if we have no eyes to see how God will do it.  Join usas a Patron and automatically be a member of the Bear W/ Community. Co-hosts Robbie Madison and Matt Oxley, join host Joey Svendsen with the original purpose of continuing a conversation from episode 340, “Courage Not to Cancel the Racist,"  asking the question, "what about the statues of racists?"We accomplished this while at the same time, Joey believes the Holy Spirit moved in real time, opening his eyes to a facet of his white privilege that was sobering to see. Robbie was in an English town where actors still practice "black face" and Joey shares how he doesn't want to have the label of "woke," nor does he want to be seen as "not woke." 344 - The Cross of Jesus Christ (Brian Zahnd)
[with special appearances from Pete Enns, John Mark McMillan, Brandan Robertson, Jared Svendsen and Hayne Griffen] The original intent of the episode was to get deep into the theology of the Cross of Jesus, and Brian Zahnd covered us [profoundly]  in that department.  We discuss with Brian how the church explains too much the “death and resurrection of Jesus,” stripping it from its beauty and power.  Also how the western world, despite the profound baggage it’s delivered, also gets credit for the “Christ infused convictions” it's delivered to the world; and according to Brian, has greatly changed for the better, how we see dignity and worth in all of humanity.  What if God exists but Jesus never came and died?  What kind of shit storm would we be in then?  We talk Jesus’ non-violent approach to life and whether it applies to national governments.  Penal substitution is what the Western church world is stuck on and according to Brian Zahnd, it’s an abhorrent theological approach to the Cross.    With a Pastor praying at the end, an interview that might as well have been the best Easter sermon ever, and testimonies galore from some of your “church fam,” this is your Easter service, "PWNA style" of course.   Brian ZahndWebsite / twitter / Instagram Special Guests Pete Enns / website / twitter Brandan Robertson / website / Instagram John Mark McMillan /  website / Instagram Join us as a Patron. 343 - PWNA [Ladies Edition]: A Bisexual, Problem Drinker and Ass Kicker
Welcome to a new (and permanent) angle of Pastor With No Answers Podcast.   Ellen Mauro, Amy Alderman and Liz Miller, all mothers and wives,  one hates her job as a stay at home mom, each medicated for anxiety and really bad OCD.   One seems to be pro-violence,  one swings both ways, each  of them think critically enough not to cancel everyone who makes a mistake, and all three want to follow Jesus as best as she can.  We discuss Liz’s journey of being widowed for 10 years and recently getting married this past January.  Liz processes with us evangelicals' perspective of her as a “broken woman" due to her gay marriage.  We discuss the irony that religious organizations -- full of promiscuity, sexual scandal, and pedophilia themselves-- are the ones shouting the loudest about sexual sin.   As a PART II of this episode, Pricilla Svendsen joins Amy, Ellen and Joey to discuss different facets of "the Chris Rock getting popped by the Fresh Prince" craziness.  As this discussion unfolds, it’s discovered that Amy and Ellen are going to drive one another crazy for years to come.  Awesome!  For starters, Amy supports corporal punishment for kids while Ellen is dumbfounded why southerners don’t call this abuse.    "Violence is wrong" -- Ellen "Chris Rock deserved to get his ass kicked worse." -- AmyYou get the picture, right?   Co-hostsLiz Miller / Instagram / Memoirs Amy Alderman / Facebook Ellen Mauro / Instagram Pricilla Svendsen / InstagramJoin us as a Patron. 342 - Deconstruction? Or Just Plan Old Faith Change (w/ Derek Minor)
Derek and I have hung out online doing podcast episodes  for the last 7 years or so and we've talked very little about Christian faith.  In this episode, that's the focus; Derek's faith  - JoeyDeconstruction is the buzz word.  Those who "deconstruct" typically demolished "static pillars" of fundamentalism and over time, new ones go up.  There exists different beliefs, but same old regimented, manmade approach to spirituality. People who sense a faith change coming on may have been living in a mindset in which certain beliefs need to be true in order for God to be real. This paves the way to an arduous road that can end in so many places. What does Derek struggle with?  Seeing the church with nuance. What does he artistically regret?  His ego in earlier work.  We learn about "Calvinist Rap" that Derek took part in for a spell, we toil with the thought of "good samaritan type people," who live a life of love and service (all the things Jesus said were most important) to all, but do not have "correct" beliefs.   How in the living hell do people (i.e. John Piper) know so much about infinite God?  What's it look like to be a Christian in 2022?  All of this and more with fam of the podcast.  We talk J-Cole, and at the beginning of episode, Matt and Robbie help Joey process his "did I steal from Wal-Mart" situation.  Derek MinorAll music on this episode from Derek's new album. 341 - My Gay Church Days: Memoir of a Closeted Evangelical Pastor Who Eventually had Enough.
[At top of episode, Ellen, Ryan and Joey discuss Ryan's ignoring of God, why it's a bit morbid when a Christian asks "was he/she a believer" after some one dies, and how the church is trying to convince Ellen's friend to stay with her cheating husband because he "reads the word" and "it was only a blowjob."] For our main talk, biographical author, George Azar, lived it and wrote a book for us to peer into his journey from leading vocational ministry as a pastor (and as a gay man) to “eventually having enough" and leaving Christianity all together.  He shares his story here.   Joey and George discuss the senselessness of appealing to “traditional theology” as a standard not to evolve past for the reason of "God ever changes."  This ideology seems to assume that God hasn’t anything further to say about the teachings in the bible and no more revelatory direction for humanity.  Pretty boring God, if you ask me.   Joey shares how hard it was to maintain his un-affirming views of homosexuality when close friends of his shed light on her/his relationship with the Holy Spirit, the journey of diligent searching for the truth of God’s view on sexuality, and the current peace they have found in pursuing gay companionship.  George and Jack reflect on the prospect of him being an adult gay man in the very much less accepting world we lived in, just 20 years ago.  Joey takes the opportunity to get a “Billy Graham Rule” critique from a gay man, the two discuss the dynamics of gay Christians fellowshipping with non-affirming ones, and Joey asks if the word “homosexual” is even appropriate terminology anymore.  George Azar and My Gay Church Days / Website / Amazon / InstagramHost Ellen Mauro / Instagram Join us as a Patron.Sign up for our mailing list to keep up with everything.Joey/PWNA Instagram and Twitter Join the PWNA Discussion Facebook Group We are on YouTube.  PWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.Theme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends  Production and Editing:  Jared SvendsenWe use Riverside Podcast Platform for recording and it kicks Zoom's ass (no offense, zoom).  Try it by clicking the link. Support the show

340 - Courage to Not Cancel the Racist
Dr. Latimore, author of “Unshakable Faith of Famous and Little Known African Americans from Colonial Times to the Present"  joins co-hosts Robbie Madison and Joey Svendsen to discuss the important outlooks and insights his book delivers on. In our diverse communities, churches, organizations and political spaces, [Black] history offers a window into the meaning of America  and the opportunity to reflect and marvel at, the strength of a people who refused to be destroyed and who fought and loved their way into our nation’s story.  In this conversation, an unexpected theme is processed in real time and confirmed by Robbie and Dr. Latimore.  As African American men who value their blackness and maintain passion for  equality and social justice for all people,  the concept of blindly "cancelling a racist" for them seems lazy, rudimentary, and contrary to the Spirit of love represented by Jesus' words "Father, forgive,  for they know not.."  This new "cancelling trend" in our culture basically eliminates the chances of some thing Jesus seemed pretty adamant about all of us having: new beginnings and second chances, birthed by Grace.  The book also highlights a deeper, even heart-wrenching path of grace that many have painfully walked through.    Sometimes the unfairness of life (as it was for many of the saints discussed in his book) makes it is hard to keep going with soundness of mind, hope, and contentment in our hearts.  Dr. Latimore shares the stories of African Americans who found all three, even in the midst of grave injustices that personally destroyed the hopes of having what many of the more privileged were able to take for granted as "simple rights" and receiving "our due."  May our hearts be changed forever by the stories of our fellowmen and women who persevered while truly walking in the footsteps of Jesus.   A lesson for all mankind, especially in 2022.  Carey Latimore / Info / Facebook / Book Robbie Madison / Web / Instagram / Music Join us as a Patron. 339 - The Rise of Mars Hill Church: Was it Worth It? (w/ Matt Johnson)
Matt Johnson used to live in Mark Driscoll’s basement as “one of the interns” (inside joke you’ll find out later) and eventually became an integral part of Mars Hill Church's operations and ministries, as a pastor.  On this episode, Matt and Joey reflect on Christianity Today’s The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill Podcast, including guesswork on Driscoll’s heart, ("that only God can judge") mental state and marriage.   Reflecting on the story of Mars Hill, Matt is left with a faith unshaken but a complete distrust of the competitive-driven, consumer-minded, charismatically-led model of church-planting and that model of church in general.     We discuss here the power of charisma, “spiritual narcissism,” and whether things are different at  Driscoll’s new church in Phoenix.  There’s also some “Driscoll Myths” debunked, including Mark’s “they’re out to get me” narrative of the "divorce."   We also ask Matt if he was personally intimidated by Mark and whether he currently has empathy for him.   At the beginning of the episode, Ellen shares with Joey and Ryan Amick, her problem with alcohol.17 Years At Mars Hill on Mockingbird.Getting Jesus Wrong by Matt Johnson Getting Jesus Wrong (Matt Johnson) Episode 202   Join us as a Patron! What a roller coaster ride, “riding through” purity culture as a guy.  I can’t imagine the beautiful world of being a teen and accepting (even embracing) sexuality (and all the feelings) as a gift to be celebrated; instead we were taught shame and guilt about one of the most natural and beautiful gifts there are.  – Joey (host) Purity culture affected the guys here in various ways.  Lots of “sexually impaired marriages” and one even attributes the beginning of his drug addiction to the horrors of purity culture.  And yes, we talk about real “horrors” available for every guy entering into the unforgiving (literally) world of purity culture.  Parents, listen here to the perspective of Hayne’s parents who encouraged healthy ways of sexual release (i.e. masturbulatory occasions) once he hit the age of fourteen.   As far as sex in general, theologically have Christians added rules to sexuality, that never existed in the bible?  Lots of questions here, but the truth be told,  if evangelical purity culture’s standards are indeed correct, the mismatch between human anatomy and a goal for absolute purity, is truly overwhelming.   And it has been for all generations.   Thanks, Matt, Jed Pene, and Hayne for their time given and for their transparency about embarrassing stuff.Joey/PWNA Instagram and Twitter Join us as a Patron! 337 - Spirit of God Hovering Over the Waters in a Formless, Empty Earth
What if in the "Genesis 1 beginning," things had already began?  What if the infamous, "In the Beginning" beginning, happens to be about  one small area, guarded by an angel (Garden of Eden).  S. Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD,  author of The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry, challenges widely-held presuppositions held about the Genesis creation story and has put his tenure on the line for being forthright with the role that his faith plays in how he sees the world.  In this episode he talks how a plain reading of Genesis  can still be supported by science.  Oh yeah, and he believes in evolution.  But according to Dr. Swamidass, humans still lack amazement for the good stuff.  How are we not more fascinated by existence in general?  Or the existence of consciousness?  He demonstrates well the ability to maintain what most of his atheist colleagues would call "good science" while still being a self-proclaimed, "Christian first, scientist second" person.  And while he's here, we also manage to talk conspiracies, AI, Mars exploration and how it's hard to get ethics out of science, especially in regards to abortion.  At top of episode, Jack Hoey and Ellen Mauro defend some very cynical comments they made on a previous episode about speaking in tongues.  Chip Judd challenges their views on a means of prayer he practices every day and claims to be why he is the man he is today.  Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD // Twitter  Ellen Mauro Instagram Chip Judd Instagram // WebsiteJack Hoey Instagram //  TwitterJoey/PWNA Instagram and TwitterJoin us as a Patron!Join our mailing list to keep up with everything.Tip any amount $ to Venmo for a PWNA Sticker.Join the PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupPWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.Theme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by  Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends.  Executive Producer of PWNApod:  Jared Svendsen Support the show
