Episode 44: Dealing with rejection and succeeding with William Du of Short Story
Short Story co-founder William Du subscribes to the adage that “if fear is the only thing stopping you, then you should do it.” It echoes Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words, “What we fear of doing most is usually what we most need to do.” They have a nice ring to it, but others will still steer clear of challenges. Not William though.   William has packed a lot of courage and guts to bring with him in his exciting roller-coaster entrepreneurial ride, which he shares with business and life partner, Carolyn Wong. They had a brief taste of the business world during their stint at the 30-year-old restaurant owned by Carolyn’s dad. However, everything was not reduced into ashes because the experience became a prelude to having a venture of their own.   Highlights: How Short Story began Realising after 3-4 years that they needed to stop messing around and put all the effort in to the business How they kept Short Story afloat with self funding and part time jobs Differences between the first and second year to now Different ways Short Story has marketed, and that they have only just embraced social media in the last year How a book changed William’s life Listening to motivational videos and being persistent as successful habits   Resources: https://www.shortstory.com.au/ https://twitter.com/ShortStoryHome/ https://www.instagram.com/shortstoryhome/   Quotes: “We didn’t take things seriously until the 4th or 5th year and that’s when we realised we really have something here! Let’s put all of our time into this, let’s quit mucking around and get serious!” – William Du “Continual learning and self development is so important. Just growing our mind-set to having a very open mind-set and not closing it off. We focus on ourselves, because we are the ones taking the business forward.” – William Du “My favourite piece of advice is actual from Winston Churchill and it’s so simple: Never, never, never give up! … You have just got to keep pushing no matter what.” – William Du

Quotes from today’s episode: "It's not B to B, or B to C, or B to B to C. It is H to H or human to human. Doesn't matter what job you're in." -- Phil Ore "We try to make sure we're working with people we can help, but also appreciate what we're doing." -- Phil Ore “It's not about keeping our secret herbs and spices to ourselves. We're very much focused on teach‌ing our clients how to do it." -- Phil Ore
