Stories From The Edge of The Wine Glass, Part 1: Wasted
Wasted. Dude, you're so wasted! Wasting time. Wasted days and wasted nights. In this first part of a four-part series, we listen to stories centered around a common theme: Wasted. I am joined by storytellers Stuart Jacobson and Miyo Yamauchi, as well as a visit by my brother Dave to discuss all things associated with that altered state of mind and feared (or embraced?) state of life. Spilling off the edge of the wine glass this week is the 2016 Altocedro Gran Riserva "La Consulta" Malbec, an insanely good Malbec from our friends at The Wine Spies that's on a limited offer at 40% off.

Pairs With Clay Shannon Cabernet and My Super Weird Neighbor
Everybody's got one: the super weird neighbor who says super weird stuff and does super weird things. My fossilized-dog loving, babyless baby carriage-strolling neighbor is mine. Fortunately, there's the 2017 Clay Shannon Cabernet from the folks at Wine Spies to make life a little better. I also have a few big announcements to share, and a Soapbox to get on, and an awesome new website to talk about!

Pairs With Pommard Bourgogne and Anxiety, Part 2
In the final part of my 2-part series, I continue examining my personal journey with anxiety: medications, therapy, lifestyle changes, more medications, self-medications, all leading to some major revelations. Of course, Wine Therapy is always key to the successful alleviation of anxiety, and this week it's the 2017 Pommard Bourgogne that does the trick. Perhaps even better than wine is the amazing insights of Dr. Ronaye Calvert, a psychologist at Live Treatment VIP in Los Angeles, who helped those aforementioned revelations come to pass.

Pairs with Beekeeper Zinfandel and Anxiety, Part 1
As one of the mellowest, live-and-let-live kind of guys on the planet, I never thought anxiety would ever be a part of my life. Turns out, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults or 18.1% of the population every year. In this two-part series, I open up and share my personal story about anxiety, and how I finally came to accept it and treat it. I also talk with Dr. Ronaye Calvert about the healthy way to look at anxiety (as opposed to the way I was looking at it). Of course, wine is the first defense against anxiety (in my house, anyway), so I crack open another bottle of the incredible 2015 Beekeeper Zinfandel from the Montecillo Vineyard in Sonoma. At only $30 from Winespies, it's a lot cheaper than therapy.

Pairs With Girl Scout Cookies & Wine
It's Girl Scout Cookie Time! This year is a little different, as my 9-year-old Girl Scout veteran can attest to. All cookie sales are online, as COVID has literally shut the door on person-to-person sales. But why not make the most of it and combine the best of two worlds: online cookie delivery and quarantine over-drinking? So, for this week's episode, I match up the best wines to pair with Lemon-Ups, S'mores, Samoas and of course, Thin Mints. You can find all the delicious wines I pair up with these cookies at The Wine Spies, and if you don't have a Girl Scout nearby, you can get your fix by ordering online here.

Pairs With Sullivan Petit Verdot and Wine Trends For 2021
There's little doubt that COVID-19 has had an impact on the wine industry, but few understood how massive that impact was until the release of the Silicon Valley Bank 2021 State of The Wine Industry Report. This week, I talk with four thought leaders and influencers in the wine biz about what they feel will be the biggest trends for the industry in 2021, and how those trends may affect us for years to come. But it's not all pure wonk this week: I also uncork a most amazing Sullivan Family Vineyards 2015 Petit Verdot, Rutherford, Napa Valley, which you can pick up on Wine Spies for an ungodly $29 by using this link.

Pairs With Galardi Red Wine Campania and The New Hamster
I'VE GOT A SPONSOR! The Wine Spies, for some bizarrely unknown reason, decided to sponsor the podcast! So the day has finally come where I can bathe myself in free wine while a naked Anne Hathaway makes it rain with Ben Franklins (hey, it's my fantasy). To keep my new lifestyle going, you need to go to The Wine Spies, sign up, and get emails on all the amazing deals on superb wines they offer. You'll even get $10 off your first order if you use the link www.winespies.com/pairswithlife. If you want to learn more about the wine I'll be featuring each week, check out What I'm Drinking on the Pairs with Life website. And while I wait for Anne to arrive, the kids convinced me to let them get a new hamster, and I have thoughts on this. I won't ask Anne about it, because you don't want to do something like that to a fantasy.

The Pairs With Life New Years Special!
It's 2021! At last, the 24/7 dumpster fire that was 2020 has reached its inauspicious end, and a new beginning is upon us. so, is it time for New Years Resolutions, or should we just commit to breathe in and then breathe out and say that's the most we should shoot for at this point? In this episode, I'm joined by Kate Cunningham (@katethegreat), host of Wine Date With Kate The Great, to talk about the one resolution we want to keep for 2021, the "wine resolution" that will make us better drinkers...and the one resolution we know won't make it past the first week.

The Pairs With Life Christmas Special!
Happy Holidays! Let's celebrate the end of one of the worst years ever with Seasons Greetings and Yuletide Cheer! (Someday, I'm going to Google Yuletide and find out what the hell it means). On this year's Christmas Extravaganza, we feature food writer Karista Bennett, who tells us how to cook a delicious and memorable Christmas dinner for one or two. I also count down my Top 3 Least Favorite Christmas Carols, and talk about why the Smith-Devereux Gran Paradiso Brandy is the ultimate Christmas Spirit. It's almost as good as The Bing Crosby Christmas Special, only with less talent and I don't go home and beat my daughter with a 9-iron afterwards.

Pairs With A Winemaker's Side Hustle: An Interview With Terra Jane Albee of OwnRoot Collective
What does an artisan winemaker do when she's not making wine for some big name winery? She's creating her own labor-of-love wine. And how does she get that unique wine into your hands? Enter Terra Jane Albee, Napa marketing veteran and Founder of OwnRootCollective.com. On this week's episode, Terra Jane talks about founding this company during the worst possible time ever: after becoming a new mom and during a global pandemic, and how she has turned those disadvantages around to create a successful, direct-to-consumer wine subscription service featuring limited-edition bottlings from the hottest winemakers around.

Pairs With Sexual Harassment at The Court of Sommeliers
On October 29th, 2020, an article appeared in the New York Times reporting on widespread sexual harassment of Master Sommelier candidates and other women affiliated with the Court. Shocking to many, most women unfortunately saw this as just another day in the wine business - if not corporate American in general. On this week's episode, I have a conversation with Melanie Ofenloch, wine writer for the blog Dallas Wine Chick, about how widespread sexual harassment is in the wine industry and how it managed to reach the most upper echelons of our business.

Pairs With Geeking Out On New Jersey Wine With Kathleen Willcox
New Jersey wine? Yup, it's an actual thing, as my guest Kathleen Willcox attests to. A freelance wine writer for Wine Enthusiast, Wine Searcher and Spirited Biz, Kathleen has become quite the expert on wineries of the northeast U.S. and, having recently returned from a exploratory trip, now sings the praises of New Jersey wine. Being California born and bred (and a Certified Napa Valley Wine Snob), I was fascinated at the opportunity to sit down with Kathleen, taste through a few NJ wines (including what turned out to be an extraordinary 2016 Brut Reserve Sparkling Wine from William Heritage)and learn all about it. So, grab a glass from The Garden State and wonk out with us!

Pairs With Donnachiara "Empatia" and the Top Three Breakup Lines
Breakups. They suck. No matter which side of the hammer you're on, when it drops, it hurts. On this episode, I break into the Donnachiara Empatia white wine - a delicious 100% Fiano from Italy (duh) - and count down the Top Three Breakup Lines people use. Through the miracle of modern Technology, I also run these lines through Google's new Emotional Translator to find out the real meaning of these lines. So get yourself ready, because honey, we need to talk...

The Halloween Special: The Four Best Goth Songs and The Wines That Pair With Them
Dim the lights, don the leather and pour the wine! For our first Halloween show, I'm joined by special guest Ellen Clifford of the The Wine Situation - perhaps the world's only Goth Wine Podcast - to talk about the Top Four Goth songs and the wines that pairs with them. So, what will it be? The Cure with Apothic Red? All I can tell you is that there won't be any Rosés. Unless they're Blood Roses...

Pairs With Double Standards For Wine Influencers: The Men Tell All
Following an insightful and somewhat controversial discussion with six women wine influencers (I know, I know, they hate being called that) about double standards on social media, it's time to turn to the men and hear what they have to say. And this wasn't an easy task: of the 20 influencers I contacted in total, only 4 agreed to be on the podcast. But that they have to say is as broad in scope and perhaps as controversial as what the women had to say. Are there double standards? If so, who created them? And does the pressure to sexualize posts for Likes and Follows come from within or without?

Pairs With An Untriumphant Return To BevMo
A year and a half ago, Christine and I merrily ventured to our local BevMo for the annual wine-purchasing Bacchanalia that is the "Five Cent Sale." Last week, with similar excitement, I journeyed back to BevMo to reap my haul of amazing wine bargains...only to be as disappointed as a 10-year-old girl opening a dead puppy for Christmas. Why? What's gone wrong? Have I just become a cynical wine snob, or are there bigger issues at play here?

Pairs With Val d'Oca Prosecco & Double Standards for Wine Influencers
Are female wine influencers subject to a double standard? Is there a pressure on women to create suggestive and provocative social media content in order to generate more Likes, Follows and comments? Do we, as an audience of wine lovers and appreciators, willingly create an environment that rewards sexualized posts over informational posts? With no less than four bottles of Val d'Oca Prosecco in hand, I talk to six women in wine who've had tremendous success on Instagram about their personal experiences with online sexism: is the pressure real, is it internal or external, and does it affect how they create content?

Pairs With A Trip To Clarksburg, Part 2
In the second part of my trip to Clarksburg, Maria Ramirez (@Uncorked_Notes) and I explore the Julietta Winery, a gorgeous property on the edge of the Clarksburg AVA. Tastings in hand, we take stock of our trip as well as a little personal inventory. Unfortunately, my inventory consisted of a Blanket of Existential Dread, while Maria's contained a small Comfort Zone. What does it take to shed that blanket and to exit that zone? About ten wine tastings, or is it something more?
