OYS 088: Why Personality Isn’t Permanent & How To Redefine Your “Authenticity” w/ Dr. Benjamin Hardy
Our obsession to better understand ourselves and the people around us has led to the creation of a $2 Billion dollar industry built around personality testing. Some of the most famous personality tests include the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or the DISC Personality System. Here’s the truth though – they don’t have any interest in setting you free – they are just locking you in a mental prison with the gate wide open while making boatloads of loot. These tests and quizzes are designed to categorize us and help us understand why we are the way we are, but are they working? Does greater understanding really lead to an improved quality of life and producing ideal results? Money making industries rarely turn on a dime – that’s why it’s always helpful to hear from those who are making waves and challenging the status quo! What if there was a way to cut through all the complexity of personality tests and behavior types to get to the heart of what everyone is after – lasting change! I am SO sick and tired of seeing my friends spin their wheels while they are stuck in the mud! We’ve got to be bold – no half measures will do! If you are ready to do the work, I’ve got someone who will deliver the goods and help you kick things to the next level. So with this podcast episode, I can’t wait to introduce you to my new friend, Dr. Benjamin Hardy. Ben and his wife enjoy a bustling home with their five children. He is an organizational psychologist and bestselling author of “Willpower Doesn’t Work” and his latest release, “Personality Isn’t Permanent.” Ben’s work is viewed by millions of people monthly and is featured on Forbes, Fortune, CNBC, Cheddar, Big Think, and many others. Kaizenites, you can trust Ben – life has dealt him a series of challenging hands but each time, Ben rose to the occasion and found a way forward. In his years of study as an organizational psychologist, Ben has discovered that the best way to maintain true authenticity is by changing your perspective. Instead of thinking, “What do I want to do right now?” or “How do I feel right now?”, consider what the future you – the you, you want to become, would do. This exercise has the power to activate your imagination and engage your creativity in a way that can transform your outlook. Don’t let yourself stay stuck in the same patterns and aiming for the same missed goals – you need to change your outlook! Your goal shapes the process – start with your future self. I can already hear some of you chatting in my ear, Cary – I can’t break out of my patterns, I’m an Enneagram Type 3 or I’m an ISTJ! Don’t let old discoveries lock you into a future that hasn’t been written yet. Consider all the money and the huge industry that’s been built around helping you understand your personality type or deciphering exactly how you operate. Part of unblocking the path toward a brighter future is clearing away all the debris that has accumulated over the years. Did you know that decades and decades ago the government learned that by preventing naturally occurring small forest fires that they were actually stunting the growth of the forest? It’s true! For many types of trees, the heat of the fire actually releases the outer protective shell of the acorns so they can take root on the newly cleared forest floor. Are you going to continue down the path of stunted growth or are you ready to let the fire start burning so you can finally get stuff done!? Over the years, I’ve learned a helpful version of what Ben teaches. As I’ve mentioned before, I love to get up early and journal – it helps me organize my thoughts and really get my day started on the right foot. Too often, people overlook the power of writing and speaking your intentions, what you want and plan to do and who you intend to become. In a way, by writing down my thoughts, feelings, plans, and dreams, I’m cleaning that forest floor and making way for new life and new ideas to take root. I have bins full of old journals that in many ways make me cringe – but they’ve helped me on my journey to become who I am today! By writing it out and documenting my journey, I can see how Ben’s idea of the goal shaping the process really plays out. I want you to take full advantage of Ben’s powerful teachings. Make sure to go buy his new book, “Personality Isn’t Permanent” and check out the other resources on his website. I know that many of you will LOVE his TEDTalk as well! OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF OWN YOUR SELF Ben joins the podcast (Audio Player At Top Of Page) and talks about what led him to where he is today. Who needs to read & buy, “Personality Isn’t Permanent” Writing in a way that can’t be ignored. What keeps people stuck? Building a sense of purpose. What is in your blind spot, what are you missing? OYS 087: Married w/ Millions And Walking Away – Discover Inner-Strength w/ Heather Hennessy
I’m excited to connect you with my good friend Heather Hennessy. We go way back to the days when we were colleagues at FoxSports producing highlight reels. I would leave the company not too long after but Heather went on to becoming a media personality and sports reporter. I wasn’t surprised at all – Heather has the “it” factor – she was the number 1 track athlete in the nation coming out of high school, getting a full ride to USC with her eyes also set on the olympic stage. That’s until an ill-advised, split-second decision changed the course of her life forever. With the drastic change and new reality, Heather would enter into the world of sports entertainment, go onto author a children’s book, and marry her college sweetheart who later became one of the top relief pitchers in major league baseball. You can say she was on top of the world – interviewing star athletes, her husband landing an 8-figure salary himself with his dream team, the LA Dodgers. They got the mansion, the cars, the image – but something wasn’t sitting right, something felt like a lie. And while making a deep playoff run in 2016, Heather made the bold decision to walk away from the media, her marriage, and the millions of dollars – in order to find spiritual strength, which lied at the other side of her truth. Experiencing yet another life-threatening event this past year, Heather’s voice has only intensified as she’s been teaching others to trust their deepest intuition, to pursue inner-strength over physical, and to be authentic to who they are on the inside. Heather’s story is shared in the film, The Portal. Luckily, we have her right here, right now, to share her remarkable journey. Please take a listen, learn, and go dominate. -Cary More On Heather: Heather’s Instagram Heatehr’s Website Connect With Me: www.CaryHokama.com On Facebook On Instagram: @CaryDoes On LinkedIn On Youtube Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Purchase my book, “Own Your Self” on Amazon The post OYS 087: Married w/ Millions And Walking Away – Discover Inner-Strength w/ Heather Hennessy appeared first on Cary Hokama.

OYS 086: The $50 Million Dollar Ice Cream Brand w/ Andy Nguyen
Today’s guest is a college drop out who pursued entrepreneurship in real estate at the age of 18. At the time, Andy Nguyen didn’t even know what an entrepreneur was. A few years later, he pivoted into the fashion industry founding IMKING , a premium streetwear brand that garnered success, and it was during that time that frequenting eateries became a hobby of his. He said there were 2 reasons for that… To build a better bond with his sister, who loves food. Being able to try new restaurants for the purpose of creating yelp reviews and while building up his blog! Soon, travel and exploration for different cuisines became the norm – using his newfound platform as his R&D, leading to his development of unique concepts in his own mind. What started off as a simple desire to create a new dessert experience for his hometown, in just 5 years, emerged into a $50 M ice cream empire. Along with his now 29 afters ice cream locations, he’s opened 20 more eateries across the state including Portside Fish Co, Dough And Arrow, Ground House Burger, and Matte Black coffee, just to name a few. Andy and his partner figured out a way to dominate their space and build a brand that’s generated millions serving thousands of crazed customers & fans with lines out the door nearly every single day of the week – obviously not right now due to the pandemic, but Andy’s here to go deep on how they’ve shifted their paradigm to not only survive, but to pivot and laser in on how they can still serve their customers with the essentials needed, and thrive during uncertain times. I think you’ll enjoy this conversation in its entirety. Please enjoy. -Cary Connect With Andy Nguyen Andy’s Instagram Afters Ice Cream Instagram Andy’s Interview On David Meltzer’s Podcast Connect With Me: www.CaryHokama.com On Facebook On Instagram: @CaryDoes On LinkedIn On Youtube Email: email@example.com Purchase my book, “Own Your Self” on Amazon The post OYS 086: The $50 Million Dollar Ice Cream Brand w/ Andy Nguyen appeared first on Cary Hokama.

OYS 084: 100-Year Prison Sentence To Harvard Fellow & Lecturer w/ Andre Norman
*I do not own this photo In this episode, I interview Andre Norman – his story is nothing less than incredible. Known to many as “The Ambassador Of Hope,” Andre’s experience and expertise is what empowers him to help people turn their situation around. Andre travels around the world to serve as a mentor and listening ear for so many in need. He has made an impact working in the countries of Bahamas, Guatemala, Honduras, Liberia, Sweden, and Trinidad. Inclusion has been at the core of his solution-based efforts. From Prisoner to Professor From illiteracy to gang activity, Andre’s childhood prepared him for nothing less than a life of crime and violence. This behavior eventually led Andre to be sentenced to over 100 years in prison. As a natural-born leader, he quickly rose to the top of the prison gang system where he managed gang activities from within the confines of a maximum security prison. During his two year stay in solitary confinement, Andre had an “epiphany” and he made the decision to turn his life around. He had a simple dream to attend Harvard University and become successful. Over the next eight years, Andre worked twenty hours per day towards making this dream a reality. First, he taught himself how to read, then to understand the law and without hesitation, participated in anger management groups. After winning his appeal and having been armed with a GED and a dream, Andre walked out of prison in 1999, after serving fourteen years. Hear the rest of his journey and you’ll be inspired not to give up on your current adversities. If you want more, reach out and let’s get connected. This is an in-depth conversation, filled with so many deep takeaways. Please sit back, take notes, and apply into your life. Would love to hear from you. OYS 077: From Uber Driver to 5X Billboard Charting DJ & Producer with Greg Gatsby
In our society & culture today – the idea of instant success is HUGE! In fact, it’s a sickeningly booming online business right now isn’t it? From over-reported but under-explained success stories of athletes who rose from nothing to music sensations that make their rise to the top look easy. I wanna share a quote with you. “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” There’s another saying, “what got you here, won’t get you there.” – unknown. Recently, I had the privilege to sit down with my new friend, Greg Gatsby. Hailing from Boston, MA, Greg is a DJ, producer, and artist. He started his career as a DJ and music producer while cleaning carpets at college campuses to pay for studio time. Take it from me, Kaizenites – Greg is the REAL DEAL and he definitely didn’t start with a silver spoon in his mouth – he’s had to hustle, and hustle consistently, to get where he is today. Leveraging an opportunity to drive for Uber – just being himself – Greg talked his way into a gig playing at Harvard. The hustle didn’t stop there – Greg was determined to claw his way to the top so he followed up on that Harvard opportunity and secured a gig playing for Google! As you can tell, Greg earned every bit of respect and renown that he has in the music industry today – but his success didn’t come easy, nor did it stay easy! Photo Credit: Reps Label From Greg’s perspective and mine – success comes to those who put in the time and effort to master their craft and avoid shortcuts. Mastering your craft is like developing a slow-cooked meal that takes hours – sure, you could pop something in the microwave, but if you want those deep and rich flavors, it’s gonna take some time. You can’t microwave something that will knock people out of the park; the key ingredient is love & time! What are you gonna do with the time you have on this planet? Are you gonna waste it wishing that someone swoops in and hands you a pile of loot to make your dreams come true OR are you gonna go out there and take ownership of your success as well your failures? Greg and I have both found that embracing your primary role in your success is liberating! Don’t tie your self-worth and value to the opinions and actions of others – you can’t control that. Get your head on straight, put in the time, and master your craft. It might sound like a simple formula, but it works! Kaizenites, I’m inviting you on a journey that isn’t easy. I’m encouraging you to swear-off shortcuts and microwave meals for something that can stand the test of time. Trust me; you don’t want to get exposed as an imposter – I’ve seen it happen way too many times. Earn your fame, earn your success, and embrace your ability to write your own story! OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF OWN YOUR SELF Greg talks about a recent single he released. How Greg discovered his love for music and working as a DJ. Pushing creative boundaries or playing what the crowd wants to hear? Greg talks about the grind and what it takes to “Make it.” Don’t be afraid to hustle! Making the most of the time you have left. Practicing gratitude. Greg’s favorite place to DJ. Getting in the zone. Having recovered from the whirlwind of fame and stardom, William is back on the other side with some valuable lessons and insights to share with high capacity leaders like you! No one would ever accuse William of being afraid — this is the man who put it all on the line by going on national TV with the expectation of getting rejected. OYS 073: The 4 Words You Must Ask Yourself To Change Your Life Now…
The number one pain that I hear personally from people all the time – “I’m stuck and I don’t know what to do now?” And while it’s easy to regurgitate some of most ubiquitous phrases that we see on social media such as “start with why,” “grind harder,” as an example, I truly know how deafening those words can be. I’ve been there. Most people know I’ve found that in order for a result to truly stick, one must have a seismic shift in this one thing – PARADIGM. The definition of a paradigm (according to the Proctor Gallagher Institute) is a mental program that has almost exclusive control over your habitual behavior. In other words, your mindset and thoughts must be laser focused and operating on the same frequency as your goal. How do you do that? Click that play button and listen in! In this episode, I share the 4 words you must ask yourself right now in order to get clear, get unstuck from your habitual patterns, and unlock the unprecedented results that actually stick. Jason, an Ivy League graduate, walked away from his job on Wall St to pursue creating youtube videos back in 2010. Fast forward 9 years, Jubilee Media has recently crossed over 3M + subscribers and over 450M views. They are backed by media titans such as Steve Chen (Co-Founder of Youtube), Kevin Lin (Co-Founder of Twitch, and NBA veteran, Jeremy Lin, just to name a few. In our conversation, Jason shares his truth on what he kept reminding himself through his toughest of moments – “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself ad not on that others expected of me.” Since that breakthrough, Jason and his team at Jubilee are leading the way in the world of content for inspiring empathy. Together, Jubilee exists to create a movement of changemakers for human good. They create shareable human-centric videos that bridge people together, challenge conventional thinking, and inspire love. Ultimately, they aim to inspire people to LIVE DEEPER.
